The o line will be fixed when guys settle in one spot. What the hell is up with this multiple position crap on the oline. If OB is so hell bent on what if a guy gets hurt then Watson should he getting like 50% of the work at qb1 because their is a chance he might get hurt. OB is the stupid. I mean seriously. OB line theory is as legit the endgame time travel theory. If OB oline system so cutting edge why no one else doing it. There would never be an all pro lineman if OB had his way. Because he cant play evey position
OB has a theory, it's how to make a black whole a white hole
Cal McNair thinks OB is a genius.

The stupid is equating the QB position with an OL. The ultimate objective with cross training in camp...doesn’t happen in games...is to aim at consistency when injuries occur. It also helps with communication which makes the sum of the parts > the whole when the unit is working efficiently. These guys have been doing it throughout their football years. It’s no big deal. Their positions get settled in camp.
Except in the past they haven't.
Brian Gaine & his scouts are always looking for talent. College & pros. They're always watching who's doing what, making a list of guys they'd like to add to the team if the opportunity ever presented itself.
I hope Cal is doing the same at the coaching & personnel level.
Except in the past they haven't.
Brian Gaine should be quietly evaluating potential Head Coaches, too, so if ever / whenever Cal is thinking about pulling the plug on the OB experiment, Gaine will have some educated input.
I hope Brian Gaine is also keeping his eye on the availability of position coaches, just in case OB wants to talk about changing a guy out (maybe Mike Devlin, for instance, who I've speculated is on double secret probation...remember Animal House?...this season) or adding a guy to the coaching staff.

I would want a completely new regime. Gaine is O'Briens guy
That's projecting that Gaine is in OB's back pocket and incapable of bringing good, independent thought and action to the GM.
I think that's quite a reach. IMO, they work well together because they have similar visions for the team, not because OB is the puppet master and Gaine is the puppet.
My impression of Gaine is that he's a sharp, clear headed guy, more than capable of doing a very good GM job with or without OB.
IF OB is let go in a season or two and Gaine is doing a good job by most standards, it would make a lot of football & management sense to let Gaine play a key role in hiring the next coach. That would allow for some continuity and put the hiring order in the right sequence.
All of this is far off speculation, of course. But it's fun to think about.
I think Gaine is O'Briens puppet. I see no other way to explain going into the season at LT with 2 injured guys who have never been good and 2 rookie projects.
I don't know if gaine would be good independently, but I don't think he's an elite GM. Texans need to find the absolute best available, not someone who is merely adequate.
OB is running things.
All this over Dillard and some over priced & likely to under perform free agent Tackles?
How long does it take to know how good a new, first time GM is going to be? Two years? More? Or the first time he doesn't do what you want, he's outa here?
Unless he does something a lot more terrible than ignoring free advice on this MB, I think Gaine will have at least two more years to provide Cal some real performance based evidence. And I think that's fair.
Also, who's to say Cal would pick someone who would turn out in 3-4 years to be better than Gaine?

First of all, none of us have any idea whether Gaine did EVERYTHING the way OB might have done it if he was the GM. I don't think for a minute that OB is "sending Gaine memos" that say Do this or Do that.
I think they sit down and talk things through until they see eye to eye on a course of action. That's something that apparently wasn't easy for OB and RSmith, for whatever reason.
It only stands to reason that a good GM will try to bring in players that fit the Head Coach's vision. Isn't that how it works in other successful franchises?
Would it have made folks happy if Gaine did things just to prove he's not OB's puppet? That would be totally dysfunctional and would be enough reason in and of itself to replace Gaine.
If OB retires, moves on, or gets fired and Gaine stays, should Gaine then settle on a new Head Coach he can't support just to prove that neither guy is the other guy's puppet?
I’m not sure the GM getting along with the HC is a bad thing. I just want O’Brien to be better at being a HC.
Don’t see anybody saying it’s a good thing, either. Being called the puppet of another person isn’t exactly a ringing endorsement, especially if the puppeteer is the hated BoB, aka “Butt Chin”.Don't think anyone said that's a bad thing.

So you think BOB wants to have the 2nd most cap space in the NFL and not really participate in Fa? Doubtful, this directive comes from Call/Olson. Nothing has really changed with the old man's death.

I think he wants to go into the season with two broken LTs who were never good and two rookie project LTs. I also think he wanted to draft 3 TEs in 2 years (two of whom can't block) and sign another one to play "outside left tackle." I also think he's ok with using Lamar Miller like a power back
As far as the cap, they are required to spend 92% of it over a set of years.
They are going to hit that cap Mark by giving a bunch of 1 yr contracts to marginal fa's
I don't think any HC would want to have the lousy LT situation that the Texans have had the last 2 yrs.
However it's stated, the implication is that Gaine is OB's puppet because he hasn't done what some folks here think he should have or because they've stated how well the two of them work together. I just find that to be a non-sequitur.
Taking the premise to the logical extreme, I asked if it would take something like openly disagreeing with OB for Gaine to prove he's not a puppet.
It's good they are aligned. But I also think O'Brien hired him to have input but ultimately defer to him. That's not necessarily bad...if your head coach can evaluate talent.
Remember the interview process for GM was a joke. Gaine was preselected.
Not because they get along, but because gaine will defer to him and OBrien is ultimately deciding. It would be ideal if the GM got along with the head coach but was not a yes Man. If they had healthy disagreements that would be good, but I think gaine is probably just doing what OBrien wants.
And yes the moves on the offensive side strike me as classic O'Brien head scratching moves

Given that it's the Texans, and lack of Houston sports reporters, how would we (the fans) ever know if this happened or not?
Maybe they do, but I think obrien has the power to make the final decision.
It seems to me that the approach to the defense and offense are pretty different. Crennel doesn't seem to go for quite as many washed up guys or expects projects to start
But the Texans were ranked 31st in pass blocking by PFF.Don't let facts get in the way of subjective opinions
But the Texans were ranked 31st in pass blocking by PFF.
Some said he did just that with Roby, Calhoun and Gipson
I thought the chart said 23rd

Easy because it would leak out just like it did with Smith and Obrien.
After 4 years?
I think it was year 2 after the hot mess again with Bill O'Brien benching another one of his hand picked QBs.
But the Texans were ranked 31st in pass blocking by PFF.
20th in pass and 32nd in run

The rankings terminology is somewhat confusing!

Ranking all 32 NFL offensive lines by pass-blocking efficiency
BY MARK CHICHESTER • APR 8, 2019
31. HOUSTON TEXANS
2018 pass-blocking efficiency: 80.4
Competent offensive line play is difficult to find in the NFL, and no team exemplifies that more than the Houston Texans, who have now surrendered 200-plus quarterback pressures in three consecutive seasons. It may not have been as bad as last year (where they allowed 253 pressures), but they still allowed 31 sacks, 32 hits and 150 hurries from their 623 passing plays.
I think it was year 2 after the hot mess again with Bill O'Brien benching another one of his hand picked QBs.
31 sacks? Where did the other 31 come from?
After 4 years?
It started in year 1.

CBS Sports' Jason La Canfora ran a report that the Texans might consider relieving Smith of his duties on Sunday. According to the report, the Texans would move Smith up the hierarchy and hire a new general manager that head coach Bill O'Brien would have some say in.

JB here you go. Year 1
Didn’t Kubiak hand pick Smith? How did that work out with that clueless GQ guy?
Who cares what the oline was ranked last year. We saw what we saw.
