INFO on college 2018 football

ILB I'm looking at Sutton Smith but he will prob move beyond where I want to select him. He is a six foot DE terror who is extremely strong but to short for OLB imo.

I was a bit vague with my post, I meant more for the ILB position. I'm not very impressed with either McKinney or Cunningham, and we seem to be running more 4-3 schemes. IMO we have a hole at the Mike linebacker position and really need that stud in the middle to be the leader of the defense as much or more than at rusher or corner. If I have a say, and chips fall correctly, I spend our first 3 picks on two offensive linemen and the best inside linebacker we can land. For all we can do on defense right now, it would double with healthy Demeco or Cushing - top 5 by having that guy in the middle. A true leader in the middle.

If we could trade Clowney for an early pick, I'm in. Not a slight on Clowney, but our base pass rush is two defensive tackles playing wide 9 with little result. The only time Clowney gets home is over the center/guard. Mercilus, Ejiofor and replacement pick can fill the pass rush role. A legit Mike linebacker can sustain the run defense, as well as anchor everyone else. Defense wins by controlling the middle of the field, and we currently don't. We're surviving by having excellence everywhere else.

So, IMO our first defensive pick needs to be at trying to acquire THE defensive leader at middle linebacker.

My error as not clear enough on my poston Sutton Smith; he would be inside linebacker in our defense. He is a holy terror getting into backfield and very strong. he repeatedly goes against much bigger and stronger opponents and goes through or speeds around/past them. He is also consistent.

Another guy I'd move from his college spot or at least where sites list him as OLB is Kansas Joe Dineen Jr. Very active tackler who plays all over and just gets the job done. Playing for low ranked Kansas is keeping him under radar but IMO he is real deal and I'd play him at ILB. He is 6'2 ish and like Smith is only good for a couple PBUs a season. I would also consider Dineen at safety/LB mutant role to handle TEs and RBs

I don't see ILB as a significant need but see your point. Cole is still significant...if he can stay healthy.

Unsure if this has happened before but every player on both teams received unsportsmanlike conduct penalty in game between Ole Miss and Miss State Thursday. Final play of third quarter had players arguing on sidelines as Q ended. Safety Abram threw a punch at Rebels receiver A.J.Brown who replied in kind. Bulldogs corners Jamal Peters and CB Dantzler plus LB Willie Gay were kicked from game; if suspended, could effect them being in any bowl game. Rebels CJ Moore was dismissed as reported by Joseph Zucker at Bleacher Report. TBH I had turned from game as Q was ending and missed entire incident. SHeesh!

Kansas Jay Dineen same size as Joe discussed above and about same size as FROSH just got crunched as he tired to block A U TX player on second half kick off. He did go to sidelines with help.

My guy WR LilJordan Humphries is being focused on by Kansas and has only one catch for five in first half.

This team right now, I would rather have Urlacher than Deion Sanders or Clowney. We can compensate outside because we've it in abundance, and are doing a hell of a job of it already. We're broken in the middle though, and like I praise Matthieu for strengthening multiple positions, similarly we're being pulled down by lesser talent at the linebacker spot. We need not just a player at ILB, we need the defensive captain ... a role we haven't had in quite a while, currently being filled by a 1yr free agent safety.

I think defense could be the best pick in RD1 b/c I think the most highly rated OT's are going to be off the board early and trading that far up would prove to be far too costly to this draft.

I feel the best move would be to trade back in RD1 and pick up either an extra RD2, RD3 or RD4.

With that stated, I also think ILB could be a big need as well. CB is also at the top of my list. I've mentioned a couple of CB's of interest in other threads as well as this one....haven't mentioned ILB's but do have 2 in mind:

1. Tre Lamar / Clemson / 6-3 @ 243 lbs / Could be a Day 1 three down starter. Has all the requisite skills for an ILB.

2. Germaine Pratt / NC State / 6-2 @ 241 lbs / Same skills as mentioned above but possesses above average ILB speed.

If the Texans could get their hands on an ILB who actually possessed decent coverage skills, it could help make the SS even more effective.

My concern with trade back from our first is who would be avail that we do not want but another team would? Maybe the Eagles if we wanted to give up a #26 is for their two seconds?

Not sure why Ed Oliver sitting out second half on sidelines as Memphis now beating up on Houston Cougars 52-31 with minutes left. No report of injury.

Yeah, that was strange but like the Texans....the Cougars depth is questionable. It's a shame their whole defense was predicated on Oliver.

Finally getting opportunity to watch LT Yodney Cajuste West Virginia play entire game vs Oklahoma and am impressed. He handles his opponent consistently and even if beat by DE running wide to get around #55 recovers and keep his guy from impacting QB Will Grier.

2017 stats: 12 games, 12 starts, 828 snaps, eight penalties (one declined), one sack allowed, no quarterback hits allowed, 12 quarterback hurries allowed

PFF signature stats: Out of 97 offensive tackles who played at least 50 percent of his team's stats and are eligible for the 2019 draft, PFF's grade for Cajuste ranked No. 22. He was ranked No. 10 in pass protection and No. 32 in run blocking. He committed the seventh-most penalties.

RED FLAGS – None

Yodney Cajuste projects favorably as a starting left tackle in a gap/power heavy running offense. Cajuste has some restrictions in his pass protection, working in a scheme that offers a lot of short sets and slide protections would be ideal for his physical skill set. Cajuste has the needed length and mobility to be an effective starter elsewhere, however. Teams needing an upgrade could feasibly start Cajuste as a rookie in 2019 but NFL speed will test him initially.
Very lengthy detailed breakdown here:https://thedraftnetwork.com/2018/11/19/2019-nfl-draft-player-profile-yodny-cajuste/

First long look at RS Sophomore left guard Josh Sills who was very impressive in first half. 6'6" 320 monster who moves well all directions. If he comes out I would go after him in later rounds. Wished I had watched him more.

Oregon junior QB Justin Herbert (shoulder) will be reevaluated in Eugene.

Herbert injured his shoulder taking a sack late in the second quarter of Friday's Civil War showdown with Oregon State. He would not return to the contest. Ducks HC Mario Cristobal had no immediate update on his status following the blowout win. Look for an update on his outlook in the coming days. With Oregon out of contention for the Pac-12 North berth in the conference title game, Herbert will have a month or so to get right before the team's to-be-determined bowl game. It's always possible that he could opt out of the bowl to prep for the NFL Draft -- should he declare -- but one step at a time.

West Virginia redshirt junior T Yodny Cajuste left Friday's game against Oklahoma due to a leg injury sustained in the third quarter.

Cajuste (6'5/321) sustained an injury to his right leg while getting rolled up in the pile near the goal line in the closing minutes of the third quarter. He was eventually able to limp off the field, albeit with assistance. Consider the future NFL lineman questionable to return to action. We will pass along updates as information becomes available.

UCF QB McKenzie Milton suffered a horrific knee injury. (VIDEO.....do not view, if squeemish) From the film, it appears that he has suffered a dislocation of his knee..........but worse yet, it appears that is was accompanied by a severe twisting following the dislocation. This is type of injury that you would expect 3-4 collateral ligaments to be ruptured............I would be shocked if this injury has not torn his popliteal artery (the artery that supplies the entire lower leg) and his peroneal nerve that controls foot movement. This is the type of injury which I have had to perform amputation because circulation could not be reinstituted. There are no details/updates given by the team or hospital following what no doubt required emergency surgery. Prayers for the young man.

Did anyone else watch the MAC game between Buffalo and Northern Illinois? What a game! 19 point comeback to win by N. Ill and three players I love one being mocked constantly all season for OT whom I would draft with our 4th pick to back up Lamm is Max Scharping who is simply good. He just doesn't allow opponent near QB rushing or passing play finally giving up first sack since 2015.

DE Sutton Smith who I am not mocking currently as we need corner in 5th round but this dude amazes. Game "talkers" kept saying how strong he is and how he cannot be stopped. Frequently doubled and triple teamed. In this type football I expect overwhelming play and stats and both these guys deliver.

DE Corocoran playing opposite Smith is very good and I would play at OLB if we got him.

List of college players skipping bowl games reaches 10
December 7, 2018, 3:37 PM EST

We’re now into the double digits of college football players who have decided not to play their bowl games, instead preparing for the NFL draft.

Minnesota offensive tackle Donnell Greene is the latest to make the announcement that he’s not playing in his team’s bowl game. Greene said he has already hired an agent, so that ends his NCAA eligibility.

Other players who have decided not to play in their bowl games are North Carolina State wide receiver Kelvin Harmon, Arizona State wide receiver N’Keal Harry, South Carolina wide receiver Deebo Samuel, Houston defensive lineman Ed Oliver, Michigan defensive lineman Rashan Gary, LSU cornerback Greedy Williams, Iowa tight end Noah Fant, North Carolina State linebacker Germaine Pratt and Oklahoma State running back Justice Hill.

As recently as a couple years ago, when Christian McCaffrey and Leonard Fournette sat out their bowl games, college players skipping bowls was considered unusual, and often came with heavy criticism. But this year it has come to be expected that NFL draft prospects aren’t going to risk an injury that could cost them millions of dollars just so they can play for free in the Weed Wacker Bowl.

Perhaps that’s because some very good college players, including Jaylon Smith and Jake Butt, have suffered serious injuries in bowl games that adversely affected their draft prospects. Perhaps it’s because college coaches treat bowl games as unimportant, often quitting on their teams before their bowls to go take a more lucrative job. Or perhaps we’re all just coming to accept the reality that football is a business, and players — even “amateur” players — are entitled to make business decisions.

Notre Dame corner Julian Love whom I have round 2b out with hammy but smiling on bike. Clemson LT Mitch Hyatt not looking good first half.

I said the same thing about Hyatt in the OL thread.

The warts are showing against top tier talent. I think all he needs is a NFL S&C guy to get ahold of him.

isn't strength keeping him from blocking speed defender. Not saying it's his feet but isn't this problem you have with Davenport?

Just reported Love out with head injury. Didn't see that but after tackle he touch his left hamstring close to buttock.

Glad Love returns field 3rd Q. Rules out any significant injury and he is banging without hesitation.

Didn't get a chance to watch the game but I guess his next best test is going to come against Alabama. Side note, I wonder when other teams in CFB are going to get tired of the Alabama - Clemson show?

He has to be doing something right I just cannot determine if and how long it would take to correct Hyatt's issue(s). If we had a 4th and he fell I would consider him but not now unless my guys are gone.

I've got him in the 3rd, because he's a 4 yr starter and if he needs to get on the roids for a yr I'm OK with that.

Hey Pulley, leaves those girls alone.
Arkansas junior CB Ryan Pulley has announced that he will be foregoing his final year of college eligibility and entering the upcoming draft. The 5-11, 195-pound Pulley had a breakout year in 2016 when he had 13 pass breakups as a sophomore, but didn’t play the following year because of a pectoral injury suffered in the season opener that year. This past season he was back in the starting lineup where had 3 picks and 7 total pass breakups, but was suspended for the season finale after he and another teammate were reportedly seen chatting up their opponent’s cheerleaders during pre-game warm-ups the previous week

Also from Great Blue North
A couple more junior wide receivers announced late this afternoon that they would be entering the 2019 draft including Miles Boykin of Notre Dame and Central Florida’s Dredrick Snelson. Boykin is a big (6-3, 230) receiver who is just starting to scratch the surface after catching 54 passes for just over 800 yards this past season. Boykin figures to get some early third day interest. Meanwhile, the 6-0, 210-point Snelson averaged 16 yards per catch on 43 receptions this fall, his second year as a full-time starter; he figures to be more of late rounder or free agent candidate.
and of possible interest to Houston and a player I've not ranked:
Cheevers, meanwhile, isn’t all that big (5-10, 180) or necessarily fast, but he was one of the most opportunistic cover corners in the country this past fall when he picked off 7 passes. Like Jackson, Cheevers looks like he should start to get serious consideration no later than the early part of the third day this coming April.
Boston college 2018: junior with 39 tackles, 7 PBUs, 7 INT 1-TD, 1 FF, 1 QB hurry

Hyatt just added another trophy to his legacy at Clemson. The Senior Tigers finished up 55-4 and 2 National Championships. They stomped the dogshite out of Alabama and they've been blessed with great QB play. During this stretch Hyatt has been the backside protector for these guys and he's obviously done his job at keeping these QB's healthy.

I think he's going to be a fine LT even if he has to spend a season gaining strength in his lower body, what counts is his smarts at manning the position. I watched the game last night and he kept Lawrence in good shape and when Clemson needed those tough ground yards, they had no problem taking their runs to the left.

I'll be completely satisfied if analysts want to poo-poo this guy, for whatever reasons, and scare NFL GM's into letting him drop into RD3....hopefully Gaine will score again with another solid pick.

I'd still take him over Davenport, but that isn't saying much lol

Now that the season is over, hopefully I can find some time to actually do some scouting myself. Hyatt looked fine in pass pro last night, but did look weak in the run game

In a bit of good news for Texans who need corners; Alabama junior Saivion Smith 6' 1 200 declares for NFL draft. a junior college transfer he originated at LSU. He started first three then lost starter role that game; returning game seven when Diggs hurt for season. Smith started last 14 but in championship went down with alleged leg injury. Some Alabama fans tweeted he "gave up" as he was beat on that play. I've researched but nothing to support that.
60 tackles, 3 INTs and 5 passes defended, no forty time yet.

Other than that being another CB in the pool, why is that good news for Texans?

He's projected to lower first round which should drive other players down some....I hope. Biggest is one you identified offering another possibility at a need priority for top four selections.

Players I want moving up in ranking..argh. Murphy and trayvon Mullen. At least CB is deep. Clifton Duck great cover skills reminds me of Love but he seems to play taller if that makes sense? Rank 6-7th rnd

Jalen Ferguson, WR Preston Williams and DL Simmons still not allowed participate in drills will now be allowed to interview and get medicals.

A compilation of quotes from Daniel Jeremiah's press call yesterday
renderTimingPixel.png

"OU's Marquise Brown and Ole Miss' D.K. Metcalf are the only two who definitely look like 1st rounders."

"Browns at No. 17: Miss. State DL Jeffery Simmons would be a nice fit if he falls that far."

"on Iowa TE T.J. Hockenson: Safest player in the draft. ... High floor, high ceiling.

"I love (Iowa TE) T.J. Hockenson. I think he's the safest player in the draft." Says he evaluated Hockenson the day after Gronk dominated the Chargers as a blocker in divisional round and saw the same mentality from Hockenson"

"on FAU RB Devin Singletary: Can make defenders miss in a tight area. "He can be in a hallway and you can't get a finger on him."

"on Alabama S Deionte Thompson: Play vs. Clemson put some question in scouts' minds. Thinks he would've benefitted from another year in college."

"Some teams think Houston DL Ed Oliver might have what it takes to play a stand-up role outside like a Melvin Ingram."

"this is one of the better tight end drafts we've had in a while."

"Duke QB Daniel Jones "would make a lot of sense" for the Patriots at No. 32."

["Daniel Jones, if he falls that far to No. 32, would make a lot of sense for them. He's very bright. He's going to be able to swallow the information you're going to have to swallow...has touch and accuracy, does not have a huge arm."] (https://twitter.com/KevinRDuffy/status/1100110054387269633)

"Jeremiah added that Jones is a "real smooth rhythm quarterback, which is something (the Patriots) value in a big way."

"Outside of the first round, Ryan Finley from N.C. State, who is almost a little bit of a poor man's Jared Goff. Same build, kind of skinny frame, but great anticipatory thrower, very accurate and tough. That would be another name that would make sense (for the Pats)."

"believes LSU LB Devin White would be "a big-time difference-maker" for the Broncos, given his ability to cover and how Vic Fangio could use him in blitzes."

"on LSU CB Greedy Williams... Clubs are all over the map on him. Some have him as the top CB, others have him buried. Liability vs. the run."

"Baylor WR Jalen Hurd should be considered a "jumbo athlete," says Daniel Jeremiah. He calls him one of the most intriguing players in draft. He's a big slot guy who can run like a tailback."

["NFL Network analyst Daniel Jeremiah on Iowa State's Hakeem Butler: "His catch radius is ridiculous." Calls him "plodding" as a runner, but says the combine is a big opportunity to change that narrative."] (https://twitter.com/dylanmontz/status/1100102763860631559)

["Jeremiah also calls David Montgomery one of his favorite players in the draft."] (https://twitter.com/dylanmontz/status/1100102900666241024)

["Daniel Jeremiah of the NFL Network is on a pre-Combine conference call. He has Kyler Murray ahead of Dwayne Haskins, calling Murray's running ability the "X-factor" in his reasoning.] (https://twitter.com/brdispatch/status/1100099005521031169)"

"NFL Network draft analyst Daniel Jeremiah on a league conference call today. He says big-picture, there's "premier talent" on the defensive line, both at DT and DE. Says it's actually a really good OL group from mid R1-R4."

"NFL Network's Daniel Jeremiah says TCU's LJ Collier could be a target of Oakland late in the first round."

"Jeremiah also asked about Clelin Ferrell: He never stops. Pure effort. I think he can be a really good 10-12 sack guy who is going to hold up in the run and not have to come off the field."

["Asked if the Lions skip on TE in the first round, who the team could target in Day 2, Jeremiah raves about San Diego State's Kahale Warring."] (https://twitter.com/Justin_Rogers/status/1100104275793981440)

"Daniel Jeremiah says Montez Sweat is a top 20 pick and the conversation starts with Detroit at No. 8."]

"on Alabama OL Jonah Williams: Could be functional starter at OT but could be really special at OG. ... Had some struggles vs Clemson ... some NFL clubs think he projects well at center."
