Duane Brown traded to Seahawks

As it sits right now we will have about $53M to spend next year with all key contributors accounted for except Joseph. Clowney is in that number at $13.5M already and if he is signed to longer deal it will not likely add much more than that number in 2018. If we cut Cushing the number gets even higher. So yes, we have a lot to spend next year. Can probably target two high price guys and a couple role players.
I want to invest in some better special teams players after we get some big FA fish. Chris Thompson was supposed to be a step in the right direction but aside from that one good return a week or so ago he looks like crap along with the rest of our special teams. Fairbairn and Lechler cant be our only bright spots

well minus watson protection for a gain in our horrific secondary

we played without brown so hopefully we can continue on with thw norm

Not me. I would rather have a player cheat to be a better teammate on the field than one who holds out for more money to the detriment of his team. Especially its evident the team needs you desperately. At least Cushing was on the field trying to help his team instead of looking out for himself on his couch.

yeah cushing is all ok in my book he did drugs cus that was the only way to be there for his team...givin his major injuries that was the only way imo

brown held out for money

night and day imo

I just want to go on a little winning streak so we can be in the playoff race when Brian Cushing returns. Then who knows, we'll make a little noise in the final few games and get hot going into the playoffs. Right now our defense is a hot mess and not playoff caliber but things can change with a little bit of luck and health. Maybe the Jaguars will suffer a couple of key injuries for all we know. Their defense is crazy good and dominating. Man, we should have had that type of defense.

CB Jeremy Lane failed his physical. Texans trade Brown and a 5th in 2018 and a third round pick from seattle in 2018 and a second in 2019

Lane failed physical.. Texans now get a third in 2018 but now give a 5th to Seattle in 2018.

This should have been no surprise to anyone........From my Injury Report for last game.:

CB JEREMY LANE (GROIN).............SUFFERED THE INJURY OCT 1............HAS NOT PLAYED SINCE.............HE SUSTAINED A GROIN TEAR IN THE SEAHAWKS' 2014 PRESEASON FINALE AND RE-INJURED HIS GROIN IN THE SEASON OPENER, AFTER WHICH HE WAS PLACED ON IR/DESIGNATED TO RETURN..................HE RETURNED THAT YEAR BUT AFTER BEING ACTIVATED AND PLAYING FOR A COUPLE OF WEEKS, HAD A SETBACK KEEPING HIM FROM PLAYING IN ANOTHER 2 GAMES THAT SEASON.............HE TORE HIS ACL AND A COMPOUND FRACTURE OF HIS ARM ON AN INTERCEPTION IN THE 1ST QUARTER OF THE 2015 SEASON SUPER BOWL, AND UNDERWENT SURGERY FOR BOTH.................HE DID NOT RETURN TO PLAY UNTIL WEEK 12 OF THAT YEAR

Lane fails physical, Texans get an extra 2018 3rd give up their 5th

So....

Was like, there ever any conversation between RS and Seattle's Front Office, that was like....Hey, do you want a 2nd and Lane or a 2nd and third in 2018 prior to this? Cause like, I waaay like this deal more. It makes me FEEL like we got DW for free now, as DB was working/forcing his way out of town.
I like this deal a lot more, but it doesn’t make up for giving up a 1st rounder for DW. With that being said, there’s no doubt they did the right thing in both trades!

I see where you're coming from, but if DW continues and improves his current play; he'll become the franchise QB that every team looks for. I would more than willing to give up 2 1st rounders for a bonafide franchise QB.

That extra 3rd round pick next year will be handy. There are always fairly decent o-lineman available in the 3rd round.

great deal, lots of value for a older and previously devastatingly injured LT. He did not want to be here and you need a good locker room more than a LT. Clark will have to do until the offseason. DW4 made it work before DB came back

Addition by subtraction, the Texans way. Butt hurt feelings and politics aside, for the 2017 season this move weakens the team.

2018 season as well, unless you think Ricky can draft an All-Pro LT in rounds 3 through 7

They're going to have to trade that 2019 2nd to move up in the 2018 2nd just to find a starter. A guy we'll have to rush into the starting role.

The defense, imo, had been doing aiight considering. Still pretty good against the run.

I'm worried, a bit, about Goff & Ben, but other than that our pass defense numbers should get better.

2nd and 3rd sound so much better
A 2nd rounder in 2019 is equivalent to a 3rd rounder in 2018. Doesn't make it that exciting.

I'm also curious as to how the trade was able to be made after Lane failed the physical.............AFTER the trade deadline??

Dude think about what was traded for RG3, Goff, and Wentz
Texans stole Watson
Throw in the niners trading for Jimmy when they could have drafted Watson

Thank the football gods Jacksonville took that rb and not Watson

I’m good with this. We’re building for the future with Watson. Brown has been a good Texan but he’s not fixing all that ails us.

Damn dude WTH did Duane do to you? How is he a cheater? I can understand being angry or upset but I wouldn't call him cancerous. Guy is playing what is probably one of the most demanding and taxing positions-both mentally and physically and wants to get paid and has a short shelf life before his time is up in the NFL.

Moving on I'm not happy about this...we need a solid LT and Duane proves he is one and given our GM and FOs track record in the draft I wouldn't be surprised if they wasted the draft picks we got on some scrubs who end up being hot garbage. Also Lane isn't even an upgrade for our DBs and is merely another warm body to throw out their.

I didn't say Duane Brown is a cheater. And I told you what he did to me. And his supposed bretheren. He's a cancer. And a grievance monger. And he's gone.

And I'm happy Jeremy Lane isn't coming.

must have been an approved conditional trade....

I like this much better. Basically two 3s for Duane Brown & a 5th, that's practically a 2nd.

We got basically 2 3rd's and $6 mil cap space for DB, which is still a steal for us. Unless we have to carry Lane on the roster for the rest of the year

So we get a 2018 3d and a 2019 2nd and give up DB and a 2018 5th? Wouldn’t Seattle have a problem with salary cap? Or do we also have to pay for Lanes contract?

So which picks do we have next draft?

That was a 2018 RD5 and CB, Lane (former RD5) and a 2019 RD2. As far as I've heard, that was pretty much it. RS has cap space to work with but the OT FA Class looks pretty bad and as usual, they'll be way over valued.

Personally, I wouldn't move any picks from 2019 for the 2018 draft. Cannot have another season of robbing Peter to pay Paul. The team has an extra RD5 and possibly 3 COMP Picks (Guessing RD3, RD5 and RD6) to work with...potentially it could look like this:

RD3- 2
RD4- 1
RD5- 3
RD6- 2
RD7- 1

Unfortunately, these aren't usually RS's golden rounds but maybe the 2018 NFL Draft will be his saving grace since he has no way of off-setting a bad draft with picks in RD1 or RD2. RS needs to focus on finding some potential starting gems or quality developmental talent at OT, OG, DE, OLB, SS, FS, TE, QB, CB, and P so he can reload the teams depth.

Nah Lane failed his physical that’s why we get another 3d this year and have to give up a 5th this year. So we are looking at potentially 3 3d round picks this draft. Wouldn’t be surprised at all if we trade up and snag an OT in the second round.

Ok, I missed the updated news regarding the trade. Thanks for the heads up LikeMike.

Revised, it could look like this:

RD3- 2+1
RD4- 1
RD5- 1+1
RD6- 1+1
RD7- 1

I'm going to go back and check but I think there were 2 projected RD1 OT's who went down with season (not career) ending injuries. I might be inclined to use 1 pick on a guy like this if he were to fall into RD3 but a second healthy OT with upside in RD3 isn't going to be so easy. Safe to say that this pick will take some scouting and luck.

You can write off one of those potential COMP pics right off the bat.............Quinton Demps was placed on IR after fracturing his arm in preseason.

That extra 3rd will likely give us three 3rd round picks after comp picks are announced plus two 2nd rounders the next year. More than enough ammo to move up into the 2nd round and grab an OL.

But how much more cap space is freed up with Browns departure ? In the search for viable Olinemen RS might be as active in the 2018 offseason as any year since the one he acquired Jonathon Joseph.

I wasn't aware that theBears IR'd Demps but according to the new rule, Demps would be eligible for activation after 8 weeks which means he could return by Week 11. If the Bears activate him how would that affect the COMP Pick status?

Aboushi could trend up in getting the Texans a possible 3rd or 4th COMP Pick since he was signed to a 1 year-996K contract by the Seahawks and is now their starting RG. He may finish the season as a starter barring an injury. He was signed away as an UFA, was ranked near the back but became the starting RG for the Seahawks. If the Seahawks were to choose to give him a new contract so he wouldn't enter the FA market again next season....is there any additional impact to the possibility of the Texans receiving a COMP pick? If so, could it be elevated due to his starting status?

Good one. You almost had me.

Laugh it up but he actually has been when you take into account everything. he's by far the best tackler of everyone in the secondary, when Vrabes sends a cb blitz he's usually sending K-jax b/c he's a damn good blitzer from the position. He's versatile.. He can cover in the slot and he can cover on the outside & he's played a little bit of safety as well...J-jo can't/doesn't do that & K-jo has struggled with covering in the slot. K-jax is our most versatile cb..and like i said, he's valuable in this scheme & has played pretty good all things considered.

See the new COMP thread I just posted.............Demps loss of playing will factor in significantly if he returns.

Joseph is obviously our best CB and teams are almost afraid to approach him unless the safety makes a mistake. I don't think Kareem will ever get his fair shake because more than any other Texan: he's left on an Island. EDIT: HE'S LEFT ON MULTIPLE ISLANDS. Asked to play outside and inside, over the tightend, slot and safety, and his thanks is 'I told you so' for a PI call where he never actually touched Vladi Divac last weekend. Joseph has his spot on the right (and like Sherman is owning it) - Kareem is asked to basically play every other position. We are getting abused by everyone not named Joseph, Kareem or Hal ... and still Kareem's rookie season (he fell down, he can't turn) won't die. Ufckin stupid. Sit Kareem at CB2 over the years and his franchise tag laughs at Bouye. Put him at safety and Hal is someone else's backup. No, Kareem has been a strong #2 that asked to (and beat) Calvin Johnson 1v1, destroyed Welker at the slot, has zoned safety as one of the most secure tackling DB's I've seen. Kareem is a monster, don't blame him for not being allowed to master a single position.

Good post, you make good points.

Still. I've been one of Kareem Jackson's few supporters. This year, he's let me down.

You have been a supporter. This year I don't think I've ever seen a cornerback asked to do more, and I feel he's executed his job as well as could be expected. I'm fairly certain that you have access to All-22 video. I'm just a random guy watching my team, but I would love to see the job description of someone with a heavier burden at CB3
