Demeco Ryans’ Staff

What are everyone’s thoughts on these guys? I have to do a little research on them because I admit I don’t know them well.
Not going to say that he is the best that the Texans could've hired, but my first thought is that the Texans could have done quite worse on the hire. I reserve the right to change my opinion on Slowik because I don't know a whole lot about him, but in DeMeco I trust. The folks at the Wheelhouse seem to like him as well.

Interested to see how Slowik pans out. Though the timing of the news is odd. I thought the wait was to get to speak with one of the Eagles assistants.

Slowik could be the next Mcvay or he could be a misfire. He comes from an excellent coaching tree and with Strausser on staff at OL it appears he’ll have some experience around him. Hopefully they can add some more good experienced assistants to help him out.

If I followed the rumors correctly, then this MIGHT be the why

Dang he was my number 1 choice for us going into this cycle. That could end up being a really good hire for them
But not as good as our HC hire is it, and surely there was no realistic hope to think he'd make a lateral move to here from Philly while passing up a Head coaching opportunity ?

Complete and total speculation: Shane Steichen and his agents could have used the ploy we will go to your division rival as asst. head coach as some leverage on the Colts.

Don't get me wrong love the Ryans hire. But I do still harbor concerns about a defensive oriented head coach in this day and age. That's the only reason I might have preferred Steichen

I think we're getting Steichen after SB and he will be in charge of the offense.

And is that so because you think a defensive HC would be more inclined to favor a conservative offensive philosophy which would likely accentuate the rushing aspect at the expense of throwing the ball ?

Finally an offensive hire with some, not much, experience.1 year as an OC with Vikings, but I question why only 1 year before getting fired?

How many coaches are retained when the HC is fired? Vikings finished 2021 14th in points scored and 12th in yards. A solid outing for a 1st time OC. I’d be more concerned with the Denver experience but I think that had more to do with Hackett/Wilson being epic disasters than Kubiak’s coaching.

You must mean one year specifically coaching QBs? He was quality control coach at Indy the two seasons prior to being assistant QBs coach. Seems like QB coach is the natural promotion from assistant QB coach… not to mention he set records as a QB at A&M. He’s an ascending young coach.
I didn't count the quality control years because I have no idea what quality control is. I guess it counts for something. He at least could listen and watch what the real coaches are coaching.

Remember all the negativity over Josh McCown's inexperience. This new Texans offensive coaching staff is not that much better.

As much as I like Young, I'm almost persuaded to now go for a defensive draft, trading down from #2 and #12 for draft capital.

I hope I'm wrong, but I'm not going to have much expectation this next season, offensively at least.

Quality control is a do it all position most teams nowadays classify rather than specific positions. The title is just semantics whether its “quality control” or “offensive/defensive assistant” or “assistant position coach”.

Check out Mike Mcdaniel’s coaching history. I’m sure nobody was worried about his abilities when hired as HC when he had “only one year” as an OC experience along with a slew of assistant positions that weren’t position coach specific.

Johnson has 3 years of NFL coaching experience. I wouldn’t get too wrapped up in the title. He has earned the opportunity and promotion in Houston.

We just hired an OC lol
Cardinal sin of not turning on system for review or researching thread before posting. I saw we had hired Klint and Jerrod Johnson and assumed we were still waiting for Steichen (my guy). I had expected Slowik as Ryans on same team.

I say this with all generosity.

The negativity was about Josh McCown as HC. Some were ok with McCown as OC with an offensive minded HC. Most were ok with McCown as QB coach.

You're complaining about quality control guys being promoted to position coaches. That's the normal progression.

Quality control is entry level. They're often promoted to position coach. Then coordinator. Then HC.

I hope the deal doesn’t fall through. I’m sure that Klint sees that him coming in as the run game coordinator can potentially lead him to QB Coach, OC, or Asst HC here until he’s ready to be the man. I’m anxiously awaiting the O-line Coach announcement.
He's probably hoping for Indy OC

Not even close to being the same thing. These coaches have at least been through the grind of what it takes to be a coach, and have done so for multiple seasons. McCown had none of that, not one single freaking season with that experience and was going to be the HEAD coach. Not a position coach, the top dog.
