Davis Mills getting no respect

Why would we spend on a QB at the top of the draft and spend in FA to bring in a vet if they are just a placeholder? None of the names being mentioned, outside of Jimmy G who has been to a Super Bowl but will cost a ridiculous amount of money, are going to be able to mentor the 1:2 pick. And he definitely would not come here knowing he's a short term option, potentially not even for a full year. Just use the FA money to build up all the other talent holes on this team and run Mills out there until the rook is ready, if they aren't already established as QB1 by the first game.
Find a vet FA that doesn't cost much at all who's also in a position to teach rather than to play.

Case Keenum could be playing for veteran minimum or slightly higher.

He agreed to take just 3.5M last year to have a chance at a ring with the Bills.

They (the Bills) might resign him for a one-yr deal.

I also doubt that he would come back here since DR already left for greener pasture when Keenum first arrived into Houston, and none of the player/staff is coming with DR.

But Keenum can be a good tutor to both Mills and the rookie QB in how to be a pro and how to handle adversities.

He had played all of the offenses in the NFL, from the EP, to the WCO, to the Air Raid, and everything in between.

He had proffessed that he likes to be in coaching once his NFL career is done.

If I was DR, I would at least kick the tire.

You want people with integrity, passion, and a fighting mentality as an underdog (which the Texans need right now).

You'd be paying him not much at all for the service he could bring to the team.

I wish we had one of those teams with an identity. A solid foundation to drop a rookie QB into.

Instead, we’ve fired 3 HCs in 3 years.

I know, let’s draft a QB to fix that problem.
We don't even know when this team is going to have an identity.

But let's assume that DR is a guy who can build a defense.
(Meaning he doesn't need all the first round picks to do that).

In a different way that Kubiak approached it.
Kubiak did build an efficient offense while letting the defense had the higher draft picks and free agent signings overall, and especially in the first few years.

There are many ways to skin a cat.
And DR might convince the ownership, the GM, and the team, that we'll build a defense first.

With a great defense, a QB like Mills may do with the help of a running game.

I'm not totally against this approach either.

It could build a winning team.

But what happens in the playoffs nowadays is a different story.

If Jalen Hurst didn't play out of his mind, the last SB would have been a no-contest.

The previous one required some heroism from Burrow.

IMO, it's what the NFL and Vegas want.
Entertainment.

The Bills did make the playoffs before they drafted Allen.
Do you even look at the Bills' roster (the offensive line and the skill positions) to see what happened from year to year?
Or (obviously) you just looked at the fact that the Bills made the playoffs the previous year and ASSumed that they have an identity?

You call a first year HC with Tyrod Taylor "an identity"?
The identity was being set

Playing sound hard nosed football on both sides of the ball. Then they got their QB. A model I hope the Texans follow, but I doubt Cal will go this direction. Gotta put butts in the seats.

I didn't need to look at the roster.

Identity starts from the top down

Maybe you dont understand the meaning of the word identity or setting the tone for an org.

The Bills did not have any identity when they drafted Josh Allen.

Neither did the Bengals when they drafted Burrow.
I see. You're happy with 1st loser. I'm wanting to build a championship team. Last few years they've been solid teams with a "just add QB" build model.

But your way is good too, at least the Texans will get past the Divisional round.

Sound and hard nose?

McDermott's first year as the HC had his offense ranked 22nd in points scored and 29th in yards allowed.

In his second year, the offense ranked 30th in both points and yards.

You call that an identity?

Of the guys on the offensive line in Josh Allen's first year, just one returned the following year.

That goes against what you've been trying to claim for the longest time; ie., to build the line first before getting the QB.

If you had followed your mantra, as the GM of the Bills; you wouldn't have drafted neither Josh Allen nor Joe Burrow.

Let me ask you this.

Looking at this offensive line and the offensive skill positions, do you really think that you, as a GM, can build enough of identity so that you can draft a QB next year?

And let's assume you can build some sort of an identity, where will the team end up?

Do you win 6-7 games?

You will be out of the top ten as far as the draft slot goes; you won't have the chance to draft the championship QB that you clamor.

Tunsil is going eat a good chunk of cap space.

You don't know how long AJ McCann is going to last, and at what price?

If Howard progresses enough, he's going to command a good chunk of cap space with his second contract.
And if he doesn't pan out, you're back at square one at RT.

Nobody knows how the Center and the LG position will pan out either.

And if you listen hard enough, you may have heard the "claim" that the Texans had the worse WR/TE corp.

Are you sure that Pierce can last 17 games, plus the playoffs?
So you need another guy there also.

Not to mention the defensive side of the ball.

You want to build a championship team?
Tell me how you plan on doing it?

Now if you want to talk about QBs that had won a SB in the last twenty years; I'm game.

Forget Brady; not too many people on this board knew about him back then on draft day.
Personally, I was completely out of the loop.
I vaguely knew about Rivers and Eli; I didn't think it makes much different which guy you draft.
I'm pretty sure you liked Rivers (you had said so a few times).
I'm sure you'd say if Rivers were on those Giants' teams; he would have won the SB team to.
And there were the obvious like Peyton and Luck.
And the ones I didn't know about, like Big Ben or Rodgers; I didn't even watch a single game in their college career.
(I was out of the loop, like I had said).

But the guys that I had watched and said that I would draft include guys that were not high on the totem pole.

Brees; I didn't watch hardly in college, but I watched him in SD, and I thought he's a guy I would want.

Flacco, Russell Wilson, Stafford, Mahomes were all the guys I said I would draft.

This was why I had said that I would put my record in drafting QBs against anybody.

As a GM and/or a HC, most often you're not going to have the chance to draft the QB that you really like.

You can only hope to find a guy that you can build a team around to win the big one.

Gottta start from somewhere right? It’s very difficult to build a championship caliber team overnight. If Ryans and staff could get this team in the playoffs. That would be a great start.

This isn't happening this year, unless Ryans brings in Carr/Jimmy G etc... and nails the draft/fa. Plus the team stays really healthy, because the depth on this team will really be lacking.
Meh, I dunno steel - we weren't far off winning this division last year and with a new coaching regime plus some nice additions this off season, I can see us getting this done.

So, TB you think the Texans are making the playoffs with a rookie QB?

We weren't far off??? What is in the smoke these days? Only 6 wins away with the 2nd worst record in football, baby!! So close man, if only. I was also just 6 numbers from winning the Powerball too, so I'm feeling a lot better about my chances now.

Been there, done that.

If they see a guy they believe is a franchise QB they should draft him. I've said that many times.

We’ve all been there done that.

I’ve said I’m down for whoever they draft. I will post my usual welcome to Houston videos. I will be excited verses being upset about them not drafting who I thought they should’ve drafted. I leave that for the usual suspects.

We will all be excited

We will also give them the benefit of the doubt for a couple of seasons, unlike what Mills got around these parts.

If Young is the pick and he gets hurt, how do you think things will be around here?

That’s football. If you draft a quarterback next year and he gets hurt. Then what?

And if they draft Stroud, some of you will be on here complaining.

Please add me to the list of people who will be upset if the Texans becomes the first team in history to draft a sub 6' less than 200lb QB with a top 5 pick.

"NFL teams can earn a spot in the playoffs in one of two ways. First, a team can win its division."
We won 3 out of 6 and tied another. Jaguars won the division with 4 wins in the division.
Just basic math.

'4 wins in the division' is not how Jacksonville won it..

Jacksonville 9-8
Tennessee 7-10
Indianapolis 4-12
Houston 3-13-1

Basic math.

Overall, lots of negativity. Me, personally, I'd be OK. I think Mills will improve on last years performance; I haven't given up on him just yet and would like to see what he can do under a new system and coaching.

That is true. The Buccaneers made the playoffs this year with a losing record (8-9). All 3 wildcards from the NFC had a better record than them.

3 years later & our prime pick was used on a "Mr irrelevant" or UDFA value.

Alone, no. Means nothing. But it's part of a pattern of cavalier spending.

Tell me more about this cavalier spending?

What did the cap look like when Caserio took over and what does it look like now?

You don't win your division by having the best record of games played against teams within the division. You win your division by having the best record OF teams within your division.

Last year, the Lions were 5-1 in their division and the Vikings were 4-2, but the Vikings won the division because they had the better overall record (13-4 to 9-8).

So you want to bring in Keenum to be a mentor, an unofficial coach in the QB room? Because you didn't mention anything above about his actual ability to still play, which is the entire point of bringing in a vet to bridge to the rookie. And outside of two games in 2021 when he filled in for an injured Baker Mayfield, he has almost no playing time in the last three years and just turned 35.

I know everyone here loves him because he was a Coog and had the "Tree Stand Game" for the Texans, but I can't believe it is 2023 and we are still talkikng about him being the answer in any way, shape or form for this team.
