College Football Random Thought Of The Day

She should cheer for the Coogs.

Tickets through UH website were sold out, thus the designated UH section is full. My daughter went through Texas State's site and bought tickets so we might be the only folks in our section wearing red and white and surrounded by folks wearing maroon and gold.

Huge weekend coming up, with 6 of the top 10 squaring off ...

7 Stanford at 10 Washington - Friday 8pm
8 Wisconsin at 4 Michigan - Saturday 2.30pm
3 Louisville at 5 Clemson - Saturday 7pm

while ...

6 Houston has a bye against UConn
2 Ohio St has a bye against Rutgers
9 A&M has a bye against South Carolina
1 Alabama has a bye against Kentucky

I kid, I kid.

Watch one of them lose now just because I posted that.

I love to see Alabama lose to Kentucky. The smugness of their idiotic fans has pushed me over the edge.

An interesting change has been made to the pre-draft process for underclassmen interested in leaving school early to pursue an NFL career.

In conjunction with the American Football Coaches Association (AFCA), the NFL announced Monday that FBS schools, beginning in February 2017, can “designate a maximum of five underclassmen who may apply for special eligibility for the 2018 draft to be permitted additional scouting.”

good find Wolf. I think this might keep more players in school another year if they can get feedback on where they might be drafted.

I don't think you can ever discount a Jim Harbaugh QB. Therefore keeping an eye on Wilton Speight is probably a good idea, a red shirt Soph.

He made a mistake today in the end zone, but definitely a prospect to watch.

And what a thrilling finish to the Volunteers - Bull Dogs game.

Heard this question on Russillo and Kannell today and liked it, then thought there may be some different answers here ... so ...

with the potential for some big time programs looking for head coaches after this season, and taking everything into account (conference/schedule, recruiting, alums/boosters, fanbase, expectations, facilities, prestige), rank the jobs ...

(in alphabetical order here)

LSU
Notre Dame (most didn't agree Kelly would be gone, but ND is hard to pass up for convo sake, so)
Oregon
USC
Texas

my order ...
Texas
LSU
USC
Notre Dame
Oregon
... anyone else, thoughts?

The argument for LSU though is that they have NFL caliber players up and down their roster from a region dripping with talent that is essentially quarantined to that school. Give them any kind of QB/offense and they are running with Bama year in and year out for the SEC/NC.

Exactly the opposite argument to be made for ND, actually.

Texas has earned a reputation for being a bunch of nickle and dime cheapskates with a admin who likes to micromanage which in my opinion puts them at the bottom of the list. I also think a high profile coach would opt for the SEC over Texas and the Big 12. Oregon is willing to spend the money and has Nike. USC's problem is they've have concentrated on finding a USC Guy. Notre Dame has the brand the budget to go with it and can recruit nationally.

I feel like Texas would spend the money if they had a coach to back it up. Strong just doesn't have that "it" factor and I didn't believe he had it at Louisville either. Les Miles would be a huge get for Texas in my opinion. Notre Dame and their brand is national and though LSU has all the recruits they could ever want or need in Louisiana I would still take the national brand of Notre Dame. I went USC over LSU because I feel USC really was/should be QB U and if you could establish that brand again and create a NFL training ground for the most important position in football then I would take that then battling Bama/Saban's shadow every year.
Oregon has Nike but I still feel people take them less serious as a football program because of that affiliation and it has created a stigma where they like uniforms and spending money on facilities which get great recruits, but not the eat/sleep/breathe football types of the other 4.

Feel like Oregon is always gonna run hot and cold recruiting, balancing being on the sequestered edge of nowhere versus all their resources and facilities.

Agree on USC's USC problem, and I think their problems run even deeper than that.

And ND can recruit nationally, though not at all in the numbers they used to recruit nationally. At large national tv deals gutted their advantage.

How does Mack Brown still have a commentating job? I have to watch on mute. Is there no one else they can find? He is ridiculously awful.

Will Tom Herman leave the Houston Cougars to become the next head coach for Texas or LSU? He would have unlimited resources in recruiting and likely become one of the highest-paid coaches in the game. You can't blame him for wanting to take over an elite football program that is rich in tradition with deep pockets like Texas and LSU have.

I never wanted to believe that he would leave, but after the loss at Navy today you have to wonder if he's frustrated with the fact that our best doesn't seem to be good enough? If we're always a one-loss team we'll never sniff the Final Four playoffs or win a National Championship. Herman strikes me as a guy who wants to win multiple National Championships on the biggest stage. U of H is a good stepping ground for head coaches who tend to leave for bigger and better things.

I remember I used to love Kevin Sumlin from 2008-2011!

Hopefully Tom Herman will stay and we can build this thing the right way over the next few years. Ed Oliver is only going to become a real force. A pure freshman this year. Our recruiting is pretty good but we can land more 5-star prospects I feel.

He's gone. If Houston made the playoffs I could maybe see him staying, but after this 2nd season with a loss to a rando team, he's gone

Don't really care if A&M loses to Bama because that's to be expected, but if we fight tough and give em hell, I'll be very optimistic about A&M's chances of going 10-2 or 11-1

BTW, htownfan, I wasn't making fun. My team (UH) isn't exactly impressive at the moment. I've almost written off the Louisville game.

*************

Does anyone know when Houston would have joined the dying Big 12?? I think Houston might have dodged a bullet seeing how the Big 12 has signed its own death warrant, but I wonder what this will do to their morale the rest of the season, especially Ed Oliver's commitment to the school.

Alabama, Michigan, Clemson, and Washington look set if they can all finish strong. But what a big if at this point.

Bama still with LSU, Auburn and then the SEC title game.
Michigan still with Ohio St. and then the Big 10 title game.
Clemson still with Florida St. and then the ACC title game.
Washington still with Utah and then the Pac 12 title game.

WVU and Baylor still to square off should they each run the table to finish the Big 12.

Meanwhile Nebraska, Louisville, and Ohio St. still fighting for an avenue (back) into this thing, with Boise St on a mountainside somewhere saying hey what about us.

And any of the current big four could pull an OSU and lay an egg against an unconsidered. Or Bama just juggernauts the rest of the way and none of this matters.

If WVU wins out, they should get strong consideration from the playoff committee. Baylor on the other hand should be put back in their place for the trash OOC schedule they always have.

I have no idea how UH loses to SMU of all schools. Herman looked outcoached by Morris all night long... I really hope he hasn't thrown in the towel already in search of a new job, because his athletes deserve better.

Agreed for the most part. I just don't see WVU getting the nod over an undefeated Washington, and even a one-loss champion from those other conferences still looks awfully strong in comparison.

WVU is getting a bit of a raw deal IMO. Their schedule isn't amazing but at least they tried with Missouri and BYU. Both teams have disappointed but that's not WVU's fault. Baylor doesn't even try. They've basically told the committee they're going to play no one and they dare them to try and punish them for it.

That seems to be Baylor's standard response for everything, including recruiting criminals and rapists

Jake Browning breaks Huskies’ single-season record with 34 touchdown passes

Washington sophomore quarterback Jake Browning threw six touchdown passes against California late Saturday night to break Keith Price‘s single-season school record.

If Os doesn't work out next season and they dont trade for Jimmy G the 2018 draft class of Rosen (Sad to see he got hurt, the system stinks) and Browning is where I would do what ever it takes to get a top flight QB.

Love me some Browning, he took a beating last yr and came out playing better than ever. Sarkisian did a great job of rebuilding that program. Hate that his personal issues didn't allow him to see the fruits of his labor. I hope he gets another shot.

SB Peterson has been Washington head coach since 2014. This is his 3rd year and pretty much his team. Peterson's says he feels good about this year's team because they finally loaded with OKGs (Our Kinda of Guys). Some thought the cupboard was a little bare when Chris arrived. Sarkisian was barely above .500 while at Washington. Browning is a Peterson recruit.

I knew Browning was a Peterson recruit, I didn't realize Peterson had been there for 3 yrs. Time flies.

Sarkisian left Washington on his own volition to take the USC job. His personal issues caused his firing at USC but really had nothing to do with Washington. Pretty much all UW's best players are sophomores or juniors that were recruited by Petersen.

FIU TE Jonnu Smith out for season after pregnant girlfriend douses him with boiling water

By: Luke Easterling | 11 hours ago

Florida International’s best prospect in the 2017 NFL draft class could be facing career-ending injuries after a crazy situation involving his pregnant girlfriend.

Jonnu Smith is out for the rest of the 2016 season and could face long-term injuries after Mary Gaspar poured boiling water on him. Smith suffered burns to his head, neck, shoulder, back and one of his arms, per David J. Neal of the Miami Herald:

The two argued through the day over the attention Smith was paying her and their relationship. While in Smith’s dorm room and “feeling extremely emotional and stressed,” she told police, she boiled a pot of water. Then, she walked over to Smith and poured it on him.

When Smith didn’t react strongly enough for her, she started hitting him with her open hands, she told police.

Gaspar, who is five months pregnant with Smith’s child, was charged with aggravated battery.

Smith has been a highly productive pass-catcher for FIU, talling 1,936 yards and 17 touchdowns on 175 career receptions. He had been one of the few bright spots for a 3-7 team that has been eliminated from bowl contention.

What a bloody mess of things now, huh ...

Alabama looking thoroughly in, of course.

Mich/OSU winner looks in ... if they also get past a likely Wisconsin B10 title game.

Clemson still with the inside track to likely face VaTech for the ACC title.

Pac12 is the wild west now with Wash/WashSt/Colorado/USC all fighting for a title in the coming weeks.

And don't think anyone out of the Big12 supplants a 1-loss Louisville to get a spot.

Should make for some good debate down the stretch.

I can't help but think what if our own Houston Cougars had taken care of business against Navy and SMU? We'd be undefeated and likely situated nicely with a top four National playoff ranking. With a huge home game with heavily ranked Louisville on the way this Thursday Night on ESPN. But we can't play that "what could have been" game I guess.

Rivalry weekend full of games with at least some fleeting connection to the CFP/National Championship ...

Really sad, seems like this stuff happens far too often in New Orleans. 1st Will Smith and now this.

RIP and thoughts and prayers go out to the McKnight family.
