All encompassing 2022 draft thoughts thread

So what why was Cunningham and Whitney cut? What about Keke and Miller? Didn't they all have honorable contracts?
Performance reasons.

Just like any job, if you are unable to perform your duties on any job at an acceptable level you will be let go.

CB Alontae Taylor
“Tennessee’s Alontae Taylor comes off a strong showing at the Combine and has built momentum for himself moving towards the draft. In Indianapolis, he timed 4.36 seconds in the 40 with a quick 10-yard split of 1.50 seconds. This after measuring 6’0 1/8″ and 199 pounds.

Depending on the team you speak with, Taylor is being graded as either a cornerback or safety. Right now, he’s getting grades that range from late Round 3 to the early fourth. Taylor, who also participated in the Senior Bowl, has had official top-30 visits with the Cincinnati Bengals, Las Vegas Raiders, Houston Texans, and Tennessee Titans.”

Yesterday I stated my opinion that Neal at #3 and McDuffie at #13 was a good one two selection.

Today, on further reflection, and going against the norm, I'm now thinking taking Gardner at #3 and taking Green at #13 is the better Texans value.

Now, yes, this is taking Green a little higher than he is projected to go, but this is solely because of positional ranking.

Green is considered a can't miss Blue Chip, pro bowl talent. There are several teams selecting in the 20's in need of a guard and Green is projected to be selected in that range. So the Texans would be overdrafting by maybe 5 or 7 positions. But is it overdrafting? Green has a draft grade of 90. Neal's grade is 93.

Listening to the presser, it certainly appears that the Texans consider CB and the OL as priorities and I would narrow that down by saying IOL.

Gardner at #3 and Green at #13 certainly addresses these two primary needs, with two blue chip talents.

And if we could trade down from #13 four or five spots, all the better.

Height: 6-4
Weight: 219 pounds
40 time: 4.5 seconds (estimated – did not run at the combine)

Due to his ankle injury, London attended the NFL Combine but only for interviews and did not perform or get measured. He intends to have his own Pro Day on April 5, separate from the official USC Pro Day held on March 23. He is still working towards full recovery from his ankle injury but is expected to be completely ready for the 2022 NFL season.
April 5 ?

All of these visits, and no mention of Evan Neal?

Which means with the 3rd pick of the 2022 NFL Draft, the Houston Texans select...

Evan Neal, Offensive Tackle, Alabama.

Just posting the information that I came across. I really don’t get it when people don’t like certain players. Dooming the player a failure way before he actually plays a down in the NFL.

I don't think anybody is dooming London to failure. They just like other WR's more and certainly not at 13. Then there's the history of past PAC 12 receivers.

There aren't really any clean WR prospects in this draft. Injuries, size, speed are the various concerns. Still, teams need WRs. And my over/under for WRs in the 1st round is 5-1/2.

True

A couple of 3rd/5th rd guys I like are Velus Jones and Kyle Phillips. You only draft Phillips if you're keeping Cooks outside.

The Pope kid from Miss St looks pretty good too.

Yes he is, go back and read the exchange between him Texansphan. I’ve noticed that with you and several other members. When you gents doesn’t like certain players, you have nothing positive to say about said player. Just like any Clemson player for you.

I think it's fair to say this guy reminds me of Jarrett or USC Mike Williams.

I really don't care about talent when it comes to Clemson players. They're more trouble than they're worth. IMHO

I'm not being critical of them, I just don't want them on a team I root for.

When teams bring players in for private visits usually its because they want specific things answered. Ex: Stingley’s medicals, Thibodeaux’s interview, someone like Trayvon Walker maybe specific position drills to see if he is a fit.

Neal is the cleanest prospect in the draft and they probably interacted with him at some other event like Alabama’s pro day anyway.

The Cowboys picks #24 & #56 (plus a 2013 mid rounder) should get to #13. If the Texans guy is not @ #13, and Jerry's guy is, we may have a Texas trade.
I know you meant 2023, but I certainly hope you mean mid 1st rounder.
That would be close to correct value - if it is a mid first rounder and not a low one.

I saw April 5 and being a man who follows a calender, today is the 13th. As I looked into it, he has a hammy going on. It wasn't anything to downgrade him, I was wondering where the results were at

I've stated why I didn't think he was a 1st or even 2nd rd pick, but I'm not the one pulling the strings. Maybe some oc will get creative and make him a move slot guy vs an x? Imo, when you're drafting in the 1st or 2nd rd wr, you're drafting an X wr. If there is a guy who you don't know of he can get off a jam or doesn't have something special, then take him in the 3rd. That's all

Now I can dig this.

I get the feeling people are going to overthink things and Linderbaum will slip. A team like the Patriots will gladly pick him up so he can be a multi time all pro for them.

I’m glad he was able to workout before the draft.
But I saw in an article earlier today that sources said “no team” has a 1st round grade on him.
My guess is that it’s a smoke screen. I can’t see Cincinnati passing on him at the end of the 1st. If him and Burrow were paired together, that would be a duo for over a decade.

Even Texans could hit a home run with him - center is the forgotten position in this forum and we could do with a long term upgrade there.
At 302 pounds, he has put on a little more weight and looks more attractive now.
His pass and run pro have been described as elite too.
He would have to be a consideration at 13.

This draft we need not even think about a player that has questions of injury prone, size, speed, arm length, desire, character, when there are ones that have + check points on all. There are too many options for 1st round players to reach based on potential.

Wanna solve the ol issues

Draft Neal at 3 and Green at 13.

If this truly was my primary concern, I’d solve this problem for the long term by drafting:

003. LG- Ikeem Ekwonu (South Carolina)
013. OC- Tyler Linderbaum (Iowa)
080. RG- Jamaree Salyer (Georgia)

Tunsil and Howard would bookend this new and improved IOL.

037. RB- Breece Hall (Iowa State)
068. WR- Tyquan Thornton (Baylor)
107. TE- Jelani Woods (Virginia)

I guess Lovie would be pissed and Pep would be smiling like a possum eating shite out of a wire brush.

Lovie could have what’s left of this draft and an absolute field day with the 2023 NFL Draft.

Pep would have 2022 to get his new and improved offense up to speed, so the Texans could determine if Mills is the QB going forward.

On a side note, Thornton could be an interesting addition based on his 6’-2” height at 180 pounds and ability to do the 40 in 4.28 seconds. His elite speed would certainly put defenses on notice.

Jelani Woods could be a threat right away b/c of his ability to high point the ball while easily bodying out coverage with his size and athleticism.

The offense could be really, really good….and sooner than expected.

Heh, I know the best defense is a good offense and all, but we gotta be able to get our D off the field first!
Just to play along, what if we went with a heavy D draft?
It could look like this:-
#3 Kayvon Thibodeaux Edge
#13 Andrew Booth CB.
#37 Jaquan Brisker S.
#68 Max Mitchell OG/T
#80 Travis Jones DL
#107 Kyren Williams RB
#108 Jalen Wydermyer TE
#183 D'Marco Jackson LB
#205 Tyquan Thornton WR
#207 Wesley Smith OL (9.63 RAS score)
I sprinkled a few O in there for Pep. ;)

I could actually get on board with this other than the Icky pick.

It's just that this is such a good yr to draft defense. Really talented guys and there's a lot of depth too

Meyers was 300 lbs and was good

Weren't we doing zone blocking at the time.

What I don't like with the small OC is pass blocking when he can't anchor against the bull rush and gets pushed back into the qb's face, collapsing the pocket from the middle.
Agreed

But I think Linderbaum is the exception to the rule.

With this said, give me Green over Linderbaum

I heard Peter King say he has heard from a few GM's that the sweet spot in this draft was 3rd and 4th rounds. The Texans currently have 4 picks in those rounds - #68, #80, #107 and #108. My favorite players that I expect or hope to be there between 68 and 108:

WR Metchie, Tolbert, Pierce, Shakir, Wan'Dale Robinson, Austin III, Ezukanma, Bell
RB Allgeier, Cook, Dameon Pierce, Williams, Ford, Harris

And a whole lot more on both sides of the ball. Who are your favorites in that range (#68-#108)?

center is the forgotten position in this forum
I don’t know that Center is a forgotten position, but I think we’ve accepted we don’t know what the Texans are looking for.

they chose not to retain Ben Jones who is currently playing on a team that’s been among the rushing leaders since he’s been there.

They drafted Martin then paid him as if he’d been to multiple pro bowls.

now, they Signed Britt to a prove it deal, then resigned him as if he proved it. Then there’s Jimmy Morissey who I’ve heard rumor they are very high on

so at least for my part, I don’t think the Texans are thinking about Center at least this year

Who are your favorites in that range (#68-#108)?
Jamaree Salyer, OT/G, Georgia
Zach Tom, T/C, Wake Forest
Brian Robinson, RB, Alabama
Khalil Shakir, WR, Boise State
Jeremy Ruckert, TE, Ohio State
Cade Otton, TE, Washington
Kerby Joseph, S, Illinois
Damarri Mathis, CB, Pittsburgh
Marcus Jones, CB, Houston

Behind Stingley and Gardner, who are your next three cb's.

I have Trent McDuffie next, then Kyle Gordon and then Kaiir Elam.
1. Gardner
2. Stingley (still unsure about the foot)
3. Booth
4. Elam
5. Dax Hill (move from FS to CB)

All with 1st round grades. I like the Washington CBs, just not in the Texans system.

I wouldn't take any other CB until the 3rd. There's a huge dropoff.

Listening to some sports radio and they were saying most GM’s are more open about trading down than up this year. So if Texans want to go that route they may be competing against others which can lower compensation values. May be hard to find partners.

Maybe you wouldn't draft a corner until the third round but some figure the chances are good that the Texans take Sauce @ 3 overall because according to some Lovie reportedly is pounding the table hard for the Cinci CB.

I took it to mean if we don't take one in the 1st, because of the drop off he mentioned, he wouldn't take one until the 3rd
