All encompassing 2022 draft thoughts thread

I could actually get on board with this other than the Icky pick.

It's just that this is such a good yr to draft defense. Really talented guys and there's a lot of depth too
Because of being slightly undersized doesn't Linderbaum project as a ZB Olineman in the NFL ?

Weren't we doing zone blocking at the time.

What I don't like with the small OC is pass blocking when he can't anchor against the bull rush and gets pushed back into the qb's face, collapsing the pocket from the middle.
BIG doesn't spell MAN. Stepnowski was on those Cowboys teams and he was sub 270lbs. I really doesn't matter how big you are once you hit that 300lb range. Its about technique, leverage, then strength. If it was all about size inside, Sapp,Randall, and Donald wouldn't be hall of famers. If you as a center know how to use your hands, legs, and anchor, guys can try to bull rush you and be unsuccessful all day. Power blocking doesn't mean lets just get big guys, its more so combo blocks, lead and iso runs. If you have guys who can't move their feet, then they can't peel off a combo block and get up to the lb. I've watched Linderbaum after steelbtexan posted about him 50m times and I think he's going to be a top notch center in this league. Having that wrestling background tells me alot about his leverage and technique also. He will be a guy sitting from 20 to early 30.

Were Hakeem's parents doctors?

No, they owned a small cement business in Lagos that kept the family fed. Then one day the third child Akeem was playing basketball on a dirt court and after his first swat and fade away, up from nowhere came a bucket full of money…..green that is. Next thing you know, Hakeem was loaded onto a plane and arrived in Houston……you guys know the rest of the song…….

Actually he went to New York at first like Eddie Murphy, decided it was too cold and came to the souf ,lol

After I looked into it, something about Thibodeaux, it gives me some concern. For a long time, he wore just a plain arm band near his left elbow. He then transitioned to an elbow sleeve. Just a while back he started wearing an arm brace. In the past, he has made a statement that the reason he wear it is that "it gives me strength and finesse." A large articulated brace like his primarily gives you elbow stability, it does not give you strength or finesse. It can limit you in several ways..........and it is only worn to support of potentially weak structures. The support can be for any of several reasons, but the most common is elbow ligament damage.............most commonly the medial and lateral collateral ligament. He denies having had surgery that led to its need. He has done quite well so far, but those type of injuries are such that you worry about them for the future, especially if the structures that were damaged have not been yet addressed by surgery.

Just a thought to keep in mind.

By the way, in the picture below, he has added to his repertoire by also wearing a heavy wrist splint, signifying some sort of wrist injury/weakness.

I see Clowney V2 with Thibodeaux. And for good reasons. 1st Clowney after he was drafted we heard about his lack of work and him pulling himself from a game (or was it multiple?). The biggest thing he took plays off. Fast forward to now and we are already hearing about this type situation. Meanwhile, Hutchinson, Johnson, Walker and other Edge guys are being said to go 150% whistle to whistle. And are workout warriors. A prospect from UoH is doing 225 38 times! So, before we grab Thibodeaux, I would love to get one of the other players. And what CND said also raises another perhaps issue we don't want (see Clowney and his knee).

Did you hear Seth say how when he watched the games of Thibs, he didn't see the plays taken off?

Is David Andrews slightly undersized?

Was Myers slightly undersized?
Yes Myers was < 300 lbs so that's undersized for any NFL Olineman isn't it, unless they play in a ZB system ?
And we traded with Denver for Myers because of his skills as a ZB center, right ?
Andrews the Pats lineman, dunno much about him ?

He was small coming out of Georgia.

Clowney "doesn't take plays off for the gamecocks" arguments was a regular comeback pre Draft. Once in the NFL, "takes plays off" became quite obvious.

We've been down this road with the oKoYe's/Clowney's of the world.

Hopefully this franchise has learned something. (Doubtful)

Plus CnD said we should be worried about injuries when it comes to Thibs.

Hopefully for once they will take a clean prospect like Sauce/Neal etc... If you're going to take a chance on a guy it might as well be Stingley. Not that I want Caserio to do this.

I feel like you're (and you certainly aren't alone in this) a little hard on Clowney. He had the injury his rookie season. W/o that injury I feel he would have at least gotten closer to living up to the pre-draft hype.

The only thing Clowney did on the football field that maddened me was the insanely foolish penalties.

It wouldn't bother me too much if the Texans drafted Thibs. But I'd probably draft at least 10 players before him. I.E., get him at 13 but not 3.

Clowney played hard in Houston. We watched him run down ball carriers too. The narrative starts rolling and never stops. They may pass on Thibs and then he wind up in the afc and becomes a double digit sack guy and posters start whining.

Players Expected to be Present at the Draft

The NFL announced a list of 21 players who are expected to be in attendance for this year’s draft. It is highlighted by Huntchinson, who is the consensus favorite to go to the Jaguars with the top pick.

Other players expected to go off the board early in the proceedings are also set to be in Vegas. N.C. State tackle Ickey Ekwonu, Alabama tackle Evan Neal LSU defensive end Kayvon Thibodeaux, Notre Dame safety Kyle Hamilton, and Cincinnati cornerback Ahmad “Sauce” Gardner are also on the list of attendees.

The rest of the players that are expected to be on hand on April 28 are listed below.

Ole Miss quarterback Matt Corral
Mississippi State tackle Charles Cross
Georgia defensive tackle Jordan Davis
Georgia linebacker Nakobe Dean
Washington cornerback Kyler Gordon
Florida State edge rusher Jermaine Johnson II
Boston College offensive lineman Zion Johnson
Purdue edge rusher George Karlaftis
Utah linebacker Devin Lloyd
USC wide receiver Drake London
Ohio State wide receiver Chris Olave
Alabama wide receiver Jameson Williams
Liberty quarterback Malik Willis
Ohio State wide receiver Garrett Wilson
Georgia defensive tackle Devonte Wyatt

1. Gardner
2. Stingley (still unsure about the foot)
3. Booth
4. Elam
5. Dax Hill (move from FS to CB)

All with 1st round grades. I like the Washington CBs, just not in the Texans system.

I wouldn't take any other CB until the 3rd. There's a huge dropoff.
I would think about taking Booth at #13 - how say you?

I would like to trade down a bit for another 2nd day pick. I'm worried that the best player on the board at #13 will be a WR. And I just don't think the Texans want to go in that direction. Fortunately, there are more teams looking for WRs in the 1st round than there are 1st round graded WRs. If the Falcons & Jets go WR at #8 and #10, the run is on and the calls will be coming. The Packers and Chiefs have the draft capital to make it happen.

Packers in particular are an ideal trade partner with two firsts and seconds with a clear need that is still relatively unadressed by the team. I think (hope) with Rodgers being more vocal with their FO he has shared his thoughts on who he wants (expects) them to acquire…. and that player just so happens to require them to move up to 13 :)

Did you hear Seth say how when he watched the games of Thibs, he didn't see the plays taken off?

Watch film and maybe plays off is the wrong way to say it. He slows up if a few teammates are near the ball. Nobody is saying he is whistle to whistle though. Besides, the attitude and work ethic issues are still there.

I'm thinking Nick is going to move from 13. Probably trade down and get a 20some pick and a 2nd out of it. I think he and the staff like a player they will not get after 5 so they stay at 3. Maybe Edge or maybe OL. 13 I feel is the trade spot. If we move for 13 to 25 say. We likely get:

25th- 1st round
2nd round 1st 3rd of the round pick
3rd middle to late pick

Hypothetical so I don't even know who has 25. But I can see a deal like this

I've had an Olineman at #3 and interior Dlineman at #13 but I'm starting to warm up to the idea of Sauce at #3 and Jermaine Johnson or Karlaftis at #13. These could be huge pieces toward improving our pass defense. We've got some serious QB's coming up this year.

Under this scenario, I'm going for best available Oline top of 2nd round...someone like Linderbaum is a possible target and then moving to RB/WR/S with my 3rd and 4th round picks.

I'd like to find a LB, TE, possibly another CB late with ST value and that's a draft.

I'm very interested to see how this draft plays out for the Texans. What I expect is speed and aggressiveness over size/length on defense and power on offense. That's why I keep mocking Ikem and Parham on offense and Asamoah or Domann on defense. I think someone is going to reach for Breece Hall in the 1st round so I look at the RB's later in the draft that can run between the tackles with authority...like Snoop Conner and Ty Davis-Price.

Speed, power and aggressiveness is what I'm looking for. If the player(s) selected also have size and/or length, that will be incidental, luck of the draw. For example, if Hutchinson drops to 3.

Falcons could be a trade down partner for the Texans.

Falcons Eyeing QBs With No. 8 Pick?
April 16th, 2022 at 10:05am CST by Ben Levine

The post-Matt Ryan era has started in Atlanta, and while the organization may have inked Marcus Mariota to a deal, there’s a good chance the organization selects a quarterback in the upcoming draft. League sources expect the Falcons to select a signal-caller with the No. 8 pick in the NFL Draft, according to Jason La Canfora of CBS Sports.

Who would the Falcons ultimately select with that pick? Per ESPN’s Jeremy Fowler (on Twitter), the Falcons are a potential landing spot for Liberty quarterback Malik Willis. The reporter notes that most scouts believe Willis is more of a project and won’t be ready to start during his rookie campaign, which would make him an ideal pairing with someone like Mariota.

Of course, with a handful of QB-needy teams ahead of them in the draft (including the Panthers at No. 6, who Fowler also mentions as a suitor for Willis), the Falcons front office can’t put all of their eggs in one basketball in pursuit of the Liberty QB. We heard recently that the team met with Ole Miss alum Matt Corral. North Carolina’s Sam Howell was the third QB to earn a top-3o visit with the Falcons.

After losing out on Deshaun Watson and trading away Ryan, the Falcons signed Mariota to a two-year contract. The former Titan and Raider is in line to start for the first time since 2019, but he would likely provide a short-term solution at the position at best. Mariota went 2-4 during his six-game stint as Tennessee’s starter in ’19, although he did toss seven touchdowns vs. only two interceptions.

The Falcons would be wise to stand pat. I don't think any of the top quarterbacks are worth what it would take for them to move up.

I expect 1-8 to go chalk. I think #13 is where the Texans could make a deal with someone.

Falcons may be targeting that Alabama boy in 2023

I'm starting to get the impression you kind of like Gardner for the Texans.

There's about half a dozen players I'd be thrilled about if the Texans drafted them and Gardner is one. And I'm really not saying to myself "I like so-and-so better" for the Texans at #3...and I think that's because they have holes every where. Huge holes. They could draft two guys for the secondary with their first two picks, two offensive linemen or two guys for the DL and I'd be OK with it.
