2nd round DJ Swearinger

Out of 100 plays Cush may read and recognize 99 of them that D.J. wouldn't. This may have been the one.

Or perhaps Swaggg is putting in some real time in the film room ...

https://vine.co/v/OADKmHJh2ng

... I think the truth is he was actually raised by a pack of wild linebackers and now thinks he's one of them.

I agree with the overall sentiment, but Dj was a second round pick. He should have came in knowing how to tackle. That's not the kind of thing you need to be teaching guys playing at this level.

Besides, lots of tackles are made without wrapping a guy up. Some guys will go down when a stout 210 lb safety clotheslines him. A lot of guys. Ahmad Bradshaw isn't one of those guys & Dj should have known that.

Still, I'm happy with Swagg. He's a piece to the puzzle. & what he brings, this team desperately needs.

He'll be making plays again. He's been one of the bright spots on this defense all year.

Deluded much?

No mention of DJ playing w one arm? Never mind giving him credit for playing injured. I realize that's too much for some people.

should we give him credit for playing at 70 - 80%?
is he causing himself some long term damage by not resting and healing?
or is he hurting the team because he can't wrap up properly with just the one good arm?
do we know that Swearinger at 70-80% is better than Pleasant at 100%?

apparently O'Brien thinks so or Swearinger would be resting and healing.

I'm getting tired of his act. He's always looking for the big play rather than making a play. He played terribly against the Colts. Had a sure INT bounce off his helmet because he's looking to put a lick on someone, missed a tackle because he tries to strip the bell.

DJ is awful in coverage. Big hitter, but gets bit too easily. Bust at round 2 Imhop.

I would say RAC is the one making that call but yeah, what does that say about the other guys?

He's one of the leaders of our defense. Let that sink in.

Way too early to call him a bust.

He does force plenty of fumbles and he does make big plays. I think he just hunts for them too often and doesn't know when the team needs him to just not take the risk. That kind of thing comes with experience..

I think he'll be alright. This year is a wash and we are not going any where so we may as well see if he can improve over the weeks.

Usually with you, FW, but who said we're not going anywhere? If Swearinger was halfway disciplined on the field we may very well be 5-1 instead of 3-3.

Guy does some good things but he's definitely a liability at this point. His coverage and tackling is absolutely abhorrent and costly.

The whole team is a liability at this point. They're still learning their roles & responsibilities. I think of September & October as an extended preseason. Come November & December, we'll see what we got. As long as we keep our heads above water.... 4-4 through October, then we'll have a shot. Even if we're 3-5, we have a shot.

Yes, I'd love to be 5-1 right now. Yes there was a very real possibility that we could be... most probably should be. But it's not over. Would have made the rest of the season easier, but who wants easy?

I also hold this hope. The hope that everyone is still learning their roles and learning the philosophy behind both the offense and defense and how they're supposed to work.

But please, someone tell me that O'Brien's and Crennel's grand schemes were not dependent upon continued super performances all year by Foster and Watt. That doesn't seem sustainable.

So when everyone has their roles & responsibilities down and can just play without thinking, then we'll really see what this team is about. As I recall, it took a while for Kubiak's offense to take shape. So I suspect a transition is at work.

Me.
It's much less stressful
:)

I did say earlier I think he should be benched. He goes for those big plays because he's selfish. He just doesn't want to stick to his job and make the highlight play. So his time on the field IMO should be limited until he realizes he's part of a team and when he gives up big plays like that.

I do think this team can make the playoffs which would be nice (I'm not one for tanking, that's no fun.) but I just meant I personally don't think this team is winning a superbowl with Fitz as QB, would sure love it if he proved me wrong though.

No they're not. That's a cop out response. Is Arian Foster a liability? Is Watt a liability? Most of the team is doing what they're supposed to most of the time. The people who are ****ing up are doing the same bad things that they've always done. Fitz is still making bad decisions, Brooks is still kicking in timely false starts, Swearinger is still playing like a fool who thinks the object of the game is to knock the other guy out and/or get on the nights ESPN highlights. Won't tackle, can't cover is an ugly combination in a safety.

DJ Swearinger said he heard it from everyone in his family on how bad he played Thursday. Said his grandma told him he played "horrible"

Swearinger heard it from all of his family members. Dad said, "Bro, what are you doing? I didn't teach you how to tackle?" His mom and sisters chimed in as well.

And Grandma didn't mince any words.

"Grandma said, 'You, you horrible!'" Swearinger said, in his best grandma voice. "'I don't like that DJ. I don't like that DJ.'"

Swearinger could only agree. He told her it wouldn't happen again.

"I knew it was bad during the game," he said. "Just a horrible performance."

He attributed it to bad technique. Tackling was part of his problem, and that's something the Texans are working on this week.

"You have to make sure that guys are taking the proper angles," coach Bill O'Brien said. "There is a lot of different types tackles. There is the straight-on tackle. There is the two-man tackle where they're both converging on a ball carrier. There is the angle tackle where they can use the sideline. There is the open field tackle when it's just one on one, say on a punt or kickoff, something like that.

With any player, you have to ask do the plus plays outweigh the minus plays. In DJ's case, the minus plays ( missed tackles, blown coverages, penalties) far outweigh the plusses, IMO. He can get better and he's just a 2nd yr player. Hopefully he gets his act together.

He can instantly improve just by playing smarter and being where he needs to be. I've seen Swearinger out of position far too often. He also tries to strip the ball loose or force a fumble way too much rather than properly tackle.

I don't mind that he's trying to make a big play but not every play has to be a big play on defense. Make a proper tackle and move on to the next play. I'd rather force a team to punt than attempting a forced turnover which ends up leading to a big first-down catch instead. If he just allows his skill set to shine and plays within Romeo Crennel's system he'll be fine and likely a future pro bowler. If he continues to play so selfishly it only hurts the team.

Also the personal fouls and penalties. He's doing a better job with that...

Yup, I'm pretty much done with this dude. One decent game out of 7 ain't going to cut it. He's probably one of the worst cover safety's in the league and he sucks at tackling. The dude's like a missile that's missing it's guidance mechanism. He hits his own players half the time. The other half he hits the runner and bounces off due to never wrapping up

Allowing Quin to walk was a huge mistake when we did it and even moreso now

IIRC, he's rated as the 3rd from last safety by PFF. I can't stand him and can't believe he was just another wasted 2nd round pick by Rick Smith who continues to blow 2nd round picks and somehow manages to keep his job. Rick Smith and Swearinger are total ass-clowns.

I'm guessing he got chewed out after two games where he was freaking that on certain plays guys weren't picking up there assignments, and instead of him adjusting he just flailed his arms and yelled

And it might have been his man to start with

Or maybe the guy that kept missing his assignments didn't play, so DJ didn't have to keep covering for others... allowing him to do his job.

We'll never know

edit: but DJ wasn't calling the plays now was he?

TMZ reports that a police report has been filed in Houston alleging that Swearinger skipped out on a $20,000 bill from Espi Motors for work they did on his pickup truck.

According to the report, Swearinger brought his truck into the shop to have a variety of bells and whistles installed, including matte black paint with a Batman logo, speakers, new wheels, custom grill and a train horn, and then balked at the cost for the work when it was done. He then allegedly took his car from the shop without paying for the work. The shop tried to track Swearinger down, but were unable to do so despite the distinctive look of the truck that Swearinger’s allegedly driving around town.

How the **** do you not see this monstrosity driving down a street? Please cut his ass.

On @JungleBoi_Swagg behalf @BAM_Sports says DJ is in Florida training, this is a misunderstanding - he will let appropriate people sort this

:kubepalm:

LOL, that comment section is worth the read.. My personal favorite.

:spit:

Lol, no doubt. Like these too

For that much I hope a set of spinners were part of the deal
.

He doesn’t have to pay. He is DJ Swag. He does a regular radio show here in Houston. I listen because I like to challenge myself to understand what he is saying.

Shoot the Bat Signal into the Houston sky tonight and you’ll catch this Pimp My Ride welcher.

Maybe Bruce Wayne was supposed to pick up the bill

:kubepalm:

Lol. Maybe Robin took it

I do not like this guy. I have never liked this guy and every year that goes by I find new reasons to keep not liking him.

Can't wait until the Texans part with this temperamental, idiot man-child.

I've never been too fond of the guy, but I'm going to wait for the rest of the story to unfold. Maybe the shop was trying to work him over? Dunno
If he was not provided the detailed bill, then he had every right to take the truck until they provide it. There is no dispute resolution which prevents taking your own vehicle until due process has occurred.

It is NOT their vehicle and it can't be held hostage to a whim. They have to prove they have properly filed a mechanics lien AND had a finding that the service was actually provided. I may have some minor details wrong, but you don't sign the title over when you take your vehicle to the shop. It's still your vehicle.

There has been no charge of trespassing, so I can't deduce it was not obtained properly, just without payment pending resolution of detailed billing.

There is recourse for both parties. It sounds to me like embarrassment will work for the shop better than the facts.

Swag had a case of:

Still though, as rich as he is that should be a drop in the bucket.

He should have just said, :elvis: and went on about his bidness.

D.J. Swearinger's rep has issued an official statement on the story to SportsTalk790:

“This incident was an unfortunate misunderstanding, and we are working on resolving the issue. DJ is just focused right now on his offseason training and looking forward to the upcoming season.”

“This matter is still pending, and is currently under review by the District Attorney’s office,” said Deputy Thomas Gilliland, a sheriff’s office spokesman. “No charges were accepted by the DA’s office, they wanted to speak to the other party, Mr. Swearinger, before further review of possible charges.”

Gilliland said Swearinger went to the shop Monday to pay for work on his truck, but had previously called and said he wanted an invoice that listed the various components installed on his truck. When shop employees said the receipts and invoices were at another location, Swearinger left in the truck.

TMZ silliness.
