Brown can be cut for 2.5 million in dead money but save the team 7 million. Next year he has zero guaranteed money and would cost the team nothing to release him.

IMO one of two things are at play here.
1) Texans using this Okung visit as leverage to get brown to rework his deal to free up more money (Nuk extension)
2) They have gone full Patriots. Cut a man a year before he starts to fall off. His injury has the potential to be pretty severe and not allow him to return in time for TC

Other possibilities:
1.) This could be an indictment on Su'a Filo. Perhaps they plan to slide Newton to guard.. Or, perhaps they are considering Duane Brown sliding inside post injury.

2.) Brown may be on PUP... and this signing provides great depth and flexibility along the OL and opens up a lot of options for 2017 (a choice to cut Brown, Newton, Sua'Filo), depending on performance expectations.

3.) They sign Okung and turn around and trade Newton, Sua'Filo, or Clark (probably Newton).

I wanted Rick to sign Okung before CND listed the myriad of injuries Okung has sustained.

He has never played in 16 games.

It's everyone's worst fear. Looks like the Texans believe Brown is done.

If Okung is signed, I still think the Texans need to look at OT in the 1st. Considering his injury history, it's just too risky to count on Okung for 16+ games.

And that's another way to look at it. I was looking at it like Okung is insurance for the first part of the year until DB comes back. But if they're thinking DB is done for good, then... yeah... OT suddenly becomes very important.

We can read into an okung signing as bad news (because of the brown injury) but would people think the same if we drafted a tackle in the first or second round?

We have an injured left tackle.
X is a jag at LG.
center is likely to be a rookie?
Jeff Allen will be a new starter in this scheme
Newton underperformed at RT

I expect and hope we'll add more talent but either way this line will take some time to gel and i don't expect a fast start from them. Now that qb and rb needs are filled this is to me our most dire area of need.

Not very encouraging as far as DB's 50% chance of return for single in-season game to begin with...............and relying on Okung for "insurance"........I'd call him anything but "insurance."

2015 week 7 turf toe recurrent injury........then later in the following a practice that week, ankle and calf injury.....missed 1 week.......would ........have been 2 weeks if it were not for the Bye
2015 week 15 calf injury missed 2 weeks

2016 2nd playoff game in Jan shoulder dislocation/ extended labrum tear from 3rd week in 2014
2016 February shoulder surgery (at least a 6 month rehab)

BTW, his last surgery.....the shoulder surgery..... was on his left shoulder.....an injury/surgery of major significance for any player...........let alone a Left Tackle.

Well, Mussop already asked the question "Who's he gonna start for" when potential 1st round tackles were discussed a day or two ago. So while I don't know about a 2nd rounder, yes - there would be a fair number of folks (including me) who would interpret a 1st round OT selection as very possibly saying something about DB's injury.

If D Browns injury is as bad as some think then first round OT a no brainer Absolutely one by the second round.
 
The ongoing saga of Russell Okung's free agency continues after he reportedly met with the Steelers on Sunday.

Okung has been offered a contract by Pittsburgh, according to ESPN's Jeremy Fowler, but is set to visit the Houston Texans next, per ESPN's Adam Schefter.

The one-time Pro Bowl left tackle previously visited with the Lions and Giants, according to reports. The Seahawks made a "strong offer" to retain their 2010 first-round pick earlier in the week, according to the NFL Network's Ian Rapoport. Okung, who is coming off shoulder surgery and serving as his own agent in negotiations, essentially confirmed his visit with the Steelers on Sunday with a pair of pictures posted on his Twitter account – one of the team's six Super Bowl trophies, and another with Steelers free-agent offensive lineman Kelvin Beachum. Interestingly enough, Beachum reportedly has a visit scheduled with the Seahawks on Monday.

With Okung reportedly meeting with the Titans, something worth noting is that the 28 year old grew up in the Houston area. The Texans have already made a big splash this offseason, signing Brock Osweiler to be their quarterback.

Doesn't bother you that he's looking at someone who sat out the whole season with a torn Achilles?

It took almost 2 years for Demeco to look like Demeco after his Achilles. They pretty much cut Foster because they don't expect much production after his torn Achilles.

So let's go look at a Safety who sat out all las TV season with an Achilles.

Nothing wrong with him visiting. Team doing due diligence. If they offer him anything more than vet minimum and a place on the PS... yeah then I would be concerned

All I'm saying is it's good that we're turning over all the rocks in our search.
They haven't signed the guy.
Who else is available at safety. The Ravens just came to terms with Weddle. I don't know of anyone worth having being still available.

Actually, I thought about that too.
Then I figure if we didn't it must have been that as a vet, his price tag was a bit steep (he got a $26 mil/4-yr deal from the Ravens).

Perhaps they talked to his agent and figured that his terms weren't in the best interest of the team. Or maybe Weddle told them "I ain't interested in Houston"

We don't know what the FO did and did not do with regards to Weddle so I'm not gonna give them grief about it. I wanted him here but not under a 4 year deal for a safety over 30
 
1st, I questioned why are we looking at a Safety coming off an Achilles tear.

I am told we're just looking under every rock & we prefer it that way.

I suggested it would have been nice to look under the Weddle rock. ObsiWan replied we probably didn't because...

So I challenge his original position preferring Rick do his due diligence looking under every stone.

It doesn't matter if the Texans did or did not contact Weddle, I'm questioning whether he wants Rick to be thorough or if he's allowed to selectively separate the wheat from the chaff.
 
Newsday's Kimberley Martin reports both the Jets and Texans are "trying to sign" free agent DB Antonio Allen.
Allen missed all of last season with a torn Achilles' but should be at or near 100 percent now. At 6'1/210, he has safety size, but Allen did dabble at cornerback for coach Rex Ryan's Jets in 2014. He'd also help on special teams. Mar 16 - 9:29 AM

27 YOA 7th round in 2012.
Allen entered the 2013 preseason competing with newly signed Jaiquawn Jarrett for the starting free safety job.[11] Allen finished the 2013 season with 60 tackles, a sack, and an interception for a touchdown.

Allen was waived by the Jets on August 7, 2015 after suffering an Achilles tendon injury.[12] After clearing waivers, he was placed on injured reserve on August 10, 2015.[13]

Man guys, what the heck happened to him? I know he's 31 now but he fell off a cliff so fast. I remember when there was talk of possibly pairing him with Andre Johnson four or five years ago when he was still a 1,000 yard receiver with the Chiefs.

Is 30 the new "decline age" for wideouts these days? Calvin Johnson, one of the all-time greats in our generation, retired at 30 himself.

No such thing as Jerry Rice or Tim Brown in today's game. I still have hope that Andre Johnson, soon to be 35, may have another big year or two left in him. Whichever team he signs with.
