2016 Free agent targets

Looks like the Jags are going to sign Malik Jackson. If they work it out that's a good signing for them. They've been looking for that combo end ever since Bradley got hired.
 
Broncos released starting OG Louis Vasquez, TE Owen Daniels, and LS Aaron Brewer (who just signed 4 year extension last year). Looks like the salary cap purge has begun.

Edit: Also restructured Ware and Clady.

Hopefully? Off ft, screw Denver...I'm glad Malik is going to the Jags, although it's not very good news for us. I don't really care for Osweiler, but they better try and give in and sign him to the closest number possible (that he wants) or they will not see another super bowl appearance anytime soon.
 
If Rick Smith pulls off Brock, Lamar Miller, and Travis Benjamin people would still complain around here. At least it's going to be a few interesting days around here.

They can come to terms though. Happens every year. Deals can't become "finalized" until FA officially starts yet deals are announced 1 minute after the deadline every year.

First, Mike Florio at ProFootballTalk.com reported this morning the Dolphins are hoping to close a deal with defensive end Mario Williams today. Williams, the former first overall draft pick of the Houston Texans in 2006, is a street free agent who has visited the Dolphins and New York Giants. He can sign before the start of free agency.

Their FA approach is wild for sure. However, they can cut Cameron Wake with little negative cap impact and can also rescind the transition tag from Olivier Vernon if they need room.

The thinking is that if they bring in Mario, they likely either drop the franchise tag from Olivier Vernon, or release Cameron Wake. Those moves reduce their cap # by $12.7 or $8.4 Million respectively.

But I agree with the overall point of your post - The Dolphins appear to be in prime position to be the team that wins the off-season, and then doesn't see it translate to more wins.

Preaching to the choir there. I've been saying that Oz should give serious thought about leaving because Denver is going to be unable to retain some good players if they pay him.

Kind of related, but there are also rumors out there that he doesn't like Kubiak's offense, and doesn't love the idea of being coached by Kubiak for the next four years.

I will say that while I've liked Osweiler from the time Denver drafted him, any NFL QB saying they don't like Kubiak's offense kind of sets off alarm bells for me. Then again, the key word in that first sentence is "rumors".
 
Malik got PAID! A 6 year 90 million with 42 guaranteed kind of paid. The Jags don't have the supporting cast he had in Denver. We'll see, but damn

Why so? Manning didn't care for it and Os learned how to be an NFL QB under Manning. I'm sure that he wants the same control and be the same type Offensive Coordinator/QB that Manning was. Just a hunch on my part, though.

It's probable but you have to keep in mind the Broncos are limited in cap space even after Peyton Manning's retirement. They are practically letting two good defensive lineman go with no chance to re-sign either of them unless they lose Brock Osweiler.

They already franchised tag Von Miller. Ideally, they would have liked to have franchise tagged Brock Osweiler if they had gotten a long-term deal done with Von Miller last off-season.

Not being able to franchise tag Osweiler hurt them.
It allowed him to enter free agency. The Texans now have a shot.

The Broncos can't offer much more than $15 million a year over a three-year deal to Brock Osweiler. Which is what they reportedly offered (and a performance-based contract at that).

The Texans can top any offer the Broncos can make. I don't really consider that leverage. Unless you think the Broncos will increase their offer another $1 million or $2 million per year? If they do that they'll lose every other key free agent they have. Their D-Line depth would be thin.

The Broncos are already offering the best they can.
Leverage to me means you can do a lot more, IMO.

When every team realizes your salary cap situation it's tough.
The Texans know they can offer more money. Do they want to?

Me thinks the Broncos need to move on and focus on signing RG3. They may have to draft a quarterback at the end of the first round as well.

I'll be shocked if Big Brock returns to Denver.

Truth be told, I think he's using the Broncos as leverage.
Now that their reported offer of 3 years, $45 million is leaked...

The Texans now realize they can offer more and plan to do so soon.

Between Miller and Ivory, I would strongly push for Miller. Both have had high yd/carry stats. But Ivory's injury history reads like a long rap sheet including many missed games. Although he has maintained a career 4.6 yds/carry, I believe that his truly amazing number of injuries have his days finally numbered just like Arian. Miller underwent left shoulder labrum surgery the season before the 2012 Draft and came back in 2012 only to be used sparingly as he had residual shoulder limitations throughout that year. He missed 7 scattered games, but when he was able to play, he did well with an ave of 4.9 yds/carry. Outside of a concussion in 2013, with no missed games, that year was injury free with a 4.0 yd/carry ave. In 2014, he played through relatively minor left shoulder separation and knee issues but still missed no games and ended up with a 5.1 yd/carry ave. Last year, in week 2, he suffered a lateral ankle sprain where his carries were ineffective, but just for that one game. The next week, he quickly bounced back. In week 15, he suffered a quad strain, tried to play through it until he had to leave the game. In that game and the subsequent last 2 games of the season, his performance was poor.........leaving him with no missed games throughout the year, and still a 4.0 yds/carry ave. Miller has much less wear on his body that Ivory, and although his history of injuries still seem to be spread out and less severe that of Ivory, he does have that plowing power game that could lead to unwanted results if he's run to death like Arian was. Miller has never carried more than 217 times in one season, although I would not want to see him carry consistently in the 300s (extrapolated to 17 games) like Arian did.

I dont think any team should want to have their back at 300+ carries at the end of the year. Not many guys can take that kind of abuse and maintain health, and effectiveness the next year

You're thinking of the 400 touch rule has a very high correlation to decreased performance.

300 carries is routine for feature backs including the long careered guys.
