2015 Houston Cougars Season

D1-AA, or FCS, has a 24 team playoff. 16 teams face off in the 1st round, winners play 8 teams that had 1st round byes.

D2 and D3 both have a 28 team playoff. 24 teams in the 1st round with 4 teams getting 1st round byes. 4 of the winners of the 1st round would play those teams with byes in the 2nd round based on how they're seeded (I would assume), while the rest of the winners play each other.

All 3 divisions go 5 weeks to get through the tourney. A 16 team playoff for the big boys would just take 4 weeks.

You want your sport to have a champion at the end of the year? No, let's just give everyone participation ribbons. Or send 66% of the division to meaningless bowl games.

You can still have bowls , GoDaddy, Independence, Famous Idaho Potato, whatever crap bowl you want for the MAC2 to play the Sun Belt 3 or even for teams that didn't make the playoffs, say TCU, Florida State, Northwestern, Oregon, Ole Miss, whoever. You could even incorporate some bowls into the tourney. Hell, it's what they're doing now for the 4 team playoff.

The bowls don't have to go anywhere. I get that the school/conference gets money playing in a bowl game, but the game itself is absolutely meaningless. Georgia vs UCLA in the Sun Bowl means nothing. Ohio State vs Sam Houston St in the regular season would have more meaning than that game. Notre Dame vs Oklahoma State in the Sun Bowl 1st round playoff game, somebody might actually watch that game on TV. Michigan St vs Houston 1st round playoff in the Liberty Bowl and I'm actually watching a Liberty Bowl for the 1st time in forever.

Every other division of college football does it, why can't the big boys do it?
BECAUSE SOME WANT TO WIN IN THE PRESS and are snobs.

David vs Goliath is a no win scenario for Goliath. If you win it was expected, but losing is embarrassing.

Holy crap that's a lot of teams LOL. Since the model is set, I'd be OK with it if they just made the bowl games playoff matchups. Again, why reinvent the wheel? But the regular season argument just holds no water to me. None. You got Ohio State that has one loss to a damn good, highly ranked Mich St. team and they are out of the playoff picture. Then you have Oklahoma in the playoffs after their one loss was againt Texas. Yes, that Texas. The sucky team. So I know the rhetoric has always been early losses don't hurt as badly as late season losses and that's why we have this, but that just means not all of the regular season counts, right? I mean, you got the teams playing the obligatory cupcake directional tech schools early on, so those shouldn't count, then you have early losses not hurting, so those don't count. What are we down to? A six game regular season that matters?

GTFO of here with that argument. You got a bunch of assholes sitting in a room drinking scotch and smoking cigars just deciding on their own who is worthy and who is not. That's no kind of champion I can respect. Settle it on the field.

You do realize that the two teams you chose for your example don't make your point at all right? You're trying to water the season down to one single game and say that Ohio St is just as deserving as Oklahoma because their loss is better?

But the reason Oklahoma is getting in is precisely because every game matters, not just one. The entire season is important.

Ohio St played three quality opponents the entire season: at Virginia Tech (W), Michigan St (L), at Michigan (W).

Oklahoma played six: at Tennessee (W), West Virginia (W), Texas Tech (W), at Baylor (W), TCU (W), at Oklahoma St (W).

So yeah, Oklahoma has a worse loss. They are also the champion of a power five conference while Ohio St is not. And they ended up with the same record despite playing a drastically more difficult schedule. If anything, what this system shows is that the best way to the playoffs is to go undefeated (Clemson, Iowa). And if you do drop a game you better make damn sure you have some skins on the wall to make up for it.

Congratulations to the Cougars football team for a job well done, battling all those injuries.

I'm mighty proud of the guys.

I'm seeing a lot of projections that put the Coogs in the Chick-fil-A Peach Bowl against Florida State.

Yeah, that's kinda what I was thinking too. If they get a Fiesta bid, I think they play Notre Dame.

Wow. What a game. I was sweating until there was no way the Coogs could lose. As in, I didn't breathe easy until there was a minute left....lol.

Pretty questionable clock management by Temple. Not all of it was directly their fault, but much of it was.

Love the avatar, PhillyTexanFan! Nice job owning the bet. Props. :)

UH about to get a big payday from this bowl game. And it should more than cover the cost of Herman's new contract.

Money well spent :texanbill:

What's the pay out for the peach bowl? Was kinda holding out hope we'd get that Fiesta bowl invite but whatever..

The payout for the Peach Bowl is the same as the Fiesta, since both are part of the new playoff system (the so-called New Year's Six). Unfortunately, the Fiesta was never going to choose Houston over Ohio St or Notre Dame. But Florida St is still a great opportunity for UH to get some national attention.

The conference gets $4 million for UH getting into the Peach Bowl. All the qualifying money gets put into a pool and the conference divvies it out to the schools in whatever manner they choose. Some give each school a percentage or their cut and some give each school an equal amount. I'm not sure of the arrangement in the American but either way UH will receive additional money for being the highest rated non-Power 5 team.

Ok cool, I thought the pay out was like those other lesser bowls

Peach Bowl is nice and all but, how can they rank UH at 18th spot? It is unbelievable. UH beat Temple, Navy and, Memphis. UH only loss came against UConn and game played by backup. I wish, Ward Jr. was able to play that day. So close of having a perfect season. Next year, College Football Playoff Rankings committee better give UH more credit with their ranking.

Ha, thanks. I actually tried Google, but was short of time and brains (based on the sites Google suggested) to figure out an answer that made sense.

The reality of being in a group of 5 conference. Power 5 teams have the clout and get the SOS argument. One of the reasons why UH and the Big 12 have been talking to each other.

I understand power 5 have the clout. However, it is just too obvious of how they rank the team and it is unfair for them to do so. They just need to stop monopolizing how power balance should stay within power 5 conferences. It is just so silly. UH were one of the power house Uni during SWC era and just because other Unis didn't want UH to be name brand Uni, why public and media let this unfair treatment happened? Other schools should be focusing in improving their program to be better and cutting out school that you feel threaten by using their power won't improve your program in a long run. I truly hope that group of 5 be able to obtain more equal opportunity in the future.

It's why I said upthread the "champion" is no kind of champion I can respect. You got a bunch of assholes sitting in a back room drinking scotch and smoking cigars and just deciding who should be champion. It's total BS and no other level of the sport (or any other sport) does it.

Even a perfect season would not have gotten us into the playoffs. The selectors will always find a way to wiggle out of selecting anyone outside the POWER FIVE, even with losses by those they select. The eye test is flawed when you see what you expect to see.

I'm thinking about going to the Peach Bowl. Anyone else going?
Am I anyone? If yes, then no; no.

ps Old computer algorithm language from the days of fortran.

PLEASE; PLEASE; PLEASE take this with the humor for which it was intended. It's hard to keep your sense of humor on this board, but do; there is no try.

The UConn loss really hurts, regardless of what excuses could be made for why it happened. It still shouldn't have happened.

Having said that, UH really got hammered all year in the rankings and there isn't a real reason why. Based on resume, I have them at #11. In the end it doesn't matter. They still got the top non-power five spot. And after the UConn loss, that's all they were playing for.

While I might quibble about the #18 ranking, I have no problem with them playing for the Bowl game they got. What I object to is the fact that it's all they were playing for before the UConn loss. The UConn loss didn't matter. And we're supposed to care about every regular season game.
