2015 Houston Cougars Season

So the emergency meeting with the chancellor worked out and we found a way to offer him more money huh? Can't say we're not trying...I hope he accepts, but I know we have at most 1 more year with him before he bolts somewhere else. Pisses me off that we're in this position largely because of the way college football is and the conference we play in..
The conference we are playing in is doing very well indeed. With Navy, Memphis and our Cougars all spending time in the top 25. No! we're not one of the top 5 conferences, but we're in shouting range and climbing.

I think at 3mil without state tax right, maybe good enough deal for other Uni to rethink about how their offers will be to Herman. Besides, UH came out at 3mil on media tells me they still have some wiggle space to increase which makes other Uni to really cough up their offer. I think, this is a strategic plan by UH to keep Herman in Houston. They lost two coaches to A&M and Baylor and I do think they learned their lesson from past experiences. Question is how much more of a wiggle space UH got if there's any.

How long is his contract? 3M one time is one thing, but extending it adds money each year he stays. Perhaps new hires should always have a right of first refusal to match any new offer in their contract? But cost of living in Houston is definitely a plus for us.

According with Chronicle, a five-year contract worth at least $6.75 million with its new head football coach, and he will have to pay a hefty fee if he leaves early. Herman would have to pay $2.25 million to take another job before Feb. 18, 2018. Herman's contract is worth at least $6.75 million. However, several performance incentives ranging from winning a championship to keeping the team's GPA above 2.5 could help boost that figure.

According with Chronicle's info, Herman makes $1.35 million per year. I don't k now how they going to do this but I assume increase per year average to $3 million with remainder of his contract or extending another year as a five year contract with same incentives of an original contract.

I like this kind of contract much more than standardized pro forma immutable contracts. It permits a meeting of the minds and allows the addressing of the concerns of both parties to the contract.

You can always renegotiate early like they have apparently chosen to do, but are not obligated to do.

This contract seems to me favorable to coach than anything. Coach can always shop around every year for a better deal. I don't know enough about the law, but I wonder if you can make a contract without any negotiation with other school or pro for first a few years from commencement. So, the school able to evaluate and renegotiate with their own coach when necessary.

Well, the first thing that's gone right for Houston early was a delay of game on a punt. Our punter kicked it anyway (for a practice try, I guess) and the ball hit about the UConn 40 and bounced back to the 45. The real punt that followed was much better and put UConn on their 30.

Too early to get nervous, but I would like to see an old fashioned butt kicking today.

Just rumors I've heard but I heard Herman turned down an offer from Missouri. He's had contact with South Carolina but its not quite the step up he's looking for. Unless USC or Virginia Tech come in with an offer he might be staying at UH. I've heard from a lot of people that he wants the Texas job and may just bide his time at UH and build recruiting relationships in-state until Strong is fired from UT in a year or two.

Mercy. This means I have to root for Texas until further notice. That's going to feel dirty and disgusting. :D

Man, this kill-them-with-a-thousand-cuts offense Houston is running reminds me of the Kubiak-run Texan offense.

Time to open it up a little.

Not really. A coach under contract without an opt out would have to wait for his contract to expire before working for a competitor. But the NFL has made a living off of NOT honoring player contracts unless guaranteed. Most real contracts begin with the presumption that they are guaranteed as part of the consideration with specific language required to change that assumption.

Perhaps a non-compete clause is required to make it applicable.

But hey, you have real lawyers on this MB and I don't even stay at Holiday Inn Expresses.

1 loss completely overshadows 10 wins.

Yep. Typical Houston though. Not that they wouldn't have a difficult time against Navy next week, but still. That game pretty much means nothing now.

Nope. Just too many turnovers and injuries to overcome. It's not as if going undefeated would have done them any good anyway.

True as far as sniffing a national title, but it would have put them in a big money bowl game.

Missed the ending. How did Ward end up in the game for the last drive? I thought he has out?

In that last drive Postma got hit and hurt after getting rid of the ball for a 1st down. The hit was arguable late, but I won't go there any more than that. I have no idea his injuries, but I'm sure a little snooping around will turn up some info, something I'm going to go myself after the Stars game.

Ward actually came in twice after injuries to Postma. He was apparently simply moved down to backup rather than out as he recovers from an ankle injury. It make you think they have little faith in the next guy for whatever reason.

If the Coogs beat Navy and go on to win the AAC championship game, they will be in the Fiesta Bowl. The UConn loss doesn't change that.

Yeah, I tried to remember that yesterday. The Coogs didn't REALLY get hurt, but who didn't want a perfect season.
Everyone, sure. But maybe it took a little of the shine off Herman? I doubt it. However had Herman completed an undefeated season with the Coogs, he would have taken them as far as he will. He could never top that. At least now he has a carrot to reach for.

I didn't expect undefeated. I expected a loss against either Memphis or Navy, perhaps both. I did not expect a loss against UConn. That's why I made the comment above. As for taking us as far as he could, undefeated this season would have been nice, but not nearly as nice as an undefeated season that results in a CFP appearance. Next season starts with a game against Oklahoma, doesn't it? Undefeated next year would be damn nice.

But yeah, end result if they win against Navy and in the conference championship will still be a nice bowl game.

All of our damn injuries and inadequate depth finally caught up with us. Despite that, I still thought we were going to pull that game off. But losing to ******* UCONN eliminates so much of the success this team has earned this season. Coogs really need to beat a strong Navy team and then win the conference championship or we end up in some stupid Nestle Quik Bowl in some hell hole like Shreveport against Southwest Bumturd State.

I am not feeling good about Friday's game. We have looked pretty bad on offense the past month and Ward especially hasn't played well. We might have to pass more than normal to pull this one out and that isn't Ward's forte. I guess we will probably end up in some **** bowl against a 6-6 P5 team now.

I do get how this can seem disappointing considering what was in play before the UConn loss. But big picture, a bowl win against say a 7-5 team like Miami or a 6-6 team like Arizona, Kentucky, or Texas Tech would still be good for the program.

I'd rather get that matchup than 10-2 Marshall or 9-3 Air Force.

The only thing you can count on is if we win, something is wrong with the opponent to take away from the win and if we lose, it's because we REALLY weren't that good. The story has been written already in the press and has never changed.

Herman has withdrawn his name from the South Carolina job. I've also heard that he has turned down Missouri but that's not official.

UH fans not out of the woods yet though. There's a lot of smoke about USC turning the heat up on him and he and Jimbo Fisher are the top guys on LSU's coaching board.

That disappoints me IF, and ONLY IF he permitted his name to be considered in the first place. You can't control the hopes and speculation of others, but you can refuse to go along with, or even encourage, it.

He absolutely is permitting his name to be considered for jobs. UH is a stepping stone program and he's going to use his success at UH to catapult to a bigger school at some point. UH fans don't have to like it but that's the reality.

So tampering is acceptable?

31-17 Houston with 5 minutes and change in the 3rd.

What's up with the Guy Lewis thread? I guess our comments about his passing aren't welcome? Kind of uncool if you ask me.

RIP Guy V!! The man always had a moment to talk to me. Even right after winning the SWC tournament in Dallas. One thing people might or might not know is he was one of the nicest men you would ever want to meet. Even if you were just a kid, or just a guy who was a fan.

He had a long life, but hearing of his passing yesterday really saddened me.

With UH outside the power 5, it's inevitable Herman leaves. The only question is when. I'd like to see Baylor OC (and former Coog) Kendal Briles get the next shot.

Right, I just want UH to continue losing good coaches.

Seems like UH is a stepping stone to increase coaches value for bigger universities. When UH sees Herman is their future, they really need to make sure their offer is competitive. By keeping coach like Herman, UH should be able to have successful #s of wins every year, help attract more 4 stars and up Houston and Texas area prospects, increase revenue and so on. Make it happen UH.

Go Coogs!!!

That one was for Guy V!!!!! Well, I hope. I was slightly disappointed to see no "GVL" on their uni's today, basketball coach notwithstanding.

Just curious if anybody saw this.

About 8:00 left in the game. Navy had the ball around Houston's 35 yard line, maybe 40, can't remember. Down 21, Navy needs this score. 4th and 2. Navy hands the ball off and the RB got stopped cold after MAYBE a one yard gain. Houston's ball, right? No. Not only did the refs give him yardage, but a good yard and a half past the marker! No challenge by Turner or anybody else. Maybe one of the worst spots I've ever seen.

Obviously, Houston didn't need that stop in the end, but the game wasn't written in stone yet at that time. Could have been huge.

Just something that had me going nuts at the time....lol.

Yes. I noticed it at the time and I think Navy did too since they went with a hurry up offense at that point. The official was totally lost on that spot.

I think it may be that some of us are too young to remember him (I know I am) with respect to Guy Lewis. I do know of his importance and have always wondered why we didn't have buildings or statues for both Bill Yeoman and Guy Lewis (TDECU Stadium finally does for Bill Yeoman but that's not good enough for a man who made UH relevant).

R.I.P. to Guy Lewis and hope UH basketball can return to the glory days!
