2014 Texans Talk Mock Draft SELECTION

Alrighty, the spreadsheet and results pages are up to date with picks. I also updated the spreadsheet to reflect trades.

Through 3 rounds, here are the stats on selections by position and conference. The SEC is leading quite a bit, but the PAC 12 is doing very well proportionately compared to other conferences.

With the final pick in the 3rd round the San Francisco 49ers select...

Trai Turner - OG - LSU - SEC

Entering the draft as a redshirt sophomore, Turner is an athletic run blocker with a very high ceiling. The 49ers could use some depth on the interior O-Line and could also be proactive about replacing Mike Iupati. Iupati will be a FA next year and it's questionable if he will be re-signed as SF must also re-sign QB Colin Kapernick, pass rusher Aldon Smith, and WR Michael Crabtree. Turner is a high upside pick who could replace a departed Iupati or develop as a backup and replace Alex Boone when his contract is up in 2 years.

Dude must have been flying up boards. Couple of weeks ago he was pegged as a 7th rounder - UDFA according to CBS. They now have him as a 5th.

Good logic behind the pick though.

Good Stuff Dutch, throw down another for the SEC...

I think that it’s safe to say Jerrell Powe is NOT the future. With that said the biggest hole remaining on this team is directly in the center of the defense at the NT position, which is why I’m going to address this with one of the most polarizing defensive players remaining in this draft.

Daniel McCullers - DT - Tennessee - SEC

You can love him or you can hate him, but it’s hard to deny his presence on the football field. 6’7” – 352 LBS with almost 37” arms! This is the closest thing to a tree you’re going to find on a football field.

His long arms can help contribute in the ball swatting techniques we’ve developed here in recent years and his sheer size alone is more than enough to become a solid gap plugger and tying up necessary lineman.

Another great thing about a beast this size is that he’s never missed a game. People can say what they want about pursuing Vince Wilfork, but I will never sign off on bringing in a 350 pound man (I know ESPN calls him 325, but this dude is closer to 400 than 325 and 350 is being generous here) who has no Achilles to lean on, sorry.

I’ve seen McCullers take on 2 starting NFL OLinemen in Warmack (1st round) and Barrett Jones and could not be moved. I really like this guy and I know many hate him, but I think he’s gonna be good for us in the middle of that D.

1(101) Houston Texans (TexansFTW) ON THE CLOCK: 12:30pm - 4:30pm

2(102) Washington Redskins (kiwitexansfan) GET READY
3(103) Atlanta Falcons (JCTexan) GET READY
4(104) New York Jets (steelbtexan) PM'ed
5(105) Jacksonville Jaguars (The Pencil Neck) GET READY
6(106) Cleveland Browns (Dutchrudder) GET READY
7(107) Oakland Raiders (Rock N Randy) GET READY

I hope we go OL with this pick...

Love the pick.

Not a huge McCullers fan but the position needs to be addressed. At this point in the draft, you might as well take the best physical specimen.

I hope we go OL with this pick...

I wanted to initially, but I feel that this position was a little more glaring.

I also was only considering JuWuan James or Joel Bitino with the pick. Once both were gone, I felt my hands were tied on the other side of the ball.

Yeah, I knew you didn't like him. I hear you and respect that, I'm just a fan though.

Dude must have been flying up boards. Couple of weeks ago he was pegged as a 7th rounder - UDFA according to CBS. They now have him as a 5th.

Good logic behind the pick though.

I had him as a 4th-5th rounder when he declared. He was more athletic than I thought at the combine so I moved him up to fringe 3rd-4th rounder.

He had a good sophomore campaign and will only be 21 years old when the season starts. Very high upside, which is why he is higher on the board than some other available players.

With the 2nd pick of the 4th round, the Washington Football Franchise select....

Telvin Smith - LB - Florida State - ACC

ncf_u_telvin-smith_mb_576x324.jpg

I LOVE Telvin Smith. This team needs help at LB. He was easily the BPA on my board.

I project him to play inside in this defense and have a lot of responsibility for covering TE, RBs, Slot guys and occasionally coming after the passer.

The NFL is becoming more of a passing league so his size isn't so major a drawback. I lacked confidence in making the pick because of his size, kind of hoping he would be gone before I picked so I didn't have to make a decision on him.

However the trigger has been pulled and I'm happy for no other reason than now number19 has another Smith to be confused about.

Draft so far: Joyner FS, Turner OT, Smith LB

Daniel McCullers - DT - Tennessee - SEC

Saw this pick coming from a mile away. Never truly considered it, but toyed with the idea of taking him with SF just to see what you would do.

Now about McCullers, I've made my thoughts on him pretty clear on this board. Not a fan of his at all although I understand the infatuation and the clear logic behind the pick.

Turner is one of those guys who is under the radar because he wasn't scouted properly, because he wasn't expected to declare.

Now that is just mean spirited.

Haha, I love Telvin Smith. He fits with the new breed of defender that NFL teams will be looking for to combat the spread. Not sure about his every down fit inside in a 3-4, but he can't possibly be worse than Sharpton, who might be a starter in Washington this year.

With the 103rd pick in the NFL draft the Atlanta Falcons select...

Yawin Smallwood, ILB, Connecticut, AAC

Boasts long arms and impressive fluidity, allowing him to be just as effective in coverage as in supporting the run and attacking the passer. Good balance, agility and speed for the position. Smallwood was asked to cover wide receivers as well as running backs for the Huskies, demonstrating the versatility to intrigue 3-4 and 4-3 defensive coordinators, alike. One of the Best Players available here (IMO).

Smallwood was one of the other two LBs I was considering for my pick.

Didn't realise he had that much cover experience. Love that in a LB.

How much effect do you think Cush and Watt will have on the project guys?
I'd like to think they will make it happen, but sometimes guys just won't go for it.

5(105) Jacksonville Jaguars (The Pencil Neck) ON THE CLOCK: 1:00pm - 5:00pm

7(107) Oakland Raiders (Rock N Randy)
8(108) Minnesota Vikings (NCTexan)
9(109) Buffalo Bills (Blake)
10(110) St. Louis Rams (RT22)
11(111) Detroit Lions (steelbtexan)

Smallwood is fantastic in coverage, which is the main reason I considered him for my 3rd rounder with SF although I ended up going with Christian Jones.

The dude is getting a really bad rap (undeservedly IMO) for his combine performance. The guy pulled his freaking hamstring during his forty-yard dash, of course he ran slow.

With the 105th pick, the Jacksonville Jaggywires select:

Terrance West - RB - Towson - Colonial Athletic Association

He's solid and hard to tackle. He's light on his feet and finishes strong.

7(107) Oakland Raiders (Rock N Randy)

9(109) Buffalo Bills (Blake)
10(110) St. Louis Rams (RT22)
11(111) Detroit Lions (steelbtexan)

I'm here, I'm just trying to figure out what the hell to do now that my board is shredded. You all conspired against me getting a decent ILB!!!

I'm extremely glad you didn't! Daniel McCullers & Trai Turner were #2 and #3 on my list entering today. Having my top three guys go back-to-back-to-back right before Atlanta would have sucked..

Eh **** it, I'm sticking with my original plan. The Cleveland Browns select:

Jarvis Landry - WR - LSU - SEC

[IMGwidthsize=400]http://i.huffpost.com/gen/875567/thumbs/o-JARVIS-LANDRY-facebook.jpg[/IMG]

Highlights: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZiJ0EwNclSM

Going into this draft the Browns only had 1 reliable receiver in Josh Gordon, so I was planning on getting 2 more. I thought it would be pretty cool if I could get both LSU WRs, stick Beckham in the slot and Landry on the outside. The Browns signed Andrew Hawkins in the meantime, so that made me change course in the 3rd round, but I don't care any more. I'll pretend Hawkins doesn't exist, because he should have never been given that much money. Anyways, I think these two guys will make Blake Bortles' job a million times easier. Bortles is a much better QB now than Mettenberger will ever be, and these two WRs made Mett look good.

Browns draft so far:
1 - 4 - 4 - Cleveland Browns - Dutchrudder - Blake Bortles - QB - UCF - AAC
1 - 26 - 26 - Cleveland Browns - Dutchrudder - Odell Beckham Jr. - WR - LSU - SEC
2 - 3 - 35 - Cleveland Browns - Dutchrudder - Bradley Roby - CB - Ohio State - BIG 10
3 - 7 - 71 - Cleveland Browns - Dutchrudder - Carlos Hyde - RB - Ohio State - BIG 10
3 - 19 - 83 - Cleveland Browns - Dutchrudder - Dion Bailey - FS - USC - PAC 12
4 - 6 - 106 - Cleveland Browns - Dutchrudder - Jarvis Landry - WR - LSU - SEC

You can put me in this camp as well. I like a few guys still available over McCullers at this point but hey he fills a need. Not a bad pick at all considering our need for a mountain in The middle.

I would of went with Ellis or Currethers. To each his own.

But Hawkins does exist... lol

To each your own is right. I have McCullers rated higher than both. I said he was gonna be polarizing, I know people don't like him. But I am the Texans GM now and we are finally gonna build a winner.

Yeah. He's going to be solid, but not spectacular in my mind.

That's how I feel. Was a really big fan of his college game, but he just doesn't have the athleticism to translate to LT in the NFL and his run blocking and toughness are question marks. I see him as a swing tackle. I also think he's purely a ZBS guy.

Oakland Raiders select ....

Morgan Breslin, OLB, Southern California 6'3 275lbs
A tweeter but I think he will ind a home at OLB
He reminds me a lot of Cushing
Great hustle
Good motor and just gets after it
He is a little undersized for a DE so I think he will find a home at OLB at the next level

WolverineFan beat me to it...

While I'm here, I would like to remind everyone that I have this awesome Google Spreadsheet of our draft setup for folks to use. You can use the Draft1, Draft2, Draft3 sheet to sort the selections made by position, school, team, etc. This really helps in the late rounds when trying to figure out what positions to target, or to see who was taken.

Yep,

Hurst should make a fine RT in Monhinweg's ZBS scheme. Hurst should be healthy for next season and is somebody I hope BOB will be looking at in the 4th rd. I believe Hurst has the ability to gain strength and be a 10 yr starter at RT.

I don't worry about broken bones, (They heal) as much as ligament/nerve damage. This pick also stays true to my philosophy of drafting talented but injured players later in the draft.

Jets draft so far

1.Mike Evans
2.Marcus Roberson
3.Jackson Jeffcoat.
4. James Hurst

Thanks to ndevine7 and a 2nd rd group pick the Jets have filled many of their needs. A WR who is a much upgrade. A CB (Roberson) who is as talented as any CB in this draft. Underrated DE (Jeffcoat) pass rush specialist. and an OT (Hurst) that is an upgrade over Howard who was lost in FA. The Jets are very happy with how the mock draft has gone so far and are looking forward to the many comp picks that are coming shortly. With this draft the Jets may make the playoffs even with Vick at QB. (Saving Ryan's job)

Sorry guys I really did look numerous times
Knew it was to good to be true :/

For future reference: Right under the page count there is a link "Search this thread". Searching for "Scott Crichton" would have gotten you six results.

I'm talking about the fact he has no leg and no return date.

It doesn't matter though. I just found out that UNC's pro day is today. I will find out sometime pretty soon I imagine where his health status is at based on him being evaluated at his pro day.

Proxy pick for Blake via PM.

The Buffalo Bills select...

Will Clarke - DE - West Virginia - Big 12

Thanks. A prospect for Texans fans to keep an eye on as he could be used as a 3-4 DE as well. And Romeo got a good look at him during the Shrine Game.

Bills get a nice 4-3 DE for their rotation.
