Welcome to Houston Woody Marks

I don't see that. Westbrook was a dynamic punt returner before the Eagles realized he was too valuable to the offense to be on special teams. Marks can make guys miss, but not like a Westbrook or a Sproles. My comp would be former Texan Duke Johnson. Was never a lead back, but averaged around 800 scrimmage yards per season. Reliable 3rd down RB whose best seasons were in Cleveland.
Great comp IMHO.

Classic overpay?

Says who?
Say’s me and others who I will not throw under the bus. Look I’ve complained openly about PFF grades using their mock platform. Made it real hard to do realistic mock and not get a D or F grade. But somewhere in between is where I fall. 5th rd. Would be fair, mid 4th (where they drafted him is just ok) but giving up a third is an overpay. We’re going to argue until the sun comes up, been there done that. Only thing that makes this work, is he was drafted for this system to fill a gap on Texan roster.

I don't necessarily think that trading up for Henderson would have been an overpay. Dude's a difference maker. I'm really happy with the Texans draft.

I don’t either, but it is over valued according to trade value chart. Some teams are sticklers on that but not Nick, which is ok if there is conviction. But Chicago was also trying to trade up, one spot and only offering their pick plus a 7th.

Sproles LOL... Marks is more like James White than Sproles if we're just saying Marks is a pass catcher only.

Wasnt White a bigger back? I realize Sproles was a short dude and Marks is not that…but Sporles skillset was pass catcher. Ive only seen cutups of Marks to this point. Once i get a better look, maybe my Comp is 100% off. Appreciate your input.

Happy to oblige!! Marks is 5'10", 207, and White is/was 5'9", 204 (according to their combine pages).

Im hearing some buzz about JK Dobbins and the Texans. At this time…some smoke but no fire. If Dobbins signs here, that would put Marks squarely in the 3rd down role only.

Eh. Dobbins is frequently injured. He'd be good for half the season while Marks is warming up

I heard on S&L that Mixon was in a walking boot at OTAs. Last season Mixon was basically unavailable all training camp.

If we see a similar situation, that would make Dobbins this year’s Cam Akers to compete with Pierce for RB2. I am feeling deja vu… Nick is going to sign another RB with two achilles tears then flip him for a 6th round pick!

OTA's don't start until next week, Wednesday.

Dobbins was not only born in Houston, he owns a house in the Cypress area and is currently living in that home.

Dobbins is a fomrer 2nd rounder with size and speed, but not directly competing with Marks. He would be Mixon insurance and gobble up a lot of run downs if Mixon goes down or needs a breather.

I think Dobbins, if healthy, is better than Akers…who isn't half bad himself. Dobbins …again when healthy…is good enough to be “the guy”. I could see him wanting to stay close to home, and rehab not only his body but his reputation in league circles. This marraige would make a lot of sense, and its probably a classic NC one year deal… if it happens.

Marks is a 3rd down RB, unlike Dobbins who is not a threat in the passing game. LOL.

Dobbins played in 13 games last season. The most since his rookie year.

Right, but he still missed games. To say he stayed healthy is incorrect.

Dobbins had a career high in rushing yards and was 2nd in Comeback Player of the Year in 2024. Not the "has been" RB you attempted to portray.

Oh my bad, yes go with the second comment I made since you tried to poke holes in my first comment and failed (miserably I might add...)

Pretty much where I'm at.

We're putting a lot of eggs in the basket that assumes Mixon stays healthy or suddenly Pierce returns to 2022 Pierce in Nick Caley's system.

This pick really looks like the old Patriots building their RB rooms with a very clear RB3 pass catcher. The main difference though is the Patriots were always able to grab a platoon of other RBs who simply got the job done with the carries given even if they weren't star level talents. We've never really been able to do that.
Looks worse today

Not prioritizing the rb position and relying on a 29 yr old with a foot injury. The organization knew this before the draft, yet instead of drafting Mixon replacement, they drafted a compliment and signed a 30 yr old.
OK, I was thinking someone was injured.

I felt the same way during the draft. Everyone has a favorite, mine was Skattebo. I do remember back in the 2003 draft, when Casserly took Domanick Davis in the 4th round. My comment on that pick at the time was "Looks like Casserly has punted on the rest of the draft." I thought Davis was nothing more than a punt returner (though he was a good one at LSU). Turns out Davis only fielded 3 punts for the Texans. However, he did gain over 4400 scrimmage yards in 3 seasons. I'll give Nick the benefit of the doubt on this one.

Best RB Class in memory and all Nick came away with is a specialist (pass catcher) out of backfield despite incredibly thin, underwhelming RB room. Mixon is out. Pierce is out. Chubb looks done. Last year 6th rd. (practice squad in 2024) Jawhar Jordan is best in camp, followed by Woody Marks (cost 4th and next years 3rd). No way in hell I'm cutting Nick, Texans, and fellow TexansTalk.com membership, slack for not addressing backfield in such a rich RB draft class. Gentry/Hampton off the board, rest all were in play. Don't mind Woody Marks in 4th/5th rd. but after selecting a bell cow back in 2nd/3rd. TreVeyon Henderson was on the board when they selected Jayden Higgins. Both great prospects, but which need is greater? Nick talked to New England, but Patriots wouldn't budge, taking Henderson (some say Texans would have selected Ersery anyway, which they sure in the hell needed as well). Which drops RB into 3rd rd. prospects. Where Texans selected another WR, Jalen Noel (can't be too harsh with this pick as he was well worth it) but Kaleb Johnson was still on the board. Who is now going to be the Pittsburgh Steelers bell cow RB1. 4th rd. is where bulk of remaining good RB options including Woody and Cam Scattebo (who is looking like he will be their RB1 in camp).

In a normal RB class, Woody Marks in 4th rd. a good selection. Just given this class and Texans dire need to do a better job pounding the ball on the ground a huge missed opportunity. I pray for Mixon health to be a non-factor cause we really need him. Hope the young RB's can impact offense enough to not get CJ killed and from holding back playoff expectations. Then you better believe address the OL and backfield hard in 2026 draft in DC.

DJ Giddens from K-State was sitting right there and they punted. I really wanted Tuten when he was available

Perhaps the running game will not be utilized as much as many here are hoping?
Not "hoping". It's my understanding that Caley has said he'd like to establish a strong run game; and has also said he'll adapt to the strengths of the players. So it's more like having expectations based on these coaching interviews. Perhaps someone can find a link.

Tuten was intriguing. Focus should have been on RB1. I’m fine with either, but give us Tre’veon Henderson or Kaleb, then specialist and develop him in offense.

As far as the Higgins pick goes, I'm glad they were the picks. After watching the Texans in the playoffs the last 2 yrs not having a WR other than Nico that could get open having Kirk/Higgins and Noel rectified that situation. Plus having Nico/Higgins is really going to help in the RZ.

Jesus Christ SB, Jordan James as gidget back, we’re discussing RB1 (post Mixon).
They will be drafting RB1 next draft probably.

Mixon will be fine if players stop hip drop tackling him. I could see Caserio trading for a guy like Singletary late in camp.

I liked Tuten and B. Smith and a few others as well. I had Marks as more of a 5th/6th rounder as more of a pass catching specialist.

They must see something more than that in him, otherwise, they would have never given up next years 3rd...which BTW could be a great area to snag your next RB1 and that's now off the table.

It's not Marks fault...but if he's less than a HQ all-around backup at very worst...that's terrible value.

I was relatively intrigued by Jawhar Jordan last year, but he never was elevated. If he continues to show out in camp/games, he may force his way onto the roster. But is he the future RB1? Very doubtful. He's not built to take that kind of load imho.

So, I'm with BL - talking 2026 offseason, continue to build the o-line, and even if Mixon comes back and is mostly healthy, I'd look for a true RB1 next year in the draft.
