Welcome to Houston Woody Marks

Pearce has the vision of Stevie Wonder, but if he knows where the hole is and he doesn't have to read and react, I could see Pearce as a viable action to spell Mixon. The fact that they didn't draft an RB that is your prototype between the tackles RB tells you that they are still burning a candle for Pearce. I would love to see Pearce be a productive part of the RBs we have, but it would be silly for me to expect that.
He actually looked really good when he got his chance against the Titans last yr. One thing that hasn't been mentioned is Pierce needs to stay healthy, he's been injured a lot for a guy who hasn't played very much.

Injuries last yr had them playing Lassiter in the slot last yr and Ross playing outside after Petrie went down. Also when Ward went down they were thin at S. That really hurt this defense against Mahomes. This yr they're 2 deep across the board. Ward and Smith can play both nickle and S positions. What happened against the Chiefs last yr wont be happening next yr. (This is if they got the Smith eval correct and I trust Ryans when it comes to defensive evals.

The DB room was thin last yr, just like the WR room was thin last yr. Caserio/Ryans deemed those 2 positions just as important as the OL and more important than the RB room. Fortunately they added good players at all of these position who will provide the depth that the team was missing last yr.

I'm just glad that come playoffs time we will be seeing Higgins/Noel out there instead of Metchie/Hutch and on defense we wont be seeing Ross out there and will instead be seeing Darby/Smith and hopefully Ward will stay healthy since he will be playing less next yr.
Texans addressed secondary in free agency. Double dipping in draft to fix backfield RB position with new and better skill sets was a no brainer, not visa versa.

I had that recently. Took out some homemade stew for after my Bible group tonight. Going to have catfish and shrimp for lunch tomorrow.

They didn't consider signing Darby to be enough to fix the issues. So they double dipped at WR and CB to make sure that what's happened the last two years doesn't happen again this year. You may disagree with Caserio, Ryan's choices but they had a plan. Truth is they still believe in Pierce and think they only needed a 3rd down RB to fill out the RB room. Like I said, I liked Sampson, Smith and James more, but it's not like Marks is a bad player.

Would you still be complaining if they would have selected Smith or Tuten instead of Marks?

No, but why not complimentary RB (Sacttebo) with Marks? Bottom line I’m trying to make is lean into strength of draft @ RB when you only have one dude (Mixon) who is older.

His 10 yard split HH time was 1.50 which is very fast (Tank Dell was 1.49). His vision combined with that burst first 10 yards will allow him opportunities for big plays that are normally reserved for those classic “4.3” guys.
40 times are overrated for RBs. Timing, lateral quickness, contact balance. That's the meat and potatoes and green beans. These come into play before a RB ever gets a chance to break a 40 yard run. Now if a guy has all that, you have a Saquan Barkley. But the long speed is the dessert,

Must be just be me because no one is saying this, they are either showing blind loyalty to their current players or unable to scout this RB class past 1A. Should have double dipped, value & need was there. So what happens if Pierce is still Pierce? Mixon misses stretch of games, you expect Woods to turn into bell cow, backed up by Dare Ogunbowale?

Second thing this was down CB class, they reached for Jaylin Smith because he was one of last corners who fit their profile, in thin class for need. Last year was draft to double down after Kamari. This was exceptional RB class, Cam Scattebo in 4th rd. He reminds me, ironically of Arizona Cardinals RB James Conner. You could run out there during & post Mixon your long term backfield, instead of Pierce & Ogunbowale.

If you can even break a forty yard run then get tackled I’m onboard.

I think Marks is more complete RB than given credit during this draft process. Darby is 31 year old CB so get a younger CB was more priority, imo than a RB. running backs can be found all over the place especially if you a good scheme with quality run blocking (oops)

Interesting ratings for all rookie RB's

Woody Marks, Houston Texans

2025 projection: 105 carries, 457 yards, 3 TDs; 21 receptions, 157 yards, 1 TD
Drafted: Round 4, No. 116

Marks was a pass-catching star in college, posting 1,546 receiving yards on 317 targets over five seasons -- more than doubling the next-closest back in routes, targets and catches. On the other hand, he averaged south of 5.0 yards per carry over five seasons, and his career 2.4 yards after contact per carry is easily the worst in this class. Marks also underwhelmed across the board at the combine, including a 4.54 in the 40-yard dash. The 24-year-old will compete with Dare Ogunbowale and Dameon Pierce for No. 2 duties behind Joe Mixon in Houston.

Woody Marks also had 3,016 total rushing yards on 608 career carries for a 5.0 yards per carry average. This also included 31 career touchdowns. These game stats are pretty good when you consider how often he was weaponized as a receiver. He had 5 touchdowns via the air.

Working with Mixon might be exactly what the doctor ordered.

So far so good as far as some of the assessments go regarding rookie camp.

Not for the jack they gave up to go get him, combined with who they passed up. That output would be a disapoint, ent, especially on the passing side.

Dameon Pierce broke a 90 yard TD run from scrimmage last year and his recorded
Combine time was only 4.59 so Marks is probably fast enough, while his receiving skills
would appear to be elite among running backs.
Actually our guy might be as fast as top back pick Ashton Jeaty (spelling ?) , since there
doesn't seem to be any reported time for the BS back ? Who knows ?

Puff him up until he explodes.

Gave me mild relief to know Caserio tried to trade up with New England for (supposedly) TreVeon Henderson. Nick made his usual overpay to get his guy offer too but in the end The Patriots valued bell cow RB more.

Also explains why Caserio was went so aggressively after Woody Marks.

Marks has been compared to former Eagles RB Brian Westbrook by many and I remember
Westbrook well and yea the comp is very accurate.
I know I'm getting ahead of myself, but when do we get jersey #s assigned to the rookies ?
Among current players I see the 49ers Mcafferty as a legit comp.

I think the carries are going to be dependent on 2 things...how often the Texans have a lead late in games and if he is going to be the true #2 back. Last year Pierce, Akers, Ogunbowale and Taylor accounted for 120 carries.

If Mixon's carries are cut down some and he gets most of the carries that were split between those 4 backs I could see him getting there. Assuming health, I think he should at least be around the 70ish carry range.

The rooks have had their jersey numbers for a couple weeks now..

I thought of Darren Sproles. Sproles was shorter but he was mostly known as a damn good pass catcher out of the backfield.

Another more recent comp i thought of is Austin Eckler.

Marks is like bucky irving
According to Lance Zierlein, he’s Damion Pierce. Just reminder, how difficult it is to do player comps.

Dameon Pierce

Overview

Compact and willful, Irving is deeply committed to each run his play-caller trusts him with. He punches above his weight class with excellent contact balance and leg drive to fight through tackles and squeeze every yard out of the run. However, Irving showed a concerning lack of explosiveness at the NFL Scouting Combine. He is frequently in a rush and would rather run through a wall than around it but he does have the agility to make tacklers miss with wide, lateral cuts when he runs with better patience. Irving isn’t ready for NFL protection duties and is a little tight as a route runner, but he catches the ball cleanly. Irving is missing ideal size and explosiveness, which could land him somewhere in the middle rounds of the draft as an average backup.

I don't see that. Westbrook was a dynamic punt returner before the Eagles realized he was too valuable to the offense to be on special teams. Marks can make guys miss, but not like a Westbrook or a Sproles. My comp would be former Texan Duke Johnson. Was never a lead back, but averaged around 800 scrimmage yards per season. Reliable 3rd down RB whose best seasons were in Cleveland.

Classic overpay?

Says who?

I'll give him 80 carries and 50 catches.

130 touches, that's James White territory.
