Nick Caserio - New GM

I think if this team can save money anywhere it’s LB. DeMeco can develop LBs.

Granted, they paid for Azeez and he is paying off but I think they can groom his replacement on a rookie contract when it’s time.

I also really like the value they’ve found at DT. Foley/Settle/Edwards are performing better than Rankins/Collins at a fraction of the cost. How much of that is due to the presence of Hunter/Anderson? Don’t know but as long as you’ve got blue chip guys like Hunter/Anderson on the edges you can coax career years out of bargain bin DTs like they’ve done this season.

^This is Caserio's best, non-flashy move of the offseason. What was the biggest hole on the roster has been at the very least solid and at times a strength.

Remember all of the panic around these parts when they let Rankin's and Collins go.

Porky almost had an aneurysm form.

How are you going to pay everyone?

Stingley
Lassiter
Stroud
WAJr
Bullock
Harris
Etc.

Probably stop over paying players on the OL?

Start their extensions early versus letting the contracts play out until the final year.

Texans have assembled a pretty top notch defensive backfield of; Stingley Jr, Lassiter, Ward, Bullock, and Pitre. It wouldn’t hurt me one bit if they were to draft a big Safety at some point to add to this mix. A guy big and fast enough to neutralize TE’s in the middle of the field.

The cap went up this year 13.6 % and we could see $280 m in 2025.
Cutting Tytus Howard post June 2025 brings savings $14.2 million. Our fav LG Kenyon Green gone after 2025.

Consider the list you presented.

Stingley in 2025 gets a Nico type extension based on what we've seen from our GM. The big money not hitting until 2026 with proration beginning in 2025 of any bonus.
Rookies Bullock and Lassiter not in conversation until three more years.
Christian Harris is a huge question mark and may not even be with us in 2026. He could be similar to a linebacker we saw leaving free agency this past off season.
Lastly, our big boys. This is a very legitimate concern but I think we will be okay. Both are under contract through 2026 with a fifth year option for 2027.

High dollar Danielle Hunter will be mostly off the books in 2026 except for $4.2 million void money for 3 years.

Shaq Mason;
Dalton Schultz;
Al-Shaair;
Denico Autry; and
Joe Mixon gone after 2026.

My focus is on replacement for these plus adding other positions through drafts by 2027. Based on recent draft results, Nick and Demeco catching fire and we know where that's at.

(Kudos to Mamas and Papas].

I was a Heinish fan after his rookie season. But less so as time has passed. You'd think he would benefit as much as the mature DTs from the Blue Chips & the LB play we've been getting.

Seeing Schultz drop off after being paid worries me. I don’t want too many long-term contracts on the team. I fear it develops complaceny.

Agreed, at least the Mixon extension is looking good, along with shortening Diggs contract.

CJ was not the same QB. That's what pressure will do to a passer. Ask Mahomes what happened to him in Super Bowl LIX.
I think both are true...OL gave too much pressure and CJ not as sharp as 2023, but I can't do the percentage cause of the first (OL) to the effect (CJ). Just positive it is well short of 100%.

Looks like I have to follow links to the chron

The video was a clip from a Caserio interview on the NFL Network. Nothing in the video or links regarding the Texans picking up a former draft steal in free agency.

The video was interview with Caserio but not about FA. I included as from SBNation.
The FA article is behind Chronicle subscription. Many of the links I have to the Chronicle, you just hit X and it would allow you to read the article. This one does not. My apologies.

The author doesn't mention TE in his FA list. The Texans could bring back their TE room, but I think Nick Caley might want to eye a veteran.
They also interviewed almost all of the TE's at Sr. Bowl and Combine. I'm thinking that they will add a TE, maybe 1 in the draft and a cheap one in trade/FA.

Nick's come a long way from trading away picks for guys he'd cut a month later.
He's doing the same things he's always done.

Sometimes things workout sometimes they dont.

As fans we're lucky to have Caserio as the GM and yes, I've been critical of Caserio giving Howard that 5th yr option and then extending him, same with Mason. I'm not going to rag on him because he decided to trade down, get Diggs and missed out on a game changer like BTJ. His theory was sound but his luck was bad.

Also I'm not going to rag on him for the OL, although he should've insisted that Lovie/Warhop pick Linderbaum over Green. I wanted Jordan Davis so what do I know LOL.

Anyways Caserio has had a lot more hits than misses so I'm happy. With that said, he really needs to nail this draft to the tune of finding 2 difference makers and 2 solid starters. I've got faith in him because Ryans knows what he wants on the defensive side of the ball and with Caley/Schiplinski/Popovich all coming from the same system and thinking alike, Caserio is probably going to get difference makers on the offensive side of the ball. He's already off to a good start with the Kirk trade IMHO.

Eh...

There was that 2nd round picks he threw away on a 1 year overpriced rental.

Don't get me wrong. I loved the move at the time, but this one hurts.

Who are they cutting to add 2 TEs?

They’ll probably carry 3-4 for the season.

I think they’ll draft one but the only vets I can see added are camp competition types that would likely be cut.

I would cut Jordan or trade him. One of Hutch or Metchie would be traded or cut. If nothing else I would cut Green/Broeker etc... off of the OL to make room. Bottom line is the need TE's that can block and this is the TE class to get a TE that can be a long time starter/maybe even a star level player. Schultz sucks and Stover has a very limited ceiling. Who knows what they're going to get out of Jordan.

I am still okay with cutting or trading Dalton Schultz. I just don't see Nick Caley doing it. 9 million If released pre June. Harold Fannin is on my big board, if they allow him to play as he did last year. He blocks as well as Schultz.

1555 yards!

As I understand it, cutting Schultz is not happening this year based on cap implications, per JA@chron. And I don't see anyone trading for him either.

Caley needs to get 2023 out of him. If he does that, he can bring some value. I'd still like to draft a guy like Arroyo to push him this year, with potential to start next year.

We can trade round seven two years in the future to get someone to take Schultz.

I was hoping they could draft Loveland or Warren at 1-25.

But with the Tunsil trade, if they have to spend 1-25 and 2-58 to trade up for Banks they should do it. Maybe then draft Arroyo in rd 3.
