Week 10: Detroit Lions @ Houston Texans (Sunday Night Football and Battle Red Game)

Who you think winning?

Started the season thinking the Texans had the deepest WR room in the NFL. Now the top three might not play against the best looking team in the NFL!
The problem isn’t the receivers group. The issue is the offensive line and its protections/blocking. In the last game the receivers were getting open, unfortunately CJ didn’t have the time. Not only that, when he did have time, his internal clock was way off causing him to over throw his receivers.

We are not favored to win this game, and for good reason. I hope we avoid injury and show some level of improvement in our deficient areas (pass pro, offensive play calling, reduce big plays down the field on defense). Can we win? Sure. We have seen the best teams have an off week and the NFL is always full of surprises each week. I'm just tired of seeing the same exact problems every game. Just fix it.

And please have decent performance after halftime for once!

They gonna have to hope Schultz and Jordan are in good catching form along with Woods and Hutch.
They may also have to use Mixon more as a receiver in this one and let Pierce and Obungawali run it.
Jordan is on IR? Pierce is out

The problem I mentioned in my post you quoted is that all three of them are likely out tomorrow.

Jordan out for the year. Pierce is injured…again. It’s the same guys over and over. Gotta start moving on from guys who are clearly injury prone. That includes Nico. And BTW, Can Nick start ordering non-injury prone athletes? Is there a waiting list or can we pay someone off under the table?

This is IMO why you mortgage the farm if you have to, to protect him before you officially turn a QB into a Carr.

Are they injury prone or just not allowed to heal before being stuck on the field again?

Admittedly, I am not optimistic at all about this one - our receiving Corp is decimated.

And the defense also needs to ball out again.
Even if this goes favourably for the Texans, this is gonna be a tough go.
Personally, I’m a big advocate for utilizing Dare as a receiving threat out of the backfield. In the Buffalo and Jacksonville games, he was highly effective in this role, catching 10 of 11 targets for a total of 104 yards. However, since the Buffalo game, his opportunities as a pass-catcher have been limited. With his proven ability, I believe he could make a real impact in this game if Slowik incorporates him more as a receiving option out of the backfield. Let’s hope we get to see that potential unfold!

Juice Scruggs moves to left guard, and Jarrett Patterson will play center. With Juice not being able to hold blocks at center, LG is not something I believe he will do well at.
Hopefully Patterson can communicate the protections better than Scruggs and Scruggs can play better than Kenyon Green at LG.

It may or may not be great OL play but let’s hope it’s an improvement.

But see this is the thing. How do we know there was an issue with Scruggs communicating the protections? Scruggs moving over to guard might be only b/c he played there last year & did well and he has experience Whereas Patterson has none on any level at guard.

He did fine last season.
I wouldn't consider giving up 4 sacks in the 5 games he started after missing 10 games for a hamstring last season doing fine.

And this season, he has harbored groin and hip issues throughout, although not missing games and not really reported. This has led to him not being able to hold defenders back.

Collins… is now officially ACTIVATED! Still listed as questionable for tomorrow though.
He was activated yesterday. He has had 1 limited practice on Fri..........basically a walk-thru day. Playing him on Sunday, for the reasons I've posted previously in the Injury thread, I believe is ill-advised.

Probably going to need running backs to block for Stroud.

No sir. He was activated -today-. Yesterday was something else saying the team had 21 days to activate him.

As a 5th Year Center at Notre dame, playing at left guard as starter for almost 750 offensive snaps, Patterson allowed one quarterback hit and no sacks to go with his zero sacks his college career.

Brian Branch picked up a pair of fines for Sunday
Published November 9, 2024 07:01 PM

The league ejected Lions safety Brian Branch for an illegal hit during Sunday’s game against the Packers. On his way to the locker room, Branch sent a two-fisted, middle-fingered salute to the crowd.
Branch received a fine for both acts.

The fines matched. It was $10,128 for the illegal hit, and another $10,128 for the double-barreled gesture.

It’s odd that a safety rule would trigger the same fine as a rule against the making of certain gestures. Regardless, Branch will be out $20,256. Pending appeal.

He’ll be back on Sunday night, as the Lions face the Texans in Houston on NBC and Peacock.

Another case of the refs obviously getting it wrong...............then covering it up.

Grover Stewart wasn’t fined for blow to the head of Sam Darnold
By Mike Florio
Published November 9, 2024 06:43 PM

On Sunday night, Colts defensive lineman Grover Stewart obliterated Vikings offensive lineman Garrett Bradbury before forcing quarterback Sam Darnold to fumble.

Along the way, Stewart applied a forcible blow to Darnold’s head and neck area.

Referee Shawn Smith threw a flag. Then, magically, the flag was picked up. Since Smith (like all white-hat wearing referees) has primary jurisdiction over hits on the quarterback, someone had to change his mind.

It seemed that Smith (who said he initially thought it was a face mask foul) got the word from the pipeline to 345 Park Avenue that the flag should be picked up, that the blow to the head wasn’t forcible. (NBC rules analyst Terry McAulay said on the broadcast that it looked forcible.)

Coincidentally (or not), the league office has decided not to fine Stewart.

A fine would have represented an admission that the call was wrong. But it was wrong. Forcible is as forcible looks. Darnold took a forcible blow to the head.

Stewart should have been flagged. He should have been fined. And if the league office is going to direct officials to pick flags up or put flags down in violation of the rules allowing such things to happen, it’s important to, you know, get it right.
In the case of Stewart hitting Darnold forcibly in the head and neck area, the league got it wrong. The failure to fine him could be regarded by reasonable minds as an effort to circle the wagons on the blown call.

IOW the refs suck!

we win vs DET, we lose next week vs DAL

how many penalties does the OL rack up this week?

Dallas, Jags, Titans x 2 should all be wins. Miami is a flip. If we lose to Ravens, Detroit, KC it just says we are not ready for the big boys and in tier 2.
That's very optimisric and It could in fact go that way but on the other extreme the Titans game here is the only victory of those games we could realize.
I just have a bad feeling we might be trending in the wrong direction, however tonights game
could tell us a lot.

I agree with this statement overall. I wouldn't be surprised to see us dropping a game we are favored to win. Hopefully we show some improvement tonight. However, we must have a good game and win against one of the top opponents on this list (Det, KC, Bal) to even be considered to make any type of run. At home against Detroit tonight will be interesting to say the least.

.
The Texans will be favored in the games vs the Jags, Cowboys, Phins, and both games vs the Titans. they may not win all of those games, but it's not being very optimistic thinking they will. And it's certainly not out of the realm of possibilities that the Texans come up with a win in any of the other remaining games.
I would be xtremely pleased if our guys were somehow able to win all of those games which would then of course give us 11 wins this year which would exceed my own most optimistic expectations of 10 wins for the 2024 regular season.
I think the Lions have the best roster, though not the best team, in the NFL today so this will likely be the biggest challenge of the Demeco Ryans era to date. IMO It's all gonna come down to how our OL handles the Lions front 7 tonight if we are to have
any chance.

Houston still also has a 2 game lead in the South with the Vikings win last night so that's huge. Colts will be facing Buffalo.
I think we essentially have a 3 game lead in the division via the tie breaker with Indy as we won both games....as long as Indy holds 2nd place.

I’m expecting us to look a lot worse tonight against the Lions than we did against the Vikings. I hope we win, but it’s highly unlikely.

I wonder why Patterson was first off the bench when Kenyon went down.

You're right, we don't know Scruggs struggled calling protection or consistently snapping the ball. But we know there were issues.

I really wonder why Kendrick Green hasn’t been given more of an opportunity. He had his issues against Quinnen Williams (who doesn’t?) but he has provided the best LG play we’ve seen this season in his limited snaps.

Not all the time. That’s the problem with the scheme. The qb isn’t asked to do so much. Brady’s, Mahomes and the great QBs would pick a blitzing cb apart because they can recognize it and audible or give a hot route in the play. Do you see where I’m going here.
Right or wrong. Supposedly, in the Shanahan/Kubiak offense there are answers built into the plays for the QB. As a result, the need for audibles are minimized.

Using your example. If the QB recognizes a blitzing CB, there is not a need to audible because there should be a route within the called play that accounts for when a CB is blitzing. The QB has to make that route his first read. So, it's more about philosophy/scheme than not trusting the QB to make an audible or the QB's capabilities.

So many teams are now running this offense. I wonder if defenses are starting to catchup to them by disguising their pre-snap reads and having the QBs question where to go for that hot read. I also wonder about when the offense is too slow in getting to the LOS or even getting the plays into the QB, if that also limits the ability for the QB to find the answers. Too often, as the play clock is expiring, Stroud is clapping and rushing to get the ball snapped.

When Goff was with the Rams, they would get to the LOS as quick as possible and after getting a look at the defense, McVay would make the play call. I'm not sure if the NFL changed the rule or defenses finally adjusted and are not showing the defensive look until the QB's headset is turned off. If I had to guess. I think it's more about the arrogance/confidence of the HC/OC who thinks the design of their plays can address anything the defense throws at them and trusting their QB to make the right read without using an audible.

Sean McVay, Jared Goff refute idea that Rams are cheating with headset usage
