Deion Sanders suggests “ramification” regarding report critical of Colorado program
Published August 9, 2024 12:27 PM

As Pro Football Hall of Famer Deion Sanders prepares for his second season as head coach at Colorado, a sharply critical report regarding his program has emerged.

Last Friday, Steve Corder of AthlonSports.com published an item under this title: “Deion Sanders chaotic culture turns into locker room violence in Colorado.”

The article includes quotes from players who have left the university.

“It’s like a real-life Grand Theft Auto video game,” one former player reportedly told Corder. “There are many distractions with fights, guns, and money floating around. The environment is unlike any I’ve come from before.”

The report from AthlonSports.com includes allegations of bullying and violence and fighting over a gambling debt and a “gun culture.”

Via Brendon Kleen of AwfulAnnouncing.com, Sanders has threatened a “ramification” regarding the report.

Corder appeared earlier this week on Dan LeBatard’s show to discuss the report.

“I just know I’ve talked to these kids, these young men,” Corder told LeBatard. “They’re scared, they’re worried about repercussions. I’m just doing what I think is what’s right, what needs to be done. If this was going on anywhere, I would think that anybody would want to know about it. Whether it’s the university, it’s the state, whether it’s the players, families, whatever that may be.”

Is Corder or Athlon concerned about legal action?

“There’s no reason to worry,” Corder said. “I vetted my sources. I checked, I double-checked. I have multiple people that I trust. Once you talk to more than two, three, four people, I have to go with my gut and I believe these guys.”

Believing his sources is one thing. Getting sued and having to defend himself in court against a defamation lawsuit backed by a deep-pocketed institution like Colorado and fronted by a charismatic and compelling coach like Deion is another.

Frankly, the mere existence of the report is a triple-dog dare to Colorado and Sanders. If it’s not true, sue. If you don’t sue, maybe it’s true.

That would probably be a pretty hard case to win if you're Colorado. I'm guessing they'd go the defamation route and Colorado has some pretty strong anti-SLAPP laws to my knowledge.

Edit: Even if they did file I'd expect it getting dismissed early even just having a quick look at their laws.

It's all about football.
It's pretty much about revenue. And the Coogs haven't been able to bring in enough sponser $$$.
The department is also in a crunch when it comes to generating revenues and remains highly subsidized by both the university and student fees. According to the most recent data available from Sportico, it has the smallest operating budget of any school in the so-called Power 4 conferences.

Well, they aren't the worst football team in the Power 4. Just the worst at generating revenue. Ticket money only goes so far. We'll see what the new AD can do. Just like we'll see what the new football HC can do.
Wut? Remind me of the Cougars record last year...

4-8

Yes, 2023 was not a banner year for the football program. The Coogs went to a bowl game 8 of the previous 9 seasons. The football record from 2023 is not the reason the UH lacks in revenue or why the AD was fired.
Why was the AD fired? Seems like you would included in your response?

There are times when I don't think you actually read my posts. Sponsorships. NIL $$$. Booster donations. These numbers are below what other schools are generating. So, bring in a new guy to see if he can get more $$$ into the athletic program. The old AD was fired because he failed at this aspect of the job. The new AD was hired in the believe he can succeed at raising revenue.

Does anyone know why the AD was fired? Can’t find it anywhere

I read your post but sometimes you just go around in circles. To me it is obvious that the AD was fired because of the monies. Dropping from winning records to 4-8 doesn't help. You said it wasn't about the record. I think it is.

Steve McNair will always be one of my favorite all-time players. The guy was a throwback that could have played in any era.

Edit: I don't know if anyone watched the McNair murder documentary on Netflix. No one deserves to die from having affairs. But you're taking chances when you consort with people you don't really know. Never a fan of Jeff Fisher. But he looks like he's never gotten over McNair's death.

I really enjoyed watching him play as well. It was just a tragic story all around. He came to one of my football practices when I was a kid and I got to take a picture with him that I still have.

Arch Manning looked pretty good today in mop up duty for the Longhorns, completing 5-6 for 95 yards and a TD. He also had a rushing TD.
