2024 Free Agency

This Defense is still incomplete. We have maybe $15MM in the kitty, and can probably pull out an additional $10MM of capspace through restructuring/releasing. We still need a starting DT, a starting CB and an additional back up DE (Dylan Horton may never get back to playing shape). With that $25MM capspace, I would bring back Sheldon Rankin or Arik Armstead, get the best CB you can get cheap (maybe Steve Nelson or Xavien Howard), and Derek Barnett.

Then you can go into the draft without being backed into a corner as far as positional need, and chose or trade for the best WR/CB/LB/RB/DT/DE depending on what comes to you at 23/59 and 87.

Cutting Woods will get you to 30 mil. Cutting Ward would save another 5 mil or o. I'm guessing, I didn't look it up.

Hopefully Caserio is able to do this, Sign Armstead to 12 mil APY. Spend 6 mil on S Whitehead and draft a CB and WR in the 1st two rds of the draft.

I see them having covered all bases already. I think they back themselves to get Steven Nelson level production from Okudah, Autry is that DT AND the backup DE, another comes in somewhere, they are already free to do what they think is best in the draft, with those bases covered elsewhere. I don’t think they are done yet but I also don’t think they are short of a starter they think they can get by with anywhere in particular.

I guess I didn't make it clear Thomas is my guy, followed by Mitchell, DeJohn, Payton Wilson (Who I have as a top 20 pick) but hope he falls to the 2nd because of his injury history.

I like Thomas too, but I am enthralled with the idea of Collins and 6'6" Mitchell on the outside, with Tank in the slot, and Schultz at TE. I think the combination of size and speed would be brutal on opposing teams. (I just have slight concern about Mitchell because he didn't produce as much as he should have- I suspect it was mostly due to the mediocre QB play in Texas).

@steelbtexan I know we aren’t the only ones but it feels good to get the guy some of us earmarked months ago. I didn’t foresee the cap spike but he shattered the 4/70 number I had on him. He also had a career year so should maybe allow myself the grace but it doesn’t matter - we got him.
Grace, no grace needed.

I would be happy rolling out with todays team and an added WR. A fast DL also means LJ wont be running wild on the Texans defense if they meet in the playoffs again.

Adding a S/CB/WR shouldn't be too hard to do with 25-30 mil in cap space and draft picks.

Are we still dogging on Caserio this evening?

I'll be the 1st to eat crow.

More Caserio bullishness from me: It is going to be incredible to watch the 2024 version of this team and contrast it to the team that finished the 2022 season... I don't think an NFL organization has ever reversed course more quickly than the Texans have in the past 15 months. Truly remarkable.

Beautiful! I didn’t think he would nail Hunter, but way to go Nick. Finally a true impact signing.

Hunter > Grenard especially when health is considered

Al-Shaair <> Blake. I think Blake is better in coverage, but I think DeMeco wants to stop the run to setup his pass rushers on 3rd down

Trading Punters is a wash

Autry > Rankins but age is a worry. But I do like Autry. I consider this a moderate upgrade

Mixon > Singletary - Mixon isn’t elite, but he does do everything pretty well and is a 3 down back. I’d love to sign Mattison as his back up, and then I’d draft a guy very late or just go with a UDFA to compete.

Okuda < Nelson - advantage on age, but Nelson is a much better CB

Give me a lower end WR and a safety in FA and we’ll be in great shape heading into the draft.

As far as the draft, I’d put money on corner or WR, and to me…more likely a corner. That will help with the Nelson loss. Okuda likely starts as the kid works his way in. Give me Wiggins. He can fly. I see a really deep WR class and think they see Nico and Tank as ballers from the 3rd round…so they strike again in the 3rd for their WR.

I'm hoping a guy like DeJohn falls to 1-23, because he can play either CB or S.

Hard pass on Mattison. He was not very impactful last year. I watched a few of his games. He had nothing.

Aubry is really a DE that can rush from the interior. If you are counting on him stuffing the run on a day in, day out basis, he will not be effective. You need someone with at least 300lbs to hold their ground at the DT position, Aubry doesn't have that much lead in hs ass. I see Aubry as an upgraded Jerry Hughes.

Along with Aubry, we still need a 2nd reserve DE (injuries absolutely happen as we saw last year), that should be Barnett.

Okudah is a gamble, he was not good for the Lions, and was mediocre for the Falcons. Okudah is maybe somebody that was actually worth the 3rd pick in the 2020 draft, but I would not go into next season counting on him carrying the starting CB load. I would absolutely have someone that is a proven starting CB on the roster before free agency ends.

The goal for the Texans in my view is to go into the draft without a desperate need at any one position. Without a starting DT or CB on the roster, we will be in a desperate position as far as to what position we will be drafting for.

I’m leaning towards CB in round 1 and then grab a WR round 2. This WR class is so deep, I think we will find value on the second day.

Give me Roman Wilson, Ricky Pearsall, Ja’Lynn Polk (all rd2), or Jalen McMillan (rd3).
Love Pearsall, Mc Millan and Polk. Wilson will be long gone before #59.
Polk made a spectacular catch at the combine.

I'm thinking like this, draft Thomas or A.D. Mitchellat 1-23 and then trade 2-59 and a future 1st to get back into the 1st for a CB. De John is my favorite if Q. Mitchell isn't there.

We are thinking similarly... Frankly, I would love to see us trade down into the early 2nd or end of 1st and get our preference of the CBs,WRs,OTs there... Then, I would also like to trade our 2025 1st for a 2nd... That gives us a couple 2nds to work with after our 1st pick and also ammunition with multiple picks in the 3rd and 4th (from earlier trade down) to come away with a very good WR, and then an OL/or RB of our choice: CB , WR, OL, RB all fully addressed before day 3 of the draft.

The Caserio signings have been solid. The defense is going to be tough next season.

My biggest concern on offense…..Howard is still injured with no real knowledge if he’s going to be ready to start this season and Fant hasn’t been re-signed. I believe Caserio mentioned that the OL would have to get better so I’m hoping RT- Tyler Guyton (OK) is the man at the top of his list to ensure someone will be on the roster that could start if Howard isn’t ready.

Got to keep the Franchise QB healthy, and I like Guyton better than a few of the OT’s that could be picked before him…..if he’s still on the board at 23.

You're probably right about CB in the first as we have in the receiver room - Collins, Dell, Brown, Woods, Hutchinson and Metchie.
Definitely need an upgrade at Corner - yeah can be a lottery, but I bet DR has been going through this class with a fine tooth nit comb.

That would depend on what Edge rusher or DT is on the board...Im almost certain we a go defense in 1st. B. Murphy if on board or top edge rusher to pair with WA Jr...D. Robinson or C. Robinson...especially if they dont land a top DE in FA. Then I suspect WR in 2nd...then 3rd gets interesting since we didnt land one of the elite backs in FA.
Yeah I stepped away from the message board for supper come back and respond to some messages and then realize that we got Danielle Hunter! I guess I need to get away from The Message Board more frequently.

Regarding the cap, the Texans can continue to spend on free agents without needing to make moves now. They only need to be under the cap limit by $1.00... Their cap situation is very clean, and as some have said, they can cut guys to create more space as they see fit... They probably want to be $10 million or so under the cap around draft time so they can sign draft picks and then have $5 million or more left over to use as needed during the season and roll over what isn't spent.

Among potential cuts:
Davis Mills would net $3 million
jimmy Ward would net about $4 million
Robert Woods about $5 million

Also, the bottom 20 players on the roster, signed for 2024, each have contracts without guarantees worth about $1 million... So, each free agent that is signed, you can take their 2024 cap hit and automatically subtract $1 million from it to get the actual impact to the team's cap room. I hope that makes sense: a player signed for $3 million will bump a player signed for $1 million off the roster, which will mean the actual hit to the cap is $2 million

I never thought about attacking the draft like this.

I like it.
