2024 Free Agency

I would be absolutely fine with 4/120 for Hunter. Him and Anderson rushing the edges every snap would be so much fun to watch.
With Autry and Collins inside.

I could see Caserio also adding Armstead to the mix.

Edge- Hunter/WA/Autry/Sanders/ Hopefully Barnett

DT's- Collins/Futasi/Iowa dude/Armstead/Hinish

LB's Harris/Al Shaair/Wilson at 2-59

CB's Stingley/Odukah/King/Petrie/DeJohn at 1-23

S Ward/Petrie/Houston-Carson/Murray/FA signing hopefully a guy like Whitehead or Simmons

That's a solid defense.

Trade back ino rd 2 for one of McConkey/Franklin/Pearsall and

Rd.4 Guerro

Lets roll

If you can get Hunter signed till the end of WAj and CJ’s rookie deals then the money is kind of unimportant, you have near QB money available to pay to an over the top player like that, and you have to see the Anderson rookie contract money plus the Hunter contract money as one in terms of your cap hit, and you’d better hope you are happy signing Anderson to that contract in 4 years time and replacing Hunter with a high draft rookie. The only other thing I’d ask Nick for is to find a way to get that deep center fielder signed up alongside Pitre as well, that gives me confidence that the D is improved even before draft night, and confidence that the O remains pretty stable with room to improve through experience and rookie additions.
Sign Whitehead and draft DeJohn/ hope Ward can have a healthier season.

yes and I also recommended trading Howard post June 1st. There are several ways to add to the cap but so far Nick is doing just fine.
If only some team would take the albatross contract that's Howard off Caserio's hands.

Obviously DeMeco feels differently than you and valued/offered more for Shaair because that’s his guy, regardless how you rate him as a top 10 LB. I absolutely love this move. If not was willing to spend a 2nd rd pick on Texas A&M LB Edgerrin Cooper. Now Texans can address WR in that slot and add legit weapon for CJ. What’s the cost of that domino affect, will be on full display next season.
Exactly

But if Thomas is there at 1-23 (doubtful) he should be the pick.

That would depend on what Edge rusher or DT is on the board...Im almost certain we a go defense in 1st. B. Murphy if on board or top edge rusher to pair with WA Jr...D. Robinson or C. Robinson...especially if they dont land a top DE in FA. Then I suspect WR in 2nd...then 3rd gets interesting since we didnt land one of the elite backs in FA.

Fair, yeah Nick Bosa is a different animal... and to think that leading up to the draft in 2019 I was ridiculed for saying that Nick would be better than his brother
They're both great players, Joey has struggled with health. Flukey injuries.

Depends on if you see Thomas like I do, I see Thomas/Nabers as a future Chase/Jefferson type duo. In fact I could see a world where Thomas is a better pro than Nabers.

Not sure who all is accounted for in that number, but they did spend some today:
~6m for Mixon
2.5m for Phillips
4m? for Noah Brown
3m for Townsend

At least I think it's missing those guys. Should have 35m+ to work with though.
Overthecap.com, with today update, with 62 contracts, has remaining "effective" cap space at $37M+. This takes into account projected rookie contracts.

If the news of landing Hunter is true then 1st round drastically changes...2 yr/ 48mil is a bit short for me...wish it was longer and kept around 24k/yr range
I still hope they draft Mitchell or DeJohn at 1-23. Wiggins is as talented as any CB in this draft. Too bad the Clemson stench has rubbed off on him. Runs a 4.35 at the combine bows out with a supposed injury.

My observation is that at this point the defense looks incomplete, easier to run against, and as long as they stay away from Stingley (if he's healthy) the offenses the Texans will be facing in 2024 should be able to consistently score more points than we can reasonably expect the Texans offense to produce. Lest we forget, the Texans schedule is much tougher this season than last.

Pick it up, Caserio. Get that defense some help.

NVM...lol

Thought u wanted Thomas at 1-23? Now that we have bookend DE's whats your prediction for draft?

Caserio doesn't seem to like signing FAs to long term contracts. I would've preferred 4 years/96 mil. Just have to see what the guaranteed $$ looks like. That would make Hunter 32 when the contract is up, He doesn't have a bad injury history and the Texans top 2 players are on rookie contracts. 9jk

I think it's just as much the players wanting shorter term with high guarantees. They see how fast the cap is rising also

Hunter’s deal is $5m APY short of the $30m he was hoping for, he will want to renegotiate asap and will see us as a great opportunity to raise his market higher in a front 4 that it’s going to be hard to pick where to double team.

Hunter, 29, produced arguably the best season of his career in 2023 in defensive coordinator Brian Flores' scheme. He finished with 16.5 sacks and 1,006 snaps, both the highest figures of his career. He also earned consistent plaudits from Flores for his ability and willingness to set the edge in the Vikings' run defense, and along the way led the NFL with 23 tackles for loss.

Or he could love playing for Demeco and the Texans and take a somewhat hometown discount for playing at home, for a great coach, and a young and up and coming team....I can dream right?!?!

I guess I didn't make it clear Thomas is my guy, followed by Mitchell, DeJohn, Payton Wilson (Who I have as a top 20 pick) but hope he falls to the 2nd because of his injury history.

Or a top CB... both WR and CB positions deep

If we don't add a matchup problem at WR in free agency (Ridley, M.Brown), I would be shocked if the Texans don't draft a WR before their current 2nd round pick selection... In other words, they will take a WR 1st, trade down and take a WR early in the second... or, if they take a CB or OT at 23, they will have a plan to trade up into the early 2nd to grab a WR.

Everything I am seeing about how Casserio has approached free agency is indicating he loves the WR class in the draft: that's why we hear due diligence done with gamebreaking RBs (but not WRs). Clearly, the plan was to spend on defense in FA. It was clear to everyone that the offense was limited against good defenses because of the lack of gamebreaking speed on offense... CJ Stroud's exact same WR/TE core is signed for next season. Adding someone like (Mitchell, Worthy, Thomas, etc...) will make the offense more dynamic, which I know everyone in the organization wants to do so they can get more from the franchise QB.

This DLine is gonna be SALTY!
Stingley may have a shot at lots of picks with that front

This Defense is still incomplete. We have maybe $15MM in the kitty, and can probably pull out an additional $10MM of capspace through restructuring/releasing. We still need a starting DT, a starting CB and an additional back up DE (Dylan Horton may never get back to playing shape). With that $25MM capspace, I would bring back Sheldon Rankin or Arik Armstead, get the best CB you can get cheap (maybe Steve Nelson or Xavien Howard), and Derek Barnett.

Then you can go into the draft without being backed into a corner as far as positional need, and chose or trade for the best WR/CB/LB/RB/DT/DE depending on what comes to you at 23/59 and 87.
