Texans Player Transaction DISCUSSION Thread

The Best Texans fans can hope for now is to sign Henry on the cheap, bring in Al Shaair and one or two of the FA safeties. Then have a great draft.

As of right now Murphy/Sweat have to be very high on their boards. Hopefully they bring back Barnett and Autry keeps playing at his current level or better. They aren't in terrible shape. But the 1st day of FA has been very underwhelming. No difference makers. Caserio has put himself in a spot where he needs to nail the draft again.
The 1st day of free agency is always what the fans want. Go see who was signed on the 1st day last year. The lb from Buffalo went to chicago, how did that work out. What about Hargrave from Philly to SF? How did that work out. I could go on and on. There are 3 levels of free agency. This is the 1st stage, then guys are going to get cut from teams the new guys signed and post draft guys gonna get cut.

Yeah, sure, it's day 1, and we seem to always have to be making these excuses playing this game, but the Texans have lost a starting RB, starting DE, starting LB and a punter and picked up a couple of special teamers and an aging starting DL.

A lot still out there, sure, and I get not wanting to overpay in the 1st wave, blah, blah, blah, it's just that on top of the needs you already had, you've now got more needs to address. We'll just build in the draft? OK, well, not every draft is going to be like last year's. The draft is still a crapshoot.

We'll see how it plays out like we always do. It's just a very underwhelming 1st day is all.
TBF, Greenard had one more sack than Autry and our new punter appears better. Perryman replaced by healthier ILB who can't cover either but still a plus move.
My plan has always to get a wide receiver and a cornerback and a running back in the draft. That still on the table. Noah Brown could have his healthy year and a breakout season like Nico Collins did. I have yet to see his contract but I'm assuming it was insignificant.

Besides, what’s the point of being in a position of having a ton of cap space if you’re not going to spend it on some playmakers/quality starters and spend it on depth instead?

Spend it on quality depth. It’s an 18 game season. You know as much as anyone else the amount of injuries that take place. And on more than one occasion we lost games that injuries had a major impact. ‘Next man up’ doesn’t account for much if the depth comes from the practice squad instead of smart signings. Case in point, the receiver room. Just think of much more effective Stroud could be if all of his receivers could separate.

Tell me why the Texans have never been 1st day player, except the yr they signed Joseph and Manning in FA, which happened to lead to the best 4 yr stretch in Texans history. Thanks Son of Bum.

that was them taking a shot once they realized they were in the window offensively. they were already operating at peak with Schaub, AJ and Foster by the time those guys came along.

Despite how we finished last season, we were still a slightly below average defense. Still too many holes and u can’t fill them all in the 1st day of FA. Offensively we still have challenges as well.

I like the Autry/ Al Shaair signings

Rumored to be next up are Mixon and possibly Boyd. I'm hoping they bring Hunter home and draft Sweat.

So we go from 3 wins to 10 in 1 season and you don’t think we can handle a 1st place schedule in season 2? I wouldn’t call that progress if that’s the case. I think the burning cash thing is a little overblown anyway. The cap goes up every year and teams find ways to make it work regardless. Besides, what’s the point of being in a position of having a ton of cap space if you’re not going to spend it on some playmakers/quality starters and spend it on depth instead?

Not what I'm saying. I'm saying that the guys who scraped talent off the bottom of other teams shoes last season and found some great players want to do it one more year and use that money saved to lock in a few guys like Collins, who will cost big bucks if he has another season like he did in 2023. They're not throwing money at people and instead just making decent offers. Maybe they don't like the guys who we like? At least not at the price they'll cost. Lets see what they come up with before getting upset about it. I was frustrated last season when it looked like they were bringing in the same kind of 1-year-contract bunch of guys and then these suddenly started coming together. Maybe that happens again?

I think the tougher schedule will be good for them and I still expect them to win the AFC South against it. I like that they took a stab at some guys but didn't go nuts on the offers. I think more than money there's a belief here among us fans that people will just come running to play with Stroud & Co. for DeMeco. One season is just one season, great as it may have been. I think in 2025 someone like Barkley (for example) does come here to play if we're two years into this and still looking like there's magic happening.

I'm somewhat concerned about his injury history......not the most durable. Had to dig pretty hard to find his true history. He's had 2 shoulder labrum surgeries, surgery for an ACL/MCL, later meniscus and articular cartilage surgery, MCL tear ending his 2023 season.........he even underwent an early Tommy John surgery with more recent elbow issues.

He's not the biggest player. The question is how long will his body last this season and beyond?

Always gotta rain on my parade CnD..lol

Alot of other things happened that year that were just as crucial, if not more, than signing Jjo & Manning, like Wade Phillips & Jj Watt.

To ease your concerns just remember that with the exception of bona fide dual threat backs like C.McCaffery RBs for the most part are a dime a dozen.
Mixon is a dual threat - he had 52 receptions last year. His receiving skills are top notch. MJD just mentioned on NFL Total Access that he could be a 1k yard rushing and 1k yard receiving guy in our system. And his contract is only $5.7M.
I still expect to draft a RB though.

I think Caserio is making his best effort. This is his first rodeo in wide open free agency. Proof will be in the pudding this fall.

Correct. I cannot criticize until I see the players perform. Who would've thought Blake Cashman would be such a difference maker when he was signed? Or Steven Nelson?

Caserio has no choice but to value shop because this team is still in a rebuild. There are a lot of needs.

It seems that Mixon recently had another off-field issue which may be a factor in Cinci moving on from him ?

Okay why?
Well, I'm not down on the trade, just not excited. Something pointed out since my post, which is encouraging, is that he's good at pass blocking; so I checked. Last year his efficiency at pass blocking was 93%; giving up 1 sack, 3 hits and 4 pressures. But rushing the ball, he was slightly not as good as Singletary, with an average of only 4.0 ypa. Singletary was 4.1.Career he's only 4.1 with Singletary 4.5. Just nothing to be excited about. His 7.2 ypr is a slight upgrade over Singletary's 6.4, but again, nothing to get excited over.

Did you compare touchdowns receiving?
Edit missed it in your post.

TBF it was obvious at least to me that Lucky was referring to Nick's time in Houston .
I guess...but thats not fair at all when you think about it...why discredit all the other years he's been a GM and has gone thru this process...there is a reason the McNairs went after him from NE and got charged w/ tampering...its because he's done the job.

NC wasn't GM in NE... BB was

What you should get excited about is he's a good short yardage back.

Perhaps it is just me, but I am interested in management and players during their time here. Of course, we have to be aware of History but I'm interested in what they do for me today and tomorrow not yesterday so much.

If you include the category of women, we actually get a triple threat RB........
