2024 Free Agency

Awesome! I bet this guy may be able to kick the ball hard when he doesn't have to catch it first... He can probably swing his leg in a similar motion and kick the stationary ball without any concern for defensive pressure... if needed Amazing!!

A punter takes a roster spot and does nothing else... It is freakin' absurd that Johnston couldn't fill the role as the backup place kicker (at least for the freakin' kickoffs!!)
Yeah, I always found that odd. Like your punter should be your backup kicker and vice versa

Before the season last year I thought poorly of the off season and (some) of the draft. Man, was I ever wrong. LOL

So I'm going to give Tricky Nick Casino the benefit of the doubt until I see this mess on the field after a few regular season games.
I think the difference is, and the reason some fans are upset is the cap space. This year the Texans have more flexibility in free agency due to the increase in cap space from last year.

I'm not upset by the lack of activity but I'm also not one of those "In Caserio We Trust" fans. I recognize there may be mechanics I'm unaware of that are going on behind the scenes that influence what a team can and cannot do. There's individual preference from both the teams (primarily coaches) involved in talks with a free agent and the agent/player. For all I know Barkley chose the Eagles over the Texans not because of money but he wanted to stay in that region of the country.

And you're 100% correct. What may look to us like a grievous error by the organization turns out to be the right move. It's all a roll of the dice anyway.

I think a part of the decision was about who is going to wear the green dot. I think Ryans was more comfortable with Al Shaair. Ryans needs an extension of himself on the field. And Caserio had to overpay a bit because he was beat in a couple of earlier negotiations. We need to remember this was Nick's first FA period where he had cap room. Previously, he was nickel and diming his way thru free agency.
In premise I agree with most of what you said but the part about overpaying I disagree. Bet he makes huge impact on Ryan defense, making him look like a bargain 👍

I'm just referring the overpay in regard to the market. Not the future performance, which is unknown.

Al Shaair is now the 8th highest off the ball LB in the league. The contracts that Luvu and Queen get will push Al Shaair down. But still top 10. Who thought he would be a top 10 paid LB at the start of free agency? I'm OK with an overpay to get the guy you want. I also would have been OK with giving Wilkins and Barkley the contracts they got. The future money can always be figured out by a capologist that knows what he is doing.

I usually don't like it when Caserio trades for a guy that's about to be cut. But this is different in that the Texans are no longer sitting near the top of the waiver wire. And Mixon has a team friendly contract (around $6 million in salary and bonuses). The Texans could extend Mixon a year or 2 without pain, and still make Mixon happy.

No longer a pro bowl RB, but Mixon is solid in every aspect. I think he's a plus receiver out of the backfield. It's a good RB class to find a guy in the mid rounds, and I personally still think Pierce can get better.

I’m not to hung up on Singletary. Yeah he exceeded my expectations and was a nice piece to the puzzle but I figured Cj was ok with it so im ok with it. If Cj wanted to keep Devin we would have resigned him
I’m hoping DP shows flashes of his rookie year. A great guy that I’m pulling for. I still think it has to do a lot with the oline..

How much $$ do we have left?

Not known as we do not have specific details as to how the contract money was arranged for several of the free agent pickups. For example, we do not know if caserio will spread Nixon's over a renegotiated or extended deal.

I don't like the fact that Mixon has some past DV issues, but he's a good player. Only 27 so there is plenty of tread left on the tire. Dude has 1800+ touches in his career and only 4 lost fumbles, which is tremendous ball security for a RB. He's great at catching passes, and has some good speed to breakout in the open field. I think he's an upgrade from Singletary, but I would like to see another RB added. Hell they could still add Henry and make a 2 headed monster that would be awesome.

Hard to say because we don't know how the contracts are structured. Like Al Shaair is only counting $5,7 million this year. I don't see some of these contracts, like Autry and the punter. And the draft pool has to be accounted for. I would say $25-30 millionish.

I am really conflicted about this - I still remember seeing him break that girls jaw back in college and thinking, there is no way this guy should play in the NFL. And every time I saw the Bengals play I was feeling iffy seeing him and people cheering for him.

From a football standpoint he should be a great fit - a guy that can run out the clock and catch the ball out of the back field. He is someone we can pair with a rookie HB (or even Pierce if we can teach him the new system). And if the 6m is right, he is also the cheapest of all the FA HBs that signed this off season. But it will be really tough to root for him.

I am still hoping for one of the safeties - and adding Hunter as well would be great. Having three legit pass rushers in the line up would transform our defense.

So far I would say we are still a little worse than we were before FA. Getting Nelson and Rankins back would make it close to even for me. Let‘s see where we go from here.

Sidebar

Mixon is one of if not the best pass blocking HBs in football. He will absolutely be our third down back. I see a HB taken in 3rd to 5th now unless it’s Pierce and Mixon show.

But for his pass protection and receiving chops alone for Stroud, this is a win.

The Texans do not have a 5th (or a 6th) it is 2 4ths and 3 7ths, for day 3 of the draft.

How are the Chargers going to get under the cap before tomorrow? they are $25 million over right now. Who are they going to be forced to release, and do we want them?

Details on his college when a woman in sandwich shop shoved him and he punched her back. His more recent incident 2023 IIRC was dismissed.
Edit:
Helps if I post linc:
