Demeco Ryans’ Staff

Bill Lazor is the only significant name that I saw that had not been discussed or linked.

Lazor overlapped with DeMeco on the Eagles when Chip Kelly was coach. Multiple stints as OC in NFL that were unsuccessful. Though the Bears stint it seemed when Nagy gave him playcalling end of 2020 the offense improved, but when Nagy took back playcalling in 2021 instead of continuing to let Lazor call plays the staff was fired end of season.

Interesting to note that Tannehill’s only seasons as a 4000 yard passer were the two seasons Lazor was OC.

QBs he had as OC:

Tannehill (Miami)
Dalton/Driskel (Cincy)
Foles/Dalton/Trubisky/Fields (Chicago)

bright side o

I'm trying to see the bright side to this hire. But as hyped as he might be, he has not been a truly successful offensive NFL coach.

In 2019, he sustained a back muscular strain and was out for a while. When he returned, he was found to have a sports hernia for which he underwent surgery the beginning of the 2020 offseason. In 2021, he sustained a grade II MCL and placed on IR. He return to play after 4 weeks (mandatory), despite the fact that he was ready to go by 3 weeks. Mid December last year, he suffered a grade II MCL with the IR mandatory time out of 4 weeks (again, he was ready to return by 3 weeks had he been allowed). I'd say he has been quite durable.
Sign him up.

No. Foster went down with the Achilles in Miami. I too was at that game. I remember because we were suffering an embarrassing blowout loss, with Lamar Miller looking like a HOF rb.
And one of those Florida thundershowers came thru to make the butt kicking worse. Wasn't that the game Mallett pulled his crap?

But those QBs were generally highly drafted and Lazor did not do much to make them better (or at so it seems)
Tannehill actually showed to be better than we thought outside of Miami. Just imagine how he would have developed had he gone to the right team with the right staff.

Makes me question that whole paradigm.

Like Demeco coaching behind Salah... how would Vance Joseph look if he was in that circumstance?

Or coordinators under Ried, or Belichick, how much of that is really "their" success?

Coordinators under questionable coaches with questionable circumstances, how much "questionable" are they responsible for?

I think it's really hard for people from our perspective to know how good an assistant coach is/ isn't if we haven't talked to him or any of the people he's coached.

Lazor was at one time considered the next big thing as an OC. Since then he's had multiple jobs as an OC, never with a good QB.
William V. Lazor (born June 14, 1972) is an American football coach who is the senior offensive assistant for the Houston Texans of the National Football League (NFL). Lazor has previously served as the quarterbacks coach for the Washington Commanders, Seattle Seahawks, and Philadelphia Eagles. He is also the former offensive coordinator of the Miami Dolphins, Cincinnati Bengals, and Chicago Bears. He played college football as a quarterback for Cornell University from 1991 to 1993.

This is Lazor's wiki page, an Ivy leaguer, Cornell.
Anyway we've got coaches with QB experience out of their wah-zoos on this staff.

There’s a reason everyone poaches Lil Shanny and Mcvay’s coaching staffs when it comes hiring time.

Agree! I had this exact same conversation with a co-worker. When an OC is working for an offensive minded HC, how do you truly evaluate that OC? Excluding the Chiefs with Bienemy and Reid. It seems the public perception is driven by the media and fans who seem to give total credit to the OC for developing the QB and running a successful offense.

For example. Look at the last hiring cycle. Due to the Eagles' success, Shane Steichen became a hot HC candidate. He gets credit for Jalen Hurts' development and that explosive offense. However, if you look at Nick Siriani's background, he's been part of successful offenses with the Colts, Chargers and even with the Chiefs and Matt Cassel. So, how can any outsider separate Steichen from Siriani's influence? I guess it's a leap of faith you have to take when hiring these young HCs.

I think I remember Brian Hoyer playing the entire game, I’m not 100% sure though. I remember Dolphin fans asking me why Obrien and Romeo were still employed after halftime. To make matters worse, fans kept bringing up the Texans blowout loss to the Falcons from the previous 2-3 weeks. Needles to say, O’Brien was NOT my favorite guy in 2015.

If it makes you feel any better.... he isn't my favorite guy today.

Although mostly Im indifferent in my anger today and moved on... but if they talked about bringing anyone back.... his name would instantly result in me sayin "I quit!...no more."

The hope is always that these hot candidates' experience/exposure from being around successful coaches/players/organizations translates into their own success as a HC. The only way to find out is to give them a chance. Sometimes you get a McVay and other times you get a McDaniel. And if you're really lucky you get Legendary

One thing worth noting with Ryans’ staff:

11 coaches for offense.

7 coaches for defense.

2 for special teams.

I’m not sure what it typically looks like around the league but it appears that Slowik will have plenty of help coaching the offense.

And of course DeMeco will be heavily involved in the defense as the 8th coach on that side of the ball. Though i’d want him focused on being an HC and not necessarily be the defacto DC.
