Welcome Home, DeMeco Ryans

If they can get Brian Johnson as OC whatever QB they have will be set up for success. More important than the QB is getting the offensive coaching hires right. Johnson has elevated every QB he’s had the opportunity to coach. Hopefully Steichen gets passed over on the last two HC jobs and the Texans have an opportunity to bring him in. My #1 pick for OC.
I think everybody agrees we want the offensive coordinator or quarterback coach to elevate whomever our quarterback is. Having said that should we not want him to have the quarterback with the greater skill set? If he thinks Young is too short, he will be heard.

FWIW, this morning on 610 Seth stated that despite the fact that offensive coordinators are usually the hot commodity during hiring cycles, the top five longest tenured head coaches are former defensive, or special teams coordinators.

I haven't checked the accuracy of that claim, but that's what was stated.

Just off the top of my head... Belichik, Carrol, Tomlin, Harbaugh.

Belichick - DC
Tomlin - DC
Harbaugh - ST

Off the top of my head. I don't know who the other two are off hand. Interesting.

• 49ers passing-game coordinator Bobby Slowik is well-positioned to land in Houston as DeMeco Ryans’s offensive coordinator. He’s considered next in Kyle Shanahan’s assembly line of talented young offensive assistants, and could bring Klint Kubiak with him (Ryans remains close with Kubiak’s dad, who drafted him as a first-year Texans coach in 2006) as quarterbacks coach. My understanding is Slowik was atop Ryans’s staff list. It’d be interesting to see if Shanahan would offer Slowik an OC title to keep him in San Francisco.

Levis threw 23 INTs in the last 2 seasons. Young and Stroud each threw 12 INTs total in those 2 seasons. Levis threw 43 TDs, Young threw 79 TDs, Stroud 85 TDs in those 2 years. Levis yards/per attempt and completion% are lower than both Young and Stroud. Levis is Black Bortles, Jake Locker, Blaine Glabbart, Zach Wilson, etc..., a bust waiting to happen.
Hey, now! He could be Joe Flacco and that guy won a Super Bowl.

I've never read a draft profile for Brett Favre, but this seems like it could ea description of him coming into the league
I've wondered how Farve would fair in today's league. I don't know if this is true, but turnovers seem to hurt teams more now. It would be interesting to compare the two eras statistically to see.

5 of the top 6... Reid is 5th on the list, McDermott the 6th

Sure like to draft a carbon copy of him out of this TE class.

William Payne Durham, Purdue 6-5 255 really impressed in Mobile last week. All around, blocker, smart, great hands, runs good routes. For someone not listed in PFF TE rankings (can’t mock him) if his background and medicals check out @ combine, would use pick #65 on him. Kittle, 6-4 247 was selected by 49ers in 2017 with the 5th #146.

Some of the best defensive head coaches.

Bill Belichick - 9 SBs
Don Shula - 6 SBs
Tom Landry - 5 SBs
Chuck Noll - 4 SBs
Bill Parcells - 3 SBs
John Madden - 2 SBs - 5 AFCCG - 1 AFL Championship (Career regular season record 103-32-7 .750. He never had a losing season in 10 years as HC)

Some of the best offensive head coaches.

Vince Lombardi- maybe the greatest of all. 5 NFL Championships (including the first 2 Superbowls) & 6 conference titles in 9 seasons
Andy Reid - 4 SBs (including this year)
Joe Gibbs - 3 SBs
Mike Holmgren - 3 SBs
Bill Walsh - 3 SBs

Not to bag on Lovie, but the contrast here is noticeable. Players were complaining that Lovie didn't listen to them. Communication is apparently one of DeMeco's strengths.
Remember, everybody has a plan until they get punched in the mouth.

I'm expecting good things from Demeco, but right now I don't know if we can compare the two.

I'm sure players were saying the same things about Lovie the DC.

Yeah it’s going to be pretty interesting to see how he handles the constant backlash from the media. Especially if they’re still losing a lot of games. IMO Lovie started losing his cool after the biweek lol

Anyone got the goods on Burke? Not a guy I know.

From the Arizona Cardinals website

Burke joined the Jets last year after spending two seasons (2019-20) with the Eagles, first as a defensive assistant in 2019 and then as run game coordinator/defensive line coach in 2020. While in Philadelphia, Burke led a defensive line that forced the highest percentage of opponent three-and-out drives in the NFL, ranked third in rushing defense (90.1 ypg) and fourth in third-down defense (34.2%). In 2020, the Eagles ranked 3rd in the NFL in sacks (49), including 40 from the defensive line which featured Pro Bowlers DT Fletcher Cox and DE Brandon Graham.
Prior to working with Philadelphia, Burke spent three seasons with the Miami, first as the Dolphins linebackers coach in 2016 and defensive coordinator for two years (2017-18). In his first season as Miami's defensive coordinator in 2017, the Dolphins improved from 20th to 16th in total defense and also elevated from 30th to 14th in rushing defense. He helped guide CB Xavien Howard to his first Pro Bowl selection after he tied for the NFL lead with a career-high seven interceptions in 2018.

Interesting read about how Culley and Lovie became HCs of the Texans. As stated by CnD...it wasn't Nick Caserio. He probably didn't even get a vote. However, from what I know he indeed did get his HC in Meco

Good article. Nailed it at the end, too:

If Caserio is this terrible general manager, as some in the national media would have you believe, then how did he hit on so many draft picks already? How did he clear out tens of millions of dollars in bad player contracts? How did he convince DeMeco Ryans, arguably the hottest head coaching candidate in this year’s coaching cycle, to not only sign with the Texans, but do so with an excitement and exuberance that has reignited an almost entirely disenfranchised fanbase?

They've already started, but as a fan, I feel like I can look forward to a true rebuild without the baggage of the former regime and the scandal of the pervy, selfish QB.

They have given me hope, even though I have not yet sold my old home in the comfortable town of Pessimism to move to the town of Optimist, but depending on the next few months I may have to price rentals and look into a U-haul.

And I thought one of Lovie's strengths was his relationship to players when he came to Houston. Was that a misconception or did he change? His talk with Tunsil was allegedly the impetus of getting the behemoth to come back strong in 2022 for a pro bowl season. idonno:
