Welcome Home, DeMeco Ryans

Do this without being a dirty, bitchmade team.

I don't want to root for a bunch of Haynesworth, Finnegan, Rodney Harrison, Suh-style garbage.

I don't anticipate that, I'm just posting for the record.

Intelligent, disciplined, driven, tough ass defense. That's what I want. And you can do it without being a collection of trash.
Yeah I didn’t mean in a dirty way but also not to have that “aww schucks we’ll get them next time” either. lol

Hahaa he said take a qb next year. Idk if you’ve been living under a rock dude but most Texan fans don’t want to watch Davis Mills turn the ball over every game for another season. You take a qb, if that qb doesn’t work out, you’ll have the option again next season. Other than that, great hire by the texans. Hopefully they don’t screw this up like they do everything. Demeco will attract free agents, im all for it

I don't want them to draft a QB just because. I don't see a franchise QB in the early rounds this year! Stick it out with mills another year and see what he looks like with a new OC. Use your picks to draft the best players available. Then draft a QB next year if there is one you like. You don't just throw away a 2nd overall and say well if it doesn't work out we can use next years 1st.... WTF.

I couldn’t agree more! Upgrade every position that needs upgrading while giving Mills his last go under a competent coaching staff for the first time. We don’t have the luxury of gambling any draft picks on small midgets just because activists demand it!

I honestly don't mind if we went OL and Edge 1st round. DT or OL 2nd round and then just BPA at a need spot. Why? You win in the trenches, and D wins Championships. Build the OL and D. Take a QB next year and try to get everything in place to be competitive next year (2024) with the rookie QB. Plus side, I don't think Meco is going to want a smaller QB. Meaning that if we do take one it's Levis or Stroud.
Or Anthony Richard’s. He’s the perfect fit for that type offense.

So I know one thing this morning - Cal McNair almost certainly got laid last night because he had just gone man-mano against some of the richest and most powerful the NFL has to offer in the persons of legendary Wall Street Trader/ wheeler dealer billionaire Carolina Panthers owner David Tepper & the Walton family (yea that Walton family !), new owners of the Denver Broncos to beat them out and secure the services of the most sought after young assistant coach in the NFL to be the Houston Texans new HC.
So I doubt that Cal has felt as good as he did yesterday after wrapping up negotiation with Demeco & his agent since he was like 25 or 30 years old.

I believe he was reacquainted with his special purpose....and now understands the difference between a throwdown and X-Box.

We may very well get a QB in Free Agency or highly possible in the draft. I was stating that Meco is use to a more typical QB which is Stroud and Levis (who have high to mid 1st round grades). And I don't mind going OL, DL, LB in the draft. Along with say a 5th round pick on a 3rd down/change of pace RB. Already, talk of a few QBs Meco has been around with the 49ers have popped up as potential players he might try to bring with him. True, Lamar Jackson has been mentioned as well.

I wouldn't mind if our draft looked like this in the 1st. For many of the reasons mentioned, I think this is the right QB.

I don't want them to draft a QB just because
I'm a Texans fan. A KoolAid Sipper. Whatever they do I'm going to try to see it in the best light possible.

But if I had my rathers I'd like them to install their systems for a couple of years before they draft a 1st round QB to put him in the best possible position to win from day 1.

I don't want him & the WRs learning route rules, patterns, & timing at the same time. I want the receivers to know how to do what's right & the QB aspire to that ideal.

I don't want him & the OL to be learning line calls, blitz pick-ups, spacing & timing at the same time. I want the OL to be able to define a pocket that a new QB will know what to expect & how to navigate it.

I don't want to see another play with the QB turning left to hand the ball off & the RB is looking for the ball on his right.

A whole bunch of little things that should be well established before we put a "need to learn at the NFL level" QB on the field.

I know other teams have put rookie QBs on the field with new coaches before & they didn't have a problem with it. But there have been far more that have.

If you see a Trey Lance & you've got to have him. Fine, draft him. But carry two real QBs ahead of him on the depth chart & be resolved not to play him until you have the little issues straight.

I have been hearing today that Meco is going to sign a reported 6yr deal. I have not heard or seen any money amounts. Just the length of the deal.

Color me blown away. I can't believe the Texans actually got Demeco to return home. I thought for sure the Bronco's & that Walmart money would have scooped him up.

I heard on Monday that Denver was going to really go after Meco. And the Texans didn't want to get into a bidding war. Glad Meco wanted to be hear and we didn't have to deal with that. Have to admit that I was worried when I saw that report. However, it all worked out

I have heard that Lance is one of the players who might end up in Houston.

Which makes me think this was a Jamila decision.

I agree with the redzone stuff with the shanny/Kubiak style offense and smaller OL. I think the 9ers are more hybrid though.

But most teams are going to have issues if they are behind the chains. But that’s where having a passing game and a qb that can make things happen comes into play.

If they're running a hybrid, (Which I think they are) then Munchak as OL coach should come into play. Ryans needs experienced guys on the offensive side of the ball.

Ryans is hiring a staff that will include coordinators. He will get to focus on being the team leader and HC. Also, Ryans was the QB on defense when he played, and therefore gives him an edge at picking up the nuances of time management from the HC position.
We will see about this.

Offensive coordinator options
Troy Walters, Bengals wide receivers coach

The Texans reportedly have already requested permission to speak to Walters, according to CBS Sports.

Walters, who played in the NFL from 2000-07, has been with the Bengals since the 2020 season, starting as an assistant wide receivers coach. He was promoted to wide receivers coach in 2020. Cincinnati has made it to the last two AFC Championship Games and played in last season's Super Bowl.

The Bengals also have one of the best wide receiver tandems in the NFL in Ja’Marr Chase and Tee Higgins, both of whom had 1,000-yard campaigns in each of the past two seasons.

Walters, 46, has experience calling plays. He was offensive coordinator at Nebraska in 2018 and 2019 before making his jump to the NFL.

Bobby Slowik, 49ers passing game coordinator

The Texans have requested permission to speak to Slowik, according to NFL Network.

Slowik, 35, became San Francisco's passing game coordinator this season. And despite losing quarterbacks Jimmy Garoppolo and Trey Lance to injury in the regular season, the 49ers still made it to the NFC Championship Game with rookie quarterback Brock Purdy, a seventh-round pick who in nine regular-season games threw for 1,374 yards, 13 touchdowns and four interceptions. Purdy threw three touchdowns and no interceptions in three postseason games but was rendered a nonfactor in the title game after hurting his elbow.

Anthony Lynn, 49ers running backs and assistant head coach

Lynn, 54, who was head coach of the Chargers from 2017-20, joined the 49ers this season as assistant head coach and running backs coach. He is also a candidate for Washington Commanders offensive coordinator.

In four seasons with the Chargers, Lynn was 33-31. Los Angeles made the playoffs in 2018 after a 12-4 season, but Lynn was fired in 2020 after the Chargers finished 7-9 in their second consecutive losing season.

Justin Herbert was named the NFL’s offensive rookie of the year for 2020 under Lynn, passing for 4,336 yards, 31 touchdowns and 10 interceptions and running for five touchdowns.

A Texas native, Lynn grew up in McKinney.

Klint Kubiak, Broncos quarterbacks coach

Kubiak, 35, is a Houston native and the son of former Texans coach Gary Kubiak.

Before he became Denver's quarterbacks coach and passing game coordinator, he was offensive coordinator for the Vikings in 2021. During his lone season as offensive coordinator, the Vikings averaged the 12th-most yards and 14th-most points in the NFL.

Kubiak also interviewed for the Buccaneers' offensive coordinator position last week.

Ryans worked with Klint’s brother, Klay, with the 49ers. Klay, who is currently assistant quarterbacks coach, could be an option as Houston's quarterbacks coach.

Thomas Brown, Los Angeles Rams tight ends and assistant head coach

Brown, who interviewed for the Texans’ head coaching job, and Ryans have knowledge of each other thanks to the Rams and 49ers' twice-a-year meetings.

A former Georgia running back, Brown, 36, was drafted in the sixth round by the Falcons in 2008. He played three seasons in the NFL before getting into coaching.

He coached at Georgia, Chattanooga, Wisconsin, Marshall and Georgia again before he was hired as Miami's offensive coordinator in 2016. At the time, he was one of the youngest offensive coordinators in the country.

He was hired by the Rams in 2020, coaching in different roles. Under Brown's tutelage, Rams tight end Tyler Higbee finished the 2022 season with the most receptions of his seven-year career and the second-most receiving yards.

Defensive coordinator option
Kris Kocurek

Kocurek, 44, is a Texas native who grew up in Deanville. He has been the 49ers’ defensive line coach since the 2019 season and has worked with Ryans since then.

The 49ers allowed the second-fewest rushing yards (77.4 per game) in the NFL this season.

Defensive end Nick Bosa led the league with 18.5 sacks in 2022. As a team, the 49ers were tied for 10th with 44 sacks.

Hannah certainly isn't uneasy on the eyes. I think Cal hit a homer with Hannah. And she isn't just a pretty face. She appears to be smart as a whip and I think her involvement has been very key in a quick turnaround with Cal and the franchise in general. Fly on the wall time here - I think it's more likely than not that she was the key figure in jettisoning Easterbunny. The change in Cal and the way this team is being run over the last 365 days couldn't be more night and day.

I've always said I'll be critical when deserved (which has been a lot over the years) and I'll be praiseworthy when deserved. Right now Cal and Hannah deserve a ton of accolades for what they've pulled off here. Other than opening day against the Cowboys, today has to be the best feeling I've ever had about the Texans future. I've said it from jump - DeMeco is a rockstar coach in the making. He can be here a decade or longer and bring one or more championships to this city. Note CAN - there are so many factors and it's very difficult, but we've now got the guy that can pull it off if the stars align. I'm pumped and ready for game one in Sept. Seven months is too long to wait!

Very very solid points…great post.

Hope you're right

I'm more in the prove it to me mode.

So is now a good time to begin predicting wins yet? Or should we wait for the draft?

DeMeco alone will add three or fours wins to the schedule by just his presence alone. I say we're back in the playoffs in 2024.

I dont remember the schedule but if I remembered right it's much easier than last yrs schedule, so they should be able to win 3-4 more games if the draft goes well. If Ryans can talk guys like Ward/Shaair/Ebukan to joining him on Kirby and they get decent QB play they possibly could win even more if they can stay healthy because depth will still be lacking.

I wasn't worried a single moment about competing with "Walmart money".

Both owners are wealthy and neither of them would come close to draining their bank accounts to acquire his services.

Both owners could offer him $1 billion, sure Texans ownership would feel it more..... but i doubt either would put that much on the table. Having more than the other only matters if the other is willing to go beyond what one is capable of paying. IF neither is willing to go beyond that number its meaningless who has more, but who is willing to simply pay more, not whether the other cn pay that much.

Meco returning is great and all but I still want to see who he brings to the table with him. I believe he will be a great HC eventually, but expecting hiccups to start I believe he is going to need a solid group of guys around him to make the start of his HC career less painful.

If he hire a great staff and hits on 4-5 guys in the draft, plus 3-4 guys in FA, I could see them winning 4-5 more games, particularly with the easier schedule.

Mistakes will be made. ALL coaches make mistakes. I've seen hoodie make huge mistakes. So, like a rookie QB, I'll be grading somewhat on a curve in year one. By year two, I expect to see a smooth operation, allowing for the usual occasional error that literally all HC's make. Hopefully, those are few and far between by year two.

But I'm more in the big picture realm with Meco. I think he can be a great leader, teacher, motivator, and a very good X's and O's guy too. In other words, he is the total package. I'll excuse the rare flub when considering his big-picture attributes.

Depth will be a problem for another few years, but they can begin putting a lot of the starting pieces together this season.

Im not expecting perfection, Im expecting growing pains..... but IF he doesn't select the right staff to be around him, those pains will be a lot more painful and a lot less likely that his likely future for being a very good HC benefits some other team rather than us. I'd prefer his coaching to benefit us.

I have never been the fan expecting Superbowl year one. Im happy IF we are constantly improving. The victories will come eventually IF they keep moving forward.

LZ mentioned on his show this morning that Lovie booted Easterby for meddling with personnel and not staying in his lane as he had been instructed. Rings true to me but either way that cancer is gone and now the fan base can continue to heal from the trash that we have had to live with in recent years. Thank goodness for that. And hopefully Hannah has a positive impact on gameboy and this fanbase can finally be proud of being a fan of the team again.

This is a good draft for linemen on both sides. I hope they take advantage of that. This is also a deep draft for defensive talent, so I hope they end up using those 6th round picks and not trading them away.

If they need to use a 6th to move up then I'm on board with this.

Say they like a guy lik R. Johnson and have already used pick 4-103 and Johnson is there in the 4th. would you trade the 2nd pick in both the 5th and 6th rds to move up and bring Johnson home? I would, especially knowing that I had 2 more 6th rd picks available.

Sounds good allow me to ask this scenario stick it out with Mills if he's healthy but if injured or a bad showing who would then be the backup QB? Maybe this may be another reason to draft a QB not necessarily a first round pick no?

I would do that. His bio also states he was a QB before he was a RB. We could solve two problems at once. LOL
