Head Coach Candidates

I would give other HC's more leeway because they didn't back me into a corner where I would be saying to the agent you screwed me once and I would like another my only ask is that you use vasoline this time.
What is the difference between Kalfka selecting Stroud and any other coach selecting Stroud?

Hire Kalfka and let him work with Caserio like Lovie did and I think you will be very happy with the results. I will feel very good about whatever QB Kalfka chooses in this draft to marry the HC/QB careers with.
Hire Kafka, fire Caserio. Let Kafka bring in a GM he's comfortable with (Mike Borgonzi?). Kafka is a smart guy. Smarter than anyone in NRG. If you're going to clean house, clean house.

But you wouldn't hold any HC accountable if they selected a different QB?

I said I would give them more leeway, because I doubt Young/Levis will be renegotiating during yr 3 like Murray/Derrick did. They got the deal done in yr 3 offseason.

Agree.
SP is a top tier HC and would add stability and respect and a bunch of experience and know how to this organization.
Who wouldn't want that?

This is the reason I'm mixed on Payton. The Texans are perceived as a bunch of confused clowns. Payton would change that perception immediately just by being in the building.

Tough division, and I'd be shocked if Payton saw shorty as the future.

Have you been there? You'd rather look at Exxon refineries than the Rocky Mountains? Not to mention, give me snow any day of the week and twice on Sunday over 100 with 95% humidity.

'eh, they've also got a very progressive state income tax that Texas does not have and are in a division that the Chiefs will own for many years to come.

And while we've got humidity and mosquitoes, they've got thin air being a mile+ above sea level and some seriously nasty winter weather.

Besides, Houston is only three hours away from Westlake, TX., where he's got a nice home.

Imagine you are the most high-profile HC available interviewing with different owners, first up is the Texans. On the Zoom call is:

Socially awkward Gameboy Cal McNair

Squeaky Hannah McNair

and

Nick Cliche Caserio

So you got that going for you.

lol that's hilarious.

It's these dolts that could cough up two 1sts for a potential egomaniac head coach. It's not out of the realm of possibilities.

If they do something that stupid, I think I'd be done with the franchise. I just couldn't support someone that stupid with my time and money.

Jets 2.5 million in negative cap.

Colts 30 million in positive if they cut Ryan.

How you working that deal?
Trade/releasing Corey Davis and Braxton Berrios save ~15 mil right there. I’m sure they could rework some contracts to help free up some more $.

I could also see Derrick reworking his contract to go to an up and coming team.

On Thursday, NFL Network insider Tom Pelissero joined The Rich Eisen Show and talked about the “Push for Payton.” He began, though, by pushing back a bit on the notion that Tepper would do just about anything to reel in the former New Orleans Saints head coach.

“I don’t know that to be the case regarding the Panthers,” he said. “I believe David Tepper is someone who is going to be very skeptical about having to give up multiple high draft picks to get a coach on top of paying him top dollar and all the other things Sean Payton is going to want.”

Arizona: He’ll want to set the personnel operation and the Cardinals moved to hire a GM first. That does not seem on paper seem like a situation he’ll want to get into. Never say never.

Carolina: I don’t know that it’ll line up with working out a trade.

Houston: Does Sean Payton want to work in a setup with Nick Caserio? They had a conversation. That is certainly still alive.

The one that makes most sense is Denver. …

I don’t know that to be true about the Panthers doing whatever it takes.

How much control does Payton want?

Sean Payton, back in 2006, flipped that entire organization. Saints had no winning history, coming off a hurricane, had to completely remodel things in terms of players, made one incredible move in Brees but there were other things Sean had to fix over the course of time. He’s shown he can do it but he was also 42/43, now he’s 59. This is not a 10-year build for Sean. He’ll want to do it his way and get things in order. It’s not just a matter of power/control but he won’t want to be told “No, we do things this way because that’s how we do them here.” He’ll want to do things his way, that he knows to be successful in the NFL. It’ll be an interesting conversation. All 4 teams that have requested him have a GM. I have no doubt he’d want to bring in one of his own personnel people.

Reported on 610, just now, Gannon does not have any further interviews scheduled with other teams. Googling, I see Broncos and Vikings have previously requested an interview but I haven't found anything verifying Gannon actually had the interviews. 610 also reported several sources saying Gannon is coming to Houston.
This sounds like Cal and Nick playing scared and wanting to get off of the merry-go-round. Had too many potential interviews saying thanks but no thanks. Another scary part about this is there are better candidates who are scheduled for interviews. If they said no thanks, they may have had no choice.

When you are negotiating a $100 MILLION payday you keep all of your options open. And Payton probably had no idea just how dysfunctional Houston was until he was 5 minutes in on the Zoom and immediately thought, how do I get the hell out of here?
He's trying to create competition for his services.

It was reported today than Gannon had completed interviews with the Broncos and Vikings.

Recent developments only confirm my belief that they have a deal with Gannon.

Also, based on the fact that they interviewed Payton via zoom, I don't think they were ever serious.

I think the interest in Payton was purely marketing to make the search more legitimate.
Considering that they've flown privately to meet candidates in the past but didn't extend that to Payton, it seems pretty likely to me.

And honestly, I'm not mad about it.
I'm good with Gannon and hopefully some of the names he's been associated with.

Unfortunately for y'all, my HC evaluation historically is questionable at best, so despite the fact that I'd be happy with it, this could turn out to be complete shyte lol

ESPN’s Adam Schefter joined “Schlereth and Evans” on 104.3 The Fan on Thursday morning and was asked about this development. Schefter said New Orleans GM Mickey Loomis can ask for whatever he wants, but what he’ll actually receive in return is a different story.

“What I would say to that is this: he could say he’s looking for ten first-round picks. It doesn’t matter, okay. It’s going to be, in the end, I believe it’s going to be a first-round pick and then maybe some change depending on where he goes and what’s negotiated,” Schefter said.

That’s consistent with what NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport has reported from the start. The consensus is a first-round pick for Payton and a little something extra. Two of them seems steep. And as Schefter points out, Payton will actually be trading for himself when this is all said and done.

“And, let’s also be honest. You know who Mickey’s going to be negotiating that trade with? Sean is going to do the trade for Sean, when he has a new team. Sean is not going to be of the mind that it’s good for him to go trade his next two first-round draft picks. With all due respect, I would be floored if they got two ones for him,” Schefter said.

Really? Even with the kafka and demeco interviews left?

You really believe that he has not checked out the entire organization thoroughly? If true that would rule him out in my opinion.

You think one’s opinion about someone can’t change after meeting them regardless of thoroughly “checking them out” beforehand?

Looking at your last paragraph you seem qualified to be owner and GM.

Do you remember which one of their experts were saying that?

They weren't experts. They were just quoting a couple of blogasphere comments that more or less tied into their other comment that Gannon didn't have any more interviews scheduled. Pretty much the same as the twitter posts posted here on TT. Just opinion.

Later this afternoon I found the posts that Denver and Minnesota had completed their formally announced interviews with Gannon, so presumably, as of today Gannon has no further interviews scheduled.

They were just expressing a view that it may seem that Gannon has the edge, what with Denver apparently in the lead on Payton, on the Houston HC job.

I posted simply because it seemed to me that news had been concentrating on Payton and here was a report with another angle.

Pretty sure that was last year, as Minnesota doesn't have an opening.

Blankedly blank, this is 2023 ain't it. Same for the Bronco interview. Why in the blankedly blank is google posting jan 2022 news at the top of the search results.
For Jan 2023 all I find is Texans linked to Gannon. Really need to pay close attention to the posted dates. My bad.
