Head Coach Candidates

ESPN Article

This is a great article about Ryans evolution as a coach. I’m excited that he has chosen to interview with us.
He might be a great coach. But I have no way of knowing if he’ll be a good HC. I don’t know if any of the candidates would be good HCs.

The thing that worries me the most about Demeco is that I loved him as a player & he seems like a really good likeable guy.

I’m not looking for the Texans to hire the most likeable, feel good, big splash. I want the Texans to find the guy most likely to lead this team to a championship. Might be Demeco. I hope he is. But that’s the problem.

The Houston situation is better than the situation he took over in NO. Cal has shown he will pay whatever towards the coaching staff also. Payton and Cal are also close in age. Plus it frees up Carsterio to move back out the spotlight.
Does Cal pay top dollar for assistant coaches?

It is not difficult to know who Cowherd is mocking about being a bad owner and screwing up a Zoom call. Payton spent hours telling Cowherd how bad and dysfunctional the Texans ownership is. Denver had the wherewithal to fly to LA to personally meet with Payton. Cal and the misfits zoomed it in. For those who don’t get it yet, Payton is not going to Houston. Since Payton is flying to New York to meet with Tepper, Carolina is in the drivers seat.

Holy crap, listening to that made me even more embarrassed for our team. There’s no one else but the Texans that he could’ve been talking about is there? 😧

Imagine you are the most high-profile HC available interviewing with different owners, first up is the Texans. On the Zoom call is:

Socially awkward Gameboy Cal McNair

Squeaky Hannah McNair

and

Nick Cliche Caserio

So you got that going for you.

He's not going to go against what Payton wants to do if reasonable compensation is met
"If reasonable compensation is met".

If Texans are offering #12, is #29 reasonable? What else will the Broncos have to give up? Almost certainly a number one in '24. And more. How much more?

It certainly appears that Payton and Denver are in tune. I wonder if they have discussed compensation with Loomis. Indications are that the basics are known, that is, two firsts are a starting point. But with #29 being this year's first, have they gotten down to the nitty gritty of what additional compensation will be required and is Denver willing to give up this draft capital? This is a three way party.

Teams aren't bidding against each other. Payton will select one team he wants to coach and then that team will have to come to agreement with the Saints

Therein lies the sticking point for the Saints. Reality, Sean won't be coaching the Saints any time soon.....more like never. The Saints would more than likely be negotiating with a single team....which cuts their ability to demand quite a bit. Of the interested teams, the Texans are the only team with the available assets to make a serious move. Denver may want Sean, but would they truly have the available resources to give up? Loomis may have his hopes, but if the Saints want Sean to move on, they'll probably have to accept the best offer given or get nothing.

Other than the fact that Denver is willing to give Payton a $100M contract, what is attractive about Denver. Payton would be stepping into a cesspool of a problem. Their record this past year was 5-12. They only have, currently, $9.5M in cap space. They won't have a first round pick and likely won't have one in 2024 either. And if Loomis holds to his guns, they also may not have a two or a three this year. Tough to rebuild in the short term with no draft capital and no cap space.

This would be strictly a money grab on the part of Payton. I frankly don't see why Denver would be interested.

True. It’s always questionable on whether a candidate has what it takes to make it as a HC. The only candidate that has HC experience is Payton.
Which I don’t want to give up the draft capital for. I’m willing to risk it and hire a unproven candidate.

I like all of our choices. I like the wide net of quality candidates that NC has cast. I’m hoping we know who the new coach is by the end of the month.

If we don't make the choice before then, we will again obtain a new HC by leftover default.

Sean should be rubbing hands and giggling.

Assuming Philly makes it to the SB, Gannon and Steichen should still be available Feb 13. Both are at the top of my list and both have had first interviews. Can a coach be signed before their team is eliminated from playoffs? Kafka may be available to sign next week if Giants lose to Philly, but Gannon, Steichen and Payton are at the top of my list, so this could drag out a bit.

Yep, and it helps that Loomis and Payton are close friends.

Of course he is. This is a money grab. $100MM PLUS. Cowherd's discussion of his 4-5 hour conversation with Payton was quite damning for the dysfunctional Texans. Hire Michael Kafka. Fire Nick Caserio. And start with a clean slate.

Hire Kalfka and let him work with Caserio like Lovie did and I think you will be very happy with the results. I will feel very good about whatever QB Kalfka chooses in this draft to marry the HC/QB careers with.

Even if it's Stroud?

I’ll admit that I don’t know all the intricacies of the rules regarding head coaching hires in the playoffs I’d love to know before the end of the month, but I know that there’s a possibility, especially if our top candidates are advancing to the Super Bowl that I could be well into February.

Even if it's Stroud?

Yep, but if I was Cal I would tell him, we're going to give you your guy, and if this doesn't workout in 3 yrs and the trash agent comes back wanting a new contract, I'm trading him and firing you. Why? Because it's been proven you cant win a championship with your QB taking up more than 15% of the cap and renegotiating Stroud's contract would surely put you over that %.

But you wouldn't expect that if it was any other coach/QB?

I would give other HC's more leeway because they didn't back me into a corner where I would be saying to the agent you screwed me once and I would like another my only ask is that you use vasoline this time.
