Head Coach Candidates

Sorry but I'm not buying Carolina. Someone make a decent argument for Carolina other than $$$. Denver...maybe I could see it. But objectively speaking, Houston is the best place for Payton. I don't even think it's that close honestly.

To me, the Texan's biggest competitor isn't Carolina or even Denver - it's Fox. It might come down to Houston or just keeping his Fox gig and seeing what shakes loose next year.
If Houston would give up 12 would Panthers give up 9? Who is QB? Tepper takes another beating to maybe get Caleb in 2024?

If NO will take a round 2 from Carolina why not higher pick from Texans?

I watched Rich Eisen's show today and he had Florio on who spoke extensively about Payton and his interests in Denver, Carolina,
and his situation with the Saints but didn't even mention Houston not even that the Texans had interviewed Payton.
Now it' my impression that Florio has a pretty good handle on the NFL scene, though you might not concur ?
I was listening about 1130? If that helps. I don't know who the guys speaking were.

Payton is believed to be asking for a contract that would make him one of the highest-paid coaches in the NFL. Two sources said he is seeking a four-year deal that would pay him between $20 million and $25 million.

Loomis’ stance is if a team is willing to pay Payton a deal worth roughly half that of a franchise quarterback, then the draft pick compensation should be of equivalent value.

He’s seeking compensation similar to what the Oakland Raiders received from Tampa Bay in exchange for Jon Gruden in 2002, with two first-round draft picks being the starting point. If future first-round picks are part of the offer, then they would have to be supplemented by higher picks this season.

Whether Payton’s suitors agree with Loomis’ valuation remains to be seen. But in this negotiation, Loomis holds the cards. Payton is under contract with the Saints through the 2024 season, so the Saints own his rights. And any team that wishes to hire him as its next coach must compensate the Saints for his services.

If they are unwilling to match Loomis’ demands, he can nix the deal. The team would have to find a new coach, and Payton would have to return to his analyst role at Fox Sports for another year.

Meanwhile, Payton and his potential new team could call Loomis’ bluff and see whether he is willing to nix the deal and receive no compensation in a year in which the Saints lack a first-round pick because of a 2022 trade with the Philadelphia Eagles.

Loomis has told people in the Saints organization that he is comfortable with waiting a year for compensation, if it comes to that.

Payton has countered that the compensation would change “considerably … if nothing happens this year.”

Loomis contends otherwise. And historical precedent is on his side. In 1997, the New York Jets were forced to trade multiple draft picks to the Patriots — including a future first-rounder — to acquire the rights to head coach Bill Parcells.

“It’s complicated because I have such great respect for him,” Loomis said last week, referring to Payton. “He’s a close friend of mine. He’s a great coach. I want the best for him. I do. We do, collectively as an organization. He gave everything he could possibly give to the New Orleans Saints and took us to heights the organization, the team, never achieved before.

"So I absolutely want the best for him. But I also recognize that … his contract is a valuable asset to our club, and it’s our duty to maximize that.”

Payton began the interview process this week, meeting with the Houston Texans via Zoom on Monday and visiting with Denver Broncos officials in Los Angeles on Tuesday. He is scheduled to meet with Carolina Panthers owner David Tepper in New York on Thursday. The Arizona Cardinals also have sought permission to interview Payton, although an interview has not been scheduled.

The interviews with the Texans and Broncos went well, according to sources. Payton was particularly impressed with the Broncos group, who he met with for several hours. He likes majority owner Rob Walton and the management team he has assembled in Denver. He’s also comfortable with the Houston brain trust and likes the draft capital, salary cap room and wide-open playing field he’d have to rebuild the Texans.

That albatross, Russell Wilson, hanging on the Broncos could be an ugly factor in Payton’s decision. Russell got his huge new contract last season and promptly shite the bed. Broncos aren’t getting out of the contract anytime soon…..so the big question becomes, does Payton really feel like RW could be turned around and put back on the path of redemption? On a side note, the Broncos cap situation isn’t much better than their RW situation.

Texans should be in the drivers seat. The question, are the Texans in a position to play hardball with the Saints? By hardball….could they push the compensation to 2024 and 2025?

I've heard it said that Payton likes Russell Wilson.

I was beginning to warm to the idea of using #12 to acquire the rights to Payton. But giving up our #2 AND our #12 ... price is too high. Loomis is saying two number ones, THIS YEAR, is the STARTING POINT for negotiations. If future number ones are involved, additional 2023 picks ( #34???) will be needed. So a minimum price will be both Cleveland number ones in '23 and '24, plus, a three? Or #34? Nope. Too steep. I'm back to square one. Let's make this easier ... Denver, give NO the store.

If they want 2 firsts and won't budge, I'm 100% out on Payton.

I'd call their bluff and see if they would take less, and if not, call it a day and move on. He's a coach, not a God. Let's get real.

Let's focus on the 4 guys that have the best shot. Among those, I'm still on the Demeco train. And he wouldn't cost us valuable draft capital.

I thought there was a post with Sean Payton saying mid to late 1st round pick?

That's Payton. He's not calling the shots. Loomis is.

As they say, squeaky wheel gets the grease. Loomis can ask, but he might as well play his lotto numbers as well. Payton is in no hurry…..he could wait until next season.

Play hardball with a hard time frame for a decision. If the Saints, Loomis, and Payton blink….make a deal with Gannon and get this show moving towards the start of the 2023 NFL season.

I believe the window for further contact/interviews with Gannon and Steichen has closed until January 30th.

Payton is not going to let Loomis rape his new team. If it's not happening until next year, Payton loses $25 million - TV salary and Loomis loses a 1st round pick in this draft. I think they find a way to make it happen this year.

Hope this is the straight dope. I'd maybe be willing to give up #12, although I'd try to haggle it down to #34. No more.

Of course there’s no guarantees, but it seems a lot of people are arguing against a guy who has done it over someone who has never even been a HC.

Yes, no matter who we hire is a gamble, but that’s why you probably want the best odds there are.
Seems like other top rung coaches that burnt out and left the coaching ranks after being successful, seems like when they come back they stick around for a few years and are gone. It's like it takes them a few years back before they decide they should have stayed gone.
I'd rather have a sharp young coach like Gannon that can make his name with the Texans. Him or Ryans.
And those two won't cost us any draft capital.
Both Gannon and Ryans look like they're ready! How did Jimmy J do on his 2nd NFL career? Closer to home, how did Bum do in N.O.? I know thats a reach...How about Ditka?
Anyway,
I'd rather have someone we chose/selected to come to Houston on their shot and turn this team into a winner, rather that take New Orleans' coach to come in and try to fix us. Same as I'd rather draft Young, Levis or Stroud and make one of them ours rather than bringing in Brady or Carr for a year or two.

Looks to me like what Loomis is angling for might be to make trading away just the number 12 pick seem that much more attractive. Just look at the posters here already saying in response to his demand of 2 1sts that they were just warming up to giving up the 12 pick but no more than that. If he can artificially inflate the value of his asset and then back off of that thereby making the haggled asking price that much more agreeable than he can get what he may have originally wanted all along.

For all we know he caught wind of the Texans front office internally putting their feet down on the number 12 pick and this is his response/tactic. Idk, maybe..

Great post.

It is not difficult to know who Cowherd is mocking about being a bad owner and screwing up a Zoom call. Payton spent hours telling Cowherd how bad and dysfunctional the Texans ownership is. Denver had the wherewithal to fly to LA to personally meet with Payton. Cal and the misfits zoomed it in. For those who don’t get it yet, Payton is not going to Houston. Since Payton is flying to New York to meet with Tepper, Carolina is in the drivers seat.

negotiation and I'm not sure we have someone to do that although Carsterio standing firm on Cooks trade was impressive.

perhaps CAL knows he is going different direction and chose to zoom only? We don't know all if any of what is actually going on.

Cal vs A couple of Stanford MBAs who have been extremely successful in the business world, 1 who is a Walmart heir, plus Condi Rice. Then Payton flies cross country to meet with Tepper who paid Ruhle a kings ransom. Payton could win the NFC South in Carolina.
Who will be QB in Carolina?
