5. Adding adding new WR Tyler Johnson
The Texans have claimed WR Tyler Johnson off the waiver wire. Johnson, cut by the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, was a fifth-round draft pick in 2020. He recorded Johnson appeared in 31 regular season games and six postseason contests for the Bucs after being drafted in the fifth round in 2020. He had 48 catches for 529 yards and two touchdowns in the 31 regular season games. He also saw action in six postseason contests, recording seven catches for 76 yards.
"We don't really have a big commitment to him, but he has some size, has decent playing strength, he has decent run after catch, has decent hands," Caserio said. "When we get him here, we'll see what it looks like relative to the rest of the group. Again, it's about him taking advantage of an opportunity, and if it's good enough, he'll be around; if it's not, then we'll look for somebody else."

Losing Metchie hurt. But even if Metchie were healthy, this would be a bottom half WR group. This will take time. A lot of time.
I dont believe this.

Of course I believe in Cooks/Collins and the potential of Johnson (caught the game winning 1st down pass from Brady in the NFCCG a couple of yrs ago.) and Metchie (was the 3rd down RZ threat on a National Championship team)

The WR room has now taken shape:

Cooks - #1 WR can play inside/outside. Can create on his own and get open quickly. Not a superstar but a solid dependable player that defenses have to account for each week.

Collins - The big bodied jump ball option/posession WR. WR 2 need him to make a leap this season and show he can create separation consistently and be a threat defenses have to account for like Cooks.

Moore/Dorsett/Johnson - The reserves vying for the WR 3 role in the pecking order. All three can play slot WR. Dorsett is the best deep threat of the three and Johnson probably has the best play strength/most dependable over the middle of the field. Moore most versatile in that he can play every WR role, but at a JAG level.

I think Johnson will end up owning the WR 3/slot role sooner than later. He plays big and fights for the ball. Fearless over the middle of the field and those are attributes I want to see out of a WR particularly in 3rd down “gotta have it” situations.

2024 / Rebuilding Block 4 After Playoffs / Texans
Nico still not much of a factor in this offense. 12 of 15 games now where he’s had 3 or fewer catches in a game. 9 of 15 where he’s had 4 or fewer targets.
Cooks and Burkhead had 20 targets between them....Nico was targeted 3 times and brought it in twice. I'd like to see them diversify the targets a bit more so Mills doesn't become dependent on Cooks getting open and check down to Burkhead if he can't. I was pleasantly surprised with Moore and figured he should be getting more targets. I believe Howard could open the seam pass in the next few weeks and help the running game immensely.

I'm just going to leave this here... Deeply speculative based on tweets Brandin Cooks liked, but talk he's on the move before the trade deadline heating up.

I think if Cooks went to the Texans asking for a trade prior to the latest contract extension, the team would have considered it. The problems now are the $24 million in dead money the Texans would incur in a trade and the $18 million guaranteed contract in 2023 the team that trades for Cooks would have to accept.

The Texans have under $3 million in cap space. They would have to cut players on the roster in order to trade Cooks. These clowns on the radio never consider that when making these lame proposals.

Great post and insight.

Cooks trade rumors but lots of calls a fact to the Texans. He's got that new big contract possible hinderance but if a team really wants him and willing to trade some good stuff for example player and a high draft choice maybe ya neva kno.

The Packers and Rodgers are desperate right now. Their best receiver is hurt and could miss some time.

The Rams are in need of a receiver too.

They would have to restructure or extend his contract again

There is no way I would do that trade. Not enough value in it for the Texans, and definitely not to a division rival. Cooks and a high 6th round pick for their mid to low 5th and 6th? Nope. There are other teams that would give more.

Now, I would trade Cooks for the right price, and since there have been 5 teams reportedly interested in Cooks, maybe we can get a slight bidding war going for him, and maybe get a 3rd or better.

I like this, world class speed.

I could see Tyler Johnson, Moore and Dorsett as the starters and Tyron playing more as he learns the offense.

Aaron Wilson reports that Nico Collins (groin) injury "isn't regarded as long-term."
Collins left Week 7's game after pulling in three targets for 33 yards with the groin injury. While the Texans signed Tyron Johnson in a move that may signal some missed time for Collins, it sounds like he'll have a chance to come back this season. Whether that includes a stint on injured reserve or not is probably still up in the air. https://www.nbcsportsedge.com/football/nfl/teams/houston-texans

I think my baseline is a 2nd this year and a 2nd next year.

Start there and if it returns two thirds go for it.

But I wouldn’t go much lower than that.

Cooks is still a top receiver in the NFL at his age.

a 2nd for Cooks a few years ago? Sure. This year, I don't see it. Cooks hasn't played very well this season, so I don't really expect any more than a 4th, but would love a 2nd or 3rd. If we can get better than a 4th, I'm making the trade.
