NFL Random Thought of the Day

I'm agreeing with both of you completely..

College football has legislated a ton of unnecessary violence out of its game just like the nfl, liking one and not the other doesn't make much sense if 'pansyfication' is the reason..

Of course, one of these leagues has a scapegoat (Goodell) and the other doesn't, and we know how much a fan of tilting at scapegoats some folks can be..
The NFL outlawed the Oklahoma Drill" in the last couple years and I dunno is that still legal for some college programs ?
How about the "Forearm shiver" ? That was probably outlawed a long, long time ago ?

I believe that although there was talk about banning the Oklahoma Drill in college programs, it is still permitted in college football AND in high school football.

No one cares. It was made up from past stats and contracts to make up an hypotheses. It got more attention than it deserved.

You giggle like a school girl about someone bringing it up, but when someone asks you about the facts of the subject all of a sudden it doesn’t matter.

Typical.

Forearm shivers were used back when, commonly by olineman. But it isn't seen much anymore, partially because the defensive line doesn't stay put. They present a moving target and you have to be mobile to get your block. I've still seen LBs use the technique. I don't see that the move has been banned except when used to hit an opponents helmet/head.

This is Ndamukong Suh delivering a forearm shiver to Josh McCown, classically placing the legal forearm/elbow hit to the chest..............then he carries the strike upwards to the head...............which earned a personal foul.

I think things are changing because they recruited a bunch of 4-5 star ol-dl. Sark/Flood aren't playing around. Davis standing up on the bus lust yr and basically saying either get on board with what we're trying to do or you won't be here next yr was a game changing moment for the program and something the Horns have been missing for yrs.

I get that you're an OU fan, played there and bleed Boomer Sooner. I also get why your son would want to go there.

On another note, do you go to the red rivalry game/weekend? I went to the 45-42 Dicker the kicker game. Best live experience I've ever had at any game, college or pro. I have been to a couple of memorable high school games.

Both fanbases were awesome in a back and forth game. Great fans on both sides. I particularly like the OU sucks chant. Lol. Anyways I'm thinking of going again this yr for my birthday. Are you going? Let's catch up with each other if you're going.
I'm not an OU fan. I had a couple of my classmates play ball there and they're recruiting my son as well as the other power 5 schools. I'm just saying that Vernnables is about business, all business. I've know Sark for awhile, he's a good dude, kinda odd, but a good dude. My son likes both, we're going to LSU on the 10. Phone has been going off since 1201 on 9.1 trying to get him in. I'm just along for the ride. Going to Cal Berkley soon.

This article is about Belichick and the Patriots. But you could easily extrapolate it to Lovie, Pep and the Texans. So far, the flavor of the day has been vanilla. Every fan is hoping for some pleasant surprise flavors on opening day.

Bill Belichick embraces the “$64,000 question” of opening day
Posted by Mike Florio on September 4, 2022, 4:38 PM EDT

We know that the Patriots will go to Miami five days before they face Dolphins. The Patriots won’t know what they’re getting from the Dolphins until the game starts.

That seems to be something New England coach Bill Belichick relishes.

“That’s the $64,000 question on everything,” Belichick told reporters on Sunday. “Opening day is opening day. Nobody is really showing much in preseason. The cards will be on the table on Sunday. Like every opening game, I’m sure we’ll have to make some adjustments. Once we see what they’re doing and vice versa. That’s always the way it is.

“So you have to leave room for a little bit of the unknown, things that they’ve been working on that they haven’t shown. Or things specifically game-planned for you that you’ve had trouble with at some point. They’ve had a lot of time to prepare for the game, several months, as have we. So there’s a big part of the unknown. I think all of that will clear up in the first two to three weeks of the season when teams settle into their style of play that they want to bank on. But right now that’s not necessarily known. Again, league-wide for playing time for a lot of the key players on every team is low, so it’s hard to tell how some of their players are going to be used but we know guys that they’re going to feature. We’ll have to see how it goes.”

Of course, the Dolphins will be dealing with the same challenge, as Belichick prepares to unleash whatever he’s got cooked up for Miami and the other teams on the schedule.

“I think there’s always an excitement for opening day and to get the season started,” Belichick said. “That brings a lot of different things into the conversation. It’s really just taking all the work that you’ve done in the offseason and training camp, as players, as a staff, everybody involved and now focusing on a single opponent, whatever that actually means. So you just direct it there and that rolls into a lot of different aspects, but it’s just to have a high performance on the one time a week we get an opportunity to compete and that’s what we’re all going to shoot to do. So I think we’re all ready for that opportunity and excited to have it be pretty close to being here. No different than any other year. There’s a training time period and then there’s a competition time period, and we’re heading into the competition time period. So it changes things a little bit in a good way.”

It changes things a lot in a great way for fans. Patriots at Dolphins is just one of nine games that will start next Sunday at 1:00 p.m. ET, when football is back with an explosion of excitement and activity.

Then, three hours later, fans of nine of those teams will be thrilled — and fans of the other nine teams will be upset.

Brian Flores Calls NFL Agreements “Unconscionable” & Roger Goodell Biased in Latest Court Filings Fighting Arbitration

Lawyers for Brian Flores filed papers in Manhattan federal court Wednesday, opposing the NFL’s attempt to move the former Miami Dolphins coach’s lawsuit against the NFL into arbitration. Flores, who is suing the league in a proposed class action suit, called the arbitration agreements he signed with the NFL “unconscionable” and Roger Goodell “obviously biased.” He also says that his claims against the Broncos, Giants, Texans and Dolphins are not covered by, and therefore outside of the scope of the arbitration agreement.

Flores and several other Black NFL coaches, including Panthers’ defensive passing game coordinator Steve Wilks and former defensive coordinator Ray Horton, are alleging racial bias by the league and singled out commissioner Roger Goodell in their latest arguments.

The lawyers representing Flores told the judge that the NFL is running an “unconscionably biased one-sided ‘kangaroo courts'” that could never fairly decide Flores’ dispute. They specifically said there was no way Goodell could be fair in overseeing and ruling on the dispute, which alleges that the league he governs engaged in systemic discrimination.

Goodell earns hundreds of millions of dollars from teams and has publicly stated that Flores’ suit is without merit, according to his lawyers. They also stated that Goodell’s salary, loyalty to team owners and the fact that he could be a witness in the case, all disqualify him from overseeing an arbitration. Flores wants his case to remain in court and be heard by a jury.

Flores was fired in January after serving as the Dolphins’ head coach. Flores filed a lawsuit soon after, alleging that he was fired due to discriminatory practices targeting not only him but other non-white coaches. He is now an assistant coach with the Pittsburgh Steelers as his case makes its way through the court system.

Back in June, lawyers for the NFL argued that the case should be kicked out of court because the coaches agreed in their contracts to bring their disputes with teams to arbitration.

Flores’ attorneys warned in their filings that allowing the case to go to arbitration, would “embolden employers to create manifestly unfair arbitrations with assurance that they will be approved by the courts.”

“If the Court compels arbitration, scores of employers following this case, and those who learn of it, will undoubtedly change their arbitration clauses to permit the appointment of an obviously biased decision-maker,” the lawyers said.

Several weeks ago, U.S. District Judge Valerie Caproni denied a request by Flores’ lawyers to gather evidence from the NFL through further discovery in order to argue that the case should not be forced into arbitration.

A ruling is expected soon.

Good news.

How many people have been hurt really badly because of the Oklahoma drill?

Wilson, who sustained a right knee bone bruise and meniscus tear, had arthroscopic trim of the his meniscus on the knee on Aug. 16 and hasn’t suited up for a practice since. Originally, he was expected to miss 2-4 weeks, a seemingly overoptimistic outlook. Today marks 3 weeks. Remember, this is the same knee that Wilson missed 4 weeks for a Grade II PCL tear. Saleh is pushing hard to get Wilson to play week 1. One week of back to practice before throwing him back into play would not be a smart move. If he tries to start, I don't see him lasting.......hopefully not for another injury.

@CloakNNNdagger

It's a well-known fact that turf is very much associated with higher numbers of lower extremity injuries. Turf is much denser than natural grass and therefore affords greater traction which can be advantageous to many players. However, turf's advantage in that context is more than countered by the fact that it encourages feet to get caught it in...............with any twisting, sudden acceleration or deceleration, change of direction.........bad things happen to the ankles, knees, hips and back.

But many owners are going to promote turf because it is immensely cheaper to install, maintain and replace. Too many of the grass fields are not maintained properly due to frequent maintenence costs. Owners are not able to entertain very many additional events (high school and college games, concerts, ets) unless they ignore grass conditions or shovel a great deal of additional monies into maintenance and replacement. It is self-evident that too many of the grass fields demonstrate less than acceptable upkeep.

i wonder what the cost for properly maintained natural grass would be for a team like the Texans @ Reliant

are we talking greater than $10mil annually?

*according to this article from 2015
it cost the Texans $50k/yr to maintain a grass field @ Reliant...that sounds awfully low

Britt Reid scheduled to plead guilty to DWI charge
Posted by Josh Alper on September 6, 2022, 5:03 PM EDT

Former Chiefs assistant coach Britt Reid is set to plead guilty to driving while intoxicated to resolve a charge he faces as a result of a January 2021 car crash that severely injured a young girl.

Glenn E. Rice of the Kansas City Star reports that a court entry shows that Reid, who is the son of Chiefs head coach Andy Reid, is scheduled to enter the plea on Monday. His trial was slated to begin on September 26.

Reid struck two vehicles on a highway entrance ramp and left Ariel Young, who was five at the time, with a traumatic brain injury. Prosecutors say he had a blood alcohol content of 0.113 at the time of the crash.

“The five victims of this crime are relieved that the defendant has chosen to plead guilty and are hopeful that the defendant receives the maximum sentence allowed by law,” Tom Porto, an attorney for the victims, said.
Reid faces up to seven years in prison. The Chiefs reached an agreement with Young’s family last year to provide her with medical care and long-term financial stability.

It should be little wonder how Andy Reid's son has turned out if one knows anything about the family history.

Broncos coach Nathaniel Hackett told reporters on today that Denver will use maximum fake crowd noise at practice in order to get ready for the "disruption" to come on Monday night in Seattle.

How do you twist the knife 50 years later?

That's genius.
For those not aware of the irony of the situation that was not accidentally foreseen by the NFL in their scheduling............

Fifty years after Franco Harris scored one of the greatest touchdowns in football history, the Steelers will retire his number.

The Steelers announced today that Harris’s No. 32 jersey will be retired at halftime of their home game against the Raiders on December 24. That will be 50 years and one day after Harris scored that great touchdown, immortalized as the Immaculate Reception, to beat the Raiders in the 1972 playoffs.

Harris’s No. 32 will be just the third number retired by the Steelers, following Ernie Stautner’s No. 70 and Mean Joe Greene’s No. 75.

In that 1972 playoff game, the Steelers trailed in the closing seconds before Pittsburgh quarterback Terry Bradshaw launched a pass toward John “Frenchy” Fuqua. The ball bounced off either Fuqua or Raiders safety Jack Tatum — replays are inconclusive — before Harris scooped it up and ran for the game-winning touchdown.

The Raiders argued that the ball last touched Fuqua, and the rules of the time would have made it an incomplete pass when Harris touched it, as two consecutive offensive players couldn’t touch a forward pass. The Raiders also argued that the ball touched the ground before Harris caught it and should have been incomplete. But the officials sided with the Steelers on both counts, making it one of the most controversial plays in NFL history.

The NFL scheduled the Steelers-Raiders game knowing it was the 50th anniversary of that controversy, and Harris’s retirement ceremony will only add to the significance of that Week 16 game.

Blood clots are a complication of long COVID as well, as I understand. Sucks to die so young.
So sorry when I heard. He was from Houston and graduated from Willowridge High in 1982. When he was still with the 49ers, he was inducted into the Willowridge Wall of Honor and brought an autographed Alex Smith jersey for the silent auction. It is on the wall in my sports memorabilia room. RIP

Why did it take them 50 years to retire his number? That's a long time.. He could've passed without ever seeing the honor. He was one of the main pieces that created "Steelers football". Doesn't make sense to me.

However since they did wait 50 years.. what a date/opponent to do it on.Those old Steeler and Radier players genuinely hated each other.. apparently they still do. 🙂

brought this quote from Kirk Douglas to mind
“The biggest spur to my interest in art came when I played van Gogh in the biographical film Lust For Life. The role affected me deeply. I was haunted by this talented genius who took his own life, thinking he was a failure. How terrible to paint pictures and feel that no one wants them. How awful it would be to write music that no one wants to hear. Books that no one wants to read. And how would you like to be an actor with no part to play, and no audience to watch you. Poor Vincent—he wrestled with his soul in the wheat field of Auvers-sur-Oise, stacks of his unsold paintings collecting dust in his brother's house. It was all too much for him, and he pulled the trigger and ended it all. My heart ached for van Gogh the afternoon that I played that scene. As I write this, I look up at a poster of his "Irises"—a poster from the Getty Museum. It's a beautiful piece of art with one white iris sticking up among a field of blue ones. They paid a fortune for it, reportedly $53 million. And poor Vincent, in his lifetime, sold only one painting for 400 francs or $80 dollars today. This is what stimulated my interest in buying works of art from living artists. I want them to know while they are alive that I enjoy their paintings hanging on my walls, or their sculptures decorating my garden”

Report: NFL will “absolutely” consider taking over discipline for misconduct in joint practices
Posted by Mike Florio on September 6, 2022, 7:18 PM EDT

In two days, Rams defensive tackle Aaron Donald will play in a regular-season game two weeks after swinging helmets in a joint practice because, under current rules, the NFL can’t do anything about it.
That could change.

Mark Maske of the Washington Post reports that the league office will “absolutely” consider taking jurisdiction over discipline of players who engage in misconduct during joint practices. The league would implement the same system currently used for on-field discipline during games.

An unnamed source tells Maske that the issue is “already on the winter agenda,” a reference to the annual wave of offseason rule changes.

The potential change is indeed sparked by Donald’s behavior. The Rams handled the matter internally, and they’ve refused to disclose the punishment. (A moderately stern talking-to is a safe bet, possibly with the partial wag of a finger.)

It’s the right move, but it won’t be easy. The NFL Players Association undoubtedly will regard any such change as a mandatory subject of collective bargaining. While the NFLPA should want to ensure that its members are properly protected against misdeeds that go unpunished (and thus undeterred), the union can do exactly what the league would do in a situation like this — fold their arms and say, “What’s in it for us?”

Hopefully, that won’t happen in this case. Or maybe the league can find some other win-win that can be dangled as the quid pro quo for giving the league the ability to do what should have been done after Donald swung helmets on August 25.

Then again, if Donald knew he would potentially be suspended for doing it, maybe he wouldn’t have done it. That makes it all the more critical for the NFL and NFLPA to agree to this much-needed change.

Do you believe it's just total random chance that the Raiders and Steelers are scheduled to play that week?

If one of them had finished in a different place in their divisions they wouldn't be playing at all this season, much less that week..

schedule wasn't made before this season... I'm not saying they manipulated the schedule to arrange the week 16 meeting, but it's not out of the realm of possibility that they took advantage of the chance

jj Watt has not practiced since last week. He has suffered a calf tear and has be said to be day-to-day.This is essentially after missing preseason with COVID test. As predicted, with his injury history, he is unlikely to stay healthy anymore.
