Texans 2022 Free Agency Thread

MARCH 16 TEXANS ADD OL DEPTH The Houston Texans added some additional offensive line depth on Wednesday evening, signing offensive guard Scott Quessenberry on a one-year deal.

Quessenberry, the younger brother of Texans fullback Paul Quessenberry and former Texans offensive lineman David Quessenberry, played last season with the Los Angeles Chargers.

Quessenberry came to the league as a fifth round pick by the Chargers out of UCLA in 2018.

That is not what was said. They’re all doing their jobs. And Caserio the GM is doing his job.

Again let it go Steel

I'm going to keep pointing this out, because if true and Texian said Lovie used those words. I dont know if this is true or not. But if true the success or failure falls on the guy that makes the final calls. If that's Lovie then so be it.

For instance I'm pretty sure Lovie decided to keep Murray around and not cut him. Cap space lost for a replacement level player. IMHO

If they wanna keep him fine (don't start him please) but 10m sounds like 4-5m to much.
Not a fan, but it's 2 years $10M, so it's only $5M/yr. Halfof hat Teid is getting in KC.

But more than Desmond King, which doesn't make sense

Remember the salary cap that won't be important until 2023?

Agreed,

But it looks like they are tanking.

Running back a 4-13 team unfortunately speaks volumes.

I would've thought they might have tried to upgrade the talent level a little bit with different cheap fa's instead of running it back. You can't find new talent like Caserio did last year operating this way. I was hoping for 2-3 cheap fa finds. I guess the bright side is it's still early in fa.

Without those FA dollars (that he wasted) we couldn't expect more.

He brought a bunch of guys last year on one year deals. He's bringing back the ones who can play & fit the culture.

Desmond King, you wanted him back right? Malik Collins, you wanted him back?

Who did they resign that you didn't want?

Surely you have to expect one or two guys you particularly didn't like.

Besides... he's got to fill out that 90 man roster, create competition& some of the guys we don't like may not make it through this time.

The big one is Pharaoh Brown.

I

I've mentioned a few names before. There are some good young runners available in the free agency who will be cheap for 2 years. Both of TB backs as well as Foreman who was here before. The Texans can probably get those guys for 2 yrs at 4m per year and you still can draft a young back. Buckhead can be your 3rd down / fill in dude.

I’d absolutely add RB’s, Leonard Fournette (TB) and Kareem Hunt (Browns) to the list of guys to pursue this off-season. Both should be very affordable. With that said, I’d still draft RB, Breece Hall (Iowa State / 5-11 @ 217 lbs) since it’s not often you get a RB with his speed (4.39-40), ability to catch out of the backfield, and overall CFB production.

Why? Because of the penalties? This is fixable. In last years training camp, Brown showed a lot of promise as a big three downer who could block as well as catch. He fell off during the season and had the problem with the penalties. But Pep and the coaching staff must have seen enough in their evaluation to give him another chance. Pep's offense requires this kind of TE and we'll likely draft one as well. If we trade with Atlanta, we'll try to get Pitts but Atlanta may not give him up. This is a good signing.

like I said, with the salary cap situation Caserio crafted, we’re limited to the available players we know fit the culture & can play.

The Texans are going to sign one or two players we don’t like. Pharaoh Brown in particular is on another one year deal where the others are signed to two year deals, so Nick knows.

Hopefully they can find a better option & Pharaoh doesn’t make it out of camp.

Are you ok with the run it back philosophy and if so why?

Don't know how many former Texans have been signed yet
The Texans have lost 3 FAs that would qualify for compensatory picks.

Reid - KC - 5th round compensation
Taylor - NYG - 6th
Martin - NYJ - 7th

They have signed 2 FAs that would qualify for compensatory picks.

Stewart - 7th
Cann - 7th

The Texans would be +1 in FAs lost, and eligible for a 5th round pick. As of now.

No. I'm not. That's why I & several others have been saying Nick has been too fast & loose with his future FA dollars.

You keep saying cap space don't mean anything until 2023. Right now, we're seeing that's not exactly true. It's affecting the team now.

they can’t really do much in FA until DW4 is traded and his money is off the books. Aside from that, the haul they’re looking to get from the trade in terms of draft picks and players could potentially offset any big money FA signing. IOW’s The big time FA signing we all are clamoring for likely won’t come via FA, but rather in the DW4 trade.

Factor to consider with all these lower level, contracts/players Nick has signed, two years in a row is he would have to pay premium contracts for players to come here. On flip side is Jacksonville. They are overspending to field better free agents, paying out the nose. It’s just good business to spend fair value even if it hurts now, will payoff in the future.

Speaking of the future, the draft is where it’s at for Texans and Caserio. Should have a butt load of top 100 picks this year and next. That’s what we can look forward too:wesmantexanfan:

and "better" here means Jacksonville is signing average to maybe good players for full all-star level pricing in multiple cases.

We hope. So far he hasn’t compromised the future cap. & should be freeing up a shton as soon as they trade Watson. Hopefully he doesn’t spend it all too freely this season & he can carry something over next season & really be aggressive from jump.

What I said is true.

How the fa money is being spent is in question. It's like they're expecting a different result with the same players plus added draft capital. What I want to know is what changed in the philosophy of trying to find a couple of unknown gems in fa like Caserio did last year?

You act as if they've re-signed every single FA from last season.
As far as I know, they've only signed a small percentage of a fairly large group.
Feels like you're premature on the run it back angle to me.

Cann is the only new guy they've brought in. That's very different than what Caserio did last yr. It's early in fa so I hope I'm being premature.

I might be wrong but I feel like he's waiting for the Watson situation to finalize before making any significant moves.
And by significant, I mean starter level free agents.
I'm not expecting any major splashes this year, which I'm sure is an opinion most of us share.

I already spent his cap savings if cut $5.4 m. If he is worth this deal we could have traded for a round 6 and saved the same. This is on you Lovie.

edit: spotrac three year 20.25 m and 10.75 GTD

That's not the way things are trending here.

Lovie humpers will give him credit for any/all successes and Caserio will be their scapegoat for any/all failures.

Gonna be a fun year here.

I :user: at the Lovie fans.

:coffee:

Eric Murray is the only guy I don't like that they brought back. I do expect them to bring in more guys like KGH (I'm disappointed he hasn't been brought back yet). They're going to bring another 20 guys in.

Hopefully you're right.

That's all I'm looking for is starter level upgrades.

.Brown is the kind of player that's just good enough to make you lose. If they couldn't fix what was wrong with him in his first 3 years in the league I doubt these problems will be fixed next year.

He's only had one good year... his first here.

The second year, maybe he got to full of himself & Culley/Kelly were trying to fix that character flaw... & the constant losing... & the Watson drama.... & suspending good players for no reason.... & trading the few productive players we had...

He's getting another "prove it" year from Nick. Maybe Nick knows a lot of his faults weren't all his fault.
