Head Coach Candidate (Lovie Smith Hired) 2/7/22

What's funny, whether right or wrong. The appearance will be that they only hired Lovie because they didn't want the backlash from hiring McCown. So, instead of getting kudos for hiring a minority candidate or for Cal not listening to Easterby or even getting draft picks from an external candidate.....They will still get ridicule for their hiring process and dysfunction.

They were never going to get kudos no matter what they did. For whatever reason the national media either ignores or hates the Texans. I don't care myself but if they do anything expecting kudos they will always be disappointed.

For head coach? In the NFL?
You didn't specify HC in your comment I responded to. And you know the answer, you're just trolling. He was offered positions as a position coach on at least two occasions and yes NFL. From Lovie's just concluded interview, he's open to McCown coming on board in some capacity. Said he's known McCown for years since the two were with the Bucs in 2014.

Also in the press conference:

Lovie said he will be calling the defense. Not sure if that means he’ll hire a DC (Mcvay and Shanahan call offense plays and have OCs for example). But Lovie will be the defensive playcaller as HC.
i always think it’s a situation where you can hire a top position coach away from another team by promoting them under a coordinating HC.

Which is why they need to sell the team.

Are they running a NFL org or a Sunday School experiment?
A baptistry. No coaches or players can be signed to a Texans contract until after they have been baptized by the Preacher Man.

It is the Preacher Man's job to make sure that no more weenie wiggling perverts become a member of the Houston Texans. Janice has spoken!

Lol. The flare for dramatics are awesome.

Lovie looked sharp at the press conference. Caserio looked like a guy I wouldn’t want to meet on a car lot because it would mean I was in the “cash only” section.

Best of luck to Lovie. He will need it.

I am sure he will be praying more for patience in dealing with people more this year than any other year.

I think lovey's defense in 2021 was 31 out of 32? Is that not bad no matter what the reason? What players in the offseason are going to make us much better?

The 1 year Matt LaFluer was the OC for the Titans they were 30th in total offense. Mike Vrabel's defense the 1 year when he was DC here wasn't much better....

Was there any info on whom Gannon wanted as his defensive coordinator?

The 1st 1 of your boys that gets on brings everyone up with him a notch; that's how it typically works. So it was likely gonna be some young kid none of us have heard of.

Does HC Vrabel act as his own DC in Nashville ?

Don't think so but im sure he has heavy say in the gameplanning and strategy. All these guys do with their respective sides of the ball. Actually calling the plays is just a formality really.

I'm trolling you? What jobs were McCown offered? For what roles? Do you have links?

BTW, McCown was a backup QB on Lovie's 2011 Bears team. Prior to their stint in Tampa.

Right. When I was fact checking I saw McCown was on the 49ers' practice squad in 2011. I overlooked the following line showing Chicago had signed him off the PS in 2011.

Dammmmmittt!!!! Include the wearing of Easterby approved, “Texans Purity Rings” in each and every players contract.

I'm a big DeMeco fan myself so asked this same question in another thread when SteelB reminded me that Texans ownership was the defendant in a lawsuit involving DEMeco who sued them alleging their NRG turf was a factor in his lesfrac injury.

Dang, Forgot about that.

It’s like all of our star players leave with a bad taste in their mouth and sour words about the team.

Well, except Cushing since they stood by him during his pregnancy. Heard he’s due any day now.

what in the hell does Janice know about football? Like seriously, other than the bank account what do any of the McNairs know about football. Suddenly they are qualified to hire GM’s and coaches because of the size of their bank account?

This is the inherent nature of pro sports teams oligarchies. Get us working class suckers to pay for their playgrounds so they, and their prima donna entertainer players, can rake in collective billions.

well that’s in essence what happened after he promoted BoB to GM… Like I’ve said, all these owners do it, fans just want what they want when they want it….

Fans just want a winning team. The problem is that dysfunctional organizations rarely produce it.

You have it all backwards. Belichick, the Head Coach, had Caserio on the headset (in the booth) during games as a resource. And guess what, it worked great for them.

Belichick had Ernie Adams to give him situational information on the headset.

Caserio wore one in NE to listen, but never to speak.

"Caserio was also noted to have been on headsets during his time in New England. While he didn't have input, Bill Belichick found him important to their operation enough to have him listening in on things."

From Easterby's bio on Houstontexans.com.

How can you bring people into the organization without clearing them with the guy who directs the culture of the organization? And some believe that Easterby has no influence? Please.

Yep. There is a specific reason why that job description is on the official Houston Texans website. Acting like his role is meaningless and without influence is just an exercise in delusion. To what extent is anyone's guess, but I don't think he has anything valuable to offer a football operation and he is nothing but a snake oil salesman to be close to money and perceived power.

I get what you're saying..i really do................... but the entitled & often times obnoxious behavior of fans isn't just limited to dyfunctional organizations..even the winning ones deal with the nonsense. Every fan & talking head knows what should've been done or called in this critical moment of a tense game...every fan thinks they know who should've been drafted and of course every fan knows who should be hired/fired and who should do what on a professional sports team. Its annoying...& one of the reasons i've never been to keen on the in-game experience...the idiot factor is high in the stadium on game days.

Seems as if its gotten worse due to this "hot take" society we live in these days.

Semantics really...its verified that the dude was on the headset for the better part of 20 years. Are you really suggesting in that time he never said anything on the headsets that contributed to winning games for them? I find that about as hard to believe as you do that Easterby might be offering something valuable to a football operation.

At the end of the day, i'm just glad the whole HC search thing is over.......Now if we could just get this Watson **** finished, maybe this board could tone down some.

Your source is wrong. He was doing more than “just listening. “

“Nick Caserio’s been talking to me for the better part of 10 years,” McDaniels said. “He tells me where the ball’s at, what hash it’s on, what’s the down and distance. He’ll say, ‘Left hash, second and 7 at the 33.’ Then sometimes I’ll call the personnel, then he’ll say, ‘Hey, they subbed nickel in.’ He’ll continue to communicate with me until the end.”

Ya, he’s a tool. Just thought I’d post it. You know :stirpot: just a bit! Lol
The presser I posted above, Easterby wasn’t acknowledged at all. If he truly was involved, they would’ve brought him up don’t you think.

Especially because Easterby is a massive gloryhound. I too, don't think he has the influence that others here do, but he clearly loves the attention and the spotlight.

Hey man I'm willing to admit I'm wrong. Being a fan I hoped times were changing. Calhoun is nothing but a worse version of his daddy. Must be some of the best inbreds the South Carolina has to offer.

This franchise has had way to many of the South Carolina trash from ownership down for far to long. Time to clear the decks.

You want to compare Lovie to Vrabel for 2022? What can we do to accomplish that? *Warning you must reply in off season thread on trades/draft or mod will relocate. I am interested in your thoughts.

Depends what metrics you're using. 23rd in DVOA, which is an improvement of 7 spots from the year before. Progress!

TBH, the defense played better than I expected.
played better than I expected also but not sure if Lovie gets credit and that is not much of a hope to cling to. "I didn't get beat up as bad as I thought by neighbor bully." A weak yay.

I'm not a prisoner of the moment type, but hearing Lovie presser today, I feel better. They gotta get the qb situation corrected. Maybe Mills will take huge step, but the AFC has great arms and talent ,not ok talent. Defensively, they will be better sooner rather than later, but it wont be enough even in the next 2 years.

Help me understand exactly what you’re upset with about the situation, please.

Are you upset Nick didn’t get to hire McCown because of the Flores thing?

or are you upset because Nick didn’t get to hire his 2nd choice who wasn’t going to give Nick the control he wanted?

Or, are you upset because Lovie Smith is our HC?

This may be accurate only if you are talking this year. But McCown had several offers of coaching jobs previously. He is a local boy, attended Sam Houston and when he begins sending out his resume, he will be getting interest from other teams, and there is no reason to say this wouldn't include the Texans.
I agree that there would be no talk of McCown without Easterby. I have no doubt that McCown could get a coaching position with any number of teams today - and that's exactly what he should pursue if he is serious about being a head coach someday. But only one team is stupid enough to seriously consider him as head coaching material without any experience. He has 4 children, 2 of which are teenage sons who play football for Rusk High School. The eldest son will soon be a Freshman QB at Colorado while the younger is a WR for Rusk. I highly doubt that McCown is serious enough about coaching to miss both of his sons glory days. I know I wouldn't.
Prove me wrong Josh.

I liked his presser, I like the staff he’s putting together. As of now, he’s +1

I liked it too.

One thing I heard that was interesting was about the opportunity for black coaches in the NFL. Lovie was thankful that the Texans organization recognized a problem and attempted to fix it. Says a lot about the Texans.

He was thankful to Mrs. McNair and Hannah too.

I sure have been hearing Hannah’s name a lot.

Clemson trash. Now South Carolina trash. You don’t stray too far.

Cal stepped in and righted the ship.

You should count your lucky stars.

You may not agree with the process on how they got there.

But they came to a better choice.

Not many coaches will come here to have their coaching staff dictated.

You are seeing that now.

Don’t matter. McCown or maybe Pep will be the coach in waiting when Lovie retires.
