Head Coach Candidate (Lovie Smith Hired) 2/7/22

At least Lovie has coaching experience (over 40 years).

--High School--
Big Sandy HS (TX) (1980) Defensive coordinator
Cascia Hall Prep (OK) (1981–1982) Assistant defensive backs coach & wide receivers coach

--College--
Tulsa (1983–1986) Linebackers coach
Wisconsin (1987) Linebackers coach
Arizona State (1988–1991) Linebackers coach
Kentucky (1992) Linebackers coach
Tennessee (1993–1994) Defensive backs coach
Ohio State (1995) Defensive backs coach

--NFL--
Tampa Bay Buccaneers (1996–2000) Linebackers coach
St. Louis Rams (2001–2003) Defensive coordinator
Chicago Bears (2004–2012) Head coach
Tampa Bay Buccaneers (2014–2015) Head coach

--College Again--
Illinois (2016–2020) Head coach

--NFL--
Houston Texans (2021) Associate head coach & defensive coordinator
Houston Texans (2022–present) Head coach

Personally I wanted an experienced defensive coach as our HC so Lovie checks that box for me. Hopefully he gets a qualified OC & lets him run the offense while everybody else lets the coaches coach. After 40 years he has to be hungry for a championship.

You obviously have not read my post concerning this. Gannon wanted to choose his own staff, especially DC........Cal wanted Lovie to be retained.............Nick was overruled.............Gannon walked.
Gannon was a "finalist" after two interviews. This staffing snafu was a major deal and should have been brought up and worked out in the second interview. Never should have been announced as a finalist.

Super Bowl Odds at Caesars for 2023 last week: Texans bet $100, win $20,000. Same @ Circa in downtown LV. If you like our chances, betting $1,000 will win you $200,000. If you bet 1K at Fanduel as of 4 days ago, you'll only win $180,000. Make sure you get your best deal. Good luck to all.
I wouldn't take that if the one bet covered the Texans chances for the next 5 years.

My thoughts on Texans coaching staff;
Lovie was not my ideal HC choice but I have more confidence in him not to make stupid decisions than I have in any Texans HC coach of the last 8 years. He is well respected throughout the NFL and will help bring respectability to this organization. He is a players coach that could help attract free agents.
I'm not a proponent of the GM dictating coaching staff positions but I do like that Pep is OC and Frank Ross was retained as Special Teams Coordinator. I believe that whoever is DC will run some form of Lovie's defense and will be in step with his approach - I'm OK if that is Miles Smith (I wouldn't be surprised if that is the concession NC made for Lovie to agree to be HC).
I would hope that Josh McCown is offered and accepts a QB coach position. I think he would be a great mentor for Davis Mills. However, if he rejects such an offer I never want to hear his name mentioned again with the Texans (his HC consideration stinks of Easterby).

I’m starting to get a vibe that rather than stepping up to a full GM role out of Bellichicks shadow, Caserio is actually positioning himself in the Bellichick role.

Serious candidates have turned away from having him managing the coaching staff, headset on and active on game day.
You have it all backwards. Belichick, the Head Coach, had Caserio on the headset (in the booth) during games as a resource. And guess what, it worked great for them.

I’ve got a feeling that Pep Hamilton decided to stay with the Texans under the framework that he would be the OC and would get to install his offense.

Now in a couple of years when the roster is up to competing for something (hopefully) and we’re in the HC search again, I want someone with experience, someone who has put the time in and earned his dues and is rising through the ranks. Whether that’s Gannon, DeMeco, Lombardi, or whoever the hot prospects are in a year or 2, I don’t care. Just enough of the damn drama bullshit the Texans do when they do a freaking search.

Sorry to keep pounding this drum but I want you to be prepared for it.

In a few years there will a fake Coach search to just promote McCown to HC. If McCown makes it on Lovie’s staff. For sure if Easterby is still here.

Doc said Cal wanted to keep Lovie. Maybe it wasn’t until Cal found out that Gannon wanted his own DC that he (Cal) then decided to keep Lovie. Undermining Nicks desire to hire Gannon.
Man, who the heck knows anymore.

The way this played out with the complete reversal Sunday night followed by an immediate decision to hire Lovie stinks to high heaven of McNair exerting himself into the decision.

Hey Porky, Is he not building the team the way he wants to build it? Lovie is a great teacher for the young defensive guys to learn from. At this point and for the next couple of yrs the teaching aspect of the job is the most important part of Lovie's job.

who is he?If you are talking about Nick I would say no. Cal? Nope? The Preacher? Hell no.

Not as often as Cal has in his short time as owner. If you don't trust who you hired to do the job then fire him, but don't keep undermining him and then let him take the blame for the problems you created.

how dare you question the great and powerful Cal.

Nick, but Calhoun lied since that post was made. Caserio is in charge of the draft/fa but not the coaching hires. (According to CnD) So he's not really over football oops.

At times, I know the fans and media can go overboard. But based on what you have heard and/or seen, are the concerns about Easterby's influence in NRG justified?
Easterby is no longer an overt factor in significant GM and coach decisions...............but it's not due of lack of trying. It's like that pesky mosquito that buzzes your ear every night and doesn't bite you, but keeps you up all night, while you hope it goes away before it does eventually bite you some night.

What's funny, whether right or wrong. The appearance will be that they only hired Lovie because they didn't want the backlash from hiring McCown. So, instead of getting kudos for hiring a minority candidate or for Cal not listening to Easterby or even getting draft picks from an external candidate.....They will still get ridicule for their hiring process and dysfunction.

It's already happening. I haven't read them, but I've seen several headlines already.

Depending on how sucessful Pep's offense is, it's more likely he will be the first consideration as the HC.

Pep’s offense has to turn Mills into a top 10 QB in the league. Plus have a great running game. Top tier offense.

Otherwise I disagree. They are focused on McCown. He was almost the guy this year. Pep will be allowed to move on.

I don’t know what Pep’s beliefs are but since he didn’t meet up with Easterby at a religious retreat he may not fit the culture that Easterby wants. (This isn’t sarcasm.)

However - Cal likes to call an audible every now and then. Anything can happen.

You know as soon as they fire Lovie we'll be right back at hiring Josh McCown again
Maybe McCown won't want to be a part of this organization by then.
I wouldn't take that if the one bet covered the Texans chances for the next 5 years.
200-1? If the Texans draft the clones of Jim Brown, Jerry Rice, and Lawrence Taylor in April....I might consider it.

I'm just not buying this. There would be no McCown talk without Jack. I would bet that the Hines Ward idea came from Jack. As long as Jack is here and the Texans are doing stupid things, I'll believe he's a major influence.

I'm guessing Pep will have control of the offense picks and Lovie gets the defense.
If you want to believe NIck c. this is saved in my signature

Caserio on personnel decisions: Any personnel decisions to be made, will be made as a group. As it pertains to football decisions, those are ultimately my decisions in conjunction with the head coach.

This likely includes players you can trade for and players you can draft. They would've to get the Easterby seal of approval first. Cal and Janice demand it!

Got ya, but it still reinforces my point, kind of. None of those clowns are “aligned”.
Cal hired Nick to do a job. He was doing it and Cal cut him off at the knees wanting to keep Smith. So Cal was the one trying to ram the square peg into the round hole.
These guys are oblivious.

And I read all your posts Doc, my reading retention isn’t what it used to be.
100% agree.

I'd feel better about this situation if it was Caserio leading the campaign to hire the new HC. Instead it was Cal, the same guy that made O'Brien king. I'm not sure how anyone can feel comfortable with the McNair's making these types of decisions. But I know, there were probably even Lions fans that trusted Matt Millen and William Ford Sr. in 2001. Since then, the Lions have appeared in the playoffs three times, losing Wild Card games each time. Might we be entering a similar era of futility? Hate to say it, at this point I wouldn't be surprised. Cal is simply not a smart football man.

From Easterby's bio on Houstontexans.com.

Easterby manages all football operations and directs the overall culture of the organization.
How can you bring people into the organization without clearing them with the guy who directs the culture of the organization? And some believe that Easterby has no influence? Please.

So the person Cal who makes the final decisions is not responsible for the Texans doing stupid things. It's good to be king. :chef:

I had never read your signature. Too dim. I don't even remember Caserio saying that. Pep's fingerprints were all over the Mills pick.

The whole group thing has been my question...is that position coaches, head coach , gm, that guy with limited background and unclear, owner, players scouts. Knowing this I get into "whose pick it is" If he says group they all are responsible until they tell me who makes the group or that Nick c. ultimately says yes or no.

Easterby is more like a flaming anal fisher

Funny isn’t it how this board is ready to hang SB banners on some of these other candidates who I doubt seriously they even thought about until now. And I find it interesting how many current and past Lovie players ( Urlacher, Hester) are singing high praises for him. Pep stayed no doubt because he wanted to work for THIS organization. The sky ain’t falling. It’s getting brighter.

Why would Cal insist on keepin Lovie? You hired a GM to hire a HC. HC wants to have a DC he likes and trusts. Cal says no, Lovie stays. Why the hell you hire Nick then? Cal does not know how to run a football operation. No clue and he and the family never will as long as it makes money. They simply fo not care if they win or not.

Just reinforces the ol saying one old timers here put up…. A marketing team in a football division. (Paraphrasing)

This may be accurate only if you are talking this year. But McCown had several offers of coaching jobs previously. He is a local boy, attended Sam Houston and when he begins sending out his resume, he will be getting interest from other teams, and there is no reason to say this wouldn't include the Texans.
