Interesting to note:
Pep was Lovie’s QB coach for the Bears from 2007-2009. Main QBs were Rex Grossman, Kyle Orton and Jay Cutler (rookie).
Hopefully Davis Mills gives him a bit more to work with…

Agreed but that was foolish. DW was gone and they couldn’t get it thru their skulls he was checked out.Agreed, but Kelly was kept around to try to appease Derrick.
other random note: Josh McCown played for Lovie Smith Bears 2011-12, Buccaneers 2014
I guess I should've added the caveat that Kelly had to go. I thought Culley improved as the season went on and he never lost the team. They played hard for him. With Hamilton as OC and Smith still at DC, a HC who has a season of experience under his belt and a full slot of draft picks, with (hopefully) a boat load more coming once Watson is shipped off, the talent level and coaching staff would be much better. Why? A coach who neglects or flat out refuses to listen to help shouldn’t be a HC
And we have a winner!I’m thinking they were finding a way to justify McCown, they saw the feedback they were getting in combination with the Flores lawsuit alleging racism and the 2 went together and this was their solution.
I guess I have to see the Janice factor to believe in it.
The McNairs issue isnt that they are over bearing they trust to a fault. BoB then Easterby.what in the hell does Janice know about football? Like seriously, other than the bank account what do any of the McNairs know about football. Suddenly they are qualified to hire GM’s and coaches because of the size of their bank account?

Yup I want nothing to do with Flores and his drama queen act. Poor put upon millionaire. He has written his own obit Kapernick style.
I want the best HC possible and Lovie ain’t it. He is a nice guy but he’s Culley V2. Basically we went from a 76 Pinto on blocks to a 76 pinto with new tires and a paint job. It’s still a hunk of junk, just a hunk of junk rolling on new treads.
oh sure, they will try to put lipstick on this hog and roll him out like he is Ms America.
demand better fans! I can’t believe how many of you cave to this BS! They keep lowering the bar on Kirby and some of you have broken backs from doing the limbo. It’s freaking ridiculous what the fans here accept.
Hey atleast he will hold a playbook and make a game plan on one side of ball every Sunday.Yup I want nothing to do with Flores and his drama queen act. Poor put upon millionaire. He has written his own obit Kapernick style.

LMAO. I got one too. I have no idea what to dislike about mentioning that on 01/17, I posted that at the end of their search, Lovie would be the HC.I have officially been anointed! Texas penguin disliked a post!
figures you would say that. You practically leg hump the McNair’s and the garbage they roll out like an over-stimulated dog whose balls just dropped.
LMAO. I got one too. I have no idea what to dislike about my post on 01/17 predicting Lovie would be HC.
The Saints have hired Dennis Allen As HC. That makes Lovie the only true black HC chosen in this cycle.............unless you consider Mike McDaniel with a black father as at least a minority. The Texans are now being laughed at for being "forced" into their choice.
We're just a joke. Nothing against Lovie, but if you can't coach college, the NFL might be kind of tough. I don't think anybody any good wanted the job. Easterby has had his input in making us the worst team in pro football, but the owners are to blame. As far as most people saying Caserio was the best thing since sliced bread, maybe that was just the Hoodie. Just my 2 cents. My wife and I had season tickets from year 3 until last year. What a waste of money. Not crying crocodile tears, just very disappointed in the lack of business and common sense by the team.
Just like the Culley hire, Lovie's hire was strictly a Cal decision.......not Caserio's. Cal cannot take any responsibility for anything. He made sure that Caserio would be responsible for firing Culley, as he will now make Caserio responsible for any failure of Lovie's.
From my sources, I can now say for sure that Caserio wanted Gannon. But things didn't work out. Meanwhile, Easterby was pushing hard in Cal's ear for McCown who was also in favor of McCown, but was totally gunshy of the criticism the Texas would incur because of McCown's inexperience. When things didn't work out with Gannon defensive background coach (and I haven't yet confirmed this, but believe from some things I've heard that Cal insisted on Lovie being kept on as the DC), things went south then. When the Flores lawsuit was revealed, it put a monkey wrench into everything. No one felt comfortable with hiring Flores. Easterby was still pushing Cal hard to choose McCown. But Cal essentially ignored Caserio's advice to pump the brakes. Cal, as he did with Culley, bypassed Caserio's advice and went with the "safe hand"............Lovie.
This is not good when an owner repeatedly does a grab of his GM and HC decision making. At least Jerry Jones as the owner/GM usually takes responsibility and heat for his "interventions," whether they turn out good or bad.
I realize Lovie was 89-87 in the NFL but 17-39 ain't that good in college even if it is the Big 10. I got nothing against Lovie and I liked him as DC for us. However, his being picked as HC was complete BS. The ownership & FO is a bunch of idiots in my opinion.Might want to research Lovie’s Coaching career. He had far more success in the NFL than he did in college. Again college is all about recruiting, if your school can recruit the top athletes like Clemson or Alabama then you are going to dominate until you are against another top college. Then because you are a top college more top athletes want to go there so the rich get richer. It’s how colleges like Clemson, Bama and OU stay on top so long. If your college can’t get that top talent, like Illinois, Vince Lombardi himself couldn’t win.
Lovie wasn’t my choice because I wanted to keep him as DC but if it was a choice between making him HC or hiring a guy like Gannon who would want to bring his own DC in then I’ll take Lovie as DC. It’s why I wanted an offensive minded HC though so Lovie could have free reign with the defense. Oh well beggars and choosers.
Oh, I get that. That’s why I was surprised they fired Culley. It’s just the way the Texans go about it. They seem more concerned about how they’re going to spin things, than they are about rebuilding this football team.I mean, and admit the is cynical as f@+), but he's filling our coaching staff (durring a rebuild where we aren't expected to win) with a bunch Rooney Rule nominees.
This could be some 4D chess we are witnessing.
Maybe in the future bad teams will load up on black coaching talent for future 3rd round picks.

Cal McNair on hiring Lovie Smith: 'The last couple of seasons have been disappointing ..
Considering all the horseshit going on with the Texans, I'm happy with both Lovie and Pep getting promoted. As far as I'm concerned, a little continuity will probably be in Davis Mills interest.
Easterby was still pushing Cal hard to choose McCown. But Cal essentially ignored Caserio's advice to pump the brakes. Cal, as he did with Culley, bypassed Caserio's advice and went with the "safe hand"............Lovie.
The pastor shouldn't even be in the conversation. Just let your GM do his thingThe darn owner had to step in and I commend him for doing just that. He showed some freaking balls. It’s his freaking team and both Caserio and the Pastor could not get on the same darn page and make a decision.
That would make you a valued member of his waddle.I’ve only ever gotten likes from @TexasPenguin, so what does that make me?![]()
I’ve stated that several times over the past few weeks. But since he’s in the mix, him and Caserio couldn’t reach an agreement. Therefore, Cal stepped in like a boss. The pastor shouldn't even be in the conversation. Just let your GM do his thing
Were you hearing from your sources that Lovie was in the mix for the HC position?I’ve stated that several times over the past few weeks. But since he’s in the mix, him and Caserio could reach an agreement. Therefore, Cal stepped in like a boss.
Why do you think he's screwing up?
He's building the team the way he wants and then is going to add a younger HC. If McCown joins the staff that will be telling.
This is the primary reason fans want Easterby out of the building. The HC doesn't report to him. He should not be in this conversation. Who in their right mind would push for McCown to be a HC today? In this instance, Cal didn't listen to him. At some point, Cal will take his bad advice. The pastor shouldn't even be in the conversation. Just let your GM do his thing
I’ve already asked this question. And didn’t get any answers from the main source trees around here. Were you hearing from your sources that Lovie was in the mix for the HC position?
My feelings about the McNair's and this hire is that they allowed themselves to get boxed into a corner. Like the opposite of a boss.

The fact that he's even in the mix and can cause a stalemate on who the next HC should be is mind boggling to me. Feels like it makes caserio job that much more difficultI’ve stated that several times over the past few weeks. But since he’s in the mix, him and Caserio could reach an agreement. The primary reason fans want him out is because of a SI article filled with anonymous jaded exBoB people threw mud at Easterby after they got transitioned out. This is the primary reason fans want Easterby out of the building.
