There is absolutely nothing bold or proactive about anyone in the entire McNair family. They have always been half-hearted reactionaries, going back to Bob McNair.

Lovie does fit their mold of an uninspiring yes man. That said, I would like to see him do well but I am admittedly jaded by Lovie because he was so terrible here. Lovie was the coach when I first bought season tickets here. It took him 12 home games to finally win a game at Ray Jay. I sat through 11 home losses before I finally witnessed a regular season game victory in person here. 0-8 my first year and 0-3 for the first 3 games of his second season until he managed to beat the Jags. The people that sat next to me kept telling me to stop coming because they hadn't won since I showed up 😂.

Hopefully, he will re-invent himself and has learned to be a little more enthusiastic and not so dull. He just always sounded dull and defeated here.

I like Lovie, and his D was promising last year considering the talent.

I don’t like him as a HC, though, I think we’d have been better hiring the best OC available as a HC and letting Lovie manage the D would have been a better option.

I can’t help feeling that something was amiss about this hiring cycle, Culley was fired late, then they never really got into the swing of interviewing the big names on the carousel, then this dilly-dallying at the end between McCown and Flores before U-turning and promoting Lovie.

If we now promote Pep as OC then really what have we done? Chopped off the upper end of the management structure and promoted from within.

That’s closer to what discount retailers do when they want to save money on middle managers than top class sports teams.

Cover 2 is loosely used. SF was primarily a cover 2 in the backend. They were able to get pressure with 4 and their lbs could drop in those windows. Lovie prefers smaller,faster lb and dl, whereas SF has guys like Armstead inside.

I was OK with Culley for another year or two. Lovie is just a replacement for Culley, but will be an upgrade in my opinion.

I think the importance of the coaching changes is the replacement of Tim Kelly as OC and, although it wasn't planned, Campen choosing to leave for the Panthers. We'll also have new replacements at qb coach and te coach, assuming Hamilton is promoted to OC.

If we look at this clearly, we shouldn't expect to see much of anything different if Culley hadn't been fired.

The key to the off season remains the draft and, in my opinion, improving our OL and rushing offense.

He's building the team the way he wants and then is going to add a younger HC. If McCown joins the staff that will be telling.

That's the defense the Texans put up last year, if Lovie Smith put up those stats on another team people would call out the bad hire for what it is.

Could have got a younger guy with potential, double downed on older guy in over his head.

Got a defensive minded coach who's runs a simple zone coverage. Fantastic.


Is it a race thing? Texans doubling down on the "hiring a black guy to fail" accusations? Genius! Now we can fire Lovie next year or two, and deal with that story line again.

I just want stability. Thought Culley was gonna be good for that but guess they decided to continue to tinker. We're not in a position to go after the inspiring choice tbh.

Think this is way better than importing more cancer into the organization and better than elevating an unproven option.

But people aren't happy because people feel like they're in control of everything and get very upset and indignant about not actually being the ones making decisions. They wanted to activist mob us into taking Flores or Bienemy and a major **** off to that and them is all good in my book.

Let's go Lovie and hopefully Pep and McCown too. He's a good man and I can at least root for that. Hoping to be competitive and continue working with Mills. I'm not gonna be looking at record much this year either but as long as the games themselves reveal progress then this can be another year where the team is better than any of the O'Brien AIDS years despite the record.

Tbh I think they just wanted to "activist mob" the Texans into hiring a Black guy, and it looks like it worked.

Lovie Smith wasn't even discussed until Flores' stuff came out.

Might have saved us from Josh McCown though

What I'm hearing on 610 is that Hamilton, and McCown, favor a west coast offense and an outside ZBS.

The question is whether Pep, if he becomes the Texans OC, is allowed to put his offense and ideas into the Texans offense?

I wouldn’t say they screwed the pooch on this. They got a better coach than who they were interviewing.

This search they had their picks lined up, and then the Flores lawsuit came out of nowhere. At the last minute they realized it was bad timing to do what they are trying to do.

They will try again when the heat is off them and this time 100% McCown gets it.

This works better for everybody.

The best argument for the Texans screwing the pooch is hiring Culley in the first place. But I think Culley got tired of Kirby and when he found his exit he took it.
 
They could have done worse, but one thing is for sure - in the next 2 years we will not sniff a winning season. Between TB and Illinois, Lovie Smith has not had a winning record in the last 7 years as HC. I'm just hoping this new staff can develop and won't ruin Mills but I'm not counting on it. 2022 and 2023 seasons have 4-6 wins all over it. Then once he is fired in 2 years we will either hire Mc-Clown or another bum. Hopefully Caserio doesn't get to hire a 3rd HC but I'm sure he will. Frankly until Doofus Cal sells this team embarrassment after embarrassment will continue.

I've always respected Lovie in Chicago and I'm fine with the hire. His problem there was always offense and QB related. Ideally you have a GM who helps resolve that.

So whatever winding road they took to get here, it wasn't ideal but I'm not going to dwell on it. There are more important matters to focus on now with the rebuild.

I doubt that if that was not the plan, TK would still be here and Pep would not have been moved up to OC.
 
David Culley was the PRE-bridge coach to Lovie Smith the new bridge coach. This is beginning to sound much like the bridge to nowhere. This is a decade long rebuilding plan.

That’s when Caserio gets his contract extension. When McCown is hired HC in 2-3 years.

That’s when the rebuilding is “over” to those is NRG. The other stuff 3 years prior don’t count. I am not saying that. I am saying that is what it is to be viewed in NRG and usually that’s when a contract extension happens.

I hope…. That would probably be the best scenario for Mills.
 
Wonder what Culley is thinkin? Probably pissed off a bit. I know he was well compensated but still, my guess is he’s a bit perturbed

How many siblings does Cal have, and why are they not calling for a sale of the franchise, but perhaps they are but of course they are powerless
if Janice is the sole owner which she probably is as the founders widow. I dunno maybe the team is really that important to Janice ?
