Head Coach Candidate (Lovie Smith Hired) 2/7/22

We will see what Pep can do at OC. Still, more experience than what Culley had and it was evident he was lost.
Pep was here last year & we still couldn't run the ball. You'd think after just 8 weeks they'd have been open to any idea from any one in the building.

With Pep as OC, I think we are more likely to move to the ZBS. That will improve the running game instantly. Our current roster is a better fit for the ZBS anyway.

The Texans suck in such a multitude of ways. Yet, you're dismayed by posts on a message board?

No one here started the fire. We're all just watching it burn.

I'm not dismayed by anything, being dismayed would mean that I care what people are saying and I mostly don't. I just find it funny.

Dave Campen is a ZBS coach. They were Zone Blocking last season.

They weren't doing that zone stretch Kubiak relies heavily on. But they were zone blocking

I get that you guys want to look past anything that takes away from this sham of a hire but if a .500 NFL coach and a guy who went 17-39 in college is your answer to this disaster of a franchise some of you guys will buy anything. But hey, it is your blind fandom that empowers these guys in the first place so congrats.

The sham is thinking anybody is going to make a difference right now. This team is still a ways away from being competitive for anything. That’s why I was surprised to got rid of Culley after 350 days, because firing him now and getting a 2nd HC really does nothing at the moment. Especially seeing how they’re likely landing on Lovie.

As I’ve mention upthread, they just appear to have no vision, no direction at the moment. Not to mention they’re so bad off that it seems no legit candidate wants to touch this place with a 39 and a half foot pole.

In hindsight, I think if they knew how things were going to play out they would not have fired Culley. Now, they obviously can't go back and re-hire Culley so hiring Lovie Smith is the closest thing to doing that right now.

Personally, I think Josh McCown will be a good HC someday. However, you can't go from no experience (even though it can be argued that he's been a coach on most teams that he's played for) to HC. If they hire Lovie, make Josh the OC and see how he performs there. If he does well, then hopefully he's still around when Lovie gets fired in a couple of years. Sorry, but Lovie isn't the answer. He's a dinosaur in today's NFL. We saw that here in Tampa Bay and unless he's totally re-invented himself I don't see that changing.
He is a dinosaur in that he invariably sticks to the cover 2 defense. With this approach, he will need a perfect fitting defensive roster to expect to have consistent success. But who knows, as a HC, his goals/duties will have changed and he could very well in wisdom choose a DC that can adjust away from his in-stone scheme. There is some hope for this.

I won't be upset if they go with Lovie. I expect him to be an upgrade over Culley.

I think he'll do better than McCown or Flores. I would have been interested to see how Gannon fared, but I think the Flores lawsuit put a stop to that because that would have appeared to have been validation of the suit, although not nearly as bad as choosing McCown.

This board cracks me up.

The Texans suck because they won't hire a top tier coach.

The Texans suck because no top tier coach will come here.

The Texans suck because they won't forge their own path.

The Texans suck because they aren't going down the proven path.

The Texans suck because they aren't telling everyone what they are doing.

The Texans suck because they are telling us everyone they are interviewing.

Its a never ending source of entertainment watching so many heads explode at the slightest little thing.
You could have stopped after the first three words in each line.

Lovie Smith makes eminent sense.
Former Chicago Bears HC and great defensive mind with the added bonus that he is the right color.
To continue...
Lovie has the inside running.
He is already familiar with all the personel.
I hope it happens - then all the fucenhaters around the league cansucit.

Up until the San Diego game, I didn't really see much ZBS. I think that goes back to the OC, and him wanting to run what he knows. When all of the starters were out, using the ZBS made more sense for the less experienced guys, because they had to think less. In turn, it almost made it look like we had a good OLine. I wish Campen would have stayed, but I can't blame him for leaving for the sure thing. I'm sure he understood that whoever the new HC would be, his position wasn't guaranteed. With TK gone, and possibly Pep as OC, they will have more power to make changes to the blocking scheme.

Dinosaur or no, he is likely the best option out there right now.
Sure make him interim HC and wait for that better option, but at least he has HC experience and is already familiar with the personel here.
And as I mentioned earlier, he is the right color.

So, the Texans had these head coaching candidates available to start their search:
Brian Daboll - helped turn Josh Allen into a very good QB
Matt Eberflus - helped turn the Colts defense into a top 10 defense
Nathaniel Hackett - helped Blake Bortles and the Jags get to the AFCCG
Mike McDaniel - assisted Shanahan in developing solid running games, something the Texans have struggled with since AF
Josh McDaniels
Kevin O'Connell
Doug Pederson - won a Super Bowl as HC of the Eagles with Foles and Wentz as his QB's
Josh McCown - high school coach
Flores

Now it's down to Lovie (not even a consideration at the beginning of the head coaching search) and Flores, a guy who has made himself NFL enemy #1.

Not uncommon around the league really.

Mike McDaniel & Hackett came from nowhere to snag gigs wasn’t really on any ones radar…if he was he was way down the list.

And Eric Bienemy still hasn’t landed a gig….& he’s been out there for 4 years now.

Sirianni did the same thing last year.

What? You expect the Texans to do something right? Get in line behind all the other disappointed folks. LOL

If Lovie becomes HC I expect Miles Smith to become DC.

The only disappointment I have over all this is that they haven't (and I guess they're not) hired Josh McCown. I was really looking forward to hearing how they would spin the move.

Don't rule out Rodney Marinelli the defensive line coach for the Raiders. Marinelli and Lovie have strong philosophical ties and Marinelli has had extensive experience, including several HC, DC, assistant HC stints. He's older, but could be the best transition option while grooming the younger future permanent DC which could be Miles Smith.

I didn’t realize Marinelli was still in the league. He’d be the perfect DC option. And was Lovie’s DC in Chicago from 2010-2012.

Peanut Tillman and Lance Briggs were hoping Chicago would bring him or Lovie back as DC under Eberflus this upcoming season:

So, if Lovie is hired, will this start the Official Rebuild®, or, is he just another so-called "placeholder" head coach?

How many of these head coaches does Caserio get as GM? I'd say the over/under is at least 3.5.

The McNairs will give him at least a third chance, because that's what stupid, out-of-touch, rich people would do.

There is absolutely nothing bold or proactive about anyone in the entire McNair family. They have always been half-hearted reactionaries, going back to Bob McNair.

Wake me up when this team is finally over .500. It'll be a while.

The reason it appears this way is Culley wasn't willing to take the hickey for the team for 2-3 yrs. Plus he really struggled with the PR side of the HC position. Lovie wont have these issues.

McDaniels in Miami and Lovie, 2 minority hires since the Flores crap. Not shocked.

No...no he wasn't/isn't. See below post and that list

Yep...which is way they are stuck/picking Smith.
