Head Coach Candidate (Lovie Smith Hired) 2/7/22

Sounds lime the Broncos are looking to put pen to paper with him asap.
I guess Caserio has more important things to do right now.

Or he has no real interest in Gannon and is just doing due diligence to see if he wows him in an interview. It happens, just the other day I interviewed someone and looking at their resume I thought there was no way but once they actually interviewed they were really good and I hired them.

I know nothing about Gannon so really have no opinion per se…but I think Speedy hit it on the head. First it was Broncos and now Pats. If all you ever do is copy others you have no identity. How about leading instead of following and blazing your own trail.

Robert Frost put it best…

two roads diverged in a wood and I took the one less traveled by…
And that has made all the difference.

I stated earlier that my preference for the new HC was one with an offensive background. However if the Texans go defensively, I'm liking Jonathan Gannon. Although still relatively young, 39, he's had a lengthy background in the NFL going back to 2007, including 3 years as a scout from 2009 to 2011. His latest career jump was as Phily's DC in 2021, using the 43 scheme. Over the 14 years of his career he's had exposure to multiple schemes (I hope this comment I heard refers to both sides of the ball) and may have the flexibility I also would like to see in our head coach.

I prefer the experience of Gannon over the inexperience of Mayo.

I would prefer an offense minded coach and keep Lovie as DC. That defense last year looked way better than they had any right to.

You could make the argument that Texans did blaze their own trail by hiring Culley. The problem with blazing your own trail is that all trails have been walked. Even the greats like Belichick fall back on what they know and what they've learned and build off of that. Pretty much everyone is copying someone just some tweak it enough and have enough success at it that they make it their own. You see this in music all the time, a signer covers a song so well that in the minds of people it becomes their song and the original artist is often forgotten. I don't personally care who they do or do not copy if it equals winning. If they become the true "Patriots south" I'm fine with that as long as they also copy the Patriots wins.

I've had the same thing happen to me.

As what most seem to consider the least attractive destination (Houston) you'd think he'd want to get in front of the rest and really get these visits rolling.

I'd like for him to put all of his requests out there so we'd know who he's interested in. I thought all the N.E. guys would be lined up to come in by now...what's he waiting on? Maybe he wants to be the last man standing so he can have his pick of who didn't get signed.

Clearly patience isn't my strongest attribute!

I wish the Texans would approach this like we hear teams supposedly do the draft & take the best coach available. The more conditions the Texans have the smaller the pool of coaches become.

The biggest thing the Texans have going for them is that there are only 32 NFL head coaching jobs available on the planet so people might put up with a certain amount of crap to get one of those coveted jobs.

Sadly this is a far cry from Jim Crane, Jeff Luhnow, & A. J. Hinch coming together with a plan. This is closer to Moe, Larry and Curly running the show.

With Eastercluck in place and Caserio being an all-powerful GM on the coaching cans, I'm guessing there are many excellent coaching candidates who figure Why would I go there?
More than likely most people are going to be disappointed with the new HC hire. That is because those HCs that would not be a disappointment won't be interested in taking the Texans job. FUBAR WARNING is in EFFECT!

Did Shanny copy Walsh? Did Kubes copy Shanny? Did Lil Shanny copy Kubes and his dad? Did LaFluer copy Lil Shanny? etc... Yes other coaches bring with them systems that they learned under other HC's. Hopefully they tweak the system a little to make it their own.

Thing is many around here grew up on Kubes WCO and dont like the Belichick/McDaniels EP type offense.

Me I'm hoping McDaniels becomes the next HC. If not then I'm hoping for Lombardi. Both of these guys have proven that they know how to run an offense and they're well connected in NFL circles so they should be able to hire great staffs.

I agree! Sadly, this owner is not well liked. I like B Flores or Lombardi. But, I think it will be Mayo! The Patriot connection is strong with Nick.

No need to interview them. They’re all buddies and one of them is likely already been given the job. Just gotta go through the motions to make it look like they’re doing their due diligence.

For what it is worth here are the Vegas odds on next Texans head coach. Heard this on 610 this morning. Here is the article.

Brian Flores 11/4 -- Current/Last Job: Former Miami Dolphins head coach
Jerod Mayo 15/4 -- Current/Last Job: New England Patriots linebackers coach
Lovie Smith 7/1 -- Current/Last Job: Houston Texans defensive coordinator
Byron Leftwich 15/2 -- Current/Last Job: Tampa Bay Buccaneers offensive coordinator
Leslie Frazier 8/1 -- Current/Last Job: Buffalo bills defensive coordinator
Pep Hamilton 8/1 -- Current/Last Job: Houston Texans quarterbacks coach
Brian Daboll 17/2 -- Current/Last Job: Buffalo Bills offensive coordinator
Josh Mcdaniels 9/1 -- Current/Last Job: New England Patriots offensive coordinator
Kevin O'Connell 9/1 -- Current/Last Job: Los Angeles Rams offensive coordinator

I'm not so sure about Lovie Smith, but at least he's been a HC before. Hopefully he should know when to call a time out. Interesting footnote, Lovie Smith interviewed for the Texans HC job after Kubiak left. I wonder what could have been if we'd have hired him instead of OB.

Took his team to a SB and another team to a NFCCG that the Bears may have won had Cutler not gotten injured.

Lovie wont be my 1st choice, but if he's named HC of the Texans I wont hate on the pick. He's a proven winning NFL HC.

My sleeper HC pick is Raheem Morris, current DC for the Rams. He has extensive coaching experience, including HC, DC and WR coach. He runs the Tampa 2 defense and would work well in retaining Lovie as DC.
I don't want someone who has never had HC experience before. Raheem is only 45 years old with 20 years coaching and is a guy we should be looking at and interviewing as soon as the Rams are out.

Morris is an excellent suggestion. He’s still young enough to be a long term answer and has many many years of experience at all levels even doing a stint as WR coach for the Falcons instead of his usual DB job.

Not really. They've already documented enough due diligence. The only reason to drag it out would be for the benefit of the fans.

& we know they don't care about the fans.

Haven't heard of anything for Byron Leftwich, but I think he would be my number 1 target. He knows enough of how to incorporate the Patriots offense while molding it to his vision. He is younger, experienced leading his offense, and could lean on Lovie a little while allowing Lovie to run his side of the ball fully. I love his interviews, well spoken, smart, relatable. I think he is the next Vrabel, former player turned into an up-and-coming coach, might be a tad soon, but I would gamble on him.

I'm surprised Nathaniel Hackett hasn't been mentioned.

Nathaniel Hackett, offensive coordinator, Green Bay Packers

When Hackett quietly interviewed for the Falcons’ job last year, it was a head slap moment for the rest of the league, which had spent years turning over every rock to find smart, offensive coaches but largely ignored one that had been available all along. Hackett, whom we wrote about in much more depth Thursday, has a trajectory includes massive offensive turnarounds at nearly every stop. At Syracuse, he turned a downtrodden program’s offense into one of the nation’s leaders and established quarterback Ryan Nassib as a draft prospect. In Buffalo he helped turn a sub-.500 team into a 9–7 outfit with a respectable offense, despite its lack of firepower. In Jacksonville, he designed an offense for Blake Bortles that finished fifth in points per game and sixth in yards

DeMeco Ryans is my favorite for obvious reasons, but I also like the idea of Byron Leftwich, Raheem Morris, or Kellen Moore. Jarod Mayo might be the greatest coach on earth, but I'd feel much more comfortable if he fully ran a defense for a season or two.

…..outside of the 8 (W16) and 4 (W12) additional cylinders plus the 4 and 2 turbochargers on both engines respectfully.

Same could be said about Alfa Romeo’s V6 being exactly half of Ferrari’s V12.
Volkswagen owns alot of companies too. Audi is the luxury side of Volkswagen and Porsche has alot of common parts too. They own Bentley, Bugatti, and I think Lamborghini too. Didn't mean to derail 😆

I dont really care who they get honestly. I would like to get the Vikings offensive staff/system to work with them. If you got proven systems on both sides of the ball, you can steal system players to fit. Nobody has been able to replicate the NE system without Brady with success, but we've witnessed more success with the Walsh/Holmgren/Shanny/Reid west coast variations. I mean, when was the last time those coaches spent high picks on wrs, rbs,and te's? If you get 2 systems, you can have a delegator as lead man like Harbaugh in Baltimore.

With Pep declining the Panthers OC interview. It could mean the Texans have let him know he’ll be getting that job or better here. The only question is when will the fans get the news as well. I suspect the Texans will wait another week or two before letting us in on their vision.

I thought the pick was going to be Mayo as well, but here we are almost a week since Culley got his walking papers and not word one about Mayo anywhere conected to the Texans other than speculation from the pundits 4 or 5 days ago. So go figure...

I could be wrong but I'm thinking that what Caserio said about Watson not playing here also means that Flores is out as HC. That was apparently the big selling point for Flores is that Watson really wanted to play for him. So now I'm rooting for Flores to get a job with a team thats has lots of picks and wants to make a splash because if we are able to trade Watson that might be our best bet.

Caserio like Brady may want completely out from under Belichick’s shadow. Pep Hamilton has had an interesting coaching career. He did get a brief stint as a HC (GM) in the XFL with DC Defenders for a 5 game season (3-2) before they closed their doors. He’s only 47 years old and maybe Caserio is looking at giving him his chance…..but they’ll need a new OC and maybe that’s what they’re doing behind the scenes before PH is named the new HC.

The only piece of the puzzle for the coaching staff would be a new OC. Maybe Shane Day (Chargers QB Coach) might be a name to keep in mind. He’s also 47 years old and has a fairly decent coaching resume.

Rooting hard for the Giants.

I was thinking this too, what if Caserio appoints Pep the HC...that would be the surprise flying under the radar.

We don't know exactly how many invitations have been offered and counter response either sat on or ignored up to now,

I guess I'm making the assumption that they're all being announced as the invites are being sent out as has happened with Flores, Lombardi, Hines and Gannon? (did I miss one?)

Why Brian Flores-Deshaun Watson duo would be a huge mistake for Giants

The Giants have a culture problem, and adding more culture questions is not going to make it go away.

That, more than upside or talent, needs to be considered as the team is at least pondering the possibility of trying to make a Brian Flores, Deshaun Watson head coach, quarterback duo a reality this offseason.

Rumors are just that, rumors. We know that in sports. But there certainly seems to be something to the idea of Watson wanting to play for Flores in Miami, and the Texans quarterback now reconsidering his trade demand options with Flores out. Perhaps it’s a spot on theory. Perhaps it’s not. Heck, Flores might not even get hired this cycle after his surprise firing in Miami.

But when it comes time to decision making for the Giants, hopes and dreams of pairing two questionable characters (one in a football sense and one in an off-the-field sense) don’t add up.

Let’s start with Flores.

The former Bill Belichick assistant is a good coach. His defense and special teams excelled in Miami. Considering where the franchise was when he arrived, back-to-back winning seasons in his second and third years should be considered a success. Flores is on the path to being the rare Belichick assistant that can win on his own.

But let’s also consider the other side, and why Flores is without a job as you read this. Flores was reportedly not easy to get along with around the office. He rubbed people the wrong way. He didn’t set the culture for the Dolphins, but made it hard for people within that building to feel comfortable. He reportedly bickered with the front office and made his disappointment with Miami’s young quarterback well known within league circles.

Maybe there’s a little old-school Tom Coughlin in there that would excite Giants fans. But there’s also enough reason to worry about replacing Joe Judge with another New England assistant who has an attitude and won’t reset the Giants culture. Flores could be a playoff-caliber coach. Or he could flame out and return to being an assistant sooner than you think.

Then, of course, there’s Watson.

No one could deny the talent. Watson would be the most talented quarterback to ever put on a Giants uniform. But is that worth it for the organization? Some want the Giants to be less “family like” and reach outside the comfort zone to fix a sinking ship. But Watson, with 22 sexual misconduct allegations pending and not yet settled, may be a bridge too far. Plus, on the football side, we’re talking about a player that just held out and held his team hostage for a year in order to get what he wanted and a trade out of town.

THE REST OF THE STORY

Sentimentally I'm very pro-DeMeco, but being more objective Leftwich would seem to be the better pick: he has several years coordinator experience vs just this year for Ryans, but both are youn g men with experiece as NFL players themselves.
As the Tampa OC he's personally coached TB12 who our rookie QB is comparble to in terms of type & physical traits, skills.

John Mara's call to Stephen Ross to inquire about Brian Flores may be one of the more interesting calls in the NFL's ongoing process to fill 7 head coaching vacancies. On the other hand, could the Giants make a more dramatic hiring and trade for their fan base than Flores - Watson? Despite the negatives, I'm not sure there is faster road to improvement for the Giants than Flores - Watson. Is it a road to be traveled? Giants fans are probably thinking, Hell Yeah! When you consider all of the other alternatives available compared to Flores - Watson, it's a poor man's crap game.

New York may be the safest place for Watson to disappear since New York appears to be on the side of actual and alleged criminals. How far up the ladder would Watson’s alleged activities go compared to tossing folks onto Subway tracks, stabbing random folks in public, looting businesses at gun point or beating the elderly? I couldn’t imagine city leaders or their constituents offended by Watson’s arrival when they allow every actual criminal caught in the act to walk out precincts scott free. If Watson would make them winners, New York would be celebrating once again.

New York may be the safest place for Watson to disappear
The media capital of the world is the safest place for Watson?

Can we post about Watson and Flores in New York either in the NFL coaching thread or the Watson trade rumor thread? It has jack to do with the Texans coaching search.

Is there a car thread you were trying to find?

The Giants should be the last team concerned about character when they let LT do whatever, whenever.

My big three are still Daboll, Leftwich, and Ryans in no particular order - assuming mutual interest. I'm also intrigued by a few others including Hackett and Morris and they are worth an interview if they are interested. I've crossed the Dallas OC Kellen Moore off my list after that game. A QB draw with 14 seconds left? Ummm. NO.

Unlike SteelB, I'm not interested in interviewing or hiring Josh McDaniels. He's a first rate asshole, a liar, and not a man of his word. Simply put - he's off my list entirely. I do agree that he's probably the only guy that could bring that offensive system here and do it relatively successfully, but my question is why do we insist on running a variation of the NE offense. Give me the WC offense or some variant of it and I'm a happy camper.
