Davis Mills is a poor man's...

He’s definitely shown more play making ability & better ball placement.

But Schaub new how to read a defense & drive his offense. That imo is where Mills needs to improve
Mills as a rookie with limited experience was allowed to change plays at the line of scrimmage... Schaub and Watson were only allowed to check down to run plays.

with more experience I think he's going to become a student and learn how to read defenses (which he already does).

I think you nailed it.
I am pleased with his deep passing - that is an aspect of his play that will keep opposing defences on their toes.
I also like his calm demeanor in the pocket - that tells me he is confident and bodes well for his future.
If he turns out as good as Rivers, Texans fans will be singing Caserios praises for years.
Personally, I think he will be a better Dalton with a better arm.
Isn’t that Philip Rivers or are you adding in his Ron Burgundy News Team personality?

I’m with you. But let’s be real. We ain’t getting to a Super Bowl next year, or the year after even with Brady in his prime.

Too much work to do before we’re in the wild card hunt. Mills (Schaub/Cousins) suits this team just fine.
Truth.
And I don't think a top tier QB would even want to come here with such a weak roster.
Build up the roster and you might get a top tier guy to consider coming here.

Build up the roster and hopefully you don't need to get a top tier guy to come here because you already have one. Rarely does even a tope tier guy going to another team really work out. Brady in Tampa and Manning in Denver are the exceptions and with Manning its because of that defense.

Draft a Qb!!!!!!! Not a believer........... sorry! View attachment 9512

Noddle arm and............ he hold the ball too long. To the point that he is not functional as NFL QB. He gonna need an elite line to ever give us decent production.
Saying Mills has a noodle arm negates anything else you might say about him.

As far as a floor or ceiling for Mills, I have no idea. Like SBT, I want to see how he operates within a competent offensive system. From what I've seen of him, he has the talent and ability to be an above average QB with just the addition of better OL play. Add a better schemed run game along with more talented RBs and who knows where his ceiling is? I like the kid a helluva lot better than any QB in the 2022 draft. Add some talent in the trenches, on both sides of the ball, a competent NFL caliber OC and we will see a much improved Texans team in 2022. With a full compliment of draft picks, hopefully seriously augmented by a DW4 trade, it could be a fun offseason.

If he becomes Kirk Cousins-like I would be delighted imo. Kirk can hover around top-10
Those types of QBs set teams back for years. They tantalize with glimpses of eliteness but can't seal the deal, for the most part, unless everything else around them is perfect. Too many teams waste the prime years of other players careers waiting on that project QB to blossom. I'm all in on Davis Mills for 2022. I don't see a better option out there unless the Seahawks let Russell Wilson get traded and I highly doubt Wilson sees Houston as the place to be. Having said that, if I don't like what I see out of Mills in 2022, I'm looking to the 2023 draft to replace him.

I'm waiting for a QB that I would trade 3 first round picks for. Not saying that I would, or would have to just saying I need to love the guy that much. If he's though of as a 3rd or 4th rounder, of course I'd wait.

But the point is, as long as Mills doesn't play stupid or scared, I'm sticking with him until I find a guy I absolutely love

What is liking what you see? Putting up Cousins numbers?
I wish you would've just deleted the word butthurt from my previous post TK. It would've saved me a lot of typing, even though it describes the feelings some have for Derrick and what Derrick loves to have shoved up his butt perfectly.

I will take Cousins numbers with an OL that can only help produce 3.0 yds per carry and not protect Mills well. What I cant wait to see is what with a decent OL and weapons like Cook/Theien/Jefferson/Conklin that Mills will look like. I bet he will look better than Cousins.

Not all numbers are created equal, but you already know this. You're just trying to down Mills because your feelings are extremely hurt (Better TK?) because your hero burned you and your use of numbers to try to make Mills look worse than he was last yr somehow seems to justify those feelings in your mind.

Bottom line for me is despite these handicaps Mills played better than any rookie QB in the NFL over the last month of the season. These should be exciting times for you and other Texans fans but we all know why they aren't. BTW, what were you expecting from Mills with his 26 starts in both college and the NFL? Manning level QB play? This just in Manning wasn't all that his rookie yr either.

Hope I've cleaned this post up enough for you TK.

Yeah and quite frankly until the team around the QB is built, no reason to force it now. Mills is easily the guy for 2022. It's not really up for debate at this point.

How can we build the team around him? OL and running back would be my priorities. I think with Cooks and Collins, we are ok at WR and Jordan showed enough spunk at TE.

I'm of the same thought. We are still at the beginning of a pretty long rebuild. Still have practically a whole roster to upgrade.

Which is why I hope we build in the trenches and focus on skill players in the next couple of years.

That's the main reason I hope we draft one of the two pass rushers and if they are gone Neal.

Are you beating any of those young qbs in the afc with Kirk Cousins?
Cousins has a losing record in the regular season and is 1-4 in his only playoff appearances. To this day, I’m still mystified as to why the Vikings gave Cousins such a stupid contract….when he hadn’t even earned such a payday and they still had Case Keenum (NFCCG) on their roster. That Cousins contract really deep-holed the Vikings.

Timing is everything in the NFL. The Texans getting Mills in RD3 and his in season development this year couldn’t have been timed any better.

Having moved the need of a QB to the back-burner Caserio can now put his focus on putting a team around his young QB. The real window on this project is roughly 2 seasons b/c Mills burned his 1st year on a mulligan season.

If I’m Caserio, I get this offense as close to done in 2022 to better measure if Mills is the definitive answer at QB going forward. If Mills has done his job in 2022 and 2023, Caserio needs to get him a new contract and not wait until he’s done in 2024.

Cousins' numbers are fine as far as stats go. He's a solid QB 2nd tier QB. What I would like to see is if Mills has the intangibles that help him put his team on his shoulders and will them to victory. How clutch is he? Does he fold under the pressure of the moment? Cousins decidedly doesn't have the intangibles to do that. Like his stats suggest, he's almost there. Almost a franchise QB. That "almost" is what I was referring to when I said QBs like that can set a franchise back for years, waiting on them to finally blossom into a franchise QB. Teams invest resources to build a team around that QB and quite often end up squandering potentially great careers waiting on something that likely isn't going to happen instead of facing the truth and going in another direction at QB.

I think it’s more accurate to say he, like Flacco hasn’t consistently shown those intangibles. They’ve both shown flashes, Flacco, & Foles for that matter, have been able to string enough of those performances together to win a Super Bowl.

The problem is they were paid as if they were something they were not.

Caserio has three more years to determine if Mills is that guy. Three more years also to find & acquire that guy as well.

So, imo, as long as Mills is on his rookie contract, Caserio is ahead of the sticks if Mills plays like Cousins, Foles, or Flacco.

That's kinda why it's a danger zone and people are worried. If your young QB is playing like Flacco, Cousins, or Files (to a lesser extent) then their is a temptation to settle with them and bank on "potential".

Hopefully Texans management is willing to take a hard look, like the Cardinals did with Rosen, if a better QB shows up in a draft.

The good….there isn’t a better QB in the 2022 NFL Draft class. That buys the Texans and Mills the 2022 season to see if they can get more forward steps out of his development. We’ll all have to wait and see what the 2023 NFL Draft brings in regards to QB prospects.

Better is subjective. The Jags thought Blake Bortles was better. The Titans thought Locker was better. Then they thought Mariotta was better.

But to your point I agree. Caserio should be looking to replace Mills until Mills can demonstrate he can play with the consistency Cousins, Flacco, & Foles don’t.

All I’m saying is Caserio needs to be in love with the guy & not just grab a guy because he’s the best of a mediocre bunch.

Put talent around him and I will bet he's going to be much better than those guys. If he stays healthy.

Mark Vandermeer writing today that Davis led all QB’s in Red Zone passing this year and also said he had the third highest rookie completion percentage with those above 250 attempts since 1950. He also mentioned rookies Jordan, Collins and Morrisey figured in many of those red zone TD’s.

Did you know Joe Burrow was the most sacked QB this year?

Get us a Joe Mixon & Jamar Chase & we'll be scoring 30ppg. Might even win a few if our defense can hold teams to 27ppg
Wait until Burrow hurts his knee again. (Which he will if he keeps on getting hit like he did this yr.) Then we will see what the attitude of the fans in Cincy is. I was for picking Slater/OT from OREGON with the Bengals pick. But Chase was the right pick if Burrow can get through this season unscathed. Burrow to Chase/Higgins/Boys/Uzomah is special. I would like to see what Mills can do with weapons like those guys.

Hopefully Caserio can fix the OL and find a Pickens/Ross type receiver in this draft.

I like this plan of going offense and surrounding Mills with every possible weapon and if he doesn’t pan out, the offense is ready to go.

How bout trading Derrick, going OT Neal at 3, then with the other additional 1st from Derrick getting WR Treylon Burks, getting TE McBride at 37, and RB Isaiah Spiller at 68?
Go all out offense and surround Mills. Go defense the rest of the draft.
HOU needs to own this draft, FFS

You really need to add a interior OL if you truly want to fix the run game.

Is there a history of later round QBs that came in the league kinda slow and then improve every year to become a top 15 QB? When i think about later round QBs I think about Wilson, Dak, Cousins. With all of them you knew pretty quickly, that they will be good. Maybe Jimmy G. but you can argue, if he ever was or ever will be a top 15 QB.

Don't get me wrong, I like Mills - I expected a lot less and I do believe he belongs in this league. But he hasn't really shown me anything that makes me believe, that he can be more than a lower tier starter or upper tier backup. I am fine with giving him the next season to prove himself - but I would be very surprised if we can everl label him a franchise QB.

Everyone is different. The fact that Mills only played 11 college games sets him apart from the guys you mentioned

Not really.

Off the top of my head... Tom Brady, Tony Romo (UDFA), Rich Gannon (4th), Kurt Warner (UDFA), Matt Schaub (3rd), Bart Starr (17th), Matt Hasselback (6th). I'm sure there are others.
