Davis Mills vs rookie QBs

I believe Mills has shown enough growth this season, that I could’ve easily seen him making a strong impact at Stanford this year…..and probably being the top QB coming into the 2022 NFL Draft.

That said, his growth came with a very limited Texans team that supported him with a questionable OL, no running game, and a predictable gameplan for defenses. I think Mills growth for next season is unlimited provided Caserio gives him an improved OL, running game, and an open playbook so defenses don’t come into games prepared to blitz. If this is accomplished….I wouldn’t be surprised to see Mills elevate his production to Mac Jones type of numbers in 2022. Depending on how Caserio handles the draft and free agency may determine if Mills surpasses Jones come 2023 or 2024.

I’ve got the same feeling about Mills that I had for Watson (the QB). I only hope that the team finally has an eye for putting the right talent around him…..something they failed horribly at for Watson.
It seems he may have already surpassed Jones over the past month. Mills has a solid foundation to build on going into the next season.

For the season, Mills is the second leading rookie QB behind Mac Jones. What caught my attention was the paragraph stating that, over the past month, Mills is the leading rookie QB. Over this time his completion percentage is 68.1, his yards per pass attempt is 6.9 and his passer rating is 96.2. And he has two wins.

Early in the season the opinion was expressed that we needed to see improvement in Mills play as the season progressed. I think we've seen that.
Some dont want to admit this.

I wonder why?

The team is devoid of impact skill guys. If it were just about finding out if Mills is good enough, then just get him weapons & I think he’s good enough to put up some good numbers..but the team isn’t built up enough for us to just do that. If your talking about building a team, then you get him help in the trenches 1st, let him be a game manager for 1 season and then get him skill guys in 2023.

too many people have been brainwashed into thinking that a qb can elevate a team from shitty to great…you gotta have a certain level of talent on the team for a qb to be able to elevate his team…if he’s good enough that is. And even then that effect is limited. The Texans as currently constructed don’t have that baseline level of talent yet. We could have prime Aaron Rodgers under center and it wouldn’t matter, we’d still be a 4-5 win team.

Give me 2 extra RD1 picks off the backs of Watson and Tunsil…..and I could see Safety- Kyle Hamilton (Notre Dame), OG- Kenyon Green (Texas A&M), and WR- Chris Olave (Ohio State) wearing Steal Blue in 2022. The best defensive back (possibly generational), offensive guard in the draft, and a new bullet at WR could could be a solid step in the right direction.

you’ve in effect blunted the effect of shoring up the o-line by bringing in help at the guard position while jettisoning your pro bowl LT. For the greatest effect, you need to add to what you already have with Tunsil, Howard.

There are some fairly decent OT’s in this draft. I could see trading up for OT- Trevor Penning (Northern Iowa) or selecting OT- Darian Kinnard (Kentucky) or OT- Nick Broeker (Ole MIss). There’s also OT’s that’ve been covering for Tunsil that would benefit from stud Guards.

Please. Get me a RB with home run ability
Breece Hall (Iowa State), Zach Charbonnet (UCLA), Rachaad White (Arizona St), or Tyler Allgeier (BYU) would all be amazing……from RD3 thru RD5. Any one and/or combination would more than fill the bill for the Texans running woes. Also, all can catch out of the backfield as well.

Agreed

I think the OL can be fixed and an impact RB can be added through the draft. You can add an upgrade in FA at the WR position. Also you can find a Amendola/Renfrow type slot WR later in the draft.

What's going to be missing is adding a difference maker at the TE position. Those guys are hard to find. Just look hard at the Combine and take the best athlete TE you can find. Kelce/Waller/Kittle were all later rd guys but very athletic. Hopefully Caserio gets lucky like the Chiefs/49ers/Raiders did. There's gotta be a Big 10/SEC TE late rd TE great athletic TE to develop out there somewhere.

My thoughts are that we need to protect the QB whoever that may be, I am leaning toward Mills for 2022 season. So I really would prefer a left tackle, then a great defensive back and then a defensive end. I really believe that we can pick up a serviceable running back in the third round. Maybe pick up a QB in the later rounds, if at all. I think that this rebuild is going to be quick and exciting.

You've already got ProBowl LT Laremy Tunsil.

Get the best Guard you can, or a pass rusher

Why a LT? Do you think this is the worse problem we have on the OLine? IMO, our tackles are serviceable. Our interior linemen are our weakness on the OLine.

Get the best RT and the best OG in the 1st 2 rds then your OL will be solid. Find a RB in FA. I like Johnson from Cleveland Mack Indy and Jeff Wilson 49ers. They all should come cheap. Then add a RB in FA.

I'm wanting to draft and put together a powerhouse OL. Keep Tunsil, draft Neal and draft the best OG possible in rd 2. Make it where the run game will be dominant and Mills will be well protected. That will really help the defense by keeping them off of the field.

I very much agree with you. Mills just didn't have the reps in college for a 1st round grade. Had he played even 2 years I think he would have been a 1st round pick. I hope we are both on the right track about Mills. I think we are.

I wouldn’t waste a draft pick on a QB next year unless one just falls into the lap of the Texans. Draft OL

Tunsil is not here and does not want to be here and will cost $26mm a year for the next two years. We need to trade him
How are we going to trade him if he's not here? I haven't heard anything saying he doesn't want to be here.

We played some really good defenses this year & our tackles held up pretty well. Tunsil, Howard, Christian, Heck... all played well.

The interior OL is the biggest issue imo.

Mills outplayed Jones again.

Mills: 23/33; 301 yds; 9.1 avg; 3 TD; 125.5 rating.

Jones: 20/30; 261 yds; 8.7 avg; 1 TD; 1 INT; 1 fumble; 91.1 rating.
LOL
Where were you when Trey Lance outplayed Mills last week?

This has been my thinking. Fix the offense so we can control the game clock and we help the defense.

Use top picks on OL'men, then use our 3's on defense. I figure a good RB can be picked up in the 5th (no, I don't think we have a 5) 6th round, maybe use a 4.

We have too many holes to address, both offensively and defensively. It looks like we ended up with the 3rd pick, a perfect position to generate interest for trading back. If we can get another 2 for trading back to about 8, I'd be all for it. I'd use this second 2 on a defensive player. Work the draft to get the most value for both sides of the ball, just make sure we get the two OL'men we like the best.

I don't keep track of every player. Mac Jones is the QB ahead of Mills, who pretty much, league wide, is recognized as performing second best. If you wanted to compare Trey Lance you should have posted.
LOL Of course you don't keep track. I mean, unless it fits your agenda, that is.

Don’t we expect 1st round pick Trey Lance to outplay him?

Now if Ian Book outplayed him, that would be something to talk about
I don’t because it’s the NFL. Do you guys know how many quarterbacks that Tom Brady has outplayed throughout his entire career? I mean what round was he drafted?
Then how many 1st rounders were bust? Starting it off with J. Russell. Number one pick coming out of LSU.

You don't know this, but we shall see. Why do you worry about the money he makes? Pro Bowl level players get paid.

What gets me is some posters don't want the best ol possible to protect Mills. You would think after Carr and after seeing what a good ol can do for a team, that fans would want the best ol possible. I guess not

Watching the game. I wasn't impressed by Lance although he has great talent and plenty of room to improve. He wasn't accurate. He played with playoff level talent and they won the game as they should have. Of course with a little help from the refs.

If the refs hadn't helped the 49ers and they lost, would you still have thought Lance outplayed Mills. Remember also Mills had a couple of long passes called back by dumb penalties.

2-37 is a prime spot to trade back 4-5 spots and pickup a 3rd. Even if it's a late 3rd.

I have a political agenda but a football agenda? I don't know what that would be.
Somebody has an agenda, but it ain't you. I would like to know what he thinks your agenda is. Obviously Mills has played as well as any rookie QB over the last month and anybody who thinks differently either doesn't know what they are looking at, or has an agenda.

The worst were when he ran out of bounds behind the line of scrimmage. Saw Zach Wilson do that Sunday. Not a good look.

There are a couple of Tackles that can also play guard (Neal and Ekwonu). They could start inside and kick outside if/when Tunsil moves on.

OK I got curious.

Trey Lance had a decent game: 16/23; 249 yds; 10.8 avg (very good); 2 TD; 1 INT; 1 sack; rating 116

Mills certainly below his better games: 21/32; 163 yds; 5.1 avg; 1 TD; 1 INT; 3 sacks; rating 75.4.

SF certainly out played the Texans and had pressure on Mills, shutting off the downfield throws.

Still, for me, the purpose of tracking Mills' stats were to evaluate his documented progress as the season progressed. And as I became aware that Mills was outperforming his draft slot, tracking the statistical difference between Mills and Jones.

SF beat the Texans so it was evident Lance would have had better stats than Mills. Stating the obvious served no purpose.

I had ignored the stats last week and I got curious about Jones. The Pats beat Jacksonville 50-10, so it's apparent he had a good game: 22/30; 227 yds; 7.6 avg; 3 TD's; 0 INT's; 0 sacks. So he also bettered Mills last week.

The numbers would have been better had the Bomb to Cooks not been called back by a dumb holding call. There was also another penalty on a 20 yd pass completion. Mills could've easily been over 200 yds passing and probably closer to 225 yds.

You have to get the biggest difference maker you can. I don't know if any player is head and shoulders better than any others at the position outside of Hamilton
I love Hamilton. He's my #2 rated guy.

Neal is so athletic for such ahuge man. If you drafted him and drafted another huge OG like Kinnard the OL and offense would look so much better.

If you want an impact S then use 3-67 and 4-110 to trade up into the middle of the 2nd rd and pick Brisker from Penis St. That guys really talented too. Very fast and a sure tackler. Reminds me a little bit of the Honey Badger.

A draft like this, might work

1-3 Neal OT
2-37 Brisker S
3-67 Charbonnet RB
3-84 Marquis Hayes OG

Nasty in the run game OL a 3 down RB and a S that's a cornerstone type piece.
