NFL Random Thought of the Day

Harbaugh must have had someone from the powers that be have a heart-to-heart talk with him..............................

.

......................he now says that despite the "humanly impossible" protocol, he is confident the season will happen.

Other teams have said they would issue refunds …. can't see the Texans not following suit.

If the games aren't played …. then they are taking your money for nothing and well , that just aint right.
The NFL has formulated a ticket refund plan for canceled games or those held without fans ONLY.

The interesting question that is bound to come up..............If there are games with fans this season......................What if the fan does not feel comfortable in attending a game? There is no way that the risk of COVID will be mitigated by then. According to the NFL's anticipated plan (which is the guideline for all teams), there is no consideration to this scenario. Can you lose your season ticket money, your season ticket renewal, your PSL?................because you may have legitimate concerns that your attendance could significantly affect your health.

If the NFL/teams do not anticipate the above scenarios and respond appropriately, there will be personal and class action lawsuits being served out like candy.

Perhaps with a Covid discount, only 20%.
COVID precautions cost mucho denaro...............in addition to the anticipated loss of monies....................ticket AND concession and team memorabilia (such as jerseys, etc) prices next year will see a direct reflection. For those who do attend the NFL will try to expand their advertising revenues.............not by more advertising banners in the lower fields...............but, with marketing patches on players' uniforms (like soccer players)...................and, when stadiums are finally allowed to be populated, requiring all fans to plaster large advertising patches on their foreheads.........................

DEANDRE HOPKINSWR, ARIZONA CARDINALS

Speaking Thursday, DeAndre Hopkins said he expects to post better numbers in Arizona.

"So myself, being a receiver, of course I see my stats going up," Hopkins said of Kliff Kingsbury's pass-friendly attack. "But I definitely see myself having one of my more productive seasons." Hopkins slumped to three-year lows across the board last season as the Texans seemed oddly stagnant on offense. Hopkins fills a massive need as a bona fide No. 1 receiver for Kingsbury and Kyler Murray. The Cardinals want to run four-wide attacks and get the ball down field. Personnel made it difficult to do in 2019. Hopkins changes the game for 2020. He's a safe top-five option at wide receiver, with the upside for a No. 1 overall finish.

Joe Bugel, has been recognized as one of the best of NFL offensive line coaches died today at age 80. He led the notorious "Hog" offense line under the Redskins' HC Joe Gibbs, who also assigned him the positions of offensive coordinator and assistant head coach.

Sad to see Bugel passed away.

He was also Bum's OL coach if I remember correctly.

From my May 20, 2020 post:

The problem is that this "workout video" he submitted to convince teams that he and his foot foot is back to normal does not reproduce the stresses that he will experience during a game. Fortunately, he sustained his Lisfranc to his lead foot, not his plant foot. This injury's consequences are more likely to be seen in accuracy due to dysfunction of the lead foot. Also, as a dual threat quarterback, sharply turning or pushing off his left foot to his left is likely to affect his explosiveness.
CAM NEWTON WORKOUT

And then, his throwing shoulder is another factor that has to be ruled out as another problem. He underwent a right rotator cuff surgery in 2017, and came back with a good 2018 season. However, he required an arthroscopic surgery to the same shoulder Jan 2019. He sustained his Lisfranc in week 2. But before that injury, in week 1 and week 2, his completion percentage was an abysmal 40%. When he does come back, it is to be determined how much disability he will demonstrate from both his foot and shoulder.

Richard Sherman points out the big problem with Cam Newton's 'ridiculous' Patriots contract

Quarterback Cam Newton finally found a new home Sunday night, reportedly signing an incentive-laden one-year deal with the New England Patriots. With incentives, the league minimum deal ($1.05 million) could be worth up to $7.5 million, but San Francisco 49ers cornerback Richard Sherman has a problem with it.
Sherman tweeted about Newton’s deal on Sunday night, pointing out the major issue: money.

1593452109725.png

Newton was named NFL MVP in 2015, but has struggled with injuries the past few years. That certainly made him a risk, but his talent can’t be denied. Even in 2018, when he struggled with a shoulder injury that required season-ending surgery, Newton completed 67.9 percent of his passes, by far a career high and ninth-best in the NFL.

Even though Newton was the most talented quarterback left available on the market this offseason, and had been for quite some time, he remained unsigned for longer than he should have been. Teams forked over more money for lesser quarterbacks, making Newton’s deal seem like an even bigger steal.

****************************************************************************************************************************************

Dear GM/Dr. Sherman,

There is more than good reason for the hesitancy of signing Newton......and leading to the structure of the contract. Newton is coming off of the Achilles rupture and an unproven older major shoulder injury/surgery. You quote his 2018 stats, when he played through some relatively minor injury of his labrum, which he turned into a major labrum tear AND rotator cuff tear in week 14 (a game where he precipitously fell to a 55% completion rate with only 4.5 yds per attempt).

He returned after undergoing shoulder surgery to play only 2 games before sustaining a Lisfranc injury. During his two 2019 games, he managed only a 55% completion rate with 6.4 yd per attempt, 0 TDs and 1 INT. And with the additional wear on his newly repaired shoulder in his second game, it was evident he was performing at a significantly lower level in his second game than in his first game, which was not what you want to see.

So now going into the next season, he indeed needs to not only prove that his shoulder will hold up under the maximal testing of a full season, but also prove that his foot will not significantly negatively affect his ability to step into his throws and his ability to explosively push off and change direction...............the latter being a hallmark of his game.

As unfortunate as you may believe it is, players should not be payed according to what they have done in the past (although some are)..........only on the basis of what they may able to realistically bring to the table in the future.

GM/Dr. Sherman, as a closing.................Newton recognizes the situation realistically and is taking a rational approach...............something that too often bypasses you.:tiphat:

I like the one you didn't list the most. Although it's not technically related to the 4 teams in question.

P Rivers --> Indy

Reminds me of when I go through a drive through & order a coke to go with my burger & dude says, “We don’t have coke.”

I don’t really mind, because I didn’t really want a coke. I wanted a cola. But I say coke in generic sense, meaning cola, I don’t care about brand.

Then he says, “We’ve got Dr Pepper.” & I’m like, “Cool.”

KC has $6m cap and no place to get much more. I'm watching how they handle Chris Jones and pay Mahomes. Can they afford allowing Jones to sit out a season?

No Offers For Giants’ Markus Golden?
July 1st, 2020 at 9:53am CST by Zach Links

Thanks to the rarely used unrestricted free agent tender, Giants edge rusher Markus Golden has a one-year, $4.125MM offer on the table. Or, he can sign with a new club between now and the upcoming deadline. So far, it doesn’t sound like the former second-round pick has received any outside offers, according to Ralph Vacchiano of SNY.

Golden has until July 22nd or the start of training camp (whichever date comes later) to ink the Giants’ one-year placeholder. At last check, the NFL is aiming to start camp on July 28th, which gives him an extra week to scare up a deal.

The former second-rounder showed flashes during his four seasons in Arizona, including a 12.5-sack season in 2016. Then, he was hampered by injuries. After he landed a one-year, $3.75MM deal with the Giants last year, he turned in a fully healthy season with 72 tackles and 10 sacks. Those numbers would usually spell lucrative offers, but teams probably see Golden’s sack numbers as a fluke, The 29-year-old generated just 26 pressures last year, an indicator that he might not repeat with double-digit sack totals in 2020.

******************************************************************

A 2019 "fluke"? Could be. But to me as likely, if not more likely that 2018 may have been the fluke. Golden missed most of 2017 to an ACL. He did not perform well in 2018, which shouldn't be a great surprise. Last year, he excelled..............It didn't help that the Giants moved him that year to DE from OLB...........and if you remember what I've posted in the past (re. Clowney), the DE 3-point stance puts tremendous stress on a knee compared to a 2-point stance of an OLB.

He could be a relatively cheap pickup and a potentially decent pass rush addition for the Texans.

A.J. Bouye: I didn’t know how to handle everything that went wrong in Jacksonville

Bouye was asked during the interview what went wrong for the Jaguars after they came close to knocking off New England in that game and couldn’t point to one thing as the reason why they couldn’t sustain that success. He said it seemed that everything that “could happen” did happen, including players being driven by ego, a lack of innovation in the game plan and what he called “the Tom Coughlin thing” in reference to the former exec’s acrimonious relationship with some players.

“I just never was a part of something like that,” Bouye said. “Being in Houston before that and even seeing how the guys in Denver just gelling together with the chemistry between the players and the coaches. It was just something different and I didn’t know how to handle that. . . . It was so many things. From fighting in the locker room and disagreements to people wanting to be gone, I’ve just never seen that before.”

Man Bouye sounds like such a fraud honestly. Hardly anyone here wanted to pay him all of that money on that contract, because they knew an article like this year later would be around. He was good the first year there, but look at it now. I'd hardly call Houston this great team of chemistry either while he was here and after. I seem to remember multiple players foolishly acting like Bob McNair was some sort of slave owner to them and running out of the organization premises and all of the problems people have with O'Brien or whatever. Just funny to see Bouye trashing the Jags organization, but acting like Houston was this great standard of team chemistry and synergy.

The Jags players definitely blew their load though. Talk about totally train wrecking with such a nice young nucleus. It had nothing to do with Coughlin being the problem though. He built a nice roster and was a SB winning HC that knew what it took to win. Those young players with terrible egos ruined their team.

They all loved themselves and money more than football. Jags partially to blame for throwing those huge FA contracts around and focusing on winning the offseason

Well I think they had to in some degree because they had so much cap space to use even on the minimum side. Ramsey really played a number on them and I'd ever root for that guy after seeing him pull a hold out in the beginning of the season once it started with no warning what so ever that is was coming. That seemed to really loosen up their locker room in the wrong way and it was already heading in that direction. Their defense was scary as hell the season before. One of the best I've seen actually.

This more than implies that it takes a smart QB to run the Patriots offense.

Cam Newton begins studying the Patriots’ “calculus”-like playbook

Posted by Michael David Smith on July 9, 2020, 11:21 AM EDT

Cam Newton officially signed with the Patriots on Wednesday, and he’s now at work studying the playbook.
Newton posted on Instagram a picture of himself studying his new team’s playbook, and he wrote that teammate Julian Edelman has warned him that it’s not easy.

“This s–t calculus!” Newton wrote, attributing that quote to Edelman.

Most of Newton’s offensive teammates have been with the Patriots before and played for coach Bill Belichick and offensive coordinator Josh McDaniels, and so they’re used to doing the calculus it takes to learn the playbook. Newton will need to be up to speed to start when the season starts in Week One.

The Patriots have settled the outstanding grievances regarding Antonio Brown's and Aaron Hernandez's contracts...........resulting in the freeing up of more than $7 million in cap space for the Patriots.................just in time, since the Patriots were almost completely out of cap space.

Washington has just fired their Director of Pro Personnel and Assistant Director of Pro Personnel..................while the NFL enters a situation where there will no doubt be a need to replace players (COVID)..........know other teams' players for trade purposes........know FAs.............know PS players...........even follow the waiver wire carefully. Their GM has been a miserable failure over the years performing these duties. I don't see how these last moves do anything but worsen the situation.

I know I wanted Mahomes over DW4

But imagine if you were a Jags fan and Bortles was your QB and you passed on Mahomes for Fournette and his bad ankles.

Doesn't look good for Cowboys signing a new contract for Prescott...................evidently, there have been no negotiations since March.

If you need a QB you spend what it takes to get your guy. This has been a major failing of the Texans org throughout the yrs.

I think we should have drafted Aaron Rodgers instead of Travis Johnson & I guess with hindsight we should have drafted that Russell Wilson guy.

but I was shocked New England drafted a QB before our 3.1 pick &. I was equally shocked when a team traded up to the 10th spot to draft a QB in 2017. KC even more surprising.

I don’t fault anyone for “missing” on those two. Now if I were to hear we had issues where everyone knew what we were going to do, making it easier for them to draft around us, then I’d be upset.

It's not 20/20 hindsight. Look back at my posts and you will see in the last 7 yrs I've want 2 QB's that were getable, Jimmy G/Mahomes. You make sure you go up and get the QB you want or somebody else will. Very simple and you would've thought RS would've learned this after what happened with Jimmy G.

Remember after the Mahomes draft when I told you the Texans org was going to regret not trading up for Mahomes?

I referenced Russell Wilson when I said hindsight.

I think if the Texans wanted Mahomes it was reasonable to target him at 12. Just didn’t work out. Who’s to say if we had a deal to trade up to 10, KC wouldn’t have gone to 8. & if we had a deal to go to 8, KC wouldn’t have gone to 6?

The only way to be sure is to trade up to #1

If anything they should regret not bringing Arians in. IMO, Arians + Watson gets you closer to a Super Bowl than BO’b + Tom Brady in his prime.

I mean we saw him fail running an offense with the GOAT.
