Watson & Tunsil Contracts

This isn't geared at Watson or Tunsil but I just don't see how 3 year deals would be good for a team or the league. I get the shorter commitment time in case the player doesn't pan out. However a good, young, premium position player could rake you over the coals in the followup deal even if they stay at the level that garnered the 1st extension.

Call it the Lebron curse. He started these short contracts in the NBA. Now it has made it to the NFL.

I have scoured the entire ProFootballTalk website...................and I can assure you that there is no mention of anything to do with a pending Watson contract.

These people be quoting some irrelevant stuff like it’s the gospel. They read it here and now it’s brought up every time Watson and money is brought up. Watson is not about to eat up the cap space. I guess we didn’t just pay Tunsil big time money. Oh I guess we can say Mahomas won’t win another SB nor will Jackson once they get big time mega contracts. The Eagles can hang it up too
Hasn't happened in the cap era.

You can live in denial if you wish.

If there's a QB that can pull it off it's Mahomes.

What do you mean salary or salary cap shouldn't be brought up? We have a salary cap. That means we have to strategize on how to build the team and how much money we can allocate to each position. What we pay Watson (The highest paid player on the team when we do) will greatly dictate how we can build the team afterwards and with whom. He has to be good enough to justify a certain salary amount.
Very easy to understand when posters dont live in the world of denial.

Hedging their bets on how good DW4 is.

If he hasn't progressed after yr 6 then it will be time to move on. Basically this contract is buying this yr, the option yr, and 1 franchise yr.

A short term deal where D4 gets his $$$$ upfront seems fair.

Watson isn't about to eat up the cap space ?

I don't find any confirmation on that extension someone posted on the last page ....

But at $38m .... thats 19.2% of this years cap and 26.87% of the projections for 2021.

Even if we assume some recovery of the cap for 2022 , the first year of the actual extension - Its going to be a significant percentage of the cap total - above the 19.2% it equates to for this year.

Nope , he's not gonna eat up the cap ....

Yikes.

So you’re in so much denial on anything that could possibly be construed as a knock on Watson, that you cannot even admit he will eat up cap space on his next contract?! Why is it you are so emotionally involved in a good but not great NFL quarterback?

Most people on here can see he’s potentially a pretty good qb, but with flaws. He’s not elite. But you, for some reason, cannot admit the slightest hint of any disadvantage or weakness, even inregards to his salary? Something you are easily proven wrong, and already have been several times over, with simple math. So what is your deal?

Lmao why are you so worried about the Texans quarterback period. He's currently top 10 in people who actually gets paid to break these things down, as well as ex coaches and players.

Top 10 in people who get paid to break these things down (whatever that means) but more importantly, Top 1 in your life. It’s bizarre, and I’d like to know why.

Yes, 100% proven wrong, in this thread. You obviously are completely ill equipped to respond to what Texecutioner and Corrosion directly responded to you, so you won’t. Because you can’t.

To summarize:
Watson looking for a 3 year extension, back on the market in 2025.
Look for Watson to get $2-3 million more AAV than Prescott's extension (done by 7/15).
Look for Mahomes to get higher AAV on a 5 year extension.
100% agree

Well due to the 15% rule, at least we can rule them out as contenders. Lol

Well ... what we don't know is if his cap hit this year or next changed or not - $5.3 and something similar to Watson's $17m in 21 - the 5th year option. If those figures didn't change , they'll have a two year window before the extension kicks in. After that , we have to see where the cap is in those years beyond 2021.

How this is structured really matters.

Yeah , when he is eating up a quarter of the cap , they'll have a hard time putting a team around him , no doubt. Exactly what I'm concerned with for the Texans and Watson.
$47m is just shy of a quarter of this years unadjusted cap .... that's crazy.

To think its taken only 40 years to go from the first million dollar contract in sports to a half billion dollar contract .... wow.

This is very similar to what I said in a previous post in regards to Watson. People were just spit-balling... he wants $40 mil/year, we'll never win at that amount.

I was arguing... let's wait until we see what he really signs for and how the contract is structured, before we go all doom & gloom.

I'm just glad Mahomes didn't give a "Brady-like" discount, or else we could have been in some real trouble for a while.

Watson also has 2 years left on his existing contract. If the Texans were to sign Watson for 120M over 3 seasons they would secure his services through the 2024 season while making him an UFA in 2025. As another poster mentioned.....the Texans could front load the contract with payouts in 2020-2021 thus reducing the cap impact over the final 3 years of what would more than likely be a guaranteed contract.

With Mahomes contract in the books.....the Texans are going to have to make a decision or in layman terms.....shite or get off the pot. My fear, the Mahomes contract probably knocks Watson's trade value way down as teams would be extremely hesitant to give up value picks for a QB they'll have to pony up 40M dollars a season to so he can wear their uniform.

Man, the onus of overseeing Watson really take the next step will fall squarely on the shoulders of O'Brien. He could justify his trade value or the money the Texans would spend in order to retain his services. Hey OB, you may have turned the OC hat over to Kelly but his failure will be 100% your failure.....so I would make it a priority to get this offense in the endzone as often as possible b/c there should be no such thing as a "safe" lead for 2020.

He kinda did , at least in the first 3 years of the deal .... averaging $21.025m 2020-2022.

1. In 2020: $10.825 million.

2. In 2021: $22.8 million (base salary of $990,000, roster bonus of $21.7 million, and workout bonus of $100,000 in 2021).

3. In 2022: $29.45 million (base salary of $1.5 million, roster bonus of $27.4 million, and workout bonus of $550,000 in 2022).

4. In 2023: $40.45 million (base salary of $5.5 million, roster bonus of $34.4 million, and workout bonus of $550,000 in 2023).

If Watson can be retained to an approximation of those three years, it will be helpful. I still would like to add to this rosters this year.

That's both parties understanding the short term economic situation and the unknown impact of COVID-19. If that is a discount, he will make up for it when:

"Next is the guarantee structure of the deal. The big year on the contract comes in 2027, when Mahomes has a $10 million base salary and a roster bonus of $49.4 million. He'll make $59.5 million in cash that year, which is a staggering sum to think about by NFL standards."

That 2027 figure guarantees on the third day of the league year in 2026, which is why the window for a new Mahomes deal would likely be before that deadline hits. At that point, he will be staring at a six-year, $294.2 million contract with just under $42 million already guaranteed. An average annual salary of just over $49 million per year might sound great right now, but if the cap hits $300 million in 2025, that would amount to only 16.3% of the cap. If he continues to play at this level, he's going to deserve more money and get a higher percentage of that money guaranteed. Mahomes will be 31 in 2026 and could reasonably sign a restructured contract with an added year or two or a new deal altogether.

Those first three years being "Cheap" and that article is saying pretty much everything I have in terms of the cap going forward ... He'll never see that $60m year , unless the cap is above $300m , they'll restructure it.

In the mean time , 21m per is a hell of a deal for the Chiefs

Deshaun Watson doesn't deserve nearly that much money because Deshaun Watson will never achieve his true potential so long as Bill O'Brien is in power.

Simple as that.
In even more simpler terms, he doesn’t deserve that much money, because he isn’t nearly as good as Mahomes.

How they made that work is simple.

This is an extension.

Mahomes has 2 years (this and next) remaining on his current contract.

He was given $10m up front which is prorated over the next two seasons making his $5.3m cap hit for 2020 $10.3m and his ~$17m cap hit for 2021 22m .... then the new contract starts in 2022 with a cap hit of $29m in the first year.
It doesn't get costly for the Chiefs until the 2023 season which is at $40m.

I don't think his agent did a very good job at all , unless they were purposely giving the team a break - leaving money on the table to bring in more talent around him.

He wont see those $60m seasons before his deal is reworked ...

Watson may never reach his full potential as a player under OB, but I wouldn't bet against him reaching his full potential in a contract agreement under OB.
