Mercilus was a product of RAC not playing him in the right position for nearly three seasons bc of Clowney and Watt. He was asked to play in positions he shouldn’t have been in so others could be the edge players. Last season was his first back primarily on the edge since 2015.
Watt and Clowney played the edge because they were better than Mercilus. Still are. Mercilus had 5.5 sacks in weeks 1-7, with Watt in the lineup. 2 sacks the remainder of the season with Watt out. Both against the Bucs (good luck there, Brady).

Mercilus lives of the attention and pressure Watt provides. He's the guy that sweeps up after the bull wrecks the china shop.

Sounds like a 4 year, $54M extension guy to me.

Mercilus had 4 forced fumbles with Watt in there. Watt was the recipient of one of those fumbles. When Mercilus was out there with Watt, each benefited from the other's presence. Once Watt went out, Mercilus did not have an effective Watt substitute on the other side, in addition to the fact that the inside DL with their poor pass rush didn't help take any pressure off of the OLBs

I truly believe he is gone after 2021, it would net $8M in savings. His 2021 salary became fully vested somewhere near 24 March 2020. IDK why the NFL uses all the eye-catching numbers when reporting contracts. Surely the teams, players and agents know the true values.

For some on this board, the last sentence would certainly seem to be the case.
Some never mention the word regression in certain company. Waiting for the pain to come but the pain gonna make everything alright.

Some choose to bury their heads in the sand.

That would be you sir. And no Watson did not regressed.
Really,

Look back at his rookie year and look where he is now, with the same HC, In a way I hope BOB gets fired because it would stop the excuse makers. But if a new HC was hired we both know the excuse makers would just find new ways to make excuses.

Rookie year he had the fastest average release time in the league ….

The last two seasons that hasn't been the case while the sack rate increased right along with the release times - more pronounced in 2018 than 19.

All with an improved OL that OB spent a plethora of high draft picks on.

Really makes you wonder why? How did BOB's offense get so bad? Did he suffer brain trauma?

This regression shouldn't have happened, unless DC's have caught up with DW4's game.

It's happened with other QB's in the past.

The offense changed. They went from quick and short routes, which was the Dabo Swinney offense to O’Briens version of the EP offense. In that particular offense most of the routes are long and slow. There are not that many short intermediate routes being ran in this version.

I can’t believe a member who is very football savvy didn’t pick that up. But then again whenever a person has an agenda, they will come up with any freaking thing.

No agenda,

Why would BOB change from an offense where his QB didn't have to think to an offense where he not only had to read defenses but make OL calls. This explanation makes no sense to me.

Dude stop flipping back and forth. You said on numerous occasions that O’Brien simplified his offense a lot . Not only that O’Brien said after Watson’s rookie year that we were going to see a different offense. You then thought Watson was too stupid to run a pro offense and lobbed for the Texans to go back and run Clemsons offense.

Houston ranked as worst off-season.

What went wrong: The Texans traded away arguably their second-best player for pennies on the dollar because he wanted a new contract and then overpaid for just about every one of their offseason additions. Even if they hadn't traded wide receiver DeAndre Hopkins and a swap of fourth-rounders for a second-round pick and running back David Johnson's bloated contract, this would be a disaster.

Yeah this has been discussed numerous times. The Hopkins trade will go down as one of the worst trades of the modern era.

This isn't an answer to the question I asked.

Why did BOB start using a more complicated offense?

Just depends how Cooks/Blacklock/DJ and the 2021 4th end up playing.
Not really. If they end up being really good, it would be more of a fluke and luck, than some sort of genius plan on BOBs behalf. The trade is bad no matter how you look at it - retrospective analysis will not make BOB look any better, just luckier.

The team will be fine without Hopkins.

Why is it if these guys do well it's a fluke? They're all very talented players.

That is not what I said. I said if they do well, it will look like a fluke good trade on BOBs behalf. If they do well, it will be 100 percent on the players and will not make BOB look any smarter for making this trade. Like if Johnson has an awesome season and does well, and gets himself in perfect shape and has a great season, I will credit Johnson, and will not think that BOB knew this would happen and is some sort of genius for trading for him.

Oh, OK

SMDH, if this happens BOB should get the credit for making a good trade and the media should be ashamed of themselves. I guess I forgot some posters aren't willing to give BOB credit for anything.

I will give credit, where credit is due. BOB got rid of Hopkins as fast as he could and took the 1st decent offer that came his way. He could have easily traded Hopkins and upgraded at defense instead, and resigned Hyde later at a cheaper price. There are many other options BOB could have went with that would have been smarter.

You dont know any of this. Hopkins was on the block for over a yr. BOB took the best deal he could get. Hyde wanted a multi yr deal, do you think it would be a good idea to sign Hyde to a multi yr deal?

I wouldn't have let DJ be part of the deal if it was me either. I would've used DJ's $$$$ to upgrade the defense. But we know the Texans org doesn't spend $$$$ in FA and this goes back long before BOB got here.

I still have a hard time with OB’s statement that Hopkins was on the market for more than a year with no offers. I’m just not going to buy OB’s “cover my arse” statement. OB the GM is being abused by other NFL GM’s. Has OB made any move where he got the better end of the stick?

Maybe...maybe not.

Just as it takes time to grade a teams draft, the same could be said about trades and free agent signings.

While many will agree with this guy's initial assessment the proof will be in the final result.
(FTR I agree, but hope I'm wrong)

Bill O’Brien if he truly said this crap needs to stop the nonsense. It’s like he’s still butt hurt. Move the bleep on and worry about your roster.

Dude wtf do we always have to repeat what’s already been said. You darn well we we’re running Clemson offense during that time.
So BOB hasn't been running his offense from day one with DW4.

I seem to recall when I said they were running the Clemson offense posters said I was wrong.

If the Clemson offense is the only offense that DW4 can run effectively that says something. Like he ain't worth 35-40 mil per yr.

He has moved on it's just some fans that cant seem to move on.

Life will go on just fine without Hopkins.

Just to be clear, he WANTED a multi year deal. He’s been sitting as a free agent for quite a while again and will end up settling with another one year prove-it deal. It’s expected for a RB coming off a good year to want a multi year deal, but when no one bites he changes his tune. Guarantee you we could have him back at another 1 year deal soon (not that we want that now, but hypothetically).

C'mon SteelB get real !
Along with Andre Johnson and JJ Watt, Hopkins is arguably one of the three best football players the Texans have ever had, and therefor
his kind of talent doesn't just walk away and leave the roster unscathed.

I’m really wondering how they’re gonna reopen fans allowed at stadiums. Like only 50% capacity at first? The reopening of stadiums and venues is gonna be a ….

More likely than not , no fans in the stands.

Soccer and NASCAR did that this past weekend and golf is suppose to do the same this coming week.

That Clemson offense was enough for the Texans to lead the NFL in scoring during that stretch with Watson....not to mention Watson set some rookie records along the way. That was the only blip on the 6 year OB "Offensive Life Alert Monitor". Instead of building on that success, OB chose to go backwards as he pushed his tried and true but unsuccessful offense.

Agreed, this is the reason I want DW4 to run the Clemson offense.

But this isn't what TB said

Oh I know at first there will be no fans. I’m just wondering when there is what the protocol will be. Gradually allowing X amount of fans, or just reopen everything and allow 60,000+ fans all at once when there’s a vaccine.

Yes, they did that this past weekend. The start of the NFL season though, is 4 months away. If we’re still doing all of this BS then, shame on us. They’re opening bars back up Friday. Things are slowly coming back. I see no reason it won’t be much further along in 4 months.

Flattening the curve is one thing. Staying shut down until nobody ever dies again is another.

This is my main thought. Obviously until there is a vaccine, nothing will ever return to "normal", but I am just wondering in 4 months how they will proceed with fans. If there is no vaccine, I am sure there will still be some sort of rules set in place, like only 50 percent capacity, etc., etc.

I’m not certain if the same social distancing guidelines are in place over there, but here they say 2 meters. At that level it’s difficult to envisage getting to 50% capacity. You’re talking probably 3 seats between each fan and every second row off limits? The Jags might not have an issue.

It’s 6 feet between people for social distancing (probably the same as your 2 meters) and I’m wondering if that’ll be the same in 4 months. With bars and restaurants opening obviously you can’t keep 6 feet between you at a table, so I’m sure in 4 months those rules will change. If they’re allowing gatherings of 10 or less at a restaurant now, who knows what it’ll be in the next few months. Even now those rules only apply to people outside your household so 6 people in a household could all sit together at a game.
