Texans random thought of the day

How do you define step up? A statistically proficient offense or winning the AFCCG?
It still blows me away that we won the division last year and had more points against than points for (378 for, 385 against). We need to convincingly win our division scoring significantly more points for than against, and contend in the playoffs.

I'm one who believes Watson has figured it out. His stats are very comparable to all the top QBs in the league despite BO'b

We all know about the statistics …. and they are often empty.

I really find it hard to evaluate Watson because of the scheme …. but he does leave a lot of yards that are there to be had looking for more. He's got to take those easy ones.

I know one thing for certain - He lost his best offensive weapon and arguably the leagues best WR. Hard to expect him to perform better when you take away that much talent.

Well, I'm hoping (just like I hoped last year) that BO'b has learned he needs to step back & focus on headcoaching & not offense coaching. Like I said, it's hope. Hope that Watson, Kelly, & Carl Smith put together an offense that takes advantage of our talent.

The definition of insanity …. doing the same thing expecting a different result. How many years we going on now with OB ?

Where'd RAC go? He might not be on the sidelines on game day, but he's going to be there throughout the week. Weaver is on training wheels.

He might be giving input but …. I'm not expecting much , especially considering they lost their defensive anchor up front and the lack of talent on the back end.

I'm definitely not arguing that they got better. Just addressing the points I quoted. I'm not convinced we've gotten better, but I've been saying the same things three years running & things turn out better than I expected. So who knows. Buy plenty of whiskey.

Last year I was one of the few who expected 12+ wins and a top 2 seed …. They blew that losing to three sub .500 teams.

This year - They took a step back talent wise while the rest of the division got better.

I see a team that goes something between 6-10 to 8-8.

If injuries hit bad 6-10

I expected 11 wins & with the way the season went I consider it an 11 win season. If we needed to win week 17, I'm sure we would have.

I expected an AFCCG appearances. I don't know why. I should have expected an embarrassing loss. Before the game I was thinking, "well if we lose, it won't be at home."

Then they jumped out 24-0... man I was listing my daughters on Craigslist so I could buy Super Bowl tickets.

I should have known.

What are your expectations for the coming season ?!

My expectations is for BO'b to find a way to get this team to the AFCCG. That's what all this craziness is about.

Whether we're the Div Champs or Wildcard or the lucky 7th playoff team. Whether we finish 13-3 or 7-9, I really don't care.

It's about getting to the playoffs (which for a team like Dallas last year meant 9 wins) & getting to the Conference Championship.

I think BO'b will do it. That's my expectation.

What gives you any inclination that Bo'b will pull this off minus his best offensive weapon , best run defender & a rag tag bunch in the secondary ?

John McClain was saying that Texans will receive a 3rd round comp for DJ Reader in 2021.
Should be able to move up some with 3 3rds.

He’s wrong. The Texans signed more free agents then they lost. No comp picks next draft.

The Texans could do no wrong in the first few minutes of that game. I was absolutely dumbfounded.
And then it all fell apart....

thats on OBrien ... fake punt? With a damn safety who hadnt run the ball since high school?? then the guy nuts up and doesnt go for it on 4th and inches on the KC 20, but he will go for it on 4th and 4 on his own damn side of the field?? Gave away every ounce of momentum he had, and then was too scared and confused to lead the team out of the panic.

If Bill O’Brien win 11 wins as well as take this team to the AFCCG against this tough ash schedule. Man they better build BO’B statue outside of the stadium shortly afterwards. Lol

11 wins is possible. With 6 games within our division, Indy and Tennessee are the wildcards in how we do. The 2 biggest questions for me is if the Titans can keep their momentum rolling from last year and what impact Phillip Rivers will have in Indy. Our 4 games against them could be the difference between 6-7 wins or 9-10 wins.

The Texans have almost always had a winning record in our division in the O'Brien era.

2014: 4-2 .667
2015: 5-1 .833
2016: 5-1 .833
2017: 1-5 .167
2018: 4-2 .667
2019: 4-2 .667

Outside the division O'Brien has a sub 500 record.

AFC South: 23-13 .639
All Others: 29-31 .483

So in my opinion it's crucial that we do well in 2020 against our division rivals.

Our offense sucked the last couple of years. Our defense sucked the last couple of years.

I don't believe losing our best offensive/run defender affects whatever it is that generates wins for this team.

BO'b is doing something right. I don't know what it is. But it's what this team was missing when we had the leading passer one year, leading receiver the next year, the leading rusher the year after that. The DROY, the defensive MVP, top 5 offense, top 5 defense.

Sum of the parts... I just don't know how the math works yet.

You've been the eternal optimist for as many years as we've discussed this franchise … I wouldn't have it any other way.

Historically I have been more about improving quality of play than wins. Some prefer sloppy wins but not I. It is about competition and the opponent knows he was bettered. The 2019 championship meant nothing to me as it led nowhere. I think all positions can be better and should be.

WAIT A D MINUTE! I thought I was the eternal optimist and then OptimistTexan came along and then that guy that set up the weekly game threads whom never posts anymore and now you are trying to give my title to someone else? Not now not today not ever! To be the man you got to beat the man; as my dear friend and coke head Ric Flair used to say (then he went on disability).

TK has been here longer than you …. and has always been sunshine and rainbow optimist …. He's the guy who after 6 seasons of suck expects OB to suddenly figure it all out.

Can you beat that type of optimism ?!

So, our lofty (and sadly, they are lofty ) expectations are for the Texans to play in the AFCCG. Yippee!

My tempered but realistic expectations of the Texans are, one more playoff appearance followed by a long playoff drought. I don’t see them trending in a positive direction. Maybe a sort of minor league team for other teams. As soon as a guy starts to make a name for himself O’Brien will trade him for a bag of popcorn.

TK is a fence straddler. He’s crushed a many of fences over the last 6 or 7 weeks with his straddling. This is his position on O’Brien summed up into one simple sentence:

“I hate him but he might be on to something, it might just work or he might be a dumbass”

It's those sunshine and rainbows …. He wants to believe this team is going to win …. despite OB.

I see last season as that last playoff appearance and the drought starting now …. again , because the other teams in the division got better and the Texans went backwards in terms of talent and they have won on sheer talent since OB got here - never has he schemed them to a win.

Our absolute biggest problem (other than BOB) is young talent. Look at the guys we are relying on this year. David Johnson, Duke Johnson, Brandin Cooks, Randall Cobb, Will Fuller, etc.... all aging vets and most injury prone. Youth is not on our side, and I agree, when these guys start calling it quits soon, we are screwed.

Kinda. I hate BO'b, no doubt about it.

But the way we did things before, didn't work. I'm ready to accept that what I think I know is wrong.

So far, I don't understand how we've won with the crap BO'bs been doing. But we're winning.

What will all his crazy stuff get us? I don't know.

What will it cost us? I don't know.

Either way, BO'bs a dumass.

Will it be worth it? I hope so.

"Winning" is a debatable term here. We are winning with mediocrity. We are above average winning. However I would not consider us a "winning" team. I will not consider us a "winner" until we can at least play in a conference final. This constant flirting with wild card games and losing divisional round games is not cutting it anymore.

Nothing this franchise has done the last few years makes much sense to me …. aside from drafting Watson of course - that was a real no brainer as they had to take a QB at that point.

Its almost as if OB is doing his best to help Watson fail ….. I know there's a lot of what if's and second guessing but eventually even a blind squirrel finds a nut …. but OB has been a complete and total failure from play calling to game management , time outs , challenges to trades and roster management and contract negotiations.

When OB showed up , we had a pretty solid roster missing a QB , now the script has flipped , we have a pretty solid QB without a whole lot of talent around him , what talent there is , is beyond its peak and no assets / draft capital to show for it.

I really think last year was their "All In" year and they came up short.

No early draft picks next season , paying Tunsil and Watson a combined ~$40m in 2021 and that gets worse when (If) they extend Watson ….. and a bunch of aging players around them , its not likely they improve the team in the near future.

IF this team isn't able to make it to at least the AFC-CG , my hope is that they dump OB and start from scratch - trade everything of value for premium draft picks , hire a competent GM with a history of quality drafting …. along with a new HC.

3 other teams in the AFCS and most of the teams in the NFL would give most everything to have the Texans record since 2014
So? I don’t care what worse teams would give. I’m not hoping for “above average”. I think we have potential to be a powerhouse. Both divisional games vs KC and NE we were the underdogs. Teams should be scared to play us. No one takes us seriously as a real championship contender.
