NFL Random Thought of the Day

The NFL competition committee is reviewing whether PI replay will be allowed this season. It was only a 1 year "experiment" with renewal to be determined after thorough review of its effectiveness.

101 PI reviews took place this season. 24 were overturned (24%). It was really bad early on where just 5 challenges were overturned in the 1st 53 challenges (9%). That means of the last 48 challenges, 19 were overturned (39%).

I hope it goes by the wayside. What needs to be done is to get rid of the spot foul on PI. Make it a 15 yd penalty from LOS. The spot foul is stupid, imo.

Disagree why should there only be a 15 yd penalty when you are throwing a bomb into the EZ from say the 50 yd line. If I was a cb and got beat I would tackle the we every time. The 15 yd penalty gives too much advantage to the defense.

Tend to agree. Why only a 15 yard pen if the ball was thrown for 25, or 30 or whatever it happened to be?
Now 15 yard minimum would be interesting - might see teams more prepared to throw the shorter passes.

Can't disagree with this more.
We'll agree to disagree then. No problem. I just think that it is unfair to the defense for the offense to chuck up a prayer a the end of the half, two minute warning situation, only to have the refs toss a flag for a "questionable" PI call. Ball is spotted at the foul spot. Automatically puts the offense in FG or scoring position when it probably wasn't PI in the first place. Give the offense a the first down and 15 yds from LOS. Still very favorable to the offense.
just don't like it, that's all.

Well, the questionable PI calls I can get with you on. I just think it's unfair to the offense to have a big play wiped away on a PI. And yeah, I get that there's many more rules that favor the offense, but still. A defender can get burned, intentionally interfere, and know it's only going to cost his team 15 instead of 40 or more, or whatever the spot is.

The PI call does have to get better though, especially the BS way they did the challenges last year.

Ian Rapoport has reported that the Colts are interested in Rivers. Logistically, this doesn't seem to be a sound possibility, as Rivers says he has made it publicly clear that he wants to live with his family now in Florida.

Tampa Bay Vipers would probably like to bring him in......wonder how he would look in green and yellow?

If the Bucs or Dolphins had any interest in signing Rivers, they'd still be going into the 2020 NFL Draft with a new QB high on their list.

Maybe have Jameis watch a proven vet for a year in hopes he can learn how to cut down on his mistakes. But Rivers may want to play for 2 or 3 more years which blows up my theory. If that's the case, I believe Arians would take Rivers for a few years and dump Jameis in the process.

Hawks' Steve Koonin believes starting NBA season in December would help ratings
Mar 6, 2020
Tim BontempsESPN

BOSTON -- Atlanta Hawks CEO Steve Koonin has a plan to increase the NBA's ratings: start and end the season two months later.

Koonin spoke Friday at the MIT Sloan Sports Analytics Conference in Boston on a panel about possible changes to the league's schedule. The panel was moderated by ESPN's Kevin Arnovitz.

"Relevance equals revenue," Koonin said. "We've got to create the most relevance, and the revenue will fix itself.

Under Koonin's proposal, the start of the NBA season would shift from mid-October to mid-December, after college football has completed its regular season and has begun its bowl season. More important, the shift would allow the NBA to avoid having to compete with the NFL's regular season, as it currently does in the first 2½ months before the "unofficial" start to the league's calendar on Christmas Day.

The Cowboys have supposedly offered Prescott and average salary of $33 million with a guaranteed contract of $105 million. No mention of signing bonus or other fully-guaranteed payments at the time the deal is signed. Although I can't find the length of the proposed contract, I believe it would be 4 year.

The Cowboys talked with Prescott’s agent, Todd France, either in person or by phone twice since the end of the 2019 season.

NFL cancels its annual meeting
March 12, 2020, 2:31 PM EDT

In a move that is surprising only in that it took so long for it to happen, the NFL has canceled its annual meeting.

The yearly get-together, scheduled this year for The Breakers in Palm Beach, Florida, consists of various sessions that ultimately produce rule changes for the coming year. The league has delayed possible rule changes and other agenda items until the next meeting, set for May 19-20.

Much of the late March event centers around socializing and media access. Given the critical importance of social distancing as Americans try to limit the spread of the coronavirus, it was obvious that the event would be canceled.

Next for the league comes decisions regarding the draft, along with the possibility of altering its plan to let free agency proceed as scheduled next week.

Hasn't the NFL ever heard of Skype or teleconferencing?

Tannehill has signed a new contract with the Titans. It runs 4 years with a total value of $118 million. The average of $29.5 million per year with $62 million fully guaranteed and $91 million in total guarantees..............a $20 million signing bonus, a guaranteed $17.5 million base salary for 2020 and a guaranteed $24.5 million base salary for 2021..........so as I've pointed out in the past, multi-year contracts are actually only 2 year "binding" contracts.

The NFL has announced that free agency will not be delayed. The NFLPA turned down the NFL's request to delay it (and per new CBA, a decision to change anything in the season must be approved by both parties. So it officially starts on Wednesday at 4:00 p.m. ET................while the "tampering"/negotiating period begins tomorrow opens at noon ET.
