2019 1.23 TYTUS HOWARD OT Alabama State

Are you happy with our first round pick?

Not to sound pessimistic because we have yet to see Howard play but I really do think he could benefit from an entire season/off-season in an NFL program.

When Rankin came in, I also mentioned that he was carrying a lot of bad weight. It sounds like he has come into OTA's with a bigger upper body and a slimmer waist. I think Howard will need the same thing before we see the 1st round investment. (Probably why he is getting initial work at guard)
From all accounts it sounds like he is athletic enough.
He is going to have to make his fair share of rookie mistakes so why not start him asap? The sooner the better.
Cant keep him wrapped in cotton wool for ever.

I didn't mean redshirt him, I meant, he might struggle getting acclimated to NFL edge rushers his rookie year so start him at guard to get him live action before pushing him to the outside. We know he has the feet to keep up, he just needs to get stronger and trim some bad weight before moving to the outside.

That may have been their thinking with Howard. A lock at RT, possible LT. He's still developing into a Tackle. Just three years ago he was small enough to play TE, along with the athleticism required to play TE.

They'll have a year with him to decide if he should make the move to LT, or if they should draft one.

Drafting a possible RT when we needed a LT is the reason why most people had a problem with the pick. I think he can be a solid RT in time. There were other guys in the draft picked later who will be better RT's. It was a reach pick. And he's not a Left Tackle. Double Whammy

I'm sorry did you have a point other than naming random OTs? Williams hasn't played one NFL game yet so its a little early to hold him up as an example, Robinson had a decent year but really wasn't anything special and then went out early the next season, I'll grant you Smith had a great rookie year. Just because a guy is made a starter his rookie year doesn't mean its the best choice. Just like if Watson could have got to ride the bench a season behind a vet like Mahomes did he could have been even better.

Saying a rookie will be the starter is different than saying that they should be the starter.

All of them started as rookies and played well . You said not many rookies start and that is not true. Most 1st Rd rookies start and any of the guys I listed would be an upgrade over what started there last yr. Hopefully Howard can be added to the list.

Did his Combine numbers say great athlete to you?
5.05 forty better vertical than Dillard, but really it’s fact he played QB, TE before switching to OL.

Or you could just watch his movement skills for a man his size, he’s very fluid, no hip tightness like Mc Gary, really think sky is the limit if his work ethic matches.

I didn't see anything in that interview that said Howard was an elite athlete. I hope all of the draft experts are wrong and he's a top-notch left tackle. But, to me he looks like he'll be a solid starting RT in a year or two.

It was an interview, but what did Bucky say to begin the interview with?

Maybe his shorts issues contrlibuted to his subpar 3-cone, short shuttle etc... but not his 40 or his vertical.

Have the player here who most reminds me of Tytus, some TE named Jason Peters. Was any good playing LT :kingkong:
Peters combine numbers were better than Howard’s across the board. Also, Peters was an undrafted free agent. No one is dismissing Howard’s chances. It’s the draft capital spent and what the draft capital wasn’t spent on. It’s the fact that the Texan did little to address the position and then took a project with their 1st pick. That’s the issue.

Fully understand that but what are we going to do about it now? I would suggest hope for the best, that Texans front office, coaches and scouts are better @ their job projecting system fits and addressing need over collective on this board, hard as we try.

I really do appreciate your input, you contributed more than anyone here to navigate through a tough process. Your posts, always concise, informative and generally spot on. We all would have been happier if Texans had traded down then taken Howard, however it would have been a short window and risk too great that O’Brian, Devlin and Gaine would have lost their target. In three years nobody will complain Texans used their 1st rd pick on Tytus Howard.

I said lock at RT, possible LT. I think you're the only one saying he's a project RT.

Looks like a LT to me.

What did you think of the Eagles drafting Carson Wentz with the #2 overall pick?

I think this is very much the same. As good as Carson Wentz is, he is still developing into an NFL QB.

He came from a small school. Didn't play in an NFL offense. But caught the attention of many scouts. Impressed at the Senior Bowl.

The hoopla wasn't the same for Howard. He's not a QB or a pass rusher. & we didn't spend the #2 overall on him.

I'm not saying the Texans did the right thing. I have no idea & won't "know" until I see him own the position, either RT or LT (I'm one of those who thinks it makes sense to start inexperienced talent on the right side before moving to the left).

Peters combine numbers were better than Howard’s across the board. Also, Peters was an undrafted free agent.

Had to come back to these points you made. Both repped 220 21 times. Peters weighted in 336 vs Tytus 322. Jason Peters arm length was only 33.13” vs Tytus 34”. Hands on Peters 9.38” vs Tytus 10 5/8”. Shuttle times are all hand times, there are a lot of variables involved, back then also included 40 times which you add at least a 10th. Could keep going but point is Howard is not inferior prospect to Peters, who did go undrafted but guess what, game has changed and premiums have gone up and up on Tackles. Last point Eagles traded up ahead of Texans for a tackle in first round (as we all know too well) what if the guy drafted after Dillard winds up being the better Tackle, kinda like history repeating itself, well that’s my story and I’m sticking to it :ahhaha:

Is it disturbing to anyone else that Desmond Harrison just got released and that's who Tytus is compared to?
Not sure why anyone would make that comparison. The only real similarity is that he played at a small school...but that only happened after he was released from UT.

Super Athletic Offensive tackle. I mean you look at the intangibles everything lines up

Except one went in the 1st & one went UDFA.

Almost as if there was some reason for that.

One also had repeated HUGE off-the-field-field issues and one didn't.
One also started only 9 games and only played in 17 while the other started for 3 1/2 seasons.

That settles it,

No need to spend the $$$$ on Trent Williams.

Offense
Quarterback: Kyler Murray, Arizona Cardinals (1st round, No. 1 overall)
Running Back: Josh Jacobs, Oakland Raiders (1st round, No. 24 overall)
Wide Receiver: A.J. Brown, Tennessee Titans (2nd round, No. 51 overall)
Tight End: Noah Fant, Denver Broncos (1st round, No. 20 overall)
Offensive Tackle: Jawaan Taylor, Jacksonville Jaguars (2nd round, No. 35 overall)
Runner-up: Tytus Howard, Houston Texans (1st round, No. 23 overall) – Despite missing half the season due to injury, Howard was arguably the best rookie pass protector in the league this season. Lining up primarily at right tackle, his shuffle athleticism and ability to reset on the move allowed him to shut down edge rushers and maintain the integrity of the pocket. If he started 16 games (instead of only eight), he might have overtaken Taylor on the top line. Although he was labeled as a reach on draft day, Howard is well on his way to vindicating Houston for the selection and changing the narrative.
Offensive Guard: Elgton Jenkins, Green Bay Packers (2nd round, No. 44 overall) [Honorable Mentions: Max Scharping (Houston Texans)]
Offensive Center: Erik McCoy, New Orleans Saints (2nd round, No. 48 overall)

NFL All-Rookie Team

- A lot of competition for top WR
- Best first-year safety was an easy call
- Top rookie OT, OG and OC were all non-1st roundershttps://t.co/6FvFvNfPz9

Any word how Howard is healing up?? Seemed like something he should easily be ready for camp with
What injury did he have again?
Torn miniscus.
In October, all reports were that Howard suffered an MCL (later I confirmed a Grade II) and that no surgery was required (which it shouldn't)...........but then almost 2 months later, he underwent a medial meniscus repair. They evidently tried conservative rehab which usually takes ~6 week if it works.............it didn't and he was taken to surgery. The post surgical rehab should be completed in ~8-10 weeks. With his surgery having been performed the first week in Dec, he should be more than good to go and full strength by OTAs.

Rookie review: Tytus Howard found home at right tackle
Aaron Wilson , Houston Chronicle Jan. 17, 2020

Tytus Howard overcame a broken finger and a torn meniscus, embracing the learning curve that accompanied making the jump from Alabama State to emerge as a rookie starter.
Although the Texans’ first-round draft pick ultimately ended his season on injured reserve and underwent knee surgery, his first year in the league was a success story.
What Howard and the Texans learned during his half-season was this: He’s a natural right tackle, not a left tackle.

And his quickness and strength made him an immediate impact player in pass protection, walling off pass rushers. His run-blocking showed power as he was a good drive blocker against big defensive linemen. His overall technique still has room for improvement.

“I can compete at a high level,” Howard said. “Being consistent is a key for me. Being from a small school, it means a lot to start as a rookie and play at a high level. It’s a building block for next year.

“It just gives me more confidence knowing you played at a high level your rookie year. It gives you more energy and motivation. I can only get better from here and keep building. That’s my goal.”

The Texans are confident that they got it right by picking Howard. He was the offensive tackle they targeted throughout the draft process. Contrary to multiple reports and several assumptions, it wasn’t Washington State tackle Andre Dillard, who went to the Philadelphia Eagles in the first round.

The Texans zeroed in on Howard after meeting with him at the Senior Bowl and NFL scouting combine, where he ran the 40-yard dash in 5.05 seconds, and working him out privately and bringing him in for an official visit.
Signed to a four-year, $12.2 million guaranteed contract with a 2023 fifth-year club option, Howard had just five penalties and allowed only two sacks as a rookie.

“Tytus had a really good rookie year,” Texans coach Bill O’Brien said. “The guy was really playing well for us. Very tough, very physical, very athletic, great guy, great teammate. He was injured in the Kansas City game in October, and it was a tough injury.

“He tried to come back, he played with it, and then we decided to shut him down because it wasn’t going to be good for him. It was better for him to begin that rehab process and all those things, but he’s got a really bright future.”

Being recognized as an all-rookie choice (by several outlets including the Pro Football Writers of America) isn’t all that important to Howard even though it does represent a validation of his skills.

“It was pretty good, but, really, to be honest with you, that doesn’t mean that much to you,” Howard said. “I’m all about the team. It would be better if we had gotten more wins.”

Howard’s next step is regaining his health. He’s made steady progress since undergoing surgery. Although he offered no time table, Howard is expected to participate in the offseason training program and organized team activities.

He’s also getting married in February.

“Looking forward to getting healthy this offseason and getting ready for next season,” Howard said. “It’s going pretty good rehabbing. I’m getting ready for next year. My main goal is to get back on the field. I can’t take too much time off.”

Howard injected toughness and power into the offensive line. When the 6-5, 322-pounder hurt his knee against Kansas City in October, he only missed two games and returned for a win over Jacksonville in London.

“The best moment was just dealing with the injury and coming back and getting a hard-fought win in Jacksonville,” Howard said. “That was very emotional to me. At one point in time, I thought I wouldn’t play the rest of the season. The coaches supported me and I’m just glad to have a part in the success.”

The Texans initially tried Howard at left guard and left tackle. He didn’t look comfortable, though, and became the starting right tackle against the Los Angeles Chargers.

THE REST OF THE STORY

Doc you confirmed that it shouldn't have needed surgery but then it did. I realized that those things do happen but is it possible that he somehow re-injured the meniscus? Perhaps trying to come back too early?

He came back too soon for a grade II MCL and a meniscus tear to rehab (<3 weeks). A grade II MCL should never require surgery. A meniscus tear requires 6-8 weeks of conservative rehab if it is even ever to be able to circumvent the need for surgical intervention.

Natural right tackle, not a left tackle.
That would tend to validate the claims that the Texans screwed up the pick.
The Texans desperately needed an OT to protect DW4s blind side and they failed to reach that goal with their top pick but instead used two
additional future first round picks to trade for a LT.
Could Dillard have been that blind side protection for DW4 ? Maybe, but we'll never know.

If anything it reinforces the fact that there were no legit LTs at 1.23 in that draft. Of all the tackles left, Howard was the only one with the upside to possibly play LT.

& just because we didn't believe the guy from Alabama State was ready to play LT as a rookie doesn't mean he won't ever be.

Yea but perhaps there was potentially a ligit LT in the 2019 Draft @ 1.22 ?
I dunno how you could reach that conclusion now given that Andre Dillard was playing behind the Eagles long-time multi-year all-pro LT and future HOFer Jason Peters so he had no real opportunity to be a starter his rookie year. The 2020 season will be Dillards opportunity and till then IMO its pemature to reach conclusions about his abilities and potential as a ligit NFL LT.

The key part in that is that he has got to play behind a HoF LT so he learned from the best. Here he would have been thrown out there if not game one than soon after. Not to mention Devlin would have been his coach so......yeah. Even if Dillard is an all pro for the Eagles next year that doesn't mean he would have been here. Don't get me wrong I think we could have gotten Howard in the 2nd and I wanted Brown myself but if Howard is the answer to RT for 10 years then 1:23 is actually great value for him.
