Cal McNair...

Has the sound of a genius, running a company that operates on the cutting edge of a management style that is so intricate and advanced, that mere mortals could not possibly comprehend. Then, you sneak around back, and discover it .... it's Fred Sanford's place !

Wish I could like this 1,000 times

McNair: We’ve added a CRZ unit, which everyone in Houston should have actually in the backyard.

Just ordered mine off of ebay.

The flat management structure should fix the crappy offensive system, playcalling, and player evaluation

The only thing flatter is the number of playoff wins under BOB. This whole thing has the paws of Jack Esterby all over it. Doing a bunch of crap that is completely meaningless just for the sake of doing something. If they want to do something, get a better HC and a GM that knows what he is doing and let them go to work. Anyone really think any of this BS and nonsense actually makes one iota of difference on the field?

I have no idea if the present structure will help or not.

I also haven't decided it won't before giving it a chance.

Not aware of the "bunch of crap" other than the Gaine firing, which I think was a mistake.

What else has Esterby done?

:coffee:

We don't know if it will work.

Q: What can you tell us about Jack Easterby’s role with the team moving forward?
McNair: "Well, we’re really lucky to have Jack with us. He is executive vice president of team development. So his role is to do whatever it takes to make the organization grow and operate at its absolute peak performance."

So Cal thinks that firing your GM before training camp will make the organization grow and operate at its absolute peak performance! I fear that the owner is either naive or stupid and is easily influenced.

Right. Or we kinda do know.
Really? How? We can surmise, guess or whatever but we don't know. I am saying the system is now in place from today on as far as fans are concerned (we don't know of any "GM" type movement being done) so we cannot know if it will work. I would prefer a GM but most work is done so I am okay as it stands. To love this system and for me to want team to keep it, we need to make trade(s) bringing in a starting corner and/or Trent Williams. I also would be okay with OBrien being GM if he would give up some of the coaching things he does now. I laughed at the TE coach becoming the OC but if he actually is allowed to be OC that would be an example of what I am saying.

If you are saying OBrien has not given much reason for my optimism, I agree 100%.

To question the process Texans used to replace Gaine is fair. It is not fair IMO, to criticise the act of firing the former GM and replace him with Caserio.

It's not fair because Caserio hasn't been hired yet.

This gm fiasco was in no uncertain terms a flop and miscalculation. Humiliating actually.

It taints cal's credibility. How do you fire one GM for another you didn't (couldn't) get?

I don't wanna see cal learn on the job. I wanna see him pragmatic, cold, and calculating.

Not a good start.

Yeah, the TE coach being " OC " thing (sure he is), a franchise who not only has no GM, but the way they botched things up to get there (being told no on Caserio, signing Gaine to FIVE years, firing Gaine after 18 months, THEN trying to talk to their man Caserio, being threatened with tampering, backing away like a dog with it's tail between it's legs), and of course, Bill O'Brien running this circus for a 6th year.

Not a lot there to give one much hope.

Agree but I guess I am "well it is what it is so make best of it until it can be changed".

Oh, no doubt. You hope the talent they have is able to overcome some, or a lot of those things holding them back, and maybe they will find a way to have a winning record, maybe make they playoffs, but I have little faith they'll go much farther than that. Wash, rinse, repeat.

I don't have a good feeling about Cal. I realize I'm a bit jaded entering my 18th season as a Texan fan. But, I don't have a good feeling about Cal.

Who wouldn't be jaded after this much time? No harm no foul cause I'm right there with you.

Cal seemingly made an impulsive decision. I think that might lead to more exciting free agency signings? I guess we'll see.

Hard to believe Gaine was on the way of our growth.

Gaine has done nothing but try to address the TE and O-line situation. 2 Positions BOB has failed to develop talent at.

I've been wondering if BOB will make a splash in FA to demonstrate he's got it under control and doesn't need a GM. It wouldn't surprise me.

This is my hope and thought..splash part anyway!
Agreed. A splash would be nice. I don't even mind BOB retaining GM control if he's got the right guys under him doing the legwork. I don't see it being any worse than having another GM that he can't stay on the same page with.

You guys have heard from training camp BOB is very different right? He has completely delegated to his OC and DC and others to run things visibly. He does not carry a play sheet or such and is not yelling but every now and then coaching and showing things. He may be so busy he had to delegate, or maybe this is some of the feedback Cal gave him, to lead and trust. They are his people now anyway, let them do their job, coach them, fire them if needed but dont do their jobs too. I find this a good start. It was what a lot of the ex players noticed right away

So now OB's job is 'watch the game?'

That's the oddest defense ever mounted.

But hey, at least the former DLman will be in control of the offense rather than OB.

Great post! Really wouldn't mind OB taking a page from Lombardi......I'm only as good as the men I surround myself with. Micromanagement is for knuckleheads since his staff was hand selected.

I was a senior executive at a top 5 company when I retired, and in my view it is similiar and I think a head coach has to get the right people in place, hold people accountable, set the culture and vision, coach his leaders etc. The last thing he should do is micromanage, sack the person he has to micromanage, don't do their job. You also have to deal with conflict in an org, and make decisions, and I would think on game day. Anyway, I am happy to see him at the higher level, everything runs better when the right people are in place, know their role, and do it

Kinda remember hearing similar rhetoric when OB named Godsey OC. I got excited then, until the regular season & I saw his suck was as bad as BO'bs. Actually, he made BO'b look good.

Alls I'm saying is I hope the reports you heard are true & I hope the people BO'b picked are good. But chances are...
