Made no senseJust backs up my point that its coaching. You had the man playing LT all preseason. And you moved him to right when Henderson went down.
O'Brien mentioned Rankins appears more comfortable on the left side. Also, I vaguely recall some posts mentioning that based on Rankins' injury, he might be more effective playing on the left side.
It's only one game, but Davenport didn't show me anything at LT that would make me think he should stay at LT. In fact, I felt the OL played better with Rankins at LT and Davenport at RT.
So did they move Davenport because he sucked or because Rankin is more comfortable at LT?
I wasn't clear on that.
Even in limited preseason action, Rankins played LG and LT. So, take it for what it's worth, but it appears Rankin playing LT was their backup plan.
A. Rodgers oline is getting him killed.

O-line looked ok actually..I thought the biggest issue today for us was we were out of sync from having not played together too much in the preseason.
They gave up so many sacks b/c Watson held the ball too long at times and we didn’t commit to the run game enough...
There were some big holes and Miller/Blue did well running.
The fact that the Patriots essentially chose not to blitz in the game places even more of a blight on the OL's and Watson's performance. The online play was much better than some have reported. Most of the time Watson had 3 seconds to get rid of the ball. Not ideal, but ok. DWs indecisiveness coupled with the WRs not getting separation caused the passing game to be very ragged. The run game seemed to fair better with some actual holes for the RB to run through. Unlike last year. I watched Davenport at LT on a few passing plays, and he held his own on the ones I saw.
the 1st offensive play of the game/season was a freaking TO. What's more is it's off a play type that Watson has probably run a couple hundred times in his career. That play had nothing directly to do with BoB...or the o-line. The whole team from the jump was just out of sync and not ready for "live bullets" &That play illustrates it.
I guess I'm confused when you say the offense's "rusty" play had nothing "directly" to do with O'Brien. Isn't he the guy responsible for getting the offense ready to play?the 1st offensive play of the game/season was a freaking TO. Got outcoached and turned the ball over. Receipe for a L, you have to play a perfect game to beat the Pats in Foxboro.
I predict that Bill Belichick out coaches Bill O'Brien ….
Exactly why they needed extended playing time in the preseason. Even in the third game against the Rams, where they should have played into the third quarter if not a full half. They came out after a couple series.the 1st offensive play of the game/season was a freaking TO. What's more is it's off a play type that Watson has probably run a couple hundred times in his career. I think the OL performed ok in Game 1. The injury to Henderson could've been worse but the guys were opening holes and Miller / Blue were taking advantage of their chances.
Like I stated before, I'd give the OL a few games before I start with any real praises or criticisms.
While *I* agree with you, Watson says the poor O-line play is on him.I didn't think they were very good …. the Pats didn't blitz much yet Watson always had people around his feet and was constantly contained when he tried to scramble - We didn't see him get outside at all , big reason for that was the Pats defensive scheme and execution of that scheme. They didn't run themselves out of the play and collapsed the pocket and the Texans OL put up little resistance.
Sure they opened a few holes on the ground but it seemed to me that the Pats were giving them that after getting a lead …. Rankin can run block but cant pass protect to save his ass. Davenport was decent again.
Q: Where'd you sense most of the pressure from the Patriots pass rush?
DW: Really nowhere, I was just holding the ball too long. So that was on me, not the offensive line. You can't block forever so I have to get the ball out quick and continue to try to get the ball into the skill players' hands and let them make plays.

But this bothered me more than anything else that was said.
Q: How did you feel with your first full game and what are some things that went well and some things that didn't go well?
DW: For me, personally, I think it was terrible on my part. So you can just - I just feel like you can put the ‘L' on me because I'll be way better than what I showed today. Just my energy was low and just overthinking the little things.
Dammit, they're supposed to wring out these hiccups in preseason!!

He's right , he did hold the ball too long on several occasions …. but that ability to generate positive yards when the play breaks down is what makes him special and the Pats completely negated that by their gameplan , they didn't let him do anything outside the pocket and kept him bottled up between the tackles almost the entire game. That limits the amount of time he has to make something happen because he cant get outside and do what he does.
The Texans OT's didn't force those outside rushers beyond and out of the play (and Watson didn't get rid of it quickly). It was those outside rushers who kept him in the pocket. They were really disciplined with their rush and never took themselves out of the play.
Basically the Pats used Watson's greatest strength against him …. and the Texans didn't adjust. Just like I said in the lets predict thread , OB was out coached , out schemed and out game planned.
Watson was not rusty. He wasn't mentally prepared. Thus the reason why he held onto the ball too long, not trusting his eyes and push poor accuracy.
The lack of reps with this new line attributed to all of that. That's solely on Bill Obrien who is notorious for not having his team ready to play.
Move the pocket with bootlegs, use bubble screens, slants and other short passes to slow the pass rush down. Use 2 TE sets more often. Get your QB into a good rhythm before trying the RPO stuff, throw the challenge flag on a very questionable "catch". I can mention more, but you get the idea.Turning the ball over was the main reason they lost the game. Watson has to clean that up or it will be a long season. What adjustments would you have suggested BOB make?

Well, that's not what Watson himself said, but you know best.
Didn't see your post until I responded to SB …. but you nailed it.
OB let the Pats dictate everything rather than forcing them to defend Watson's strengths. Lets stand in the pocket and chuck and duck.
Never had a doubt...........high ankle sprain/fractures do that...........ask Martin x 2.Henderson out for year per OB’s press conference right now.

I don't think his career will end there. And I believe the Texans will try to bring him back next year to see if he was able to overcome the injury.unfortunately for him, with his history in the league and him only having a 1 year deal here I think it probably will lead to the end of his career
Can we somehow get another tackle in here? Trade? Did anyone worth mentioning get cut at the final cuts? I felt pretty bad about our O-line before the injury, now I am horrified...

Bwhahaha I'm the one that quoted Watson. You're the one that thinks you know everything . And Watson did not sat last years injury was the reason for his bad performance, you did.

Bottom line is he nuts up against the Patriots or any other elite coach.
Rankin is the LT folks. He's the best lineman we have. Davenport was getting beat like a drum. The inside guys were battling. I'll give that alignment a game or two before I start tinkering.
