NFL Random Thought of the Day

Ruh Roh..

The Patriots first round tackle Isaiah Wynn was carted off the field with a ankle injury.. Now both of their 1st rounders are down. RB Sony Michel is already out with a knee injury.

Nick Foles was reported to have sustained a noncharacterized shoulder injury last night. It is most likely to me a labrum and/or rotator cuff tear.

Does that mean Carson Wentz will start Week 1?
Not bad news for me. I have Wentz on my fantasy team.
I offered Wentz for Watson and the guy told me he'd think about it.

Patriots first-round OL Isaiah Wynn (torn Achilles) was ruled out for the 2018 season.

Per Rotoworld

Damn. Potential career altering injury before it even began.. That's horrible. Torn Achilles' injuries are my least favorite. I was so so excited when we drafted D'Onta Foreman and was ecstatic about his potential and now I've pretty much had to write him off.

Big blow to the Pats. Eventually stuff like this will catch up with them and their window will slam shut.

Wynn was to be the guy to protect Brady's "blind side" from what I've read. And the guy presently playin LT for them is Trent Brown, former RT with the 49ers.
Anyway with the departure of former LT Nate Soldier, the Pats are gonna have to scramble to shore up their OLine and see that its fully capable of protecting Brady.

After MRI, the "official" word from the team is that it is a minor shoulder strain. Again, looking at the film, it looks like more than that. I still believe we will later find out that there is either labrum or rotator damage from at least a shoulder subluxation.

Watching the Lions game, LB Steve Longa grabbed his right knee when he tried to sharply cut to make a tackle. His right foot seemed to stick in the turf while the rest of his body kept going. I would be surprised if this was not a noncontact ACL and possibly even more. I hope that this is not the case.

Foles said yesterday, that everything was "alright".
But I trust your :spy: network more than what the player says. You got any inside info on this.
(My FF draft is approaching :D)

A subluxation, which is what I believe he sustained, means it would have probably popped partially out and then back.....and everything is "alright"..........for now. When adislocation or subluxation occurs, the labrum is torn from the bone and the capsule is stretched. These injuries, depending on the extent of damage, commonly cause recurrent instability of the shoulder.

Therefore, the main significance of subluxation and dislocation is after the first time, recurrence is very likely, especially in younger patients. The recurrence rate in patients under 20 years old is close to 95%. The recurrence rate goes down as age advances. In patients over age 40, there is only a 40 to 50% recurrence. Backward or posterior dislocation of the shoulder is rare and usually associated with a seizure disorder or high velocity trauma. Backward or posterior subluxation is also relatively rare, and is most often seen in football players, specifically offensive lineman.

Due to the high recurrence rates, the goal of any treatment is to reduce the possibility of recurrence. The minimal treatment for the first time dislocation should be immobilization in a sling and physical therapy for 3-6 weeks. In spite of this treatment, the recurrence rate of dislocation and subluxation is still fairly high. If the shoulder is not immobilized after a dislocation, the chances of redislocation are extremely high with unrestricted activity in the first 1-2 weeks.

Once a shoulder dislocates a second time, it will almost always continue to redislocate with the arm in certain positions and often with less and less trauma.

It is my opinion that once a shoulder subluxes, it will probably continue to do so, even if it is immobilized. If, however, treatment is sought for the first time subluxation, immobilization should be done for 3-6 weeks to take advantage of the off-chance that it will reduce the recurrence rate.

Looks like Kyle Williams had an MRI reported as a Grade III MCL.........he was fortunate to avoid an ACL. Still, he is unlikely to return short of 6 weeks.

Today's MRI confirmed an ACL...............ACL #19.

Vikings’ DE Ade Aruna was carted off the field with a knee injury. It sure looked suspicious for an ACL. Like always, will have to wait for MRI.

Bills P Cory Carter suffered a torn ACL (not yet officially reported, but I'm sure it will be) when his plant leg was hit after getting a punt off..............ACL #20.

Doc you need to come up with some ACL vitamins/herbs that strengthens parts like that. Something to use as an preventative, you might get rich

I'm thinking of keeping the overhead down and profits up by selling dirt in a brown small brown paper bag with printed instructions on it to "Rub some dirt on it.".................just a effective as any other ACL preventative............and doesn't have to be FDA approved.

What about designing a brace that minimally affects normal movement but keeps the knee more stable?

What about designing a brace that minimally affects normal movement but keeps the knee more stable?
It can't be effectively designed. MCLs (and only theoretically LCLs) can be somewhat stabilized because side motion is not a normal knee function, and therefore braces designed to prevent abnormal directional movement is right in line with normal knee function. With an ACL, although twisting of the knee is not a normal knee movement, flexing and extending is. Attempts to design an ACL rupture prevention cannot control the source of the twist.............i.e., the foot that transmits the force to twist to the knee. Furthermore, a necessary brace design that can allow free flexion and extension of the knee cannot limit the extension or forward tibial movement without debilitating result, except maybe when standing or leisurely walking. All of this before we even get to the comfort factor of this monstrous contraptions. Many such attempts at designing such braces have ultimately failed miserably in sports, especially football.

Thanks for the reply Doc!

I’ve seen the contraptions the college lineman wear and I know that’s not practical.

Watching the game, it looked like Jameill Showers Cowboys S suffered an ACL, but has not been officially called. They are awaiting MRI...........it's always been curious to me why teams seem to usually have to wait for an MRI to call ACLs. Most all ACLs can be diagnosed by on the spot physical exam of the knee.

Derek Wolfe puts NFL on blast over 'ridiculous' penalties
ByZack Kelberman 9 hours ago

If it felt like Broncos orange and Bears white was drowned out by yellow ... well, that's because it was.

A mind-numbing total of 28 penalties for 293 yards were called in Saturday's preseason game, with Denver and Chicago racking up 14 apiece. The contest, which took nearly three-and-a-half hours to complete, was slowed to a crawl by trigger-happy referee John Parry and his crew.

“I’m hopeful it won’t look like that [in the regular season]," Broncos coach Vance Joseph said after the team's 24-23 loss. "Obviously right now, they’re throwing penalties that. If it’s close, they’re throwing it. I get it. It’s preseason. They want to change the behavior. That happens every preseason, but it seems like it’s more this preseason. So hopefully, Week 1 starts, it kind of calms down a little bit. Both teams had [14] penalties for 144 [plus] yards. These games are going to be all night. Hopefully it calms down some. It usually does Week 1."

THE REST OF THE STORY

**********************************************************

If things continue like this into the regular season, it will not only be a long game that we'll be watching, but a long season. If you take the time to look at most of the week 2 preseason game penalty numbers and penalty yards, many very similar to the Broncos/Bears, it's unbelievable.

It has now been confirmed by MRI that Cowboys’ S Jameill Showers did in fact sustain a torn 2ACL.............ACL#24.

Another OT having problems. Vikings' Matt Kalil underwent bilateral knee scopes in 2015 and the hip labrum surgery in 2016. His 2017 season was riddled with nagging injuries including groin tear. This year he was hoping to go into the season without surgery or injury. However, it now appears that he is dealing with a knee issue that has not allowed him to practice.

This made me LOL

As for Houston itself, that whole joint smells like burnt diesel fuel mixed with BO. Even Jacksonville, which smells like a mix of half-processed wood pulp and Maxwell House, offers a better olfactory experience. For every reasonable Houston resident, there is a dude in a 10-gallon hat firing off six-shooters every time the EPA declines to investigate a hurricane-related chemical spill.

Last night, in basically a half of play, Andrew Luck went 6 of 13 for 50 yards (3.8 YPA), 0 touchdowns, 1 pick, and a 24.5 passer rating. He was sacked twice.

What I always expected was that as Luck used that shoulder more and more, he would not perform better.........the progressive wear on his shoulder would become evident and respond just the opposite. Yes, "It's only preseason".......so time will have to tell the whole story.

VIDEO of Luck's every throw

Damn..he has zero velocity on those throws..

After watching that, I have little concern that he'll be the QB he use to be. All his passes looked slow and/or off target. There were at least 2 drops and 2 he put into the WR/TE's belly. Otherwise it felt like passes just hung in air after he threw them.

This dude has serious problems. I get it, it hurts losing your parent. Threatening to shoot up a funeral home is not acceptable. I'm glad he was never a Texan.

Richie Incognito in custody for disorderly conduct, making threats
http://www.espn.com/nfl/story/_/id/24436462/richie-incognito-police-custody-making-threats

"Incognito reportedly was upset with staff and began to damage property inside the business and shout at employees. At several points during his contact with staff, Incognito threatened to retrieve guns from his vehicle and return to shoot the employees," according to the police.

Can't say I wouldn't have gotten upset at the staff myself. All he's trying to do is bury his father. We don't know how the funeral staff treated him. A guy like Richie Incognito is a ticking time bomb. Not too surprised with that story. I kind of want to side with Incognito on this one, if only he didn't threaten to kill anybody. He went too far... Damaging property is my cut off point. I would have maybe kicked a chair or smashed a flower vase at best. I'd have stopped there.
