Texans random thought of the day

I've often wondered why a team doesn't draft 3 Zone Read QB's and when one goes down you keep the same offense, that way you can make it thru the season.

Well Shanahan did say..
Kyle Shanahan-
"the issue is it’s hard to find a quarterback who can run that offense"
So it's hard enough finding one..let alone 3 QBs who successfully can.

Holy crap....Houston Texans cheerleaders are now on night line. :smiliepalm:

I think it's past time to just do away with the program. Were the women mistreated? I'm sure there has been mistreatment, but for Christ's sake..all I want to do is what a damn football game without all of this other crap we now have to deal with constantly.

We? Honestly I always thought the whoohoo we honor the vets was self-serving BS to begin with.

You were on the cheerleading squad?

So you object/objected to all the patriotic stuff before and during games?

Just there for the game right?

At this point yes, get rid of it all. It's no longer worth the bullshit.

I just want to watch a damn game where for 1 day I can unplug from all the crap for 3 hours

There's only one problem with this though.. They can disband all the Cheerleader squads and people will just pickup and move on without much of a fuss.

They can the National anthem and the **** storm that would come with that will be exponentially worse than the crap the league is already dealing with now which is why that isn't a realistic option, so my peace and serenity is still screwed with either way.

All I can hope for is people stop caring about who kneels or stands and the damn media stops reporting/politicizing it all season on sports channels.

Forced honor is no honor at all.

Push comes to shove I'd rather honor people speaking up even if I disagree with what they say.

Hey, how about being raised to honor. No one in this country should feel "forced" to honor. It's a privilege to enjoy this honor. It's not like the quandary of, which came first, the chicken or the egg. Folks on this land have been giving their lives from day one so the rest can enjoy their freedom. I've been standing for the anthem since I could to include when we played our first Pee-Wee Football and Baseball Leagues games....b/c being raised in a military family, you understand from a very early age the sacrifice involved.

Nothing cooler than going to a movie on a military base and before the movie starts, the Anthem is played along with a video. Everybody...and I mean everybody gets out of their chairs and stands....even the kids and teenagers who are there by themselves. Talking about something that will give you a sense of pride about the country in which you live.

The decision to extend McKinney under reasonable terms as this would appear to be is a nobrainer for GM Gaine while resigning McKinneys more high-profile defensive
teammate JD Clowney is problematic.

Good player and not a crazy amount of guaranteed money. Personally, I feel LBs are replaceable though so i’d rather the team spend at other positions but you can do worse than a consistent dependable rock in the middle like Mckinney. Especially with the run oriented offenses in the division. Makes sense for this team that has to play the Jags/Titans and presumably the Colts now that they have committed significant resources to fixing their OL.

While I can respect the right they have to voice their opinion, I certainly won't "honor" the way they chose to go about it. This whole situation could've been handled a lot better on BOTH sides...but this discussion is veering into NSZ territory, so I'll leave it at that.

Anyone else find it interesting that BMack got his contract before Clowney? Throw in this latest surgery and we'd be fools not protecting our future. I still think Clowney has DMVP potential but those knees will always be a concern.

Kendricks is a similar level of player who signed a similar level contract with Minnesota earlier this offseason. There was a comparable contract already in place for negotiations and it is a much smaller number than Clowney will command (with no baseline set by players like Khalil Mack/Aaron Donald).

To me it's more so that our GM was openly stating that we were close and then radio silence. Just odd to me is all.

Texans coach Bill O’Brien angrily brushed aside any allegation that star wide receiver DeAndre Hopkins was carted off during Wednesday’s practice session.

“Nobody got carted off,” O’Brien declared dismissively in his post-practice presser. “Maybe he got a ride. I don’t know. I didn’t see anybody get carted off. I don’t think he got carted off. He got a ride. However you want to phrase it, I think he’s fine.”

The incident in question was not captured on any film and was not reported on social media by any media members in attendance.

The Texans are now done with all on-field work until training camp in West Virginia next month.

Texans rookie Trevor Daniel not fazed by long odds for roster spot
By John McClain, Houston Chronicle

June 14, 2018

Photo: Michael Reaves/Getty Images

Despite having Shane Lechhler entrenched as the Texans' punter, rookie Trevor Daniel from Tennessee chose Houston among his free-agent options.

As a senior at the University of Tennessee last season, punter Trevor Daniel had a gross average of 47.5 yards and a net of 41.8. He compiled a school-record average of 45.9 yards, making him one of the best in the nation at his position.
At the NFL combine, Daniel put on quite a show, running the 40-yard dash in 4.98 and bench pressing 225 pounds 23 times, more than a lot of offensive linemen.

When Daniel wasn't drafted, he considered multiple free-agent offers before signing with the Texans to compete with Shane Lechler.

Daniel, a native of Dickson, Tenn., made a lot of fans in his home state wonder why he would choose to try to beat out Lechler, one of the greatest punters in NFL history who could be destined for the Pro Football Hall of Fame.
"I saw it as a good opportunity," Daniel said Wednesday. "Shane's been in the league going on 19 years, and I knew he's somebody I could learn from and get some tips from (and) maybe I could possibly be in the NFL for that long.

"I feel like it's a (good) opportunity for me to compete, and, hopefully, win a job."

Beating out Lechler might take something close to a miracle, but Daniel knew the enormity of the competition when he signed with the Texans.

Lechler, who's entering his 19th season and his sixth with the Texans, turns 42 the second week of training camp.

Last season, Lechler's 49.0-yard gross average was his best since 2011 when he still punted for Oakland. His 41.3-yard net was his best since 2009. His five touchbacks were the third-fewest of his career. He also put 32 inside the 20-yard line, third-most of his career.

"Of course, I've known who Shane was," Daniel said. "I really started watching NFL punters in college. He's welcomed me, and he's really helped me.

"I think I've done okay. I think I've shown them my capabilities. I don't think I've been as consistent as a professional punter should be right now. I still have a lot to work on. I'll keep my head down and keep working."

Even though Lechler knows Daniel impressed the coaches during the offseason program and is trying to win his job, he hasn't shied away from helping the rookie adjust to the NFL.

"Absolutely," Daniel said. "Every day, we'll be punting, and he'll critique me. We'll be watching film, and he'll let me know if I'm doing something I shouldn't be doing. He gives me tips on how to fix things. All the specialists are really cool. They're all trying to help me."

Benardrick McKinney .@bm1157 on Texans strength coach Luke Richesson: 'He's awesome. It's really unbelievable how he's transformed my body. I feel like I did back in high school and college. I feel like I can run all day. I feel a lot more explosive. I'm ready for the season.'

Richesson might be the most important addition this offseason. Denver seemed to consistently have the edge over their opponents in physicality. If he can get the team in better shape to reduce all the soft tissue injuries the team is snake bit with year after year even better!

I've only met a couple of military vets that are upset about the whole anthem thing. I disagree with them using only the anthem to voice this protest. If it's really that important, be more proactive and do some real community outreach things.

We were in talks with NE for Gronk according to Breer

The Rob Gronkowski trade talks were real, according to multiple reports, but cooler heads eventually prevailed. We don’t know how close the New England Patriots came to trading their all-everything tight end, but there certainly were conversations, according to reports. First, there was a report the Patriots had talks with the Tennesee Titans and San Francisco 49ers about Gronkowski. Now, on Monday, The MMQB’s Albert Breer reported on “The Herd With Colin Cowherd” that the Patriots also talked to the Detroit Lions and Houston Texans about a trade for the seemingly disgruntled tight end. “I don’t think they were shopping Gronk to the entire league, but there were some teams they trust that I know they talked to. Detroit, Tennessee, Houston, San Francisco — you guys can make the connections there,” Breer said. The “connections,” of course, are obvious. Lions general manager Bob Quinn used to work for the Patriots, as did new Lions head coach Matt Patricia. Former Patriots offensive coordinator Bill O’Brien is the head coach in Houston. The Titans are in their first year under new head coach — and former Patriots linebacker — Mike Vrabel, while GM Jon Robinson spent more than a decade in Foxboro. There’s familiarity with the 49ers, too, as the two teams made the blockbuster trade for quarterback Jimmy Garoppolo last season. Patriots coach Bill Belichick is friendly with Kyle Shanahan (dating back to Belichick’s admiration for Shanahan’s father, Mike), and general manager John Lynch even had a cup of coffee with the Patriots toward the end of his career.

Wow! Even if Gronk could produce gold turds would I want to see the Texans make a trade with Beli......unless he's asking a conditional RD6 pick. Now, I doubt that very seriously but if there's any truth to this rumor, you can bet Beli is hunting for a RD2 in return. Thanks but no thanks based on his recent injury history. Beli, keep your damaged goods and find a way to make him happy.

TheCleveland Brownssigned former No. 2 overall pickGreg Robinsonon Tuesday, the team announced.

The signing comes days after the NFL announced that offensive tackleDonald Stephensonhas beensuspended for the first two games of the 2018 seasonfor violating the league's substance-abuse policy.

Last season with theDetroit Lions, Robinson struggled along with the rest of the offensive line as the team allowed 23 sacks.

Robinson, 25, was traded from theLos Angeles Ramsto Detroit last June as the Lions searched for a replacement for then-injured left tackleTaylor Decker.

Texans' Whitney Mercilus on early football days: 'I was a toothpick'
June 21, 2018

As a budding football player, Texans outside linebacker Whitney Mercilus was still maturing physically and had no background in the sport.

Growing up in Akron, Ohio, Mercilus was a soccer player first.

He didn't start playing football until he was a high school freshman.Unlike nowadays when Mercilus has become a chiseled 6-4, 265-pound pass rusher, he still had a lot of bulking up to do.

"I was skinny as a toothpick," Mercilus told a group of youth football players Thursday during the Texans' annual football camp at the Methodist Training Center. "I started playing football when I was a freshman. Before football, I played soccer.

"Therefore, I had the athletic gene. I already had quick feet. I was just a raw talent. I worked very hard at my craft at pass rushing and playing the run and my dedication in the weight room as well."

Get insights, lively discussion and, of course, debate from Houston Chronicle columnists and guests every Thursday as they take on the most current hot-button topics in sports. Please subscribe on your favorite podcast app, and give us a five-star rating on Apple Podcasts. It helps! Thanks!

Mercilus eventually earned a scholarship to Illinois. He told the youngsters about attending football camps at Ohio State and Toledo.

"Playing against good competition, it allowed me to develop," Mercilus said. "I wanted to give them an idea to reflect my story. I'm giving them information to actually progress and get better whether it's as a football player or a student-athlete and scholar."

Mercilus also related how his parents pulled him out of football briefly when his grades dropped to a 2.8 grade point average.

"My parents were my role models," Mercilus said. "I saw how hard they worked. I didn't want to fail them. They pulled me out of football. That was a trigger in my mind to be better all-around and not think football is the end-all and be-all. My mind will always outlast my body."

This guy makes a lot of sense:-

@movethejoystick @McClain_on_NFL @SportsRadio610 Doubt it, Colvin played almost exclusively at nickel in Jax and had so much success there it would be unwise to move him away from success. He’s very good in traffic coverage but would be at a big disadvantage if put on outside due to his physical size compared to opponents. https://twitter.com/CoachMaverickk/status/1010292168903323660?s=17

I and others was interested in Tre Boston coming to Houston & while I'm ok with what we seem to have at safety I still would like to see him here.

"It's kinda' rough man, they got us where they think they want us," Boston told SiriusXM NFL Radio on Friday. "For us, we have to communicate with each other so we don't take this minimum wage."

Boston, 25, spent last year with the Chargers after toiling for the Panthers from 2014 to 2016. The former Panthers defender is mired in a dead safety market along with Eric Reid, Kenny Vaccaro and Mike Mitchell.

Boston has met with the Colts and Cardinals, saying of his Indianapolis visit: "I didn't meet with the [general manager], [head coach] or [defensive coordinator]. I was in the lunch room for [two] hours. I even got to play basketball."

As for his Cardinals meet-and-greet, Boston told Sirius: "They rolled out the red carpet for me, but the offer was very, very disrespectful."

"People think that you can find safeties anywhere,"one former defensive coordinator told NFL Network's Bucky Brooks. "Listen to how people always talk about aging cornerbacks moving inside to safety when they lose their athleticism. Sure, some guys can do it, but there's a lot more that goes into the position than some realize. You have to be smart and a communicator to play in the back end. You also need to be a solid tackler in the open field.

"You can't just throw anybody in there and expect them to have success."

Boston has one thing going for him. Camp is around the corner, which means a sea of injuries will unfold. That alone will force coaches league-wide to acknowledge available safeties after an offseason full of disrespect.

I've waited a long time to see this move finally happen. Funny thing, if he shines as a Safety a lot of us will be able to toot our horn b/c we knew the Texans should've made this move years ago.

Even if it works out now it doesn't mean it would have been the right move years ago.

KJax was not a top CB when the Texans were missing the rush. Go ahead and pull the stats....but IMO, he didn't pass the eye test. I'm not certain if the Texans plan on him playing SS but I always thought he'd be best suited as a FS.

Joseph has not shown me much to say he cannot continue to play at starter NFl level for this team. In addition, I think Crennel with more hands on the defense this season will benefit Joseph and others. If Jackson plays safety It would not make much sense to me to play Colvin anywhere (full time) other than nickel; the dude is just good there & will help to clog the middle. The corners effectiveness IMO depends a lot on Kevin Johnson and his ability to remain on field; should he return to his rookie play he can play opposite Joseph.

I want to call attention to another guy that was overlooked in draft and perhaps by Texans fans. 7th round pick #222 Jermaine Kelly 6' about 195 ran 4.52 his pro day and reportedly has run as low as 4.47. While he was on roster University of Washington in 2014, he played little then transferred to San Jose State and redshirted 2015. So damage to body was reduced. His 2016 was average but solid and his 2017 season was very good with 53 tackles 46 total solo, one INT for a 68 yard touchdown and 12 PBUs. PFF for last year 93.8 in coverage. He reads QB eyes and track ball well. He will need adjustment time as do most DBs but I will not be shocked if he starts 2019. I see little reason to bring back KJ for extension unless he has a pro bowl season and accepts a Joseph type deal.

Couple of nuggets from the BOB interview on 610:

  • Watson and receivers will be getting together during the break
  • Tyrann Mathieu is "a really good player"
  • Kareem will rotate positions in different packages
  • Aaron Colvin got a mention, shown good coverage skills inside
  • Zach Fulton can even be put out at OT in a pinch
  • Kelemete mentioned at 3 interior spots, Seantrel "good feet"
  • Rankin missed field time, but he’s "been very, very good in the classroom"
  • Roderick Johnson, just another addition trying to upgrade the bottom 10 spots on the 90
  • Watson/O’Brien relationship, He knows what I’m likely to call and I know what plays he likes to run… "these young guys want the play in quickly and they like to play fast." Mentioned Kyle Shanihan, Sean McVey offenses.
